How I Healed My Back Pain Herniated Disc | Yoga for Lower Back Pain Relief

- This is a 15-minute routine for low back pain from a herniated disc. These are exercises and stretches that I used to help with my lower back issues and can also help with facet joint syndrome and sciatica, which were issues I also had in conjunction with the herniated discs. Always listen to your body and never push into pain. Back off when you need to, take it easy, and be kind to your spine : )

I almost started crying listening to you, I also skated, surfed, snowboarded and played basketball a lot. I am now 25 and feel like my back has aged so much faster than the rest of my body. I can‘t sit still for longer than an hour before my back gets too painful. I felt so heard, thank you.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for the feedback.
I feel you bro mahn its tough
I’m tearing up watching the first section of this video, at the age of 21 I have had chronic back pain for over a year now, been to 4 doctors over 10+ appointments, had X-rays, ultrasounds, looked into ibs, diet, Endometriosis etc. all who have told me in the end “we don’t know why you have pain”. Now saving up money for an osteopath at the moment, but yoga has been the only thing that has helped (I’ve been doing for 3 months now). Thank you for talking about this!
I'm on my 30's going through a similar experience, trying to find the cause of severe back pain on my periods and doctors just say "it's normal to feel pain" 😓 Now, a good osteopath, one that you trust, can help a lot 🤞🏻
Have you read or listened to this? www.amazon.com/Healing-Back-Pain-audiobook/dp/B00005NRA7/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=35VGW4KVF0OFV&keywords=sarno+back+pain+book&qid=1706874330&sprefix=sarno+ba%2Caps%2C226&sr=8-1
I’ve actually been reading a different but similar book “the way out” by Alan Gordon, which is, as far as I could tell from reviews, a newer, more scientifically backed approach to the exact same idea. His patients have all been cured or healed dramatically as a result of somatic tracking, essentially a medical word for being mindful of your pain. It’s worked miracles already for me! I only found it because of this other book you mentioned, so thank you!
@@islasloan6595 yah, it’s the same thing, different words. I’ve read Gordon too, he’s awesome. Glad you found him!
Need an mri to find out if you have a herniated disk. Mine is pushing on the nerve and cause my pain. This is my second time going thru this. In most cases it can be treated without surgery. Need to strengthen your back and core. Swimming helped me out alot.
Two years ago i had sciatica, it hurt so much i could barely sit nor stand for 5 min. It affected everything in my life, from sleeping to stepping off the curb to walking….I had gone through all the treatments but not until i found Osteopath and that combine with acupuncture saved me. Tim was right, treatments are nothing unless you walk regularly. I was advised to walk 30 min everyday, but mindfully about how your body is moving, core and pelvis. Then walked 1 hour everyday. Almost a year later, I don’t even notice it anymore! I’m still trying to do the walks, but no need for any treatments now. Daily yoga also helps (body and soul). Thank you Tim for sharing your story.
Great insights. Thanks for sharing
Respectfully, your journey stated in largely anecdotal. Simple walking will neither fix nor significantly affect positively most people with chronic low back pain. I know from experience.
@@hammill444 I think the point was it’s part of a holistic approach, and walking is one of the great methods of moving overlooked for fancy gym or fitness routines, but your right walking alone like won’t fix someone’s chronic pain
Thank you for Sharing your story and videos Tim

Thanks Tim, this was great. I've also found Dr. Sarno's work really helpful
Awesome! Good to hear
Thank you. I found your gentle nature and style very helpful. really resonated what you said about feeling like you need to stretch hard to match the level of sensation you get from the pain - but how that isn't actually what your body needs. So thank you!
Great. Thanks Felix
I have low back herniated disc and I started to follow you and, in 2020, I started to practice yoga following you videos. Since then I sincerely my pains almost are gone and I want to thank you for all the videos that you are doing and for the help that you gave me. I recomend always your channel to whoever wants to feel better. Thank you!
Identical story here . #COVIDBABYYOGI
Wonderful! Thank you Aldina
😉
Same here, thank you Tim!
