“ It’s load bearing aluminum foil “, lmao! Don’t tell them I that, they will believe you! I love your work ethic and informative videos. Been doing this almost 4 decades but it’s always great to see other techs going through the same process. Keep it up, your videos are always fun to watch.
I put tpo on my 36-foot motorhome myself, and it definitely was a learning curve.but in all, it turned out very well and feel it will last the rest of my life span.
The real way to bond TPO is gluing the deck and the sheet. Roll it in once it's tacky. I see all these rvs fail because roofs are put on wrong, gluing only deck. Of coarse I am a commercial roofer of 25 years so have significant experience
Im doing mine this summer to get it over with and its gonna be commercial for ever, worked with epdm and tpo for the last 7 years you cant go wrong.Good Job!!!
When you mentioned ‘down in Georgia how they do things’ I had to think. You’re talking the ‘rv roof install’ guys who also have a TH-cam channel and do the seam welding etc. They’re amazing guys and do incredible work too. Not unlike yourself, Chad and Micah. Thanks James.
I watched videos about that roof stuff from some company in the east. They make curbs and heat weld it all together. It’s good stuff. Expensive but it will out last the coach. Good video 👍🏼
They do a good job but unaffordable. Cost more to install then the rv is worth, when I got a quote. Have to figure out how to do it on my own, material not expensive only the guys doing the work.
Now you know why we are the best James. It's not easy by no means. Although we do have full wrap scaffolding and we are inside. I'll bet you all got stones with that solvent adhesive...lol. Dicor may be easier to out down but it certainly isn't better. We don't use GAF anymore. I may have to make a road trip to show you all how to get it done...lol.
@@AZExpert that's is a structured membrane... that's the weave or mesh you see. 45 mil is a bit easier to work with. We use 60. I'd like to see his curbs as well. Takes me 1.5 hrs to build one and I designed them. Critical welds on the curbs.
This is awesome my 2 favorite youtubers complimenting one another. Just started my 5th wheel rebuild July 6th. Lots of dry rot. Wall with slider is leaning in. Kids and wife want me to set trailer on fire. Buy another but I am debt free wanna remain that way
Hi James, Thanks for your videos I live in Ga and after watching your instructions I acquired a 2000 30Q hurricane and did a complete redo, and installed the PVC roof I wanted the Commercial TPO but it was way out of my price range, With your instructions the PVC was a very doable job. they had the PVC membrane but no glue I asked them what was required to comply with the warranty and was told and sourced and completed thanks again
Did mine last year same way. I highly recommend it but definitely not for a amature. Built my own curbs and all. After doing standard rv too roofs I will never go back to rv standards. Bought another rv last month and even though the roof is in good shape I'll be replacing it with GAF and curbs. I was quoted $10k to have my roof replaced. I did it for less than $2k
Great video James. Where you cut the wires was where I had my leak problem. It originally had foam that had dried out and turned to dust. I squirted silicon into it like the ones you removed. Still had a leak, so I foamed it again. No more leak so far. Best Wishes! Kevin
thank you for the video this is exactly what I'm putting on my Monaco Windsor this week I'm gooing to leave everything off the roof I already replaced all the wood thanks again
Thanks for showing us this. It would be great if the owner provides us some updates on how he finished the job. When I used to do laminate on cabinets, if it was a long run we would use pipes every so often to keep it from touching it until we laid it down I don’t know if that something you could try or think about next time.Pipes would be maybe a foot to a foot n half apart and then you would pull pipe out smooth that out to the next pipe then pull that pipe out.u get the idea. I did this on my prowler fifthwheel but just fastened it and I live in northern Quebec went true much heavy off road in winter never leak never ripen but I got to find metals max air some day 😁
I'm about to do the same to my coach. 60mil GAF TPO. I had already fabricated the curbs, used GAF detail membrane and heat welded all together. It's a VERY tedious and time consuming process! I made a few mistakes along the way and had to redo a few. That's expected when you're learning to do this but gets easier over time. Now I'm ready to install next week!
While on the topic of roof repair, I have got my own little project going on. I am repairing the edpm (auto correct inserted Rodman then Edomite in place of “edpm”. You gotta love the auto correct feature.) roof on my 23’ travel trailer. So, it has been a zen practice removing the flaking paint from the “Rodman” roof. I started with Dawn, water and stiff bristle brush to get the big patches. I am now down to a putty knife with a sharpened edge to coax some of the remainder. If it doesn’t come up willing, I leave it and move on. I will be applying Pro Guard Liquid Roof (primers and sealant). I have on occasion lost focus and nicked the roof down to the black (

I'm looking for air conditioner curbs for a pair of Pelican model air conditioners. Stock they just have a piece of foam sealing them, not good. I just installed a new TPO with your instructions, but the AC units lak. Thanks
I repaired my pop up. I don't know what the fabric is called but, I got it from my client. He transports wine in 18 wheeler containers. It's a big 20x10 ft Bladder that holds wine. The fabric is plastic and has cloth inside of it. Very tough fabric...
