President's Challenge, Dec. 2015

  • Although I could have played it safe by doing one of the kinds of holiday ornaments I have done many times before, for the final President's Challenge in 2015 I sought out something new and challenging by turning a multi-axis snowman ornament with a tilted hat.
The most challenging part was figuring out how to make this ornament without the use of an expensive, specialty chuck. The idea for the approach I came up with is derived from a combination of the collet insert from last month's President's Challenge, and they way I do multi-axis goblets.
Contrary to what I expected, the more I explore multi-axis turing, the more I find that I do NOT rely on specialty chucks, instead relying on the creative use of standard turning accessories and a little augmentation with simple jigs. I find this discovery exciting because I suspect many turners never give multi-axis turning a try because of the assumed initial cost of buying special accessories.

One of the best. Now, I'm really running late because I couldn't stop watching it.

I have watched all of your President's challenge videos and while a couple are a little beyond my skill level at the moment, they have all educated, entertained and given inspirations. Many thanks for all your time and effort in making these videos, the anticipation of seeing them is always exciting.
This video is a great one too and although I am watching this on 26 Dec, the technique could be applied to all sorts of off-centre stuff.
Thank you again, enjoy your festive break and I look forward to watching you again in 2016.