Thank you all for sharing how these exercises have helped heal your lower back pain. I have started to get sciatic pain and lower back pain after I got my 1st covid vaccination. Back then I was doing nearly everyday hiking, walking up the mountain and doing hospitality work that required a few hours of standing and bending. I'm starting to think this is where I've caused stress and lower back pain and plus with the amount of stress I was experiencing at work. Last year I got and MRI lower back scanned and doctors told me I have hernia disc bulging, My doctor recommended two things I can do to help my lower back pain situation. 1. Is to have a surgery and I was recommended to see a specialist to see if I need a surgery. 2. See a physio to help me manage this pain with regular exercises. The past few years I have not been able to do physical activities that requires long periods of time standing and do cooking or cleaning around my house that requires quite a bit of bending., cause they totally devastate my back and legs to a point that I have to rest for a few days of doing any housework or movement, walking etc. for my back to heal up again. It's a horrible pain which I've mentioned to a work colleague of mine and he told me he used to have this problem too and told me about certain stretches and exercises that we can do and help heal and put the hernia disc back where it should be and decrease the pain. If it wasn't because of you folks I would have got a lower back surgery to try remove the issue, not targeting with the issue heads on which later on might end up causing more injury on my back and with movement overtime. I've heard stories about people that have had surgery for this lower back issue and years down the track it have continued to cause other neck spine back pain issues I don't want to have a lower back surgery ever, I think it's quite risky and can cause more issues than doing any one any good once these parts of our body is ever opened and allow parts of our internal bones or organs being touched through harsh surgeries.
Thank you for helping me heal.
You are so welcome
Thanks for this great session Tim! Even though I have been doing yoga for many years, I still get these bouts of back pain. So this is much appreciated.
Glad it helps!
I'm thrilled to have found you today! I've been dealing with a nagging pull in my lower back, but your yoga instruction has been incredibly helpful. Thank you for sharing your gift.
So glad it was helpful!
Great gentle stretches that felt so good for my scoliosis. I usually wake up very stiff and shaking out coupled with your mobility & your yoga first thing in the morning & bedtime brings great relief. Thank you for this! And ALL of your videos.
You're so welcome! Good to hear it helps 😉
Thank you! Your dog is soooo cute😍🥰💕🐶🐕
His name is Ollie 😉
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Tim! I’ve always enjoyed practicing with you, but only recently returned to your classes after a hiatus of a few years. I noticed that there was something different about the way you were teaching. And you seemed different too, somehow . And now I understand why. The wisdom gained from your back injury allows you to share your teaching at a much deeper level, and I want you to know how much I’ve been enjoying what I’ve been learning from you. Thank you, Tim!
You’re welcome. This happened 12 years ago, so it wasn’t that :)
This is exactly what I needed! I also suffer from a lower back herniated disk Constant pain. A BIG thank you for this one Tim❤👏🙌
Welcome Daphne
Gotta love the dog chilling in the back 💙

I don’t have back pain but I do enjoy the stretch and learn something new again. Thank you for sharing your experience and the clear instruction as always. Still here on your challenge. Thank you. 🙏
Cool Stay with it
Thank you.. I love that it’s gentle because you’re right intuitively I want to stretch it but it brings no real relief. I will be practicing this & following you!
Thank you Susanna
Thanks a lot for your honesty sharing your own struggles and pain. This is really appreciated and hope your videos helps us all have a better body consciousness 😊🙏🏼✨
Thanks Adriana
I’ve been dealing with lower back pain and leg pain all the way down to my foot since I threw out my back last summer. What really spoke to me in this video was the comments about how repressed emotions can lead to lower back pain and tension. When I threw out my back, I was dealing with really difficult financial stress and work stress. Watching this felt really validating and honestly like you were reading my mind. Excited to go on a journey of healing.
Great comments! Thanks Jared
Would love to see a follow up of this! Great video
👍
This was great!
I have scoliosis and lumber spine arthritis. These gentle sessions are really helpful!
I will use these stretches in my teaching.
Thank you!
😉
Thank you Tim. I shared this with our daughter who has scoliosis.
Let me know if it helps
Thank you Tim, for sharing about you back pain journey, loved the stretches!!
My pleasure!
