Top man, had the same issue on my w204 C220 in 2011 got repaired by Mercedes cost £4000 car was 3 years old, now in 2021 same issue started again leaving me stranded in a cemetery. Managed to get it going again and realised it had something to do with me taking my key out. So I kept the key in at all times taking all the right precautions.. NOT ADVISED but it helped..I did this for 2 YEARS keeping it in my garage and didn't tell a soul not even my family. I did take it out for the odd run now and then but very cautious at all time when leaving it alone. I was quoted £950 to fix by a friend at a local Mercedes-Benz specialist. I considered it till I saw your TH-cam video. I kept putting it off then shown a local garage the video two weeks ago he said he can do the job for £600. I finally plucked up the courage to have a go myself after watching it one more time and also replacing the little motor in the ESL for £7. Wasn't easy but wasn't too hard I enjoyed the challenge. Job done car up and running no issues what so ever. Total cost £53.49 for tools and esl motor. Massive thanks to this guy couldn't of done it without you bruv. Respect 👍

Hey, do you have a link for the motor, did you buy the screwdriver things for the pins? I got quoted £700 from mercedes dealer, shocked they charged you £4k!
That’s so weird? I had the same problem Mercedes only charged about $870. Wow, 4k was what they told me if I needed the knocking fix in the engine.
£4k !!! - that is outrageous , even for a Merc dealer. Mine is still functional at 128k miles but i am anticipating replacing it before it fails and my local Merc Indy quoted me £430 to replace as original
A brilliant video that provides 2 important lessons. The lock is reachable without dismantling the entire dash and the lock most probably has not totally failed so a light tap will probably give you another chance to get it to unlock. Well done. For those not wanting to use an emulator, remember that the lock motor can be replaced at minimum effort and cost.

Found a person to make the emulator and then changed it myself, I had a bit of luck the ESL failed in the unlock position took me a while to manage it but id did. Thank You so much your video saved me a ton of hassle a fair bit of money 👍👍👍.You rock man!
I want to give you a huge thanks for this video, without it it would take me longer to detect the issue of what was wrong with my car which was the ESL. The electric motor in the ESL was completely burned and luckily for me it was in the open position but it came alive couple of times when I tapped it. I replaced the electric motor inside the ESL which cost me 17$. Imagine what you can do with good tools and amount of patience and stubbornness. With it, you can achieve anything, and of course help from wonderful people on internet. Thanks again

What is the black thing you plug in at the last on the video? Is it replace for the ESL and never unlock again?
That is the emulator that gets replaced instead of the electronic steering lock.

Had this happen to my E350 2 days ago, I undid the steering column adjuster pull wheel in out up down a few times and got it working again, how long it lasts who knows. What I will say is I had loads of fault codes I had to clear, this probably can also be done by disconnecting battery for 15 mins.. hope this helps someone like this video does 👍
Basically what you did there was sort of tap the ESL to get it to work until it stops again.That is not a permanent fix but only temporary. Suggest you replace it now before it fails in the lock position.

Is it possible that im having ESL problem? The steering wheel is unlocked, but i can’t start the engine, and i can’t hear anything when im putting the key (thats why i thinks it’s faulty). But in your video you showed that when you unlocked ESL you could turn the engine on. So right now im confused if it could be ESL problem on my Benz or im having other issue

Hey I have a question what about if no sound or dash lights pop up once you insert the key could still be the ESL?
Cus I’m having same issue car won’t start I even check my starter but is good. A month or 2 bk car didn’t want start I had a dangle left ,right the steering wheel and the car started this happen 2-3 times in morning , also no dash lights or sound had come up when car didn’t want start.
Yes they also fail completely without any sound. The fact you hit the wheel left and right , that causes the steering wheel module to get effected and hence it worked.

