- I tested oil paint sticks, and it might be the most satisfying art supply I've tried in a LONG time. Is it like an oil pastel? Kind of, but no. Is it like a crayon? Not really. Oil paint? Just watch the video to find out! These are AWESOME!

It was a real pleasure seeing what you did with these, Mira! Interestingly, oil paint sticks started as an industrial product (for all-weather marking on wood, stone, and metal), adopted by 20th c. artists for broad, expressive drawing and painting applications. The very first artist's oil paint sticks were made to specifications for an art materials brand by the same company that made industrial oil paint marking crayons, and the product category has expanded ever since! Conservation efforts are underway to determine which colors and what brands were used by Basquiat, so there is new research being done right now ! Since they are based on a drying oil, oil paint sticks do cure to a durable finish that can be varnished, unlike oil pastels which are made using non-drying oils. Me too. Mira told me she probably won't make video like that though, because she really doesn't like oil pastels.
I'm not Mira, but I do regularly use both oil pastels and oil sticks. To me, they're fairly different from one another. Think of an oil stick as really thick oil paint. It dries like oil paint, while oil pastel never dries. From what I understand, different oils are used in the production of pastels. I think oil sticks have a much smoother consistency than most oil pastels (although I've never tried Sennelier, they might be comparable). Anything you can do with oil paint, you can do with oil sticks. Although, without a brush or palette knife, you can't necessarily get too detailed. If you wanted to pair oil sticks with oil pastels, it'd be best to use oil sticks as your first layer, allow it to dry, and then apply the pastels on top. Oil sticks are pretty expensive, which is a bummer, but there are several videos here on TH-cam that teach you how to make oil sticks using oil paint and white beeswax. Another thing to know about oil sticks is that they do dry between uses, so you'll often have to peel the dried outer layer off the sticks before you use them. On one hand, it can seem wasteful, but on the other hand, they're a little less messy, and you only have to peel off a small area to access the wet paint and draw with it. Hopefully that all makes sense.
Oil stick brands: R&F are super expensive, Sennelier are a little less, but I think the Jack Richeson Shiva pro oil sticks are great, and they're more affordable. (But not the florescent colors, those are terrible.) Also, there's a guy named Paul deMarrais who hand makes his own and sells them on his website, at around $5-6/ stick, but his full set of 35 colors barely costs more than the R&F set of 12. (I haven't tried his yet, but I've heard good things.)

I didn’t have high hopes for these sticks but I’m completely blown away! 😮 the result is amazing and it seems like a way to use oil paint/pastels without a lot of the hassle that comes with those mediums

I don't do oil paintings because they're not as easy to use as acrylics, but these sticks seem interesting. Would love to see you use them more often :)
I’m the exact opposite, I think oil is so much easier to use than acrylic. It’s so forgiving and you can get so much texture and depth in there. I’m always amazed by people who work so well with acrylic though because I really suck at it 😅
@@elisabethherzog9369 for me it's the cleaning that makes acrylics more attractive. I can clean my brushes with just water, doesn't work with oil paints 😅 but then again my favourite medium is watercolours. Maybe I'm just a lazy hobby artists 😂

I think it was Oscar de la renta that did a line of cerulean gowns and then it was yves saint laurent that showed cerulean military jackets..(I think we need a jacket here” 😂😂
Your paint blotter is such a great idea. Currently I just use the napkins that come with our food deliveries because in Canada they always seem to give you WAY more than you need.
Is the paint blotter a crochet rag? It’s hard for me to really see😀

These look like a larger version of an oil pastel but they are so much smoother. I wonder how well they blend and how long they take to dry. So fun. I'll maybe have to try them sometime.

They’re so tactile, I like oil pastels and haven’t tried these cos I have to wear a mask with oil paint but they look so good. The directness of holding them and using them straight onto the surface is such a simple pleasure, and they’re so versatile.

I just dipped my toes into oil painting and bought a few of these to play with. I love what you did!
I see the algorithm is on fine form today. I used these about 20 years ago for my art exams and recently used up the last remnants (yes they were still good 20 years later) and was searching on Amazon for more last week and then boom! This video shows in my feed from an artist I’ve never watched before.

This looks so fun, I really didn't understand how an oil stick would differ from an oil pastel but I cannot imagine an oil pastel being this smooth and easy to blend
These sticks also dry while oil pastels never do. Oil pastels stay soft forever. Layers can be achieved with oil paint sticks by waiting for the previous layer to solidify. With oil pastels, you cannot achieve layers. They use two different types of oils as their bases, which is why one dries and the other doesn’t. Idk if you really needed this information lmao but here it is
Oil Pastels use mineral oils as a binder and don't dry. However, there is a spray and a brush on varnish you can apply to add a layer of protection.
You gotta do more of these! Also, I would totally buy several knitted paintbrush cleaners if you make them to sell! :)

The thing I love about these sticks is they are less messy and for me the sticks I use are only 6.45 Euro and you can use every bit of it, I have more of these now that I had my oil tubes. really love them also fine they dry much faster than the tubes. Enjoy xxx Dede

I have been looking at these oil paint sticks and because of the cost I would just pass them by. But after your testing I am so going to get some of these. They seemed to go on so smooth and buttery unlike oils pastels.

sooo fitting! I bought some about 4 weeks ago and i have been afraid to open them because they are sooo pricey and if I hate them I will be sad lol, this gives me hope!!! Ok! I will dive in 😊
So glad you liked them. It was nice to see how you used them. I love them too, but I never thought of using a brush with them. I use a glove and just blend them with my fingers.

They are great to use for stenciling on cup towels.
Hey Mira, if you haven't tried them before I'd recommend giving Caran D'Ache "Neocolor ii's, a go, they're a similar vibe to these in that they're generally super smooth and creamy to work with, and they're also water soluble, so you can use them like a crayon or like a paint or both, but they're 'wax pastels' rather than oil paint based. They're nice and vibrant, and fun to work with! :)

Thanks for doing this video. I’ve had oil sticks for a few years now, having no idea of what to do with them. So I find your example extremely helpful and would enjoy more examples. How do you clean the oil out of the paint brushes? Also, once the painting is dry do varnish it? If so with what product?

What do you do with the part that you have to cut or peel off? Can it be blended with an encaustic medium to reuse it?
The paint sticks from Markal and Art Primo are much cheaper like $4 each where’s the ones from R&F are around $15-$18 at most places. R&F paint sticks are definitely better quality and have a wider range of colors but if you’re looking for paint sticks without having to drop half a paycheck on them I’d recommend either Markal or Art Primo. Btw paint sticks go great with acrylic and watercolor pieces as well it doesn’t have to all be oil paint
I've never toned a canvas before (I prefer acrylic over oil).
How do you decide which coloir to use? 🤔
I really enjoyed watching you have so much fun. I look forward to seeing which colours you get next and what you do with them. 😊
If I want warmth to show thru, I use a warmer color to tone the canvas. If I want the painting to be colder, I use a colder color. If I want the colors to be more bright, I use a saturated, vibrant color. I just keep in mind it will show thru in the final painting due to my stylistic choices, so I have to think ahead to make it work for the final piece.
