    I normally take a paper towel and grab the tip of the oil stick with the paper towel and twist it. This will remove that layer and is less messy. Ive never used a brush with oil sticks. I mainly use them when I do a mixed media painting and I love the texture they provide. I sometime lay down paint with the oil stick and use a palette knife to scrape and mix on the paper.

    I'm definitely a crafter rather than an artist and I love the paintstiks.
    I've never had a problem removing the film from the top, except when the room is cold. I just use a paper towel for friction, pinch the top of the paintstik between thumb and index finger and twist. I end up with a neat little cup of dried paintstik without shards or mess of any sort. If the room is cold, I have accidentally twisted the whole end of the paintstik off but, again, it came off in one piece rather than in shards. My trick for cold paintstiks due to cool ambient temps is to hold the end of the paintstik in my hand for a minute or so to warm it up and that allows the film cup to slide right off.
    I use them mostly on fabric that goes into garments and I usually stencil with them. I do use the very stiff stencil brushes with them and find that they are incredibly blendable--stencilling does generally rely on very, very thin layers. Since stencilling is a dry brush technique, the paintstiks are excellent as it would take real effort to pick up too much paint on the brush. The garments I've made with paintstik embellishments have held up well but I use them on garments that are not washed often. I haven't tried anything like a T-shirt but I have used them on a couple jackets and tunics that have gone through the washer and dryer many times without any degradation of the embellishments.
    I have used them as over-sized crayons on fabric and they worked well but my drawing skills do them no justice.

  • @gingerblue
    @gingerblue 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    They are excellent if you want to get into oil painting but don't want to deal with solvents. I just use them like oil pastels- I apply directly to canvas/gesso primed surface and dip a scrubber brush into Gamsol and blend right on canvas. You can get beautiful glazes. At the end of the painting I just swish out my brush and that's that. They are like giant, super creamy, super opaque oil pastels.

Especially if you want that type of application to your artwork. Saves time and frustration on work on your artpiece. So very good to know when using a paint product.

    I found the concept also really intriguing and bought some months ago some oil sticks (even though I rarely use oil since I work in our living room). They were a little bit weird in the beginning but so much fun to use. But I got the high quality ones from Sennelier and they are buttery, slide over the surface and create the described film that is easily removable (but somehow I also think it is a waste of paint since the forming film is thick). A real difference is the drying time. The oil sticks from Sennelier take like oil paints some time to dry not only 24 hours. The reason for me to use them would simply be the joy of being able to paint broad gestures (and as I wrote, they have the wonderful texture!). :)

    • @ciannacoleman5125
      @ciannacoleman5125 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only art quilters would want to use these, you have to prep the surface because the oil will eat away at the fabric. I’m not sure ironing would work as a fixative since they have to dry like oil paints do.

    As a student many years ago the technique presented to us was to use these as a crayon over top of an underpainting - in my case an acrylic painting. I used it to add a linear element to the painting. It could also be used as a resist if you are using primarily acrylic paints but I haven't played with that at all. The sticks didn't make too much of an impression on me as the thickness of the line was pretty uniform. I experienced similar problems with flaking of the cap if I didn't use a paper towel to remove it. I lost my oil sticks in a tub/box when moving at one point and they have just surfaced again. My interests have changed to quilting these days, but I may try to see if the sticks are still good and see how they will work on fabric in an art quilt format.

    Love what you painted with the oil sticks. I have a few from Sennelier and Langridge brands and they are amazing to use but I only use them as accents to my nearly finished pieces, the outer skins are awful! I probably wouldn’t do a whole painting with them, I think oil paints are a fabulous medium. Would love to see you do more.

    I really appreciate your honesty in appraising these paint sticks. I had just tried them and had a similar experience with them, with the little pieces of film getting everywhere and the fact that I didn’t find them at all “buttery” as I expected them to be. I thought maybe there might be an expiration date on them (which I couldn’t find on the packaging), and they were a lot harder than I expected. I tried to blend them with my finger, but it was pretty rough on my finger and not easy to blend. IThey we’re also difficult to use with a brush because of the hardness of their consistency. I came to the conclusion that I would need to use Gamsol or another oil medium to make them have the buttery consistency I was hoping for. And so I thought it would just be easier to use regular tubes of paint. I had hoped the sticks would be good for travel, but the messiness and hardness of them eliminated that possibility. The colors are appealing as is the concept, but so far I am not thrilled with them. I was looking for videos to see what other artists were experiencing with them, and your video confirmed that I’m not the only one who has had issues with them. Many thanks for your super helpful feedback!

    I am commenting as Jeff's wife. I am an expert on oil sticks. The whole great thing about them is you don't use brushes. You draw with them instead. Then you get thick strokes. Wipe the tips with a rag to contain the pieces of wax. Also, you are using the cheapest brand. Try Sennelier, R & F, Windsor Newton, or Kama. Way better and buttery too!

    • @muskndusk
      @muskndusk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ali Yu It's either all in your mind or my comment may be slightly defensive of acrylics. I've recently read so many comments by oil paint users attacking acrylic so may possibly be sensitive about the subject. However, it's true that a long time ago I bought a set of oil paints and found them so frustrating to use; laying one colour on top of another was like stirring jam into rice pudding! Soon after this a tutor at an art class I attended suggested acrylics (because watercolours didn't suit my prefered subject: cats). I bought a set and would never use oils again, although I do use oil pastels for convenience.
      I hope this explains my tone and any underlying ire you may have detected.

      I use these for airbrushing fish mounts in taxidermy. I use them for scale tipping and smudging above acrylic base coats on cheek areas and airbrushing translucent and shimmer paints on top. They give a superb depth effect. They play well with acrylics. I’ve also started using them for the same effects in fishing lure painting. The high pigmentation adds a great effect for me.

    Yes please! I've used oils before, and did my GCSE art exam piece in oil. But I've been using watercolour and acrylic for the last 12 years, and had no clue what to do when I went back to oils this year. I tried to use the same techniques that I used to use, but I'm now really confused cos nothing seems to be working. So any help would be great.

    I want to try oil paints but I am concerned about all the unsafe chemicals involved with using oil paints.

      HaleyBrooke'sArt You can try water based oil paint. You use water instead of any chemical, and It doesn’t smell so strong. Wisnor and newton’s 5 pack was like $20

      I actually don't use chemicals when I paint with oils. I just wipe off my brush really well between colors and I was my brushes with soap and water when I'm done. Oil paints do have a smell to them so I'd use them in well ventilated area. I normally just open my window.

    On the film note if you have a scratch pad all you have to do is push a little harder and just roll it and it will all come off pretty easily and mess free

    Was thinking that they would be good for really long lines of drawing without having to reload a brush, but the line quality I find unattractive and hard to control compared to a brush. I may buy just one and try some drawing with it, but not a game-changer as far as I can see.

    I purchased some watersoluble oil paints. I know that it is best if you use soap and water for clean up ONLY and use mediums for mixing and thinning and even faster drying times. I would love to see you use these paints. I would even be willing to send you some of my duplicates to keep your investment in the project minimal. I know you can mix the watersoluble oils with regular oils but to much and the ease of cleanup goes away! I hope you consider working with this evolving medium! Good Luck and have a wonderful week-end!
