Hi Everyone, as per my recent discovery of Shiva oil sticks I have really enjoyed playing with them in my Mixed Media pieces, however they are not that easy to get hold of, at least here in UK! So I decided to try out the more available Sennelier oil sticks, and see if both are comparable. Since the video was filmed I actually bought few more colours of the Sennelier oil sticks after seeing their beautiful satin finish post drying time!! :)

Recommend wearing gloves - and could use a pallet knife to remove film. They are oil paints remember :)
You might also like finger cots. Gloves suffocate my hands.
Shiva sticks dry out a lot quicker in the stick form while Senneliers stay pliable for years. In Australia the Shivas are way cheaper than senneliers. I've been using both these brands for a long time and the the senneliers are more blendable and buttery than the shivas. You don't need to peel the film right down on the senneliers as far as you did at all. Overall the senneliers are a way higher quality than the shivas.
You don’t need to throw away the cardboard tube, just push up the stick after loosening the cardboard.
With a little bit of olive oil you can easily remover the Paint from your fingers 😉
All oil paints will be messy if you use your fingers. Oil paints are staining unless you use linseed oil or something similar since it will repel water. These are not crayons or pastels, it’s literally a stick of oil paint, so you should treat them as such.
The Shiva oil sticks was off with just water, with Sennelier it needs a good scrub even with soap. But I am learning to love them too now, after seeing the beautiful satin finish they dry to, ordered few more colours! 🤪
Thanks for the review. I was looking at the Shiva and I think I'll get it.
I am awaiting the Shiva oil sticks based on your recommendation. I am so excited!
What did you think?
@@sicafineart I love them! They are a very different medium for me, and quite smelly, but I am using them 💜
Thanks for sharing. Ill have to pick up a few.
When I first saw you use them I fell in love with the colors and texture. I was really surprised the price of the shiva paint sticks. I thought they would end up being a lot more money. I have added them to my wish list !
I wanted to add on Amazon for us in the states I found a pack of 6 to be around $25 which is a little more then $4 a stick. However buying them individually they were more expensive but the color stories of the sets are amazing.
These look lovely and I'm glad you're enjoying them! I think they are too messy for me and I'm way too impatient and messy for oils of any kind...
could we dray the pastel color completely, so that it becomes like acrylic (for example) ?! Thanks in advance 😊🙏
Try opening the Senneliers from the other end and gloves are very helpful.
you might prefer Sennelier oil pastels which are divine
They are beautiful, I just actually bought two more colours. I love their colour variety but prefer the drying ability of the oil sticks! I filmed this video before seeing their drying finish, which is beautiful and also since found a way of taking that film off without getting fingers that dirty!! 😁 And also btw I realised the smell came from that Turquoise colour, the others don’t smell as strong and I keep them in a Costa paper cup on my desk now. :)
They certainly are, but they never fully dry and will rub off so have to go under glass, don't they?
Hmm... the Sennelier ones look like a mess. Once again you save me time, including time spent on doing extra rounds of laundry to get the Sennelier smudges out. :-) Thank you!
I am glad you find this demo helpful, but this was a while ago and more of a first impression. Since then I have to say I fell in love with Sennelier oil sticks and they have become one of my frequently used art supplies. The colours are stunning and the creamy textures blend beautifully. 🧡
Do all the shiva colors dry matte? Do all the sennelier colors dry gloss?
The colours that I have in Shiva do all dry matte, they also dry faster perhaps because of that.
In terms of Sennelier, again all of those that I have dry glossy as they are more oily and creamy. Some colours are even more glossy than others!
Thank you. Maybe a little more advance preparation would make this a little more fluent.
How fast do the shiva oils dry?
About a day. But they dry completely matte.
Very unaffordable, unfortunately. I'll never know what they do or don't do. Maybe I'll save up and get one black one. MAYBE.
I looked for the Sennelier on Blick ... 30 dollars for one stick?!?! Ridiculous!
Oh no no! That’s way too much! We get them here in UK for roughly £5 which is about $6-7. 🧡
You were looking at the 96ml sticks which must be massive, those range from $30 to over $50 depending on the color. The sticks in this video are 38ml and currently range from $8.00 to $13.00 depending on color (from Blick).
While I very much appreciated the exploration of this media, your constant worry about your nails really turned me off! If you're going to be an artist and make art, you HAVE TO accept being dirty. If not, then you're in it for the wrong reasons...you might say it's because I'm not a lady, but my lady art friends don't complain about washing their hands or the smell of linseed oil.
These are oil paints with toxic metals that can leach into your skin/bloodstream. Pls be careful. These are not pastels. I love these and use them in my mixed media paintings all the time.❤️
Do you use them with gloves or other tools when you need to blend?
+ these days I tend to just blend them with the stick itself, no skin contact. Or I love using silicone tools for a spread and drag. 🧡
@@AlyonasWatercolourCreationsyes use gloves, silicone tools are great too! or palette knife, etc
Too much fussing with opening the plastic and your nails! Give me a break! Maybe try them out before you make a video.
This was a "First impression" video, if she tried them out before it wouldn't be a true first impression. Peeling the plastic was part of the first impression, I for one was glad she included it, I now know it will be a thing I get to look forward to 😖 (since I have zero nails being a potter)....but at least the stick is fresh. 👍🏻
The rest of the video was good IMO.
THANK YOU! I'm surprised more people haven't said that. When she started talking about being messy and wanting perfect nails I thought, "I don't think she know what being an artist means"
Use gloves.
