Bach - Motet Jesu, meine Freude BWV 227 - Prégardien | Netherlands Bach Society

  • The pleasure felt by modern people listening to a piece like 'Jesu, meine Freude', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, may conflict with our ideas about death. Yet such a comforting, sometimes positively cheerful piece fitted perfectly in a Lutheran memorial service, which is where this motet would undoubtedly have been sung. But whose funeral it concerns remains a mystery.

I was very ill and had to be hospitalized for more than two weeks during Christmas and New year's. The next two months during my recovery these motets were non stop playing in my house.
It helped me through an intense period in my life and i am feeling better then ever now.
Bach is medicine for the heart and soul.

So painful to imagine he had to give Latin lessons to a bunch of brats rather than sitting down on the country side to get inspiration for a new Passion or new concertos... Bach had a tough life indeed.

    1.Chorale 0:08
    Jesu, meine Freude,
    meines Herzens Weide,
    Jesu, meine Zier!
    Ach wie lang, ach lange,
    ist dem Herzen bange
    und verlangt nach dir!
    Gottes Lamm, mein Bräutigam,
außer dir soll mir auf Erden
    nichts sonst Liebers werden.
    Jesus, my joy,
    my heart's pasture,
    Jesus, my treasure!
    Ah, how long, ah long
    has my heart suffered
    and longed for you!
    God's lamb, my bridegroom,
    besides You on earth
nothing shall be dearer to me.
    2. Chor 1:18
(Romans 8:1)
Now there is nothing damnable in those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk after the way of the flesh, but after the way of the Spirit.
    3. Choral 3:51
    Unter deinen Schirmen
    Bin ich für den Stürmen
    Aller Feinde frei.
    Laß den Satan wittern,
    Laß den Feind erbittern,
    Mir steht Jesus bei.
Ob es itzt gleich kracht und blitzt,
Ob gleich Sünd und Hölle schrecken,
    Jesus will mich decken.
    Under your protection
I am safe from the storms
    of all enemies.
    Let Satan rage,
    let the enemy fume,
    Jesus stands with me.
Whether now it thunders and flashes,
    whether sin and Hell terrify,
    Jesus will protect me.
    4. Chor 4:55
(Romans 8:2)
For the law of the spirit, which gives life in Christ Jesus, has made me free from the law of sin and death.
    5. Choral 5:45
    Trotz dem alten Drachen,
    trotz des Todes Rachen,
    trotz der Furcht dazu!
    Tobe, Welt, und springe;
    ich steh hier und singe
    in gar sichrer Ruh!
    Gottes Macht hält mich in acht;
    Erd und Abgrund muß verstummen,
    ob sie noch so brummen.
    Defiance to the old dragon,
defiance to the vengeance of death,
    defiance to fear as well!
    Rage, world, and attack;
    I stand here and sing
    in entirely secure peace!
    God's strength holds me in watch;
earth and abyss must fall silent,
    however much they might rumble.
    6. Chor 8:12
(Romans 8:9)
You, however, are not of the flesh, but rather of the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives otherwise in you. Anyone, however, who does not have Christ's Spirit, is not His.
    7. Chorale 10:47
    Weg mit allen Schätzen,
    du bist mein Ergötzen,
    Jesu, meine Lust!
    Weg, ihr eitlen Ehren,
    ich mag euch nicht hören,
    bleibt mir unbewußt!
Elend, Not, Kreuz, Schmach und Tod
soll mich, ob ich viel muß leiden,
    nicht von Jesu scheiden.
    Away with all treasures,
    you are my delight,
    Jesus, my joy!
    Away, you vain honors,
I don't want to listen to you,
    remain unknown to me!
Misery, want, torture, shame and death
shall, although I must suffer much,
    never part me from Jesus.
    8. Chor 11:59
(Romans 8:10)
However if Christ is in you, then the body is dead indeed for the sake of sin; but the spirit is life for the sake of righteousness.
    9. Chorale 13:46
    Gute Nacht, o Wesen,
    Das die Welt erlesen!
    Mir gefällst du nicht.
    Gute Nacht, ihr Sünden,
    Bleibet weit dahinten,
    Kommt nicht mehr ans Licht!
Gute Nacht, du Stolz und Pracht!
    Dir sei ganz, du Lasterleben,
    Gute Nacht gegeben!
    Good night, existence
    that cherishes the world!
    You do not please me.
    Good night, sins,
    stay far away,
    never again come to light!
    Good night, pride and glory!
To you utterly, life of corruption,
    be good night given!
    10. Chor 17:13
(Romans 8:11)
Therefore now since the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, that same who raised Christ from the dead will make your mortal bodies living, for the sake of His spirit that dwells in you.
    11. Chorale 18:39
    Weicht, ihr Trauergeister,
    denn mein Freudenmeister,
    Jesus, tritt herein.
    Denen, die Gott lieben,
    muß auch ihr Betrüben
    lauter Zucker sein.
Duld' ich schon hier Spott und Hohn,
dennoch bleibst du auch im Leide,
    Jesu, meine Freude.
    Hence, you spirits of sadness,
    for my Master of joy,
    Jesus, comes here.
    For those who love God,
    even their troubles
    must be pure sugar.
Though I endure mockery and shame here already,
nevertheless you stay with me even in sorrow,
    Jesus, my joy.

I do not agree. He was well aware of what he had written but as a modest and humble man he was, he never said this. That's why he gave us the mass in b-moll, a compendium of all his masterworks and ability to perfectly use the counterpoint. He was absolutely aware that nobody reached his level to use the counterpoint and maybe nobody will ever after him.
That's why he urged his children to keep his music save so that it can prevail eternity.

You don´t need to be religious to feel the spiritual power of this piece and performance. Wonderful.

    • @prometheusrex1
      @prometheusrex1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Wrong. The spiritual is irreducibly religious; if you feel "spiritual power," you are religious (even if you attempt to divorce yourself from traditional dogma and praxis). See, e.g., William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience (Oxford University Press, 2012), at 32 (religion is "the feelings, acts, and experiences of individual men in their solitude, so far as they apprehend themselves to stand in relation to whatever they may consider divine").

    • @aguilaru0007
      @aguilaru0007 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

prometheusrex1 thanks for your opinion. I believe my short statement is easier to understand than a long dissertation about pathos. As a non native English speaker I used spirit as a shortcut to express how Bach’s music moves me, even when I am not religious. I was a pure rationalist for long time but the experience showed me to be humble and accepting other people’s “models” to describe reality, as long as they respect my own “view”. Once again, thanks for the quote (I will search for it) but discussing about philosophy in a TH-cam channel does not feel appropriate to me. I’m here to enjoy Bach and the wonderful performances this channel offers (for free!!).

Quite a bold statement, tbh. Sacred choral music was born during middle ages, and was brought to greatness by the work of masters such Perotin, Dufay, Josquin Desprez, Palestrina, Byrd, Monteverdi, Schütz, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, whose works Bach's music is founded upon

Wonderful. One of my favorite pieces of music ever. So much depends of the interpretation and performance and this was wonderful, though the fugue in the sixth movement was just a bit faster than I’m accustomed to. Perhaps it’s a quirk of the recording I have.

Gute Nacht!

How I have longed and languished for this! You can only do it this fast if the sound is absolutely clear, as it is, and the attack immaculate. I am not sure about the truncation of phrase ends in the second and penultimate movements, but the resonance of the accoustic compensated somewhat.
