Just a comment about Tiffin. I live in Hamilton, Alabama, about 25 miles from Red Bay where Tiffin is located. Hamilton Plastics, which was started by two local guys manufactured fiberglass showers and tubs, and they also manufactured the fiberglass front and rear caps and other assorted pieces for Tiffin. Trucks ran back and forth everyday hauling these components from Hamilton to Red Bay. The quality of these components was very high, they were thick, and there was much problem solving collaboration between the two companies. Then Hamilton Plastics was sold to a larger group, and Tiffin moved the fiberglass production in house, and the former Hamilton Plastics folks helped them set up there production line. When I hear you talk about the Tiffin quality-- I think about how a lot of regular country folks local to this area are a part of that quality. This is a very rural part of the country-- but a lot of good hard working folks who actually care about the quality of the work they did build these units.. Also-- I think Mr. Bob Tiffin really cared deeply about his employees, and his customers, and the results show that. With their recent acquisition by Thor-- I just hope this will continue-- but big corporations are not the same as local private ownership.....
While I like the greatest motorhome ever made, I do enjoy your repairs on a budget because that is what many people need to do. You gave that rig new life. Your worker seems to be doing well, I hope he is for the both of you. Stay safe and healthy.
Love your videos, just drove a 1998 coachmen mirada 28 from Florida to Quebec Canada, did the cheap and dirty liquid rubber on the roof, it's never leaving my place, this is where it's going to stay for ever, I work in the aircraft maintenance industry, we got REALLY good sealant that I plan on using around all windows and joints. If it works on planes it will work on a RV😂😂😂
Good evening Mr. Expert (Is "James" OK?) - What a terrific video! I love seeing episodes involving top shelf RVs like a Prevost or Patriot Thunder, but THIS project about a Budget Friendly repair is fascinating! It is very cool that the owner, with your help, is keeping this trailer going. I admire the owner of this rig for being in the game with a rig that will keep them warm and dry in their travels.
We have an old TPO roof (thanks for helping identify it!) So I have taken your sage advice about upgrading to a PVC roofing material when we get around to replacing and I've added it to my project checklist. Great video and your one-handed game is unmatched!
That stuff is amazing . I did my Kustom Coach 5th wheel last summer , it's withstood a lot so far , Xtreem hail storms in summer , and withstood -50 temps for a extended period last winter ....
@@AZExpert sometimes, lol, but Americans for longest time refused to use the Square bits because it wasn't American. But it was, Canada is part of North America, we are Americans too. But not United Statesians. A lot of good stuff comes from here, actors, inventions etc, but they all go down south lol. Even our huge oil reserves, goes down south gets refined and sold back to us at a high price lol. Furniture too. The unfortunate thing we get from the south is hand guns. We love the southern bros rifles. But not hand guns. Too many gangs here with guns shooting up the streets. But, I always enjoy your videos and outtakes. Just don't fall off the roof. Lol
We're doing the roof on a 2010 heartland north trail tomorrow and I started taking the trim off... no wonder we had a bad roof. Absolutely zero butyl tape under the trim.
Awesome Stuff, James. Really appreciate being able to, as an apprentice, look over the shoulder of a master in his craft. Your videos have Really helped me alot over the last few years to completely understand systems on my RV and be able to help my friends and family trouble shoot their issues. Keep up the great work!
James if the glue is water based and the membrane is waterproof it is drying through the wood. Taking about 24 to 36 hours to dry in a dry environment. Is that about right 😎
I have a 1996 avion Westport fifth wheel and it has its problems and I know little about repairing the water damaged walls but was hoping anyone could help me find someone to talk to about the process. I love watching your videos.
just an observation if you have a TPO roof or membrane roof and it goes bad why dont they replace with a fiberglass roof that is way more durable? Instead of putting on something that is going to fail sooner? Im so happy with my WGO View Filon roof no problems 2009 and you are in monsoon season there!
