Wooohooo! So awesome watching someone play this game for the first time!
You will want to pick up pretty much everything you see at first. Even if using Sim Settlements instead of building yourself.
And Ted and Gerri pretty much said everything else i was going to say. 🎉🎉🎉

If no one has answered your other questions in the comments. You can dump all the stuff you pick up in the workbench at the Settlements. Keep in mind anything you put in there can be broken down for materials while building or crafting so you may want to have a separate container for special weapons or armor if you want collect them to hang on to for display or even until you can upgrade them so you don'thave to carry extra weight around. Anything in the workbench can automatically be used for components in crafting and building.
Lone Wanderer is an awesome perk, dogmeat doesn't affect it but you don't get the benefits of it with any of the other followers. The others all have a quest. You can get your affinity up pretty quickly with MOST of them as long as you pay attention to their likes/dislikes and do the things they like. Their quests aren't timed (actions/decisions can lock them out but I don't want to spoilers for you) so you can trade out followers and send them to Settlements and pick them back up as you want or need to.
Oh, and just another tip, always take your fusion core out of your power armor when not in it.
When you are in your inventory Looking at your gear/weapons, the effects have ++++ or ---- next to the stats that are higher/lower than what you currently have equipped. Makes it a little easier to figure out if there is a better piece to use but gotta weigh the pros and cons still. One piece might give you another point in rad resistance, but weigh twice what your current piece does and not be worth the extra carry weight you lose wearing it as opposed to storing or selling it.

Been nice to see you back. I didn't start playing Fallout 4 until 2021 and fell in love with it. Like all Bethesda games you can really tailor it to your own taste with mods. I turned it into a harsh survival game and enjoy the hell out of it.

JT, welcome to my second favorite game after Skyrim and my favorite shooting game of all time. The only advice I am going to give you is change followers often and every bit of junk you find in the world will have a purpose at some point. So, don't be afraid to pick up stuff that may look like it's useless, you'll need it for crafting.

I don't know if you watch any of Jeremy Renner's stuff, but your character kind of looks like James Coughlin from the Town, which is cool since Fallout 4 is set around the Boston area.

You rang? heheh! Hokay you are really going to want to rethink your Special perks. Each perk on the skill tree requires that you have a proper number of ability points to get it. You need 3 points in strength to craft armor, 4 points in Perception to pick locks, etc.
A key perk is Charisma. The higher the CHA the better prices you get when buying and selling stuff, and when doing speech checks to gain more info and better fees for doing quests. Also higher CHA allows your settlements to have more citizens in them.
You will be using merchants A LOT.
Experience is gained by doing things. Finding new locations, doing quests, killing enemies. But also, hacking terminals and picking locks.
Then there is CRAFTING. every item you mod gives you XP, everything you build in a settlement via the workshop gives you XP, as well as cooking food, crafting chems, making stimpacks, craftin radaway all of that.
Crafting stuff of course requires a crafting station and Sanctuary does have all the primary crafting stations needed. You can pick these up from where you find them and move them about via the workshop. All the things you make require resources you have to scrounge. You will rapidly become a hoarder.
Lastly for today's lecture, Perk Points. You get ONE per levle, and in this game quests and magazines do NOT add more there is ONE magazine you can find under your son's crib that will give you a Special point of your choice. There are 7 bobbleheads that give you an extra point in your special stats, one bobblehead for each stat. THATS IT. Clothing and certain special armor can give you a point or two in special stats, but you can only wear one set of clothes or armor. SOME cloths allow you to wear armor over them some dont. A suit can boost your CHA by 2 pts Fnacy glasses or Blackrim glasses will boost Cha by 1 point and certain hats will too. You will want a "shopping ensamble" when you go on a buying spree once you find what passes for civilization

@@tedzaleschook Nice! A lot of good info. I’m most def going to make a lot of mistakes. I have a bad habit of over thinking things and probably went a bit too clinical with the progression I have in mind. But I’m going to have a blast! I’m not going make gun mods and when it’s time for me to make armor mods I’ve got something in mind. If what I’m going for doesn’t work I’ll adjust as needed. As for cha and speech checks, I’m soft role playing a kind hearted idiot, a guy that wouldn’t be very persuasive. Bottle caps I figure I’ll be able take advantage of the settlement system in some way. Since crafting gives exp, I figure you can exploit it to gain easy exp like in Starfield with I don’t want to do.
Thanks so much for this well laid out guide my dude!

@@jtsgaminghijinx I do the soft roleplay too. My latest Character is a woman who gets a scar added to her face every 10 levels she goes up to reflect what the wasteland has done to her as she progresses. She also clunks around in Power armor as a two legged tank. Mind, mosta my characters do, as I LOVE power armor.

Hey dude! First thing, thank you for your service! No, I didn't watch the fallout show. I dont plan to either. The wokeness killed it for me. If your feeling real brave, try playing on survival mode after your first playthrough. It is a challenge, but it feels more "fallouty" to play on survival mode if you ask me. But wait to do that on a second playthrough. I've played this game quite a few times. The fallout addiction is something else. Looking forward to your playthrough! Fallout is 100 times better than starfeild. Starfeild is utter woke garbage.

@@appalachiansapper12b64 hey there! I knew from the start I wouldn’t do survival on the first Playthrough. With the progression I have in mind I’m going to a bit squishy for a while. Adding survival on top of that would have been too much I think.
Yeah… the show. There are woke elements but it isn’t as preachy as some other shows I won’t mention. My biggest gripe was how the Brotherhood of steel was depicted and how the lead guy approached his character. With his back story he should have a core of iron, but he’s just really soft.
Starfield… I have concerns about TESIV now.
      Thanks for watching!
