Hope you are feeling better. Arms tightly around. I am 75 and have done various kinds of art in my life. When I retired from teaching Humanities, I promised myself I would learn to paint. I had been through sooooooooo many videos but none can touch the kind of advice you give. As a teacher, I had to reframe my knowledge for those who were beginners. You do that in painting and really! show us the process and the tips that would have taken years to figure out. Thank you thank you thank you for your thoughtfulness.I can't begin to express how grateful I am for your videos and your presence.
So much easier to see you mix colors while explaining the why and how. I think most artists are visual people. Thank you so much!
You are very welcome. Thank you. 💚
That’s it you are my new teacher. This is the 10th video i watch on the subject of mixing watercolors and this is the best by far. Clear thorough explanations with advice and clear definition of what is a good practice versus what is an opinion
Great lesson. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing all the tips, explaining it in simple terms and showing at the same time.
You are a great teacher with such a calming voice. Thank you!
What a fantastic video! Thank you so much!
Oh gosh I have been needing this video & this list of tips are all the things that I have got to get in the habit of doing better at. That’s a great idea about putting the color mixes into a sketchbook journal. Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us. I really appreciate it this week. 😊💕
I'm so glad! Thanks very much Colleen. 💝
I love your natural mood.At the end of the video we understand how you struggle to make a brilliant video without any mistakes. So nice of you your heart is so brilliant too Dear Louise Thank you for taking your al time and making such useful video and using a clear language.Thank you thank you.❤❤❤❤
As usual Brilliant!!😁
I love your bloopers! Don’t stop. I am a subscriber and watch and save all your videos. You are easy to understand and follow instructions. Thank you!
You are the best teacher ever! And your bloopers are the cherry on top 😁
Yes clean palette, I agree! I used to think I don’t want to waste paint so I didn’t clean my palette. However after a while of trying to find a clean space and cleaning small areas on my messy palette I just decided to clean the whole palette. Clean palette = fresh start, clear mind, and avoids muddy/contaminated pigments. Trying to find a clean space on a palette was cluttering my mind and wasting my time.
I used to think I had to clean my palette all the time and discovered I don't need to clean the blues or the greys because I always use the same mixes. (greens = PY97 + PB29; greys = burnt sienna + PB29). I do clean some areas of my palette but never the greens or greys. I use a limited palette (sometimes only 4 colors- PY97, PB29, burnt sienna, quin rose). I'm OCD, so it was a hard habit to break. 😊
Thank you for your help. The video clearly presents exactly the skills I need right now in my water colour journey. I would send a monetary thank you but I am leery of using my credit card. I am more comfortable with using PayPal. Love your work!
Keep up the endings Louise lightening my mood
I'm glad. Thank you Shirley.
A very sweet lady and a great teacher........she talks to you rather than at you.
Another clear, really helpful video thank you Louise. I particularly enjoyed the demonstration of the techniques. I even picked up that you ‘twirl” the brush in the paint to coat it fully - something that never even occurred to me. Game changer!
PS and thank you for making me chuckle yet again with your bloopers.
Great teacher and you paint beautifully. I am wowed by your artistry.
I have so many watercolor supplies, but have been struggling with what do with them and how to achieve what I envision in my mind. I have not been truly excited or inspired until I found YOU!! You are such an amazing and conscientious teacher and you have changed my watercolor world. :) One question... which palette are you using that is the smaller, rectangular one?
Yes 🙌 “Watercolor is meant to be spontaneous, fresh, and fluid.” 13:35 That’s a mantra that’s going to run through my head while I’m painting from now on.
Fabulous! My early paintings were stiff, stale and uptight....😆. I'm still working on it. Thank you Jackie.
Very clear and thorough step by step instructions. Thank you.
I am that person who shies away from mixing colors because I feel like I don’t do a good job with it and I don’t want to waste paint. But I do see how many artists do this so I am determined to do more experimenting-thank you for this lesson-always appreciate your generosity in sharing your knowledge with us ❤ - Bonnie
Hello Louise. Enjoying this video is an understatement for me. This is such an educational, informative, and detailed presentation. Just excellent on all levels. I have been collecting supplies and watvhing videos for quite a while, without actually starting. As a retired educator I want to learn as much as I can first. I do have an interest and background of doing a lot acrylic painting years ago. Many, many different arts and crafts starting at a very young age. Now I finally want to add watercolor to the list. Having watched already, many helpful watercolor tutorials on paint and mixing, I feel that yours is superior, and I am so appreciative that I found your site. (I happily subscribed.)
