    The truth is Urdu is not the mother tongue of many muhajirs as well. Like it was imposed on us Sindhis, Punjabis etc. Similarly the real Mother tongue of many Muhajirs are Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Marwari, Haryanvi, Bihari etc but they are brainwashed to believe that Urdu is their mother tongue. Now I've started to transcribe rare words in my diary to preserve them and I'm optimistic to think that my struggle will at least change the preception of my people that their languages are not backward and rustic languages but have a rich culture and history and knowledge.

    Urdu is an Indian language & is native to western Uttar Pradesh & Awadh in India.

    • @Abdullah-uv9nk

      It’s native to Delhi as it comes from Kauravi and Braj with sprinklings of Awadhi and Haryani as its base.

    • @virferind7946
      @virferind7946 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Abdullah-uv9nk Brother, the base is through Khari Boli & maybe Kaurvi too (but again Khari Boli & Kauravi are highly similar, sometimes even the same), however Braj, Awadhi & Haryanvi might have exerted influence but not formed a base of Urdu. Yeah, Delhi is also one of the native regions along with Rohilkhand & Awadh.

    • @Abdullah-uv9nk
      @Abdullah-uv9nk 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@virferind7946Well Urdu isn’t just built purely upon Khari Boli/Kauravi. Otherwise we would easily understand Kauravi. Urdu is a syncretisation of a few north Indian prakrits centred around Delhi for ease of communications between the people and the later Mughal court. So Braj and Khari Boli was mixed and a few borrowings from other local languages were amalgamated and standardised along with a significant Persian presence so the rulers could speak and understand more easily with the people.

    • @virferind7946
      @virferind7946 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Abdullah-uv9nk Yeah, its possible that Braj might have had some influence too, becoz Braj is spoken in the immediate vicinity to Dehlavi or Kauravi!
      But I'm not sure if there's any convincing evidence to prove the presence of & degree of Braj influence on Urdu. I've always perceived Braj as a language of Bhakti & Radha Krishna Literature (just a personal notion).
      See, to say influence is safe, becoz when we say "base" then that can be an overstatement esp in absence of conclusive proof! It is generally accepted that base was Kauravi or Dehlavi or Khari Boli (they're almost same) while influence can be of other dialects (Braj, Haryanvi & so on).
      Be it Braj or Kauravi-Khari Boli or both, that would still keep Urdu's origin in western Uttar Pradesh.

    • @Abdullah-uv9nk
      @Abdullah-uv9nk 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@virferind7946I never doubted Urdu as a language that originated from western UP and Delhi. And by ‘base’ I mean the grammar of Khari Boli and Braj was a combination of the two with to various degrees. Then you have the addition of some other language with a heavy presence of Persian - its defining aspect. The point is that Urdu isn’t a language belonging to a specific community i.e. you can’t say Urdu is the mother tongue of only Khari Boli speakers or even Delhiites. It’s all a mixture or Rekhta. Its purpose was simply for communication between the royal court and the commoners in India, a lingua Franca is you will.

    The formation of Urdu began as soon as the Ghaznavi forces settled in Lahore, that is in 1027. At what time they gave up Persian and took to speaking Punjabi Urdu alone, we cannot tell, probably it was a matter of a very few years. 166 years later the joint Ghori and Ghaznavi troops entered Delhi. In a short time Urdu was probably their usual language of conversation.

      It doesn't look like this is about Urdu, it seems more like some other local variant that might have formed prior to Urdu. It is possible that many contemporary local creole dialects might have come in existence all over north India & Punjab apart from the specific one that would form Urdu in later future! It is a common phenomenon that new creoles form when people of different ethnicities come in contact!
      It is a well established fact that Urdu had developed around Khari Boli dialect base of Delhi region. How would it be possible for a creole of Lahore or Multan to form Urdu as we got without exposure to Khari Boli? Can a creole without Khari Boli be considered "Urdu" in any way?? No!!
      I guess there's a serious problem with this theory that it is taking for granted that the same creole which formed out of contact in Punjab had formed Urdu in Delhi eventually! What is there to establish the link between the dialect of Punjab & basic structure of Urdu? That's the big question!
      Urdu is an Indian language, based on Khari Boli dialect, formed between Delhi & Lucknow.

The only way to hold such a nation together, then and now, is (1) create/retain a sense of perpetual insecurity and (2) rule it with an iron hand.
      Look at all dictatorships and pseudo dictatorships (past & present), including single ruled communist states and democratic authoritarianisms.

