I found out the hard way that while you can be frugal when buying your first supplies, there is a limit to how cheap you can go. I bought my first oil paints and brushes just last week at W.M. The $5 set of oil paints and the cheap artists brush sets can do more harm than good for beginners like myself. I almost gave up on painting when none of the techniques that I saw in the many YT videos I watched would work for me and my brushes started falling apart after just one use (I discovered that the glue holding them together dissolves in mineral spirits.) As soon as I bought some of the "cheap" paints similar to the ones suggested in this vid, the techniques that I couldn't get to work before suddenly worked beautifully. I rebuilt the brushes and now have usable paint so the hobby I started to try to lower my stress levels is no longer stressing me out and I am making successful first steps in this new journey.
I am glad to hear that you found supplies that are starting to work for ya. The old saying is right, "You get what you pay for" If you need any more budget friendly recommendations, I made this video not to long ago.... I hope it helps Link: th-cam.com/video/6FZJGO_wA_k/w-d-xo.html Happy Painting
After watching youtube videos of Bob painting for the last 3 years I'm finally headed to FL for a week-long class. I have always liked artsy stuff, even considered it as a career in school before deciding to beat nails with a hammer. aka Carpenter. For a short while, I changed careers and owned a T-Shirt shop and I did all the graphics. I do 3-d modeling/plans for my business now. So it's time to try my hand at painting. Because I'm a carpenter and very creative thinking outside the box I'm already looking at making some of what I will need like an easel, palette knives, and palettes ( I have been saving the plexiglass scraps from some of our builds). I've used natural bristle brushes for construction using latex paint so somewhat familiar. As I get closer to "retirement" I'm building the wood shop I always wanted and hopefully, painting will be one of many things I take up. Time will tell. PS- When it comes to tools I always opted for the best I could get. They work better and last longer so I'll carry that thru.
I am glad to hear that you have the creative itch.... Not to self promote BUT I think my channel will really help you out on your painting journey. So feel free to subscribe. The nice thing about your carpenter skills, is the fact that you can shape your on mixing palette, build your canvas frames for stretching, and construct floating frames for your finished paintings. I just discovered the Mona Lisa is painted on wood! When I was in the 8th grade I worked for a company that painted for furniture stores. We used Masonite and painted on the back side after using a purple layers of gesso. An 8’ by 4’ piece sells for about $12.00. I checked this idea out on an AI app and it recommended painting on the smooth side.

I'm not really an artist, I do sporadic projects that may or may not require paint (more of a cosplayer, lol.) One of the projects I want to do came to me after I bought a package of wooden slices (I wanted just a couple for coasters, but I found out coasters are ridiculously expensive.) I had thought about it and realized one of the things I always wanted to do for my dad (who ADORES Bob Ross) is to 1) let him take an official class from a CRI, and 2) replicate a painting for him. But, I'm a college student that's down on her luck trying to find work, so budget is crucial to me. This video really helped to put my mind at ease and covers all the bases for the lingering questions I had. I appreciate when content creators are willing to create budget-friendly videos, because it feels like they're keeping people like me in mind, who don't have a whole lot of income or an influencer's bank account. Thanks so much!
I am glad that I can help you and your dad. If you are thinking of getting him a BR gift take a look at this video ( th-cam.com/video/uq6UR_jc138/w-d-xo.html ) a ton of great suggestions and different price points. Also if you wanna make coasters. A cheap and affective solution is to buy either Small white square tiles at a hardware shop ( about a $1 ) or Circular wood disks at an art store ( also about $1 ) you can easily paint on these. If you seal them or put a protective coating on them make easy and awesome coasters... You are welcome :)
I began painting the Bob Ross wet on wet , and used only Ross or Windsor newton..however I began painting with acrylics, which takes a little getting used to , but I prefer acrylics now. I have ,however , NEVER had good experiences with Artist loft products, except for their brushes. I use mostly GOLDEN products now..which I have found to be superior. I recently got a set of the water mixable oils, so I will be venturing back to oils again soon

