Oh wow the sketching tip really is amazing. I do it in pencil all the time but havent really put it to use in watercolor. This'll be a game changer.

This is such a good advice :) Ever since I learnt about your 3 layer approach, my paintings have definitely improved by a mile. I'm in a bit of an artist slump right now, so I think I need to focus on this again 🙂 The colour mixing problem is also soo me. I'm currently trying to paint on a pricier cotton paper after mostly using cellulose paper (which I love!), so it's a bit of a challenge!

Thank you for the insights and encouragement. Sketching is key. I try not always successfully to do so every day. I just splash paint on cheap paper making it up as I go. A fish a building a car. It’s all fun and no pressure

i find your explanations so helpful! been a new subscriber but watching a bunch of your vids. i have a big issue w pigment control.. it looks on the page as i'm using too much paint but ive recently experimented with using less and it looks very washed out as well... i'm not sure how to work on this and think its a big reason why my paintings look muddy and heavy. what tips do you have regarding pigment control and transparency? you mention its important to keep in mind in this vid but wondering if you may have specific tips on how to control it? thank you so much

I had this problem and because of that I didn't like watercolor at all and only did oil.
Now I am doing watercolor and this is how I fixed it.
      1. Using pro quality pigments.
      2. When I need strong color I prefer to use Lukas brand of colors as I found them to be the most impacrful. You can experiment to see which brand works for you.
Note that it's only for strong part. For lighter part I use different brand like holbein or schmicke etc.
      3. Layering as he mentioned. You need to slowly build the strong colors.
      4. Start with darkest color first and then you will know how lights the light shades shall be.
      Hope it helps.

@@parthsavyasachi9348 hey thanks so much for the reply
i also switched to oils for awhile but i'm really trying to improve on watercolours. i've been using mostly pro paints mostly Daniel Smith and Winsor and Newton but I find maybe it is too pigmented
i'm really struggling with the pigment control and putting too much on the page/too heavy/no translucency. perhaps i have to dilute them way more in the palette or what techniques do you find works best for this issue?

    • @parthsavyasachi9348

@@MelitaBintoro with watercolors what I am actually doing is that I am confining myself to limited number of colors.
My strategy so far has been to try and see what combinations work good together and look harmonic.
So that means I know how the colors would look once dried. So usually I have control over final output.
I have my mistakes too. I wish I could show you in my early paintings and the recent ones.

@@parthsavyasachi9348 thanks for the reply again, how do you deal with pigment control? i do use limited palettes but i find i may be using too much pigment. although i do exercises with water control i find in my pieces i end up using too much paint.. i really struggle with it.
i have earlier paintings where i am building layer upon layer but i'm trying to be more abstract, expressive as these earlier pieces feel too controlled. been doing a lot of plein air but the pigment control seems to be my biggest issue there. would love any tips you have

i guess you should be aware if you mix them, that the resulting color looks grey and "muddy". So use them separated but dont mix.