Owner should have had the channel that specializes in 60 mil TPO roofs do it. It should be noted that it seems that this fairly long Class A owner was trying to get this done on the very cheap. Even with purchasing the commercial TPO roof for this size coach, $2k to do the install is way too cheap. We did have a roof replacement for our very much smaller 25' 6" estimated by the other channel and it was too expensive for us but with a warranty that would probably outlive us and maybe even RVROOFINSTALL. If you want a 60 mil TPO roof, go to the experts that do that, however, be prepared to pay for it. For AZ Expert and for Cassone RV that did this one, congratulations! You were very kind to this owner, and we hope you got paid correctly for your efforts.
While I feel your intention of your comment was good, giving advice to the owner against my channel seems less than good natured. As a warning to others, still unkind. Cassone's RV merely helped a RVer that had been taken advantage of and had a roof exposed to the weather, I just brought interested viewers along and helped where I could.
@@AZExpert No, you're misconstruing our comment! Love your channel and would not give against it! We were chastising the owner for trying to get others to do work that for $2k was unreasonable! Note the end of the comment where we say you are very kind and did excellent work on that owners coach!
We were looking forward to a road trip to Arizona and contacting you soon to utilize your expert and skillfully professional talents to tackle a small water delamination corner spot on our Snowriver Truck Camper. We only wanted the best in the industry. Have you retired from repair and just do inspections now? All the best to you. Stay Safe and Free.
That seems like it would be a true monster of a roof once installed but the installation process itself, wow😳 Perhaps better suited as a factory option as a custom-ordered feature. I would pay extra for a roof like that... presuming the factory installs it correctly of course.

I'm putting a rubber roof on my Winnebago as, yes, it blew off in a wind storm. Can you tell me what you used to roll on the adhesive here? It looks like just a standard paint roll brush but want to make sure as I would think they would absorb too much stuff. Any quick answers would be appreciated. Awesome channel. Thanks,
"Commercial grade TPO" is identified as 60mil or thicker by the WSRCA, NRCA, and by nearly every manufacturer since 2009. And that's 60 before you factor things like fleece thickness. The reason why is TPO naturally erodes, losing thickness every year. Especially those utilizing halogenated fire retardants as opposed to the more modern formulas which prefer magnesium.
The guy has been watching too much RV Roof Repair. Wanting to make risers and melt the GAF together. They only show so much on that channel. Just enough to keep you interested. All I can say is good luck. 😆🤣
i tried to do it on my 2×6 slide roof..😢😢the plywoodwas out of my slide.i cut pvc .put glue on and when i applied pvc i missed the mark and it stuck..epic fail .you need two people even with a small piece..
Can you tell us what kind of roof we have, can’t figure it out? We have National Sea View, love her but we watch you and we’ll want to treat her right !
You Tubers!!!! I get your point though, people on here present themselves as experts and do not have the slightest clue. Do not jump on the first video you see on any given subject. Explore and learn, take the time to get multiple points of view. Or just go to AZ Expert first!!!
@@AZExpert It's a great source for DIY, but some people(my wife) think you can fix and build everything with staples and super glue!!!!!! They are on there too.
Hi i just saw this and i will like to ask would it be possible to use fiberglass instead or is it more expensive or harder to work with seeing that you have to sand it then paint i like how you work and how you explain things its always good to see a master at work i love rv but where i live unfortunately we don't have them here so much but one day i'll have my own
I have a truck camper where the front has a crack in it apparently from a roof leak that collected water and broke through the outer material. I am new to this camper and have never had a roof leak. As you know this water was from all the rain we got recently here in Phoenix Metro. Would the tpo material be a good replacement for this crack?
I had the same idea of using a material designed for building construction with a 30 plus year life span rather than the cheap crap they put on RVs in the factory.
12:10 where do I find this wood? Thats where I am at. I have the exact same roof and doing the TPO thing...but this wood...lol. Thank you SO MUCH for what you do for us!
Not to change your subject I have a water heater that hot water doesn't leave the water tank I've drained it filled it up or turn the water on with the plug out water goes into it fills it what not but will not leave do you have any suggestions stranded thanks Matt
If the roll is that incredibly heavy, should there be concern about the added weight to the overall weight, against it's limits? Did you advise the customer on its limitations? Does anyone else have comments on this? It seems like the greatest weak spots are the edges, and UV resistance, rather than roofing material thickness, provided no one is going to have to be up there, walking around and working on a recurring basis.
I can see why you didn't take this job or have time for it lol. Damn 1000lb roll of tpo. Last person was probably like ya I'm not dealing with this roll of tpo lmao.
I have a sun lite slide in pickup camper, the roof looks to be rubber with felt backing, what glue would I use? I haven’t removed anything as yet would this have luanne or plywood? The side walls seam soft so I’ll have to remove the aluminum siding.
Wow! Very eye opening. Note to self, if you buy a “rubber roof” Rv sell it in before the roof goes bad! Is the very “thin fiberglass” covering one piece fiberglass roofs much better?