I’ve been painting with acrylic for about two years. I’m going to try oil paint soon. Thanks for the tips. I just wanted to point out that Jerry’s Artarama usually has great deals on bulk canvases. Artist loft have packs of oil paint (though only 12ml each). They are about 5 per 12 tubes and 8 for 24 colors. I'd say you get 3-6 paintings out of them.
They are a tad soft for new wet on wet painters but not a bad budget friendly option. Funny thing is I just bought their new bundle set to see if the new version would be a good cheap alt for painters.... I will find out soon 😜
@@WildCreates I have never done oil painting and only watercolor and I wanted to follow a Bob Ross tutorial but on a budget. I may or may not get that to start out.
I've been painting for about 2 years now and have listened to your tips and appreciate them a lot; I am going top have to slightly disagree with the synthetic brush comment :) My liner is synthetic and I use a small detail round also that is synthetic. I also use a 3/4 and 1/4 flat that works really well as they are soft and allow for paint to be layered easily. Just wanted to comment about it for folks that have been at it awhile. Thanks for the tips man.
You should know that black can be made a couple of ways. Blue and brown will make a nice dark color and cadmium orange and blue will make a very close black. I rarely use black out of the tube.
Hi Wild! I've been loving your videos and advice! I have always wanted to try oils since I've watched Bob Ross in the 1970s. I purchased a Bob Ross Master paint kit and painted my first one! It's pretty primitive, but not too bad. Bust of luck to you in 2021!
Glad to hear that you are taking the plunge. Try my sunset follow-a-long painting. Its a super easy one to build confidence with your new oil kit. Good luck with your new painting afventures. th-cam.com/video/rJp5_BalJtM/w-d-xo.html
Hi Wild! I use water mixable colours. I am happy for your video where you explain how I can make my own water mixable liquid white. I wonder, do you know if can I use Liquid clear or Solvent free fluid together with my water mixable colours? / Martina from Sweden
You can use any oil medium with water mixable oil paints. BUT if those mediums are not water mixable themselves your paints will convert back to normal oil paint... requiring you to clean them up with mineral spirits like odorless thinner. Hope that helps.
Thank you for the advice! Do you have a video spelling out everything needed to clean the brushes? What do you o with the pain thinner and brush cleaner. Do you need the little metal rack inside a bucket? I am a total beginner who just got the basic supplies you mentioned, but it's not clear exactly what to do to clean brushes while painting, and when not painting. I know this is very important. Ant help would be appreciated. I'll look forward to learning from more of your videos!
At the moment, I don't have a step by step guide BUT I do have enough videos to fill in the gaps to take you there. I am just getting back to this, and have a 30 year old jar of magic white, and magic black- do you know what is best to thin them if needed? (Afraid to open them- LOL) . Thank you for all your information!
To be honest if they are sealed air tight... I bet they are still good for practicing. Give them an extremely good shake and stir with a paint stick ( make sure to scrap the bottom of the can, thats where all the pigment will sit ) I hope that helps. If you need new MW - make sure to use my links :)
Its enough to get you by if you are just starting, BUT I would recommend getting some conditioner to make your brushes last longer. The 2 products below work great: Bob Ross Conditioner: th-cam.com/video/X-aG6dfSYVI/w-d-xo.html Master C&C: th-cam.com/video/gDaoXPk-nWQ/w-d-xo.html
Thank you Wild . Awesome tips ! I do like the Windsor and Newton paint as an alternative to BR paints . I find less if any oil separation when squeezing out from the tube with Windsor and Newton . Thank you as always for keeping us informed and being an inspiration to all .
Technically YES - But once you stretch and wrap it , you will notice it will be shorter than most common frames out there. So you would have to build a custom frame for it.
@@WildCreates ahhh right do you reckon it’s cheaper than buying canvases or do think buy a cheap painted one to paint over and thanks for the fast reply
Best cheap hack is you can score frames that are sometimes worth a few $100 at thrift stores and goodwill. Buy them between $5 and $10 bucks. Spray paint them and BOOM. Awesome new frame! Building frames can be super cheap provided you ya the tools and space to build them
BR paints are not that firm by today's standards - They are still awesome but take practice to get use too. Here is a video that might help you out with a great alternative for some colors: ( th-cam.com/video/NGf-eYDqPys/w-d-xo.html )
Wild Creates yea I got some Windsor white and that made my mountain snow much better but the BR paints I have trouble getting it to come off my brush for bushes and such things but I’ve only been painting a few weeks! So I know it takes practice but I am getting good reviews from friends and family!
Repeated practice is the answer. But most newbies suffer from no using enough paint at the start when making highlights on bushes. I will see what I can do to cover this in an up coming video for ya.
Wild Creates thank you I really appreciate the help and yes I do struggle with how much paint to use since I don’t want to waste paint and I don’t have the money to just buy more paint if I waste it, I’m also in the process of deciding what brand paint to buy, I’d like to try masters touch but they are out of stock so it’s Winston or grumbacher or I heard you mention artist loft, and I’ve watched a lot of your videos about trees and mountains and I need a #3 fan brush and small knife! Love your paintings and I hope to be that good eventually!!
