    Back pain can be so debilitating and at times depressing! You start thinking about when things were “normal” and you could move around without giving a second thought to sitting, standing, bending, etc. Basic things in life becomes hard to do and it takes a toll on mental health when several months / years have gone by without much improvement! The thing that helps me to keep my self positive is to think of the ones who are suffering even more than you and be greatful! For example, someone who is paralyzed and can’t even move has it even harder vs being able to move even if it’s with pain. Hopefully, looking at things this way might brighten your day!

    I had two herniated discs I put up with for a few years - some days not too bad & others - painful. Finally got so bad I couldn't even put my foot down without it feeling like a blowtorch was being applied to my whole leg. MRI found one moderate herniated disc and one severe. My surgeon said therapy wouldn't help so I promptly had a micro discectomy. Felt so great to wake up in the recovery room with no sciatic pain! By evening, they had me up & walking down the hall & back. By next late afternoon, I went home. Had to wear a back brace for 6 weeks & told to walk at least 20 minutes a day to strengthen muscles. This was 25 years ago.

    I had a severely herniated disc and had surgery in May of 2023. It’s November 2023 and some of my sciatica came back. These simple excercises along with walking a treadmill at 15 degrees for 20 minutes a day (at a comfortable speed) har made it go from shooting pain to a dull ache, and now it’s pretty much nonexistent. similar case here, except my sciatica came back 3 years after my MD surgery. What triggered it is a 9 hour long flight(sitting). I do notice that walking makes it better, but mornings when I wake up are unbearable. I can hardly stand long enough to brush my teeth and take a piss. Forget going #2. I bulged a disc in college, and it hurt horrendously and plagued me for months. Eventually it resolved. Every once in a while, it'll flare up if I do something extreme. Usually settles within a few weeks. Doing back hyperextentions on a Roman Chair was key to my recovery. Turns out, bulged discs are pretty common amoungst pro athletes. The NFL and NBA are full of players who have undergone treatment for them. Not a life sentence.

    Been suffering with Sciatica for nearly 1.5 months. It has gotten alot better over the weeks and only hurts when I'm sitting, but I finally had reached a standstill. Started doing the "push up" and at first the pain in my glute was horrible. After about 5 repitions, I noticed the pain was going away fast and my range of motion improved. By the 7th rep, I was able to push all the way up with barely anything in the glute. I went to 12. Gave it a rest for a few minutes then tried 12 again. The first 4 reps were a little painful in the glute, but went away by the 5th rep. Anyone trying this, if you can only go part way, do a bunch of reps only part way. Keep at it. Thank you for the video!

The inversion table felt good, but as soon as I was upright, the pain got much worse than before. The secret was a towel under my pelvis while in banana roadkill position. As soon as I said I ain't spemdin no more money the pain came roaring back. Haven't been able to work for over 5 months. When I ice my back it helps but if I try to do much manual labour my back locks up. Nothing left to do now but get surgery done in Germany hopefully. Tears me up when I can't hold my daughter for more then 5 minutes. These guys need to be more honest and say if your disc ruptured eventually you will be on the operation table. That's fact.

    Omg it's literally 12am and one of those nights where I can find ZERO comfort in any slesp positions. I'm nearly in tears due to pain and frustration. It took a year to determine what may have been sciatica or something else to getting an MRI this week that confirmed two buldging disc. I usually put a rolled pillow under my pelvis or a pillow between my knees because I felt like that was something I always saw people do but found no relief. The pain brought me to youtube to find SOMETHING ANYTHING that will help. I swear laying on the double pillow vertically gave me relief immediately, as soon as I tried it I can feel the pressure, the pain, everything just easing up. I will take an improvement of any sort as a victory. I may get a good night's rest tonight. This video was so informational! I am also happy to know I may not be too far gone and there could be hope to correcting this issue. Who knew a short video would help with an issue I've been suffering with for 3 years! Just wanted to express a heartfelt thank you to you guys! - a grateful new subscriber!!!

      Hey Brittany, I just got my MRI results back a month ago. However, my pain is actually getting better. Believe it or not, if you obsess over doing sit-ups with an ab mat, your pain will get much better. Throw in some dead bug exercises and you will be good to go. It takes patience and you have to obsess over getting your core strong, but the pain will subside nearly instantly when you start doing sit-ups. You may need to do assisted sit-ups to start, but that’s totally fine. Hopefully this helps.