Thank you very much for your kind words Jan and welcome! ❤️
Thank you for your precise explanations about watercolors. . I just found you on the internet!!!
Fantastic job explaining so many important hidden variables to watercolor success. Thank you❣️
Glad it was helpful! Thank you Connie. ❤️
You always teach me something and make me feel like a teacher I can respect and especially like! Thank you for all your hard work!
Thank you for this video, helped with a number of things I’m struggling with at the moment. Love the idea of the colour mixing journal.
Thank You Alana. 💚
I like the color mixing journal, too. I am going to start one
I love your bloopers -makes you so authentic and fun!
Thank you so much, Louise! This, and really all of your videos that I have seen so far, have been so extremely helpful to me as a beginning watercolor artist. I appreciate your generosity in sharing all that you’ve learned with us. And the humor at the end of the videos always make me laugh. So thanks again. I can’t wait to watch and learn more from you! 💝
These tips you are teaching us are so helpful thank you so much
Good point Louise about seeing the colour on your painting to judge intensity.👍 very good information 🥰
Thank you Louise for another really helpful video. Your paintings are beautiful, i really like your duck you did. Love the bloopers too 😂
Thank you for your great videos. You're such a sweetheart. 😊
Thank so much Cynthia. 🥰
Louise, I love your videos and the end boo-boos are hilarious 😂❤
Thanks very much Tanya. 💚
I could not get the effect I wanted until I tried your tip about mixing the colours on the paper. Thank you so much.
You’re welcome 😊
I used to be petrified mixing my greens when I started with watercolor... Bought green in every shade I could find 🥲
Recently, I finally realised the potential and rid of the fear, I'm so sad I didn't just focus on the yellow blue and reds instead haha I'm experimenting mixing with the greens to make them a lot more natural but I have loooots of green to work through 😅
Live and learn I guess!!!
Thank you Louise for the great tips!❤
Very good video. Thank you.

Your tips are sooo sooo helpful! Thank You again, coming back from blending video to this.
I tried more limited pallete as mentioned in tip #7 5:56 . It gave me so much more understanding how color theory, warmth, cold etc. in colors works ❤
I’ve just discovered your channel , and oh my , info abounding . Loving all the advise . I’m pretty new to all this but enjoying your style and wonderful presentations . Liking the bloopers at the end too . Binge watched you tonight and just realised I haven’t eaten , and it’s 22:58 ! Just subscribed .

Just loved your very helpful tips, and the section on mixing paint was just what I was looking for. The bloopers at the end were a complete and wonderful surprise. Thanks for your sharing your expertise.
Great Tips, thank you👌🙏
Thank you Louise! I always learn from your experience 🙏🏻
Yes, this is so helpful. You confirm what I am learning and you assure us that this is not a perfect science. We must let the water do what it wants to do.
Wonderful video!!!
One of the best watercolor videos that I have watched. Thank you!
Thanks for the great tips!
Great tips and demos. Thank you!❤
Merci Louise pour tous ces conseils.
Everything you paint is just beautiful
Thank you Kelly. 🥰
I'm thankful you are mixing your colors. You have always painted stunning works of art but the addition of mixed colors really adds a dimension that adds depth.
The most valuable class I ever took online was Jane Blundell's Mastering Watercolour course. Not only did she use a limited palette, but the course had students painting mixing charts while they explored different triads. Without even knowing it, you were connected with color theory and harmony, all while learning various watercolor techniques. There is something amazing about Aussie instructors. You and Jane have been amazing guides through my watercolor journey. I appreciate you both. Now I know exactly which colors to mix to obtain the color I want, and if it's a color I don't mix all the time, all I have to do is break out my trusty mixing carts I painted during class.
BTW, it was so smart to have Dom paint using your instruction. I was a realtor for many years and there is nothing that taught me more about what my clients went through than moving. Every realtor should be required to move every 3 years to humble them to the process. Hats off to Dom! Your family ROCKS!
Thank you for sharing these tips, Louise. They’re really helpful.
Great tutorial Louise thank you ,very interesting and just what I needed . I will also start a mixing journal, thank you for sharing with us xx
Excelent class! Thanks a lot! Peace
Thank you for this video
My pleasure Kathryn. Thank you!
Fantastic instruction😊😊😅😅😅
A very useful video indeed - thanks Louise!
So helpful. Thanks for sharing your experience. PS, love the outtakes!
I wish I could go back to my beginner days. I have so many convenience colors and I feel like I HAVE to use them. They weren't cheap, you know!
I hear you! Me too Erica- so many colours I didn't need. Thanks.