Wild Creates is there a way if your willing I could send you a cpl picks of my recent paintings for some constructive criticism? If not I understand but I really appreciate all your advice!
I received a Bob Ross kit for Christmas and am preparing to try my first painting within the next week. Loved this video but have one question, what type of set-up do you recommend for cleaning the brushes, drying them, etc? Never done any painting at all so I'm not sure what kind of set-up I need or even how to do the brush cleaning. Thanks
Congrats on getting your BR kit ( you are gunna have so much fun and painting rage ha ha ha ). I don't have a video only on cleaning BUT I do have a few videos that will give you well rounded-off knowledge of how to clean your brushes while you paint and after you are done. Take a look at the links attached below to get you off on the correct foot. - Beater Rack: th-cam.com/video/ssxfQv_82E0/w-d-xo.html - Recommended Cleaner: th-cam.com/video/gDaoXPk-nWQ/w-d-xo.html - Keep Colors Rich: th-cam.com/video/9ABfigTK8dU/w-d-xo.html - Clean Palette: th-cam.com/video/k1wM8_illII/w-d-xo.html
Should I buy Gamblin 1980 paints or BRI paints? I watched your video about Gamblin paints, but I still can't come to a decision. And should I get a metal or wood easel?
If you are just starting out, get what is affordable and build up from there. I would recommend starting with Winsor and Newton ( its affordable and versatile ). Take a look at my cyber monday video to see what paints are on sale at the moment ( th-cam.com/video/Yr70WZcN9pA/w-d-xo.html ). When it comes to an easel I would spend a little more money on one that is study ( material doesnt matter. CHeck out the Soho easel: geni.us/SoHoUrbanEasel
Most would go with a Synthetic Mix. But when it comes to acrylics you can do wither natural or syn. If you go with natural, you will have to make sure you clean them often.
Glad to to help. When I first started to paint on the cheap I used Chip brushes... They work but they are not the best (kinda hard to use for finer detail). If you like painting and enjoy it, I think its best to invest in some brushes (just my personal opinion though) Chip brushes are great for tasks like adding gesso or Liquid White to your canvas. I use them all the time for that.
Thanks for this video. Very informative. I'm intrigued with water mixable oils. No harmful solvents and easy clean-up sounds great. So what's the catch? Do they not perform as well as regular oils?
The only nit-pick thing is: the colors are not as rich and you have to talk extra care of your brushes. Cause the water will make the hair brittle fast if you don’t condition them.
I have a question: do I need to buy acrylic primer when I start will oil painting? Or just gesso? And does gesso prevent canvas boards from absorbing liquid white? Btw thank you for taking time from your main channel to help hobbyists like me, much appreciated
so happy to find you on you tube, as im a beginner, have just finished an oil painting, without using liquid clear, and its turned out ok, but it doesnt have that glazed effect, is it possible to put liquid clear over the finshed painting when dry ? and if so will it dry ?or will it mix up the colours etc.
Glad I can help. You can do LC on top when its all finished BUT I think you would enjoy a coat of Varnish on top more ( it will bring out the saturation and gloss of the paint)
I just started watching your videos last week. They are great and very helpful. Could I use the Bob Ross wet on wet technique (using liquid white) if I'm painting with water mixable oil paint? I want to know before I purchase my paints and the liquid white. Thanks!
Yes you can, you just have to make sure you my a water mixable LW. Which you can find here ( th-cam.com/video/c6ISb-xRCVs/w-d-xo.html ). I hope that helps and happy painting :)
I use Artisan Winsor Newton for Bob Ross Style. I have tried the natural bristle brushes by Bob Ross. First time using them they swelled up and bristles splayed on the outside. I have tried them twice now. I don't soak them and when washing them I dry them right away. I can't get natural bristle brushes to work with water mixable oil paints. Ruined after one use. Any suggestions?
This is happening because of the water when you clean. Natural brushes are just like your hair on your head. When water gets on it and air dries it will get frizzy, brittle and flare out. Learn to shape your brush when you load it with paint and this will help. Also look into getting 1 or both of these products. They will help with maintaining and shaping your brush. ( th-cam.com/video/gDaoXPk-nWQ/w-d-xo.html ) or ( th-cam.com/video/X-aG6dfSYVI/w-d-xo.html ) Hope that helps
This video below will show you exactly what you need to make a version of WN water mixable liquid white. The video is a little old but still a goodie. th-cam.com/video/c6ISb-xRCVs/w-d-xo.html Happy Painting Buddy.
Yes you can use Normal oil paint with water mixable oil paint (But you will need to clean your brushes with thinner/mineral spirits afterword Yes normal LC & LW can work with water oil paint ( but again you have to clean your brushes with thinner after)
I show you how to make 2 different versions here: Recipe #1: th-cam.com/video/c6ISb-xRCVs/w-d-xo.html Recipe #2: th-cam.com/video/TyKPBE_WBt8/w-d-xo.html Or you can buy this alt brand if you can still find it: th-cam.com/video/H1FBgPWIoCE/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps

Hi Wild, thanks for the information. I try the Bob Ross 1inch brush, the bristle go terrible everytime after I clean with paint thinner. The top of the hair not fluffy. I heard some one said that the quality of Bob Ross brushes go down recently. Do you have other brand of brushes to recommend? Such as alexander brand? Thank you
It could be that you are just not cleaning the brush thoroughly and paint and thinner is still in the bristles. I remember hear that the BR company wasn’t happy with their paint products a few years ago. Which is why they switched manufacturers. But that was just for the paints.
I have - I have 2 videos on them at the moment - Feel free to check them out: Classic: th-cam.com/video/A1qKew-w1FQ/w-d-xo.html MM Canvas: th-cam.com/video/dTJiizNOm3E/w-d-xo.html

This video is about cheaoer and more affordable alternatives for painting - If you are looking to get into wet on wet oil painting. I would recommend the BR Master Paint kit. You can see a video on it here. ( th-cam.com/video/5sNyjCcsBdI/w-d-xo.html )
@@WildCreates thanks man because I have used them for many wet on wet paintings... And I'm 12 and I want to know if I should switch to another brand... Because I have used their easle and canvases and all the other supplies that Simply Carrys.
I love artists loft paints 👍the Bob Ross line has gone horrible and I won’t support it anymore due to how they treated Steve Ross after Bob Ross died they took everything!!!!!
If you are looking for a alternative to the BRI paints, take a look at the Gamblin 1980 series. I did a review on it: th-cam.com/video/RlB_cDupJpI/w-d-xo.html
$80-120 to start is crazy... I got a set of 12 colors, a 10 pack of brushes and 5 canvases at Ross all for under $20. Then an extra $15 or so at ACE for turpentine and linseed oil.
If you are looking to struggle with splash colors and smelling intense vapors... then you got the right kit ha ha ha. I understand that $80 plus bucks is a lot. But when it comes to BR painting... there is an investment cost. Yes for under $25, I too can get a few supplies and start painting BUT that is just basic painting. If you want to paint like BR then I recommend getting decent supplies. But I will be interested in how your painting adventure goes. I hope you dominate it 💪
@Wild Creates you are right about the vapors haha... I have a small 1 bedroom apartment... I had to put the oils away until summer. I'll try again then... I am getting better with the acrylics in the mean time tho.. my job is somewhat seasonal and this is the slow time, so I have extra time, but no extra cash... so it is what it is for now.. maybe come summer I can get some better supplies for next winter when I'll have time again.
I forget which video I show this in BUT you can minimize vapors escaping by rubber-banding a towel ontop of your cleaning bucket. Pull the towel back when you need to clean then cover when done. Its stupid BUT it works. Have you ever thought about water mixable oils?
Be sure to take a look at the recommended supplies list in the video description.
It also helps the channel, so thank you.

