Ahmed ji you're quite right. Now in India almost 60-70 % people are comfortable with hindi atleast 40% people can write and read hindi. With time it will increase further. But we didn't kill local languages. The regional languages are still flourishing be it Punjabi, bengali Assamese, Tamil, telegu, kannada, Marathi, Gujrati.... India is a perfect example that you can still promote an unifying language with simultaneous promotions of other languages.

Stop presenting Urdu as if it's a colonial language in Pakistan like we see in case of English in India or French in Mali or Portuguese in Angola. Urdu, Punjabi, hindko and Sindhi being Indo-aryan langauges are sister langauges characterised by mutually intelligibility and can be considered as dialects of each other just like Spanish and Portuguese are. Being indo-iranian language, it's also very very close to Pashto and other iranic languages like Persian and source of vocabulary of Urdu language is fundamentally Persian.
chal bhai bahut drama ho gaya ye baat sun sun kar ki urdu is the language of India lekin tumhe pata honi chahiye ki India mein agar kisi language ke saath sab se zyada bhed bhaao aur sautela vyavahar hua hai to wo Urdu ke saath hua hai, ab to india mein boycott urdu words ke trend bhi chalne lage hain, aur haldiram company aur urdu maamla ka to tumko achhe se pata hi hoga. Urdu ko kahi agar pyaar, izzat, sammaan and promotion mili hai to wo Pakistan mein hi mili hai. Urdu has been respected, loved and honored in Pakistan so much so that it became the national language Pakistan. So stop bullshiting by saying such things. Most of the Jews were also born and raised in Germany, but still they hate Germany and love Israel bcoz they got shelter in Israel, and in the same manner Urdu got shelter in Pakistan. I'm speaking this fact being an Indian patriotic muslim. If there is any language that is hated most in India, then ofcourse it's Urdu Language, watch this video reflecting anti-urdu sentiments across India.
    th-cam.com/video/EvKqNppQjE4/w-d-xo.html
    th-cam.com/video/bUws1L5NZmQ/w-d-xo.html and
    th-cam.com/video/c4ZgXeHnMhY/w-d-xo.html
Jo log pakistanio ko kahte hain ki Urdu is the language of India, wo log bahut hypocrite hote hain, wo log Indian Muslims ke saamne Urdu bhasha ko gaali denge aur lekin pakistanio ko neecha dikhane keliye kahenge ki Urdu is the language of India. Hypocrisy ki bhi ek hadd ho hoti hai bhai.

What a pity the language that brings fame and fortune for the people whose mother tongue is different than the language in which people get popularity in the entire subcontinent and even beyond does happen to be the most hated language this is nothing but the thankless approach and attitude of the people who thrive because of this lingua franca of the whole south west asia the Urdu language! Shame to the small hearted narrow minded people getting bread and butter by adopting Urdu through art culture cenima music and drama and mostly enjoy the art and culture in this language but do not appreciate and recognize the role of Urdu language in providing them entertainment and joy! Shame! Shame and shame!

Sir,before 1947,urdu was promoted as common people language by moghuls.urdu is a Turkish word meaning lashkar(an army contingent).
It was essentially hindi of Delhi-UP region with smattering of persian and Arabic words written in arabic script from right to left.
In 1947 Pakistan had only regional languages, and since Pakistan army/establishment believed themselves to be descendents of moghuls, urdu was adopted as the national language of Pakistan.

One should not forget that punjabi is more o less a boli without a script so making it official we will have to learn Urdu so we can write in punjabi. On the other hand Sindhi and pushtu have scripts and they could be used as an official language.

There are so many problems with Urdu that it won't survive - neither in India, nor in Pakistan or anywhere in the world. Other issues aside, its fundamental issue is that its head is in the past, and that too only in a specific 150 year period approximately between 1700s - 1850s. Such a language will be practically unworkable.

First of all, standardise Punjabi, it's script Shahmukhi, technical glossary and then make it the national language. Then India can make Urdu as it's official language.

      Salam alaikum,
      -Nice idea
-But Potohari and Seraiki people won't accept standard Majhi Punjabi which is based around Lahori Punjabi.
-Instead we should think about Choosing a middle dialect for standardization.
-Jhang city's Punjabi will do the job as it is as closer to Seraiki and Northern dialects.
-Design more alphabets that represent more than one type of pronunciation just like Pushto did with the sound of 'Sha' and 'Kha' and introduced the letter ښ kheen/sheen
      -For example: 'Ki karda hain.'
      and 'Ki karNa hain.'
design a separate letter for the sound of na and da.
So as to preserve the individual beauty of all dialects and unify Punjabi speakers.

You haters always keep jealous with Urdu hate has no cure! We have sympathy for you!

Languages are national assets and should be protected and allowed to progress. Multi lingual countries like India, Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, US (some states by Adoption of major immigrants languages) and many African countries have done a excellent. Pakistan like in all major issues have utter confusion.

Persian was and is the only language that should have been made national language of Pakistan. By making Persian our national language we (Pakistan ) would become a part of central Asia culturally. Due to Urdu as a national language, Pakistan is still culturally a part of Indian sub-continent . so we are being influenced by Indian movies, their culture their language etc. Persian was/is a much developed language (than Urdu) then and now. We have great literature in Persian. It was the language on which Alama Iqbal , Mirza Ghalib and all Muslims of India were proud of.