I have questions I live in georgia my dad has a construction company and roofing company so I grew up doing roofing and construction I'm a mechanic I watched your previous video my question is I have a 95 sportsmen my dad bought it new always been stored indoors but the roof is finally shot I bought it from him we are going to do the roof ourselves my biggest question is what material would you recommend? He can get TPO from the supplier he uses it has the rubber on it now it lasted almost 30 years but I plan on keeping it a long time because the thing is like new he's been very meticulous about it it's whole life and I see no need in going to spend 50k which material and I completely see your logic on lapping over the front and back I think you are 100% right about that it makes sense having been around construction who cares if it has a belly if the metal lifts as you said it will pool until it runs OVER the metal I thank you for that because I probably would have put it back how it was not knowing any better
Been watching your videos amazing work I also bought a 95 cobra sandpiper omg what did I get myself into what adhesive did you use for the pvc membrane
Fantastic work especially on a budget, which 99% of us are. James since you do more RV roofs, then I seen on TH-cam, which RV manufacturer has a better maintenance, free roof, structure, and material, wise, newer or older, model, class C or class A? Is fiberglass a better option compared to PVC and what do you think about the other spray on options that are out there now ? If you have a little bit more money in the budget what would you do for the longest lasting roof repair material that you could do? I know thickness of material is usually a better quality as well, so what is the brand or thickness that you would recommend for a longer lasting better than factory repair (Along with material that can be used roof structure, dependent ) thank you so much for your professional work and opinion, and sharing your work
You mentioned TPO roofs always need uv protection… I have the alpha tuff ply roof the felt back tpo and Alpha insists on that all I need to do is clean it with dawn blue soap and that is it. Should I be covering it with 303 or something? I didn’t know if you are talking about those tpo roofs or the cheap paper thin one on my 2019 Jayco Eagle… thanks!
Really like your channel, I have an issue I hope you can perhaps help me with. I am installing a new roof on my 5th wheel, I accidently used 901BA adhesive for the PVC roof membrane and of course it doesn't work. Is there any way to salvage my PVC roof material?
with the new roof coatings like Henry's tropicool, I'm surprised that folks are using any sort of roofing material at all??? just use the roof coating and skip the membrane. what do you think?
I think it's a bad idea. There are direct to deck products out there, but usually still have a knit fabric matrix that gets integrated into the roll on product.
The smaller black-headed screws, is that a special brand or style? Going to be reattaching the trim along the roof of a old camper I have. Was thinking about using hex-head roofing screws with the rubber washer, but like you said the heads are very big and it would make it a hassle to install the insert.
Membrane roofs can be DIY-able if you are handy/know trades. Lots of research and TH-cam certification required though. Every roof is a different case.
Thanks for the excellent video. I replaced a roof on my old 24' trailer with PVC. The local RV repair place wanted $4500. The trailer was barely worth that amount. I did it my self for about $1400. It was not a easy job but worth it to save an old 1991 trailer. - What is the plastic tool you are using to install the PVC insert on the trim? You also used it to remove the excess putty. Can you put an Amazon link to it please.
James our 2003 Newmar Dutch Star 3804 DP had a TPO roof. We bought it in 2016 and it had spent it's fist 14 years in the sun, I'm pretty sure with no UV added protection. When I replaced the roof in the winter of 2019-2020 the roof was perfect. I replaced it and 8 1/2 sheets of plywood only because of a leak at both acs where the bolts hold the acs down(outside of the gasket) cause a 1'x2' delamination and damage 3 sheets of plywood. Are you sure I need to add UV protection? What's the best way of doing that? Thanks James
So I was contemplating doing this PVC membrane, but I've come across more than a few failures where the PVC cracked. Spoke with a guy who installed one on his rig and it failed inside of 18 mos. Cracking just appeared out of nowhere. He said he followed instructions to a tee. Personally,.I know PVC to be UV unstable. Are these manufacturers adding stabilizers?
Nice of you to work with the owner on this one. Most wouldn’t in todays economy. I’m sure they appreciate it.
I love that the production value is going up and your humor is allowed to come out
Good video James. The things you do ONE handed continue to amaze me!

It is an expensive retrofit and sheet fiberglass doesn't conform to compound curves very well.

mostly the cheap stuff, but of course manufacturers tend to downplay weak points in their products.