Its a subtractive color scale - So you can make many forms of black a million different ways

@@WildCreates I was already planning to do that one! I love it! Thank you!
Heck ya buddy - Handle it
Hi Wild! I use water mixable colours. I am happy for your video where
you explain how I can make my own water mixable liquid white. I wonder,
do you know if can I use Liquid clear or Solvent free fluid together
with my water mixable colours? / Martina from Sweden
You can use any oil medium with water mixable oil paints. BUT if those mediums are not water mixable themselves your paints will convert back to normal oil paint... requiring you to clean them up with mineral spirits like odorless thinner.
Hope that helps.
Thank you for your videos!!! 🎉. Can I use for wet on wet the water mixable oil color?
You are welcome and 100% you can - Just make sure you use a liquid base that is water mixable.
@@WildCreates By liquid base do you mean magic white? Could you point me to a product?
Liquid white will work or any liquid medium. You can see all the product links in the video description of all my videos.
hope that helps
Thank you for the advice! Do you have a video spelling out everything needed to clean the brushes? What do you o with the pain thinner and brush cleaner. Do you need the little metal rack inside a bucket? I am a total beginner who just got the basic supplies you mentioned, but it's not clear exactly what to do to clean brushes while painting, and when not painting. I know this is very important. Ant help would be appreciated. I'll look forward to learning from more of your videos!
At the moment, I don't have a step by step guide BUT I do have enough videos to fill in the gaps to take you there. Look at the links below to help you out:

Are the Hobby Lobby Master's Touch oil paints good for the wet-on-wet technique?
I can't remember if I have used that brand before - Let me see what I can do to test it out in a future video :)
@@WildCreates awesome. I'm sure I'm not the only one curious.
I am just getting back to this, and have a 30 year old jar of magic white, and magic black- do you know what is best to thin them if needed? (Afraid to open them- LOL) . Thank you for all your information!
To be honest if they are sealed air tight... I bet they are still good for practicing. Give them an extremely good shake and stir with a paint stick ( make sure to scrap the bottom of the can, thats where all the pigment will sit )
I hope that helps. If you need new MW - make sure to use my links :)
@@WildCreates thanks, I used your links today to buy several supplies- and will as need in future.
I appreciate that - Using the links help a ton :)
Is odorless thinner sufficient to clean natural bristle brushes? Or do I need the conditioner and brush cleaner?
Its enough to get you by if you are just starting, BUT I would recommend getting some conditioner to make your brushes last longer. The 2 products below work great:
Bob Ross Conditioner: th-cam.com/video/X-aG6dfSYVI/w-d-xo.html