Thank you for sharing. I’ll definitely try these exercises. I’m 40 and have been dealing with lower back pain since I was 26 from moving heavy patients at work. It’s been quite a mental, emotional, and physical journey. I'm glad you're feeling better and sharing your teaching with others. ❤️🙏🏻
Thank you. Wishing you the best
I have a low back pain flare up for 2 months now and your practice is life shaving.thank you🙏

J aime votre sagesse Tim !!! merci 🙏 Sylvie 😊🐾
je suis tellement contente que tu l'apprécies. Merci Sylvie
Thank you so much for these exercises. I will do them and tell you how it goes, but after doing them just one time I already feel my back more relaxed! 🙏
You're so welcome!
Agree many of us suffered from same situation. But yes proper knowledge and right person with right practice it can resolve 🎉
Hello, thank you so much for this amazing introduction to yoga. Just what I’ve been looking for after a lifetime of action sports but having suffered a few injuries wanting to strengthen and care for my body better. You are both calming and clear in your guidance and in combining strength and gentleness in your movements. Lovely glimpses of your labradoodle in the background, big bonus ❤
You are so welcome and welcome to the channel! If you're looking for beginner type classes we have them. In the search bar on my site type in beginner and you’ll see the beginner videos 😉
This was amazing 😻 who knew just 15 minutes could make such a big difference? (Well I, because this challenge has taught me that, among other incredible things!) thank you ❤
Awesome. Thanks Lilla
Wow Tim, what can I say! I’ve had lower back issues for years - L4 and L5 pain from Scoliosis, more recently moving into my hips and groin affecting sleep and mood and definitely not helping my golf swing! Found this on you tube this morning and felt all the pain and tension melting away as I followed your stretches 🙏 thank you so much, I will carry this on as you’ve suggested and have subscribed for when I feel ready to change it up with your other stretches and workouts, thanks again
You got it! Thanks Cris
Thank you for sharing this Tim, I have an herniated disc and the times that I’ve had lots of pain where exactly during stressful moments in my life or before important changes. It is emotional and I am going to buy the book! Thank you so much ☺️
You got it. Thanks
Very informative video. The stretches made my back feel looser. Back pain is the worst! Thanks, Tim.
Happy to help!
Thank you for this, really found it at the right time. Also your recommended reading, walking, PT, DO, etc ques me your integration of other healing paths and encourages me on the multifaceted path I’m on. Really thanks for sharing.
You're so welcome. Thank you!
Thanks, Tim! Practicing yoga with you for 9 years has really helped my lower back. You taught me how to stretch my lumbar and also to mobilize my thoracic spine. Spinal twists are a big help too. I am 71 but my back feels younger than that once I get up and do a few yoga stretches in the morning. You are the best. Namaste.
Good to hear all this. Thank you Vicki 😉
Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm struggling with sacroiliac pain for months now, doing physiotherapy and all but with little effect cause they all want you to jam into the exercises. Now I understand how a more gentle practice like this is way better. I've done the first yoga challenges back in the day, missed the last one because of the pain but using this as an encouragement to heal soon and get back to practicing your yoga challenges 🙏🏻
Thank you once again for all you work.
You're so welcome! And so glad to hear it's helping. Thank you Tabby
🙏 I keep coming back to these back practices! I have prolapsed discs from many years of high impact exercises & I too discovered yoga after advice from my consultant as I refused to have an operation. That was around 17 years ago and now with lots of walking & yoga, rarely have any problems or pain. This practice is particularly great after a mountain climb or a hard hike. Been with you since COVID & so thank you Tim for your inspiring classes! 😊
Thanks for the update Linda - Good to hear 😉
Thx Tim Love your help ❤😂
You're so welcome. Thanks Sherry 😉
good for you. impressive.
Thanks!
This session was so good, Tim.....words fall short! I felt my stress melting away :) Thank you also for sharing your journey back to a healthy back without any surgeries. My Pranayama has improved with your various offerings at CMC as well as my knees. Keep up with the healing work.I look forward to your monthly classes. I will continue to support you :)
Thank you Usha. So good to hear all that!
