Mine failed today on my 2012 C250. After researching this online, it is apparently VERY common and quite honestly Mercedes should have a recall on this. I am surprised that there isnt a class action law suit for this. My car left me stranded today and is still sitting in a parking lot until I have it towed.
@@rudolf_1074 I had to have it towed home. I then did the work myself which was indeed very involved. Pulled the entire driver side dash, underneath panels, steering wheel, airbag assembly and entire steering column. Removed the ESL and replaced with a bypass module. Reinstalled everything and has been working great. Total cost for part and programming: $220 Towing: $140 Time: 9 hours Mercedes wanted $2100 and would be a 3 month wait...
Great channel. I appreciate that everything doesn't go perfect (just like in the real world). No need the edit out mistakes. That's one item that makes this channel great. 👍
Another great procedure, hood popped, take care of it, I dropped my 10mm socket into the intake, get it out NOW. SAVE your files now. BRO, if it's hot out pls keep some water with you, we older guys need to keep hydrated. Lucky for me I live up on a mountain top on a Tropical Island and it is never hot nor humid up here in Baguio City, Philippines, but will be moving to FLORIDA next year. OMG Thanks for showing us another way to do this job. In Japan all junk shop parts are cheap so I built hundreds of adaptor harnesses and BOBs myself, real time savers for sure.
Xhorse ftw, one thing I’d recommend when doing this type of work, is to create folders for the car you’re working on that way you always select the correct files. I do folders inside folders as well to save my read and write data separate from each other.
This is great information! I've never done them this way with an emulator. I'll definitely be investing in this. MB is one of the most common vehicles I work on. Thanks Sherwood!
Love it this video! I have seen I think all videos related to this problem and what I like of this one is that You didn't edit mistake and that way we know how to overcome if we made the same mistake. Can I have Mike info BTW?
You are correct for the A number, the 204 is the model number, it's also in the VIN ( WDD204.0xx.). Though a tip, the sticker is specifically made for that model, BUT don't trust every single part number on MB, a lot of them are cross platform, so the number after the A is not always specific to each model.
This just happened to my C 300 thankfully I was home, from what I understand this is a common problem, this should be a recall, I am waiting for the part to come in. 2,500 at Mercedes, 1,300 at my mechanic which is still expensive. My steering wheel locked, love my car but not happy that this is a commom problem that has not been addresses by Mercedes.
Great video. I am an automotive locksmith and local to UHS. They are my last choice to buy from. They sell to any Chuck in a truck. Non licensed guys working out of their trunks. They also sell to their clients customers. One of my guys happened to be there picking up some Fobs and another locksmith purchased an ignition for his customer. My guy overheard the locksmith call his customer that he was on the way over with the part. The customer was elated that he already picked the part up from UHS and just needed the locksmith to install it. I only buy from them in an emergency situation. We also have thousands of dollars of bad aftermarket fobs we bought from them. Lesson learned. We only use OEM and OEM refurbs. We are friendly with most of the other busy local locksmiths and we all feel the same about them. We run 100-150 just automotive calls per week. Sorry for the rant but they are not good people to deal with.
I had no idea. Just who I've always used. We aren't close to anything so I just buy online. Good to know. Someone else mentioned American Key Supply. Maybe I'll check them out.
@@theroyaltyautoservice Unless you are local to them you would have no way of knowing. Just imagine your parts suppliers selling to your customers at the same prices you pay. That's what they do.
Great video Sherwood! I would have liked to have seen how you fixed the the first emulator after the programming got messed up. Were you just able to overwrite it or did you have to somehow wipe it first. I had this problem before and was told the emulator was garbage but I still have it because I didn't believe it. Thank you for your time and the braids do help in the heat, I do the same! 😄👍🏻
I went to the bottom right button W204 Emulator and went through the 2 steps. I don't know if that cleared it or not but I think it did. As I watched what I did again on the video I think I clicked the wrong file completely on the first attempt to write the emulator. I definitely think it can be cleared and reused but can't say 100%. Thanks!!

So you still have to drop the column to get it unlocked? I have one at my shop in the way and the customer lost the key. Was trying to move it but can’t steer
How did you go? Did you call a car locksmith or a Merc dealer? I have electrical power when fob is inserted, but just won’t allow car to start. I am in North Sydney and about to go down this path.
I really would like to speak to you directly regarding this issue. My daughter’s car. The dealership had me to replace other things and now saying more when this is the issue she’s having. Please let me know how to reach you for your opinion
My steering column is fine, but my car has a remote disabling device on it somewhere, and the car was shut down in my driveway. I have the Title, and the car is owned outright.
may I ask how much a garage would charge to do this steering column job, The Mercedes dealer here wants $1500. Seems too high to me. The part is not that expensive.
Don't go to Mercedes-Benz to get it replaced! I'm having the same problem on my Mercedes-Benz GLK 350, and I have a tech in California that's going to send me an emulator to replace the steering wheel lock, which will cost me $265. I will have my mobile mechanic technician install it for $300, and I had contacted Mercedes-Benz, and they wanted $2000 for parts and labor.
Your working key is a BE key. I know that because it has the red triangle at the front. (Original keys don't have them). You could have read the password from the key instead of going through the procedure calculating it.
Question friend I put an emulator on my car for the esl Everything is good now except that the buttons in the steering wheels are not working The yellow plug doesn't have anything to be connected with now What can I do???
I can remove the steering lock module and replace the motor inside of it. At customers request can zip Tie lock to side of column so no future lock outs and easy access to replace the burnt motor inside the steering lock. Motor costs 10$ on eBay and I can get the lock out in locked or unlocked position within 5minutes
Hey so my 04 c230 the key is good but when i put into ignition there's no electronic sound locksmith came and saud the eis data was lost what can. I do

No moving parts so a good one will outlast the car. I am in the UK and do four to six of these a month. Whole job from start to finish (including removing the failed esl) takes around two hours. I buy tge emulators direct from China .. $25 US per car.
It will but i think you have to have a blank key to get the key password. You dont have to program the key but need the blank one while obtaining password.
Or you can just replace the motor in the ESL module for £4 and need no laptop or software. I'm a C-DT for AMG Mercedes and done 100's of these. Takes 1 hour and £4 of parts.
