I’m guilty of spending more time on the products & color theory than the actual painting. It’s one of those things you don’t realize you’re doing until someone tells you, so thank you for that and for another informative video.

I agree with you. I’ve studied in a top art school, but I’ve never heard of ‘swatching’. You learn as you paint and as you make mistakes. Period! TH-cam university has shown me a lot of things I wasn’t even aware of like the use of masking gum. These are good resources, but you as an artist you need to understand when and how to use tricks and tips.

Oh yes absolutely, creativity is broader world and one should explore every possible way to express his/her art expression. 👍

So many people seem to get caught up in every hurtle possible, when they just need to keep moving. I find myself improving quickly as I try to move faster. I can get more volume of pieces painted if I move faster, making me get more practice in the limited time I have for art. Which paper? Is my brush good? Do I have the right paint? Are my skills enough? None of these things really matter untill you've gotten in the practice. Paint a thousand pieces of trash and then worry about what brand of paper you should use for a final project.

Very good advice. There is nothing like just doing it. I think the practice sessions are important. As a beginner, I went straight into painting pictures and when something went wrong, I had invested a lot of time in something that was then thrown away. It felt like a waste of time. If you get into the mindset that you are just doing practice pieces that will be thrown away anyway, it loosens you up and you become more inventive. Sometimes something appears that is worth keeping. The one thing I found useful studying theory was the "colour wheel" which shows opposite colours that are complimentary and zing together, such as red and green, yellow and purple. I still find when doing a painting that I have some scrap paper I try the colours on first. I guess as I get more experienced I won't need to do that.

Great advice, this is absolutely true. I've been discovering this in my own painting, so I try to learn by experience. I get ideas and tips from the theory, which are helpful, but it only starts to make sense after doing many paintings and making many mistakes too.

Thank you for this video. I know I could do all these things you say. The roadblock that I've come to realize that's holding me back is drawing. I have tried (maybe not as hard as I should have) to learn it. I've even tried to do it loosely like a loose sketch. My problems are with depth of field and cemetery. Honestly, just about anything I try to draw looks like a 2-year-old did it. If I could just draw, I could sing.

Your video title claims you have a 'formula' for colour mixing. Did you mean you have advice for learners? I agree that trying different combinations of colours and different water levels all change the colour and the effect, and that trial and error help us learn. There is no substitute for experience. But advice isn’t a formula and it is not scientific, so I think your title is misleading. I am disappointed because I didn’t learn anything from your video that with my limited experience I didn’t already know.