    • @lanyburnett7966
      @lanyburnett7966 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Brittany W I could tell the sit-ups were helping after about a week. The key it to make sure you do them on some kind of mat. I use a Rogue Wise Crack ab mat that works really well. I think it puts the right amount of pressure on your low back and discs while still engaging your core muscles. They were really painful at first and I had to assist myself doing them with using my arms under my legs. Now, I do minimum 400 every other day unassisted. Pain went from a 10 in November when I could barely role out of bed, to a 1 or 2 on the worst days now. I still have to be careful with deadlifts, but I am back to doing most exercises again. You really have to obsess with making your core stronger. That’s the key. Hopefully this helps! And if you’re curious, I have disc bulge at L5-S1 and at L4-L5.

    You guys are so great - thank you for everything you share here. Have you done a video like this (with detailed/incremental movements and sleep suggestions) for herniated discs in the cervical spine?
    Also (sorry!), it seems moves aimed at fixing bulges or hernias generally apply pressure to the side of the disc that is herniated or bulging (or lift pressure from the opposite side, to stop squeezing the disc away from there), but is there a risk that the two bones on the side that is injured could trap the injured disc in between and cause more damage, or keep the herniated material from re-entering the disc?
    Would be really great to hear your thoughts on that, there's so much I need to learn right now. I've just been diagnosed with a herniated C4/5 and C6/7 (C6/7 is worse). Chin tucks, suggested in another of your videos, are working quite well, and I'm keen to try some more. Am really keen to avoid surgery if at all possible, also live in Japan so am grappling with a language barrier with doctors etc. as well as health care culture gaps. I have been having herniated disc and sciatica since 19 years old , now 23 , the pain come and goes because i know how to take care of my body (and hurt it , cause once healed i go back to play basketball and injured it again) , best tips that really helped me to feel no pain at all is only one thing , swimming breast stroke , dont do any other pose , just breast stroke , and try to swim atleast 30 minutes straight without stopping ( let your spine stay afloat for 30 mins ) everyday for 2 weeks , and tell me if it has helped you or not.. then watch lots of youtube , do exercise that helped reduce the pain, and not make it worse .. but no 1 are always , swimming non stop for 30 mins straight . Or more is better , one other tips are actually your sleeping position, like your bed hardness , pillow , spine pillow, and pillow on your legs, if every morning you wake up and feels more pain, you have to switch your sleeping style !

      It is believed that a bulge or herniation creates more symptoms the further it strays from the vertebrae center. Nerves are arranged so that the portions closest to the midline of the body go to closer areas and portions farthest from the midline of the body go to farthest areas of the body. Example: The outer portion of the sciatic nerve will travel all the way to the big toe. The inner portion may only travel to the buttocks.

    As a physical therapist, I can tell you it was my iliopsoas ( I don't have a herniated disc) and it took WEEKS of the correct exercise, and muscle inhibition to see improvement. But with that said, prone took away the sciatic pain, and with continued daily positioning I was able to centralize the pain. But the big key is, as these guys know, is it takes diligence in positioning daily in your pain relieving position to reduce nerve irritation. Great vid guys

    Laying down or standing up doesn’t kill the pain for me. Sitting down hurts my tailbone, laying down I feel the sharp pain through my hips and leg, and standing or walking makes it even worse. Tried shots, therapy, acupuncture, you name it... living with the pain 24 hours a day is making me real depressed. I’ve been in this pain for 3 years now.

      Have you seen a McKenzie Certified Physical therapist? This is my best recommendation. Google Bob and Brad, how to find a McKenzie therapist. This video will show you how to find one. I am sorry for your situation and wish you well soon.

    Bob&Brad - Thanks for the mass of info you've posted on sciatica/herniated disc. I've had pain from this issue for the past 4 weeks and found the Cobra/push up technique really helpful. However, I've found the relief short lived, maybe 15/30 minutes. I've tried the other exercises elsewhere on your site in the mix included in my self care. Can you suggest from your experience what to expect in terms of progress and timescales? I'm in the position that I can't work properly as I travel a lot and sitting in a car for several hours is a killer when I get out at the other end so this sciatic pain potentially is affecting my livelihood so your thoughts would be much appreciated.
