ALIENS (1986) FIRST TIME WATCHING (Movie Reaction) - Can Ripley Adopt Me Too?

  • I really enjoyed watching this movie and appreciating James Cameron's work. They did a very good job at putting together a continuation for Alien. Even the new characters they brought in were fun to watch and engaging (yes, i'm 100% talking about Vasquez and Drake lol, I loved them, oh and BISHOP). They also did a great job designing the MOTHER ALIEN (terrifying) and giving Ripley a very good excuse (storyline) to come back and be a badass again. In conclusion, we can all agree that the company sucks and that...there's probably more aliens out there, they didn't kill them all, or there wouldn't be a franchise haha.

Not every new detail makes it better. A song doesn't become better by just adding 1 more verse or longer guitar solo. Extended cuts are mostly to milk money from fans, to sell the movie twice. The term Xenomorph literally means "Unknown Form" and was included in the movie as a bullshit military/government jargon... but over the years has become the official name for the Alien.
The whole movie as well was explained by Cameron as an allegory for the Vietnam War, where a very high-tech army takes on a very low-tech enemy, and loses.
Cameron also understood how sequels should work, in that they need to expand on the lore, and then do something different... and at the same time, they need to be accessible to the audience as if they had never seen the original movie.
Aliens, and T2 as another example of Cameron's work, are perfect sequels, as you don't actually need to have seen the first movie.
The movie also only used 6 Alien suits. Using camera cuts, editing and tight angles, it appears there's actually hundreds.
Cameron also said he fell back on olde-filmmaking techniques that were used in the old days, as in his words they could "film the downfall of the Roman Empire using 3 extras and a bush".
He also utilised camera angles and wire-work with the stuntmen so they would have inhuman movements.
Carrie Henn wasn't an actress. She was scouted at school by the production when they visited schools near the studio looking for the perfect, cute kid.
She was literally hand-picked from her class.
The Alien Queen was also a working, life sized creature, built by Stan Winston, the same guy who's team worked on the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.
The difference with the Queen and say, the T-Rex, is that the Rex was animatronic.
The Alien Queen was in effect a suit, and had a whole team of people inside it to move the multiple arms and control the head.
The only animatronic part of the Queen was the mouth and inner mouth-tongue... which malfunctioned once, and the tongue punched its way through the teeth, sending teeth flying in every direction. The crew laughed at first, then realised they had to search and find the slender, glass-like teeth amongst all the parts of the surrounding set.
With the Queen though, you mentioned the first movie Alien as being a young one.
There's a caste with the species. Queen, and there are Drones, and Warriors.
In the first movie, the creature is a Drone, with a domed head.
In this movie, the creatures have ridged heads, and are the warriors of the hive.

      Xeno doesn't mean unknown.
"a combining form meaning “alien,” “strange,” “guest,” used in the formation of compound words:

Ripley's power comes from her resourcefulness and practicality. Whilst impulsive and arguably reckless in her rescue of nute. She is driven by strong motherhood instincts, having been informed of her own daughter's death, she adopts nute as a surrogate. The scene where she stares down the queen; interposed herself between nute and the embodiment of her own nightmares embodies a truly well written female character. She reluctantly volunteered for a situation she didn't want to participate in, whether to purge herself of the survivors guilt of being the sole nostromo survivor or free herself of the demoted purgatory she found herself in upon her rescue (or both). The marines initially come across as arrogant due to the fact that they have succeeded in all their battles until their xenomorph encounter. The fact that Ripley was the least gung ho and still proves most effective shows that well written, vulnerable characters who can overcome their terrors are more relatable than many recent characters who seem to succeed in a flawless fashion, regardless of gender.

About Bill, I believed this for years also, but, on a recent watch of Terminator, I noticed his character only got thrown aside. Only one of the three men was killed on screen, so it's possible Bill's character was just knocked unconscious. It was also pointed out on another Aliens reaction where this came up, the xenos generally don't kill, preferring live captives as hosts. It's possible Hudson was just carried back to the nest and died in the explosion. So, possibly not killed by a xeno directly.