    Hey Shehzad, I'm a huge fan of your show and I've watched every episode. I appreciate your take on Urdu being imposed and the impact on regional languages like Sindhi, Balochi, and Punjabi. There’s validity in noting how these languages might have been sidelined, and I respect your perspective.
    However, I want to offer a different angle. Urdu, often perceived as a "so-called unifying language," actually plays that role for many of us in Pakistan. For example, in India, while English is becoming the fastest-growing language at the national level, Hindi faces similar criticisms to Urdu here. Yet, both languages serve to bridge diverse populations.
    Your choice to conduct your programs in Urdu is telling; it’s to reach the broadest Pakistani audience. But why not also include segments in Sindhi or other regional languages, with subtitles in Urdu or English? This approach can foster greater inclusivity. I’ve found myself drawn to Pashto podcasts with subtitles because they were intriguing and accessible.
    In today’s digital era, promoting regional languages doesn’t require diminishing Urdu's role. Instead, we can expand our linguistic repertoire to include both, preventing any one language from monopolizing communication. This could prevent English from becoming the sole medium, a trend we’ve seen in India to some extent.
    I value your insights because they spark meaningful discussions and new ideas. I hope this comment adds to our understanding and encourages more linguistic inclusivity on your platform. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to more thought-provoking content!

There are many other less documented dialects each getting influenced by their respective state languages. Urdu spoken in north Maharashtra (Malegaon) for instance has a significant influence of Marathi over its vocabulary & pronunciation! You're absolutely right when you said it moves thru linguistic boundries! Maybe its a basic character of Urdu for it has acquired words from different languages right from her inception! In regards to your claim about Punjabi origin of Urdu, I've following doubts!
      01 What about the base dialect? Khari Boli/Dehlavi which formed Urdu in Rohilkhand & Awadh was not available in Punjab, so which dialect then formed this base of Urdu if not Khari Boli?
      02 Urdu & Hindi are like twin languages, but Urdu & Punjabi are not! So it seems likely that Urdu is basically from a region that has Hindi, Hindustani & similar Urdu like languages. Urdu just doesn't fit amongst the tapestry of Punjabi Dialects.
      03 Only eastern dialects of Punjabi (spoken in India) have same ancestor (Shaurseni Prakrit) as Urdu, but western Punjabi dialects (spoken in India & Pakistan) have a different ancestry (Kakei Prakrit) so these western Punjabi Dialects can't have Urdu as one of the Language in their group!!!

      1) Hindi is not an actual language infact it was created deliberately by Hindu Priests or Hindu Nationalist in spite of Urdu.
      2) Hindustani is the actual language of the common people and it has different dialects in the Hindavi-Belt according to the region.
      3) Hindustani was the actual language which originated from the Hindavi-Belt i.e. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Hyderabad-Deccan and Madhya Pradesh.
      4) Urdu is the literary and standardized register of the actual language i.e. Hindustani(Hindavi) and it was utilized by the gentry nd educated classes from all ethnic and religious backgrounds.
      5) Hindustani also has local registers which are as follows:
      Khari Boli/Kaurvi (Delhi and Uttar Pradesh)
      Awadhi/Purbi (Uttar Pradesh)
      Braj Basha (Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh)
      Bundheli (Madhya Pradesh)

      Maithli (Bihar)
      Dekhani (Hyderabad-Deccan)
      Dhakiya (Dhaka)
      Karachvi or Karachi's Urdu (A new dialect formed due to the amalgamation of the distinct dialects of the native speakers of the Hindustani from the Hindavi-Belt)
      6) The Hindustani and English are akin to eachother in terms of history, development and adoption.
      7) Urdu(Hindustani) is not native language of regions situated and it was not developed and born within the boundaries of Pakistan but still is the Lingua Franca of the majority and the gentry class from this region also contributed a lot in Urdu.
      Urdu plays the same role in the Subcontinent as English plays for the people globally and it does not matter if the native speakers of both languages are very few in number compared to the overall speakers of the language.
      7) The ethnocentrist ret@rds can calm down about the so-called imposition of Urdu on their native lands as Pakistan did not nationalized the whole Hindustani language instead Pakistan just adopted the necessary standardized and literary register of the Hindustani language. No one is forcing anyone in Pakistan to learn Braj Basha, Khari Boli or Dekhani etc instead just the standardized version of it as no one is forcing you to learn the Cockney, Pitmatic, Scouse and Cheshire dialects of English etc.
      Inshort, Hindi is not language and stop calling Hindi a language as even in India they still speak and use Urdu (Hindustani).
      Hindustani(Hindavi) is the actual language which was developed over time and has different dialectic varieties based on the regions within the boundaries of the Hindavi-Belt(Hindustani Belt) and Urdu is just the standardized and literary register of the Hindustani(Hindavi) language.

      Urdu like Hindi is originated in India (not in Pakistan). A lot of Indians living in Lucknow, Delhi, Rohilkhand (Rampur, Bareilly etc), Hyderabad & other parts of Deccan speak good Urdu, esp Lucknowi Urdu is considered as the sweetest & softest variety of Urdu. Homeland of Urdu is western Uttar Pradesh of India. Yeah, its a very beautiful language!