I'm thinking about going with 45mil Tpo. But I'm not sure if 1/4" luan is sufficient to bond it to. One supplier says that 1/2" plywood must be used. I have a 2006 Rockwood ultralite with aluminum roof supports and 1/4" luan glued to foam. Any advice would be appreciated.
As a roofer myself, tpo is actually garbage. I wouldn't install it on a residential or commercial buildings. Yeah they're ok on RVs, I'm installing it on my travel trailer replacing some dry rot. But if you're installing tpo on your RV, then I'd recommend coating your camper roof with GE silicone on the wood, then lay the TPO (creates great adhesion and no moist can seap under it), fasten it with screws, then coat the entire tpo 2-3 times using the GE silicone roofing coating. It will get pricey but you're roof will last a loooong time. The GE silicone is UV resistant, stays elastic all its life which is great when traveling and all that movement on your roof. Also great when it gets hot/cold when your roof is breathing expanding and contrapting due it being elastic. Just leaving your tpo under the sun, the sun will cook it due tpo being plastic and not UV resistant.

the spray on Rhino lining is the way to do it now , I would never do this , to easy to damage it
Good job first time. Rolling glue too thin. The bubbles will gas out. Don't use 40 minute rule. Roll in once it's tacky or else it over dries
I can see why the heavy duty TPO used on buildings because it has to last decades where an RV only has to last long enough to drive off the lot.
I've been doing roof repairs for 20 years so....
i tried to do it on my 2×6 slide roof..😢😢the plywoodwas out of my slide.i cut pvc .put glue on and when i applied pvc i missed the mark and it stuck..epic fail .you need two people even with a small piece..
The TPO ROOFING I HAVE IS SMOOTH ON ONE SIDE AND TEXTURE ON THE OTHER SIDE, WHAT SIDE GOES UP, THANKS
I was mostly making fun of myself. I watch youtube videos all the time for help too.
Yes we do go you tube and watch because we think we can do it and then we need the pros .....
I'm with you, youtube helps me out so much almost every day
I had the same idea of using a material designed for building construction with a 30 plus year life span rather than the cheap crap they put on RVs in the factory.
You still have to inspect it twice a year
12:10 where do I find this wood? Thats where I am at. I have the exact same roof and doing the TPO thing...but this wood...lol. Thank you SO MUCH for what you do for us!
it's just 1/8 luan from Home Depot
Not to change your subject I have a water heater that hot water doesn't leave the water tank I've drained it filled it up or turn the water on with the plug out water goes into it fills it what not but will not leave do you have any suggestions stranded thanks Matt
Hail proof. Commercial building rated.
Thanks
No Chad, No Chad!....bad Chad. 😆
Well that thick tpo stuff just makes a heck of a lot more sense! Vs the thin, easy stretch, easy rip crap. Cheers 🍻
it is far superior indeed
If the roll is that incredibly heavy, should there be concern about the added weight to the overall weight, against it's limits? Did you advise the customer on its limitations? Does anyone else have comments on this? It seems like the greatest weak spots are the edges, and UV resistance, rather than roofing material thickness, provided no one is going to have to be up there, walking around and working on a recurring basis.
You should be up there inspecting the roof 2 times a year
I can see why you didn't take this job or have time for it lol. Damn 1000lb roll of tpo. Last person was probably like ya I'm not dealing with this roll of tpo lmao.
do you have a materials list and 60 mil, torch down?, Is that beautiful or if you got coal tar and asphalt or vinyl composite?
what about using a bitumen (bitchaThane) snow/ice shield product?
What would a 38" Class A cost for a new roof with all new wood cost?
That just seems like a lot of work. Do you think the commercial stuff will pass the cost-benefit sniff test?
he got a commercial roof cheaper than most dealers would have charged for a RV membrane so I think so. But I don't know if I'd like to do it again? :)
@@AZExpert I could tell that for sure. Seemed like a lot of things can go very wrong with that old school contact adhesive.
What is the name of the tarp you put on the roof? Where can I get it online and have it sent to Mexico?
It’s obvious that the owner was watching videos from RV roof install. Why didn’t he just go to them? They use commercial TPO with curbs
Is the very “thin fiberglass” covering one piece fiberglass roofs much better?
fiberglass is best
Which manufacturer uses fiberglass roofs? Thank you
I'm thinking about going with 45mil Tpo. But I'm not sure if 1/4" luan is sufficient to bond it to. One supplier says that 1/2" plywood must be used. I have a 2006 Rockwood ultralite with aluminum roof supports and 1/4" luan glued to foam.
Any advice would be appreciated.
What is that super thin wooden roof material called? cant find it for the life of me. Is it 1/8 plywood?
That stuff will outlast the RV ....
That is the hope
Inspect mine every time i go out lol
that's a great idea
Georgia boy knows how to do it lol
thanks for watching!
Where can I buy this commercial grade roofing material? .. and all the materials?
Curious about the cost of a new roof if the structure is good,? I have a 20ft 2008 Thor toyhauler and the roof is decenigrating
It is still thousands
Thanks for watching
What are the curbs are you talking about?