It should also be noted how appropriate it was for Lance Henrickson to play Bishop, because he was originally supposed to be The Terminator. Playing the role almost like how the T-1000 was in the sequel, menacing not in his size but just how casually he blends in with everyone around him, while still giving that haunting blank stare.
Yes, Arnie was totally born to play that role, but I would love to see an alternate universe where Lance was the T-800

I'm glad you got to see the original theatrical cut first. I think it's better. The extended cut is interesting after you've experienced the original. It adds little details, and also strengthens Ripley's and Newt's connection, because we learn that while Ripley was asleep for 57 years, her own daughter passed away due to old age. Also, being a James Horner fan (and this is one of the best scores for a film...EVER) it's interesting to note that part of the "Aliens" soundtrack was used as temporary music for the 3rd act of "Die Hard" during test screenings. "Die Hard" scored so high with audiences, they decided not to replace the music for the final cut. So, when you watch "Die Hard" you're hearing some of the "Aliens" soundtrack in there, near the end. Also, I cannot stress this enough, there are only TWO Alien films. There are no sequels. Ripley and Hicks eventually get married and adopt Newt, and "Uncle Bishop" lives upstairs. They all live happily ever after, and nothing bad happens to them ever again.

Not every director has the skills to use practical effects well enough to tell the story they want. Handing off to the art department for CGI is quite common. Now take that same director and give him CGI - you get something like AVATAR.

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is something I have to remind people of when they whine about CGI and say "they should just go back to practical effects"
Practical effects do not solve everything. CGI is a tool like any other, and the results depend entirely on HOW that tool is used. There have been PLENTY of movies before CGI that used practical effects, and yet looked HORRIBLE.
Today's directors that use CGI poorly would likely have just as poor results with practical. Its not the fault of the choice of effects, its the fault of the director.

Did you notice the big change in the Alien or Xenomorph design? The original Xenomorph had the same basic long head design but also had a smooth, translucent cover over it. James Cameron decided that in his opinion it just looked so much better without the cover, so he left it off, and now we can clearly see all of the underlying detail on the head, whereas we could hardly see it at all before.

Well.... He took us both for ice cream instead. I think I could have watched it without getting scared, but I dont know about my father. 😁 He used to read the old uncensored original grimm tales for us all, so we were kind of used to horror stuff anyway.

Fun facts: 1. The actress who played Vasquez wasn’t even Hispanic (good acting), 2. There were only 6 Xenomorph costumes made, so the cinematographers had the task of making it feel like there was a swarm attacking our protagonists, 3. The M43A1 pulse rifle was just a Thompson sub machine gun (Tommy Gun) with extra furniture to give it that sci-fi aesthetic, 4. The “Smart gun” used by Vasquez and Drake were MG42 machine guns (also with extra sci-fi furniture) mounted to a movie camera harness.

At its core Aliens is a tale of what lengths two mothers would go to in order to protect their young - also the directors cut actually shows alot of events you only hear about in this version - like we get to not only see the colony before the attack but even see that it was Newt's parents that were given the order (by Birk) to check out the sector what Ripley told them the alien ship was located and witness her father was the first one to be impregnated

The Alien(s) series has a lot of similarities with first two Terminator movies in terms of concept and development. The first one going for horror as the main approach and the second one being more diverse and heavily focused on action. Furthermore both series cause interesting debates whether the first movie or the sequel is actually better - something that is rather uncommon because often times sequels cant keep up with their successful predecessor. Last but not least, Terminator 1+2 were also directed by James Cameron, just like Aliens, but not Alien (as you pointed out correctly that it was Ridley Scott).