    I am a regular follower of your podcasts and vlogs. But, dear buddy, this time your agenda is useless, however, you have improved our knowledge in this video about languages. I would like to mention here, Urdu is so powerful that it has an ability to adopt words from other languages. State has promoted Urdu but still English is a language of elite. The competitive exam demands too much in English only and candidates do their best effort to make it happen in English. Later on, when they become bureaucrat generally speak in Urdu or any other language so why English just to discriminate masses. You have not said any word for English but the Urdu which is acceptable for all is on your radar. The riots of language in Bengal could be solved if Bengali got same status like Urdu. First of all, our major population is not much literate and they are able to speak Urdu that is enough for now. I am Baloch and I love the accent of our Baloch, Pathan, and Brahvi brothers' Urdu accent common in Balochistan. Similarly, in Sindh, Punjab and KPK Urdu with different dialect is spoken. We have many other issues need to resolve. Let it go for Urdu.

They had a Hindustani bias, which then got internalised by the working class of Punjab. Finally resulting in rise Urdu in Punjabi land. That's probably why some authors of Punjab chose to write in Urdu instead of Punjabi.
      That means Punjabi already was on the backfoot in her native region, got compromised even further due to the official Urdu imposition post independence.

      I totally agree! India is a role model when it comes to celebration of linguistic diversity. India has 22 official languages at federal level! That's a marvel of richness & vibrancy!
      There's however an issue with north Indian languages where many full-fledged languages are being falsely labelled as "Hindi Dialects", this denies them their rightful distinct existence. This is the story of Rajasthani, Bhojpuri, Angika, Bajjika, Magadhi, Bundeli, Bagheli, Haryanvi, Awadhi, Braj, Pahadi, Kumaoni, Garwali etc. Its very important to recognise these languages the way we recognised languages in South.
      Another point of contention is Urdu, which is falsely being perceived as the language of a particular community. This is completely against the composite & secular character of Urdu. Its one of the most beautiful Indian languages. It should be brought back in her secular self!

      If we speak about Urdu in Pakistan, the first & foremost truth is that Urdu do not belong to Pakistan as a native language the way it belongs to India. The version of Urdu spoken in Pakistan is not very pure either. Jaayein, Aayein, Lein, Dein is not proper Urdu. Not to mention high Punjabi influence on Urdu in Pakistan so much so it even alters the structure of an Urdu sentence in favour of Punjabi. If at all Urdu survives in Pakistan it will mainly be as "Punjabi Urdu fusion", a far cry from her actual Hindustani Urdu self.

    For some reason, we are more concerned about urdu being pushed down as a national language than English as a state / official language. Imagine the enhancement in access to information, education, justice, if all legal documents and correspondence were in our local languages. Urdu is our local language, it is a common one among the multi lingual community and nation of Pakistan. I do not see urdu being national language an alienation or undermining of other languages, you always need a language for the nation in which the units will communicate effectively through official channels. Imagine parliamentary affairs if every individual acted under hubris to only speak their regional language, rest of the people wouldn't even understand him, and here I emphasize urdu being that operational language rather than english, because majority of the nation understands it better. Urdu is our language nonetheless, english never was and never will be. Look at Iran's president speaking in his own language, we are still under colonial hangover. The energy you guys pedal into language issue is almost always misdirected, Urdu being national language is no big deal, even if you name all the languages as national, you still need a language for the federation at large, the choice is urdu or english, for some reason no one has a stomach ache as long as its English. This is just another issue that was heavily politicized for power struggles by populist politicians to manipulate public sentiment in their favor. To quote no. Of native Urdu speakers reeks of malfeasance because that does not take away the fact that majority of the nation is equipped with functional ability in speaking and understanding Urdu either in writing or speech and thank god for it, how else would a Pakhtun survive in Sindh and vice versa etc. You always need one language for all the units at large, to pick one from either of the units where it is a majority would rise injustice of inequity such as Punjabization of Pakistan, Sindhization etc, Urdu works literally because its the minority. Its national status allows it to be taught at national level and help us become a nation through common tonque from one generation to another. Its a good thing Urdu, go fight colonial legacy of English instead that has resulted in exclusion of a majority of people of Pakistan. Food for thought: How many are you willing to watch a national news channel that only speaks Sindhi or Pashto or English? If Urdu was not operational in majority, these news channels wouldnt thrive. Urdu connects our plural and diverse society, don't make it a villain that it isn't, dissent for the sake of dissent serves no purpose and does not make you a rebel in counter culture swag. PS my mother tonque is Sindhi.