What a frustrating job!! I'm working on a 2008 C300. An additional piece of info is that we will have to remove a plastic tube for foot warming just above the throttle pedal in order to gain access above the column. It is connected with a Torx screw one size bigger than those holding the knee cover.
Thanks to this wonderful instruction, I have been able to get to and unplug the esl but after over an hour of messing around, I am still unable to get the thing out! I cannot depress the plunger and pull from the top of the device at the same time as it's so cramped in there (and I'm old and have large hands, LOL). I'm trying to figure out your body position that enables you to get in there the way you do. I'm pretty irritated with this thing now...not sure what to try next.
Is there anyway to have an emulator programmed without sending the failed one in and have it ready just encase the module fails while on a trip ?
My c220 w204 has never made the ding sound when I put the key, but it started just fine until last week. Maybe its just that the c220 is different?
Sometimes it unlocks and wont crank the engine, nothing happens when I turn all the way clockwise. Any ideas what might be wrong. When we had -10c for a week it never started. Now ita 8c and it starts after playing around for a while. Once started and driven a little its fairly reliable for the rest of the day.

Hi there. After the ESL are disconnected, can the key be removed from the EIS for the duration of the repairs on the ESl.......Mercedes c200 kompresser, 2007 model......thanks for the video

I have a 2012 C300 and I’m having this issue. I removed the ESL and replaced the motor in it and still no luck. Still says remove key but no instrument cluster lights or anything. The car locks and unlocks with key fob.

Its not always the motor that fails , best to get an emulator or replace the ESL.

Hello, great vid, I think this is my issue.
1. I have a 2017 Metris, they call it the “Metris Class” but all the Mercedes stuff seems to have a “W” then a 123# etc.
2. I can’t find a W # for my Metris, like if I wanted to order the actuator, I’m 50/50 liking the plug and pray option.
Tried eBay but I just don’t know what W to order.
3. You mentioned it’s easier or faster with key and starter, can you do a universal program for the ESL for my Metris?

wow this is an excellent video..on a C250 the fob will open and close doors but steering is LOCKED..So car wont start 2012.. can u just relay (starter) as some youtube video show turn key to sec position remove 7.5 fuse and start the car like that ? Ive seen several videos on here with people doing that in the fuse box under hood thety jump the starter relay after removing 7.5 fuse for a few mins then car starts???
Where are you located. I just purchased a 2016 CLA250 from Copart auction and there is no key that comes with it. I need the a key or bypass the module because dealership is going to charge a lot of money for the key

Will need the key and ignition switch. It can be done without the key but faster if available.
@@MuLife so when the ESL goes bad and I put my key in the key does not turn and the red light on the key flashes while the key is in the egnition. Is that the problem because I notice earlier on before the key quit turning it would sometimes turn and then sometimes it wouldn't now it does not work at all whats your oppion? So note when I put the key in and turn i notice that the the instead of the key flashing red it would aluminate green then start but when it don't want to turn and it stays in lock position the key flashes red

@@MindingmyBizzness it needed a new key which was $577 but thank God it wasn't nothing else. The last key would work occasionally and then it wouldn't start the car at all but the door locks trunk release work but after a while none of that worked. I checked the signal at an auto parts store and it said that the key was fine I changed the battery but it STI wouldnt start the car so i paid the money and it fired right up no more issues at all it runs like a dream. Thanks for being wing to help i do appreciate that.

I've added a key to E500 after successfully programmed spear EIS locked no sound of ELV turned out to be the f EIS.
Fixed by next locksmith.

If the ignition turns on ( have lights on cluster ) then it is not ESL

I have a similar problem. Is not the same every day. Sometimes unlocks steering, sometimes not. with steering unlocked it sometimes cranks the engine and sometimes not.

Its really to reset fail lock counter? Iam replace dc motor, but many try to switch ignition with dead dc motor and elv gone lock...
would replacing the motor in the esl work to fix? my car failed in the unlock position

Could I simply cut off the locking protrusion tooth from the esl from the box so it will not engage the steering to lock it?
It would be actually going to the lock position but unable to lock up the steering.
Therefore not actually replace it with an emulator saving the cost of the replacement emulator and reprogrammed key fob? Or is this esl box tied to the electronics that requires some signal still preventing the start situation even with the lock tooth removed?
Seems the emulator sanario is the easy way out if the steering is unlocked.
@@TheTruth-dy8ze That metal lock is not the reasson that the car starts but the board and the motor inside the ESL, in other words, if you cut the metal lock but the motor doesn't work it can't activate the 2 little buttos on the board to grant the access the engine starts. What you will prevent by cutting the metal lock is only to make sure that if either the motor or board fails again in future the wheel will be unlocked so it is gonna be easy to extraxt the ESL module again.