  • @oxhine

Hey, Amanda! This is one of the best sequels ever made!
Unfortunately, you didn't see the superior SPECIAL EDITION version which has the Amanda Ripley scene, the functioning colony scene, Newt's family's discovery of the derelict ship scene, the automated gun scene, the Hudson speculation about queen ants scene and the name exchange scene. These deleted portions enhance the movie greatly and the Special Edition is the cut James Cameron himself prefers!
The future Ripley inhabits is implied to be a dystopic corporatocracy. The most pervasive and powerful corporate entity is the Weyland-Yutani Company, a 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th- to 19th-centuries. It is a multinational conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar transport and terraforming with a stake in every colony world. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of the Alien universe. Ash and Burke were following a secret corporate mandate to obtain a xenomorph specimen in order to profit from research and weaponization. In the "AvP" films, you actually meet the company founders before their merger, Mr. Weyland and Ms. Yutani.
    Some trivia:
The picture of Ripley's elderly daughter in the Special Edition is actually Sigourney Weaver's real-life mother!
The late Al Matthews, who played Sgt. Apone, was a true-blue Marine who was the first black man to be promoted to Sergeant in the Corps during his service in Vietnam!
The knife-trick scene was originally supposed to be performed by Lance Henriksen alone but he convinced director James Cameron to surprise Bill Paxton by involving him as they shot the scene! Paxton's wide-eyed terror is completely real!
Fan favorite Vasquez is played by non-Hispanic Jenette Goldstein! She goes out like a warrior and enables Gorman to reclaim his honor.
Ms. Goldstein now is the proprietress of a Los Angeles-based boutique that specializes in bespoke large-size bras! The motto of her company is, "At Jenette's, the alphabet begins with 'D'."!
Bishop's programming to not harm humans or allow them to come to harm through inaction is ripped straight from Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics!
Carrie Henn, who played Newt, never acted again but became a schoolteacher. She still maintains a correspondence relationship with Sigourney Weaver thirty-four years later.
The late Bill Paxton, who has the distinction of being attacked on screen by an Alien, a Terminator and a Predator, will NEVER be forgotten for his reading of the line, "Why don't you put HER in charge?", referring to little Newt in her oversized helmet. Lol.
"ALIEN 3" is a DIVISIVE film but it's an EXCELLENT entry in the series. ABSOLUTELY SEE IT!!! It's directed by David Fincher and features Charles Dance and Charles Dutton. It's brutal, fast-paced, has some extraordinary scares, provides new insight into the creature and concludes the story elegantly. I strongly encourage you NOT TO SKIP IT! Make sure you see the ASSEMBLY CUT (Special Edition with longer runtime). "Alien Resurrection" is the optional one because it's a hot mess except for one cool aquatic sequence. The ambitious prequels, "Prometheus" and "Covenant", mark director Ridley Scott's return to the series but they are mostly good JUST for Michael Fassbender's performances. Scott demystifies the creature and unsatisfyingly attempts to address who the elephant-headed pilot of the derelict spacecraft was.

@@TechyMantis If memory serves, they speculate about the egg-layer in the theatrical cut but then Hudson mentions how the aliens seem to function like an ant colony with a big Queen ant tended by drones in the Special Edition. It's an extra beat to the conversation and Vasquez ridicules him. Besides none of the other footage made it through so, while it's possible she just happened to edit out every deleted scene, it's highly unlikely. Multiple commenters including myself encouraged her to see the Special Edition but she chose not to for whatever reason. Hopefully, she'll check it out in the future on a bigger screen she can see more clearly. She missed a lot.

The first one was directed by the brilliant Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Legend,Thelma and Louise, Gladiator….) James Horner was an excellent composer. Jerry Goldsmith scored the original. Goldsmith and John Williams scored most of the big film of the 70s and 80s but Goldsmith experimented more than Williams hence the minimalist score for Alien. James Horner’s first score was for Battle Beyond The Stars which James Cameron did the SFX for by this time Horner was a name and Aliens was Cameron’s first big budget studio picture so the two worked together again! Both started out with the great Roger Corman. I saw this when it first came out and was disappointed, I wanted a horror picture like the original. This was more of an action picture and was influenced by author Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers (it was made into a film that you might want to react to)

I don't know if someone already made a comment if the xenos eat the humans they bring to the hive or not, but to clarify the xenos only use humans to build their hive and increase their numbers. Once a chestburster comes out of a host, they don't do anything else to said host. It's just part of the hive wall and left to rot. From most sources online and the director's cut of Alien, in the absence of a queen, the xenos will somehow convert captured humans into eggs for more xenos or one of the warriors will evolve and mature into a queen. The latter one is believable in my opinion. Lastly the time between the facehugger implanting the egg into a host and a chestburster emerging varies on the movies. Alien: 12-24 hours I believe, Aliens: at least a day or more, avp and avpr: 10 minutes. The rest of the alien movies I can't figure the timeline. Again, I'm sorry if someone already gave this information out on the comments.