Thank you Wild . Awesome tips ! I do like the Windsor and Newton paint as an alternative to BR paints . I find less if any oil separation when squeezing out from the tube with Windsor and Newton . Thank you as always for keeping us informed and being an inspiration to all .
Always here to help you out.
Could you buy the canvas paper and make your own frame to stretch it round
Technically YES - But once you stretch and wrap it , you will notice it will be shorter than most common frames out there. So you would have to build a custom frame for it.
@@WildCreates ahhh right do you reckon it’s cheaper than buying canvases or do think buy a cheap painted one to paint over and thanks for the fast reply
Best cheap hack is you can score frames that are sometimes worth a few $100 at thrift stores and goodwill. Buy them between $5 and $10 bucks. Spray paint them and BOOM. Awesome new frame!
Building frames can be super cheap provided you ya the tools and space to build them
Thank you for the information second time I watch
Anytime buddy - I try my best to help out :)
I bought the master set and the paints spread like icing but the brushes are awesome
BR paints are not that firm by today's standards - They are still awesome but take practice to get use too.
Here is a video that might help you out with a great alternative for some colors:
( th-cam.com/video/NGf-eYDqPys/w-d-xo.html )
This is amazing. Super Helpful! Thank you so much. Keep it up!!
Glad I am able to help you out :)
Should I use a natural bristle brush if I do acrylics
Most would go with a Synthetic Mix. But when it comes to acrylics you can do wither natural or syn. If you go with natural, you will have to make sure you clean them often.
PBS has supporters sale of Bob Ross Kits, @ $12.00 a month. A lot of supplies come with it.
Oh really???
Do you have a link to it? Never heard of them before.
Bro, the hair!!! I’m a fan ❤️. Yes, you Rock at teaching oil painting too. BUT, Oh The Hair❤
He he he Thank You❤
They hair does half the work for my channel ha ha ha
Awesome man . Thanks . Another thing i've liked doing is using paint tape to form a clear border. Looks nice once taken off.
Yeah for sure - It creates a nice Frame or Matte effect 💪
Thank you for providing so much information for beginners like me! I was wondering, are chip brushes good for oil paintings?
Glad to to help.
When I first started to paint on the cheap I used Chip brushes... They work but they are not the best (kinda hard to use for finer detail). If you like painting and enjoy it, I think its best to invest in some brushes (just my personal opinion though)
Chip brushes are great for tasks like adding gesso or Liquid White to your canvas.
Cause the water will make the hair brittle fast if you don’t condition them.
what easy clean up? I use normal oil paints and wash them out of the brushes with soap and water and that works well.
i put sticky tack under my table easel and it hold it in place
Thats a smart move... Thanks for sharing.
I have a question: do I need to buy acrylic primer when I start will oil painting? Or just gesso?
And does gesso prevent canvas boards from absorbing liquid white?
Btw thank you for taking time from your main channel to help hobbyists like me, much appreciated
Just gesso will be fine and yes it will help stop the canvas from absorbing LW.
Glad to help you out :)

Thanks buddy - We will grow in time 2021 will be my year :)
so happy to find you on you tube, as im a beginner, have just finished an oil painting, without using liquid clear, and its turned out ok, but it doesnt have that glazed effect, is it possible to put liquid clear over the finshed painting when dry ? and if so will it dry ?or will it mix up the colours etc.
@@WildCreates Thanks!
Glad to help out buddy
Great, great clip!

( th-cam.com/video/gDaoXPk-nWQ/w-d-xo.html ) or ( th-cam.com/video/X-aG6dfSYVI/w-d-xo.html )
Hope that helps
What do we use to make the canvas slick when using winsor & newton water mix paint ?

@@WildCreates Thanks.
@@WildCreates Can I use regular oil paint with the water oil paint? Also will the regular magic white and clear do ok with the water oil mix paint?
Yes you can use Normal oil paint with water mixable oil paint (But you will need to clean your brushes with thinner/mineral spirits afterword
Yes normal LC & LW can work with water oil paint ( but again you have to clean your brushes with thinner after)
@@WildCreates Thanks so much bro ....Great videos

How do I get a good chisel edge on my brushes
Its not as easy as it looks ha ha ha. I should do a video on this cause its tough. But short answer is a lot of paint.
Have u ever used Master Touch from Hobby Lobby

Are you getting a kick back for recommending Bob Ross products? They're expensive.
Nope, but if you click through the affiliate links they do help my channel. I like BR products and like BOB :)
I love artists loft paints 👍the Bob Ross line has gone horrible and I won’t support it anymore due to how they treated Steve Ross after Bob Ross died they took everything!!!!!

Super helpful, thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
