When I was starting, the biggest challenge was me trying to think that I need to paint it like a photograph. Watercolor paintings are not supposed to look like photographs. They are meant to be loose and stylish with a lot of accidents. The choice of paper is also an important aspect. Make it 150 gsm and above.
When I was first starting....it was the fear of picking up the brush and the painting turning out as ugly as a dumpster fire...which is why I haven't started yet. Seriously, I'm not joking. I have bought very good paints, very good brushes, very good paper - and haven't started a single painting - and its been two years now. I'll get inspired and just when I'm ready to go...zap...paralyzed. It's like I just can't take that first step. It's like a torrent being damned up.
My favourite quote is: “Everything you've ever wanted is sitting on the other side of fear.” by George Addair ❤️ So I agree with you, fear is no good for anything, even though it's hard to avoid it.
I am beginner in watercolor too...I was soo afraid to use that expensive piece of paper, so I tried to look for alternatives and I have found out that chart paper works all right so I have been trying all kinds of practices on the chart paper
Since last 2 months I was stuck because I stopped enjoying my painting process and started spending more time on checking other's work, buying more colors, expecting it to be perfect.. Smaller basic pallette of Warm and cool yellow (lemon yellow for cooler yellow, cadmium yellow for warmer), red (cooler red such as permanent alizerin crimson, warmer red such as cadmium red), blue(ultramarine blue, and a cobalt or curulean blue which tends toward warmer wide), a green of some kind, lots of folks like a sap green, and then some burnt sienna and yellow ochre, maybe burnt umber too. A warm red will mix better warm oranges quicker than a cool red, and look fresher, more pure than trying with a colder red to go warm with, cooler red will mix towards blue red faster and quicker than warm red will, will look purer,less muddy, but even muddy colors can look beautiful if surrounded by the right colors to compliment and or Contrast with particular tints created. There's a lot too it, but keeping color limited tends to help by unifying the 3 or 4 colors and tints that you use to varying degrees. Painting is about learning to paint beautiful Grayed or toned down colors ( artists wash a pure or slightly grayed orange gold color down, then a pure or slightly grayed opposite color over the top to create a visual vibration between the two colors) with splashes of purer colors here and there, and connecting values to unify and direct view, and including various contrasts in intelligent manner. It takes planning or some pretty decent skill to not, plan but do all thay on the fly. Experiment with opposite colors and washes, see which two colors look really good together, which look more muddied, which darken and to,what extent etc. A slightly grayed ultramarine blue looks good with an orange goldish color- vary the orangy color a bit with a dab of alizerin so,that it's not all one orangy color and add a little variety.
Great advice...you’re right about fear... that’s what’s keeping me from enjoying painting until I’ve realized that everyone makes mistakes and we learned from it and move on
KISS Keep It Simple Stoopid. Fantastic motivation. I loved the part about palette and keeping 5 or less colors to start. I was the 24 color guy. I have since thrown all that color away, to rid myself of the burden of "Too much mind". Red, yellow, and blue. Indigo and Peyn's grey on the side for now. Yoga, Thai Chi and Sieu Nim Tao before session and I am g2g!!!
Great insight and information. One thing that changed for me in my watercolor journey as a beginner was to step away from all the TUBES of paint and just concentrate on the primary colours and all that can be created from them. 2 Reds, 2 Blues and 2 Yellows, make a world of difference in what can be made in colours. Keeping it simple I found also creates more continuity in your painting, especially if you hold to just a few colors and then created a whole palette of options from that. Thanks for making us better artists.
I have 18 colour COLOUR PALETTE and I am not a beginner but not even a intermediate....but really I know the application of watercolour but due to less practise I m not able to apply it....but i love your videos and your channel!!! ❤️
I understand, lot many people love to explore all possible colors. Just see if you can minimise your palette and see the result 👍. Finding time to practice is key👍

Thank you, about fear: if there are negative people around, "find your happy place" to study and not show beginning learning steps, negative messages do not serve in the evolution direction, "shame inhibits creativity", negative self-image creates blocks, false expectation, FREEDOM is road to CREATIVITY, I set myself the goal to enjoy the process, and I discovered false expectations, negative messages. I was painting in the evening tired, for joy, after a year was surprised of my results. Drawing perspective helped me on subconscious level to fix symetri. Then I did not see the improvement, and life roads stopped me from painting, sad... It's a good habbit to say THANK YOU for all paintings: learning steps or masterpieces :) Great book "Psycho-Cybernetics" by Maxwell Maltz.

If you are beginning then minimum number of colors possible for the painting. Even if you are bit advance like I am for example, my strategy to still use 4 to 5 colors max but I select these 4 to 5 colors based on the thing I am painting. But in a painting I rarely exceed 5 paints.
That water with color makes so happy. Sometimes I wake up at 2:40am and cannot sleep. I go to my painting, enjoy it for 30 minutes and….. I go back to sleep…
Very valuable practical advice on what should be one's approach to watercolour painting and how this practice and attitude results in improving one's skill. Oh yes, doing monochrome is good way to learn depth & contrast, but there is a one problem in this method. Usually monochrome give you knowledge about depth, however you will not have any learning about the value of multi color behaviour. I recommend to do pencil sketch to learn depth & contrast. But again, this is all how people want to learn watercolor. My approach in this video to fast track your learning 👍 hope this is helping.

I think 300 gsm is the sweet spot. No worrying about buckling, and you can layer as much as you want (esp. with a wet on wet technique).