No, even if you cut the tongue off, the lockout inside will still prevent the ESL from being removed from the column. You could possibly repair the ESL and not re-fit it to the steering column which makes it easily accessible if it failed again.

1. 6 months ago when it first have this problem. When I turn the key or use my push start button, no sounds what so ever, but dash cluster lights comes on.
Mechanic say it’s my EIS cost $1750 to replace. I never fixed it, because car starts and runs intermittently. It starts after a while when it stall.
2. Now, when it happens, no sounds, and no dash light clusters at all! But car still starts ups after a while, and check engine light disappeared.
What do you think? Is is my ESL only or both ESL and EIS. Can you give me some suggestions?
Hard to tell but most likely EIS was your issue at the beginning , but now it could be a combination.

I had no lights on my C300 - 2011 . Got a guy charging $350 to re program the ESL and $200 to install it back. Now the lights are On In Cluster
but car not starting, he is saying - The Starter motor is gone... ? Can that be true ?? because I drove it quiet a few times with relay by-pass method

Great video. Even a layman can understand how this ESL works on this C300. My C300 has this problem and the MB dealer wants $ 2750 to replace it. He says it is custom programmed for each vehicle and has be sent to MB to get a new one. I do not know if he is right or wrong. My question is who can install an emulator to bypass the steering lock?

WhAt if you can hear the suction of the key and have power but no crank ?.?. I have that issue in my c300 2010 today.. I put the key it makes the noise like the key is inside. But when I turn it nothing everything has power. But ignition doesn’t start and I can’t even put it in neutral
I would start by checking the fuses. If all good get your EIS checked.
If I wanted to send in my EIS, does it need to be the old one that I took off with the original key or could it be from a donor car with my original key? Thanks.

Hello, I was just in a flash flood 3 weeks ago. Water did enter my intake but I can still turn engine by hand and all water was removed from engine and nothing entered cylinder area from what I can tell. I have replaced all can bus boards and replaced starter and still no crank no start and now have a parasitic drain in my battery any advice? This has caused me to loose my apartment as I am a Uber driver and can't work without my car please help any advice will help!
I have a friend who has a 2011 c300 that did the and stranded him in town. After he towed it to a shop . After trying to get the steering wheel to unlock which he did apparently it now has a fuse nuber 24 blowing in front sam unit no com ect . You ever seen this happen before thanks

Very informative video! I have a problem with removing the ESL, the steering is not in a lock position but the bolt is not moving, do you know what may be the problem? If I change the motor in ESL, do the ESL needs to be Re-programed sync with the Key?
The bolt is a 13MM , then you can depress the stud and remove it from the slot. No need to reprogram anything if you are replacing the motor only
Just had this happen to me only way to fix was emulator I had to cut top of old esl and take the inners out to remove the bolt reprogrammed ESI and works good no other way of removing the bolt I could find

Great Video! I recently had my wheels locked, had to give the steering wheel a pretty good jiggle to unlock the wheels. After that I completely lost that mechanical sound when I insert my key. Car still starts up, no problems. just lost the sound... is this still a ESL problem? and will my car eventually not start?

ok. So at about 10 minutes you put the key in and take out the ESL. But you disconnect the ESL from the car *while the key is in and there is power to the car*? Is that right? Don't you risk getting an airbag error by messing with the electrics with the battery connected? Shouldn't you 1) unbolt the ESL while it's disengaged from the steering column then 2) disconnect the battery and *only then* 3) disconnect the ESL? Good video, BTW. Thank you.