At the end of the video you called this the “back hair” series.😅 I laughed so hard I hurt my back. I’ve been watching for years, really appreciate your videos. Thanks Tim
Hahha! Thanks Matthew
I can feel the benefit immediately, gentle movement and stretches!
Thanks a Lot for this, Tim!
...and, as always.....Heeellooooo Ollie! 🫶🏻
My pleasure! Ollie says Woof!
Thanks for sharing your journey, Tim. I think I was going about healing my back pain in all the wrong ways. Thanks to your video, I'm rethinking my approach and feeling better. Bought Dr. Sarno's book and I look forward to reading it.
Thanks Kelley. Let me know how it goes for you
I really liked this routine and wish there were more routines like this as my health's declined quite a lot over the years so i dont have enough strength and too much pain to follow the yoga classes I used to take and although i ve learned to modify i tend to get a bit frustrated to see i have to modify more and more (i m getting better at it though :) ). Have a great Sunday Tim and thanks so much for this routine!
You're welcome Eleonore
Thank you so much. Namaste 🙏❤️🐾
You're welcome Namaste
Lovely class, Tim. This entire series has been a joy. Namaste!
Great to hear it. Thank you Pietro Namaste
Your introduction really resonated with me. I too have been living with lower back pain. Yoga is the only thing that effectively treats my condition. I am inspired by your own journey.
Thank you Brian
Thanks Tim. L5 S1 sciatica for me. Really enjoying this video. Love the gentle movements and your calm slow approach to healing instead of all the other quick fix vids that pop up on TH-cam. Will keep following and looking fwd to progressing to your other programs in the coming weeks/months. Thanks again from 🇦🇺 👍👍
You're welcome Troy. Let me know how it goes for you
@@yogawithtim Hi Tim. Im feeling some improvement already and will keep doing this video over the next few weeks. What do you recommend as your next video to specifically help strengthen the core after a bulged disc injury.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Love from India i worked in aiims Delhi it is very common disease thanks for spreading awareness.
Thank you
Thanks Tim. I had a centre back issue six years ago, that totally shocked me, and the only thing that helped me reclaim my body and free me from pain was mindful movement. This led to my training to teach yoga and Pilates. I love the calmness of your practices, and often come back to them.
Thank you for sharing
Grazie , thanks I really need it
Prego. Good to hear
Thank you, thank you, thank you! God bless you, your video is the ONLY thing that had help me to walk somewhat normal after I herniated my disk this week. No medicine, no massage nothing had helped me as much s the movements on this video. Literally GOD sent.
You're welcome. Glad to hear you're feeling better
Thank you for this. Like you I was stretching as much as could doing my normal yoga routine believing it would help the healing process. But the pain was getting worse..Now after doing this I realise how my over stretching was actually hindering the healing process. So grateful and looking forward to moving on to more videos as my back feels ready to.
Good insight 😉
Best find!!! Thank you🙌
Bed bound with herniated disc
I’m in excruciating pain …could only do the movements with laying on my back and raised legs slowly moving side to side
and it instantly gave me relief 😊
So good to hear this!
I've been struggling with the pain and anxiety related to lower back arthritis and disc herneation for the better part of a year now. I work as a first responder and have dealt with the fear of what may happen if I hurt my back again on a call. After deciding that a change was needed, I began working on regularly doing yoga, strengthening more core, and doing increased cardio to improve my overall fitness. This video has been one of the ones I repeatedly come back to as being especially helpful with reducing lower back pain and has genuinely made a huge impact on my physical and mental health. Thank you so much for making this available to myself and others!
get the book he mentions Healing Back Pain by Dr. Sarno. Your pain and anxiety will likely go away
My pleasure. I’m glad to hear that it’s helping you.
Last year I went to bump my yoga practice to a daily routine, and found your challenge last year, so I had a way to focus my own practice and work on healing a pinched nerve in my back. My chiropractor office has bugged me several times because they say I am "over due" for an appointment. But--I have bested that pinched nerve through my daily, focused practice with you. Thank you - even before today's lesson.
Great to hear Thanks
Will watch it later, very interesting 🧐
Hope you like it!