      Exactly my point.
      As Shashi Tharoor said in one of his interviews of English being link language among different states of India. As then it is then cruel to everyone equally.
      Why is it so wrong for Pakistan to have Urdu as link language which is much easier to learn and understand as it has common words in all the languages spoken in Pakistan. People don’t need any classes or coaching specifically to learn Urdu.
      I do agree local languages shouldn’t be pushed down or looked down upon, but still, in a country like Pakistan or India, where people belong to different cultural backgrounds, there’s always a need for a link language.
      Urdu was for sure politicised at the time of partition, but it was spoken and well respected before the British came. There are so many other controversies in Pakistan, now people have found this new issue to fight and hate each other.
      I for one will always love Urdu as a language 💁🏻‍♀️

However, the combined state of Andhra pradesh was to have its own province based on the language Telugu. But Nehru denied the formation of this state. Then one person by name Potti sreeramulu fasted for 56 days and died. Then Andhra pradesh was formed. But now the state is divided into Telangana and Andrapradesh. This division happened on developmental issues. I think India has moved on from linguistic state formation to more of development programs

    • @virferind7946
      @virferind7946 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah that's true to considerable extent! But at the same time there are two more points:
      01 One of the angles of Telangana & Andhra Pradesh divide was language itself, that Telangana people alleged that their dialect Telugu ("Telangana Slang") is not being given her due status & dignity in united Andhra and the Telugu of Seemandhra is dominating all the scenes!
      02 At present, many aspirant states in India are being demanded on linguistic lines- Gorkhaland (Nepali), Kosal (Kosali), Bodoland (Bodo), Mithila (Maithili), Kutch (Kutchi), Tulu Nadu (Tulu), Coorg (Coorgi) etc.
      That means linguistic consciousness is still a matter for people. Its very hard to not love your own language. India is vibrant becoz of her linguistic diversity. India is very progressive & it should be, but Indian linguistic sentiments are our strength not a hurdle to economic development!

      @@ThePakistanExperience You do not speak your own mother tongue, why celebrate Mother Language day then? Urdu has become the lingua franca of Pak, and no other language can take its place now. Instead of dwelling in the past, try to understand why Urdu resonates with the masses. Survival of languages hinges on their utility. Languages survive and thrive when used for communication, trade or politics by the majority of the population. Urdu meets the need of the day, if it stops fulfilling the need of the majority of the population, it will also die out. My ancestors spoke Persian, but necessity compelled them to adopt the local dialect. They embraced it, incorporated the words of their cherished Persian and Arabic languages into that dialect, hence Urdu was born.
      Don’t take me wrong. I am one of those who bleed green. I love everything that is or has ever been a part of the age-old civilizations which flourished in this ancient land of the Indus. While I hold deep affection for all languages spoken in our land, I also acknowledge the reality of our situation. Regional languages are an integral part of our national heritage, and the government should take necessary steps so that they can be preserved - but Urdu will continue to hold its position as the national language.

      For Punjabi Pakistani muslims let them decide what they are speaking but claiming that Indian Punjabi Hindus don't speak Punjabi is bit of an exaggeration and also seems quite patronizing specially when it comes from Sikhs, it seems like they claim to be owner of Punjabi and order others what to speak or not, I guess first of all this certain section of Sikhs need to get out of this Punjabi owning phobia.
      So far in my life I have never met s Punjabi hindu who is born and brought up in Punjab and couldn't speak Punjabi, however his/her probability of being equally proficient in Hindi would be more than Sikhs , which I guess what irks a certain section of fundamental Sikhs. Why to mansplain others ? You are as much the inehritor of the language as is the other one, so why this condescending behaviour?
      Regarding the debate of Hindus declaring their mother tongue as Hindi in 61 census was purely a political decision to fight against the demand of fundamental Sikhs of for a Punjabi suba, which apparently meant a Sikh majority state.

      It is absolutely correct. Pre partition and a little afterwards film scripts were written in Urdu. In particular film songs employed the use of the Urdu language due to its poetical qualities. This was particularly the case as the film industry was very Muslim dominated. Lots of song lyricist such as Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi, Josh Malihabadi etc came from a Hindustani/Urdu heritage. Sure, imposing Urdu was never a great idea, but there is the practical problem of communication, for which a common language is required. Once again, you dived deep into academic arguments, which have definite merit, but ignored practical concerns. Anyone immigrating to Canada/UK, is required to sit for IELTS, not because English is being imposed, but because it is the language of communication in those countries, and knowledge of it is a practical need. Canada in fact has a second language, French, and if one has proficieny in that, they can immigrate to Quebec. As for what were they were doing before 1947, well, this exactly, Hindustani and/or English served as the common denominator.

    The majority of Pakistani punjabis who speak Urdu, do it with a Punjabi twang even if they claim to read or write Urdu. Many Urdu speakers don’t know the first thing about Pakistans history, army’s involvement or politics.