I have ten colors. I limit myself.my favorite art teacher used to say they make a lot of colors so they can sell a lot of paint
Thankyou thankyou thankyou, I learned soo much with this video.
Thank you so much for patiently and clearly explaining.
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much for this! These tips will really help! I enjoyed your bloopers at the end as well!
Thank you! 🤩
Such a helpful video. Wish I could give it a hundred likes. So many aspects of mixing wish I had seen it decades ago. Thank you very much.
Love the Steven Quiller palette! That’s what I use plus a little dish if my painting is larger and I save my dried paint. I keep( usually ha) my mixes separated on my palette but sometimes I just need to wipe the area that sneaks over to another color. I really appreciate that you mentioned the technique of charging the wash or adding in while wet, it creates some of the most spontaneous beautiful backgrounds and just the surprises that make us chuckle. I do a lot of botanicals but still keep the general common colors and I do love Winsor and Newton agua color. Holy cow it mixes beautifully and I mix it with my greens especially if a cooler on is needed. I have purchased a few Qor paints lately to compare. WN still has in my opinion the best and closest lightfast color to indigo in case anyone wanted to test 7 brands. What can I say , you are a dear and your reminders are always wonderful for this artist.😊
I bought WN indigo for workshop because instructor had it and color worked best. If only they used same formulation tube and pans. Normally use DS/m Graham because they rewet super easily.
@@Scottlp2 I just buy tubes, in my plein air palette I just made my own with whole pans since I am slightly a slob with those tiny half pans :)
Brilliant what I needed thank you very useful and informative. Have a great day.
Love your art
Very well put together tutorial!Your voice is so relaxing,no pressure lovely!
These are invaluable tips as always. My favorite is not to overblend because it is so much more interesting to have the variations. I usually "cheat" with sap or hooker's green and add other colors to them (but never use straight from the tube). You've inspired me to create my yellow/blue color chart.
Side note - this blouse looks spectacular on you! The blue is incredible and lights up your skin and face beautifully.
Many thanks! Nice to learn from your experience!
My pleasure. Thanks Lynn.
Thank you so much Louise. You have a wonderful way of explaining the process so its simple to understand and yes, I think all artistic people are visual. Your channel and knowledge you share is so informative and easy to follow. Cant wait for the next one, in the meantime I will practice mixing better with a limited pallet, the limited pallet has been my own challenge this month so this worked in well with that also.
Your tips and tricks have been very helpful. I really appreciate you sharing this with us. Thank you very much.❤
Thank you so much for your wonderful explanation Louise De Masi🙏 and I love your way of explanation also❤❤❤
Thank you, very useful 🎉
I have the ceramic quiller palette, but I haven’t filled it yet. I’m inspired to do it now. Thank you!
I think it’s important to remember advise on watercolor techniques is tied to the type of watercolor one is doing. If you’re a realist who depends on photography and life as a subject the approach to color will be entirely different than an artist who creates imagery from their imagination. If I’m painting a realist tulip, yes, keep the colors to a minimum but if I’m painting an abstraction, I can pull out every color known to man - if I want.
Thanks again Louise always great to watch one of your videos. Big hello from Queensland😊
Excelente!!
I wish I had known all this when I was beginning
Excellent, excellent teaching!!!❤
Fantastic tips
Very helpful.
You explained everything so well. Thank you! You have a new subscriber. 😃👍
I think have a crush on this lady because of her voice! (well, and her talent, content, and adorable face, to, I guess).
Great video ... a lot of good points to store away and use as and when. Thank you for posting.
Glad it was helpful. Thank you Rod.
this is exactly the kind of instruction I’ve been looking for. Seeing you actually mix the colours is enormously helpful. I am guilty of mixing them ‘like cake batter’. I will try your suggestion of giving them just a quick mix
That might be my trouble I am not a visual person at all. I love colour and I think that I understand it. I just add a drip off of my fingers to add water to paint. I was drawn to watercolor but I do think it is a lot more complex than other mediums. It's lovely to watch your video's and see how beautiful your painting are. Thank you 💖
Great tips.i learned the hard way lol
😂😂😂 outtakes, love it!!
I loved your slide transition sounds😅
Bravo Louise!
Thank you Cynthia! 🥰
Great video Louise. It was good to watch your process as, for some reason, I get really nervous about mixing paint. I don't know why 😅
The thing about not swatching a color on a different piece of paper first makes sense. Specially if the painting has advanced because color is relative to the colors surrounding it so, even if you swatch it in a different piece of paper first, it would still look different once you use it in the painting.
