    Having tortured myself a bit playing this game i discovered you can guaranteed perform a manual if your second input is held down, so when you do up up or down down, the second up/down must be held down. Also on the challenge with the 525 meter grind, you can begin a combo anywhere in the level, rack up some grind meter and then grind any one of the rails which makes it a little easier. This game seems like they didn't have enough time to QA test a lot of things. I think it's not terrible, but not good either. When you get enough respect points and attempt the competition levels, they are BRUTAL. You can get a 500k+ run and the judges will still not be happy with your score, the scoring system seems nonsensical. I complain about Tony Hawk's competitions being too easy, but god the competitions in this game are brutal. The trick system is pretty damn amazing in this game, it's just a shame they couldn't iron out all the clunky parts of the physics and the annoying collision detection.

    Whoever told you this was good, definitely lied. I remember as a kid at one house I had Tony Hawk on PS2 and at the other I had this on Xbox (the advantages of being a kid with divorced parents lol). I remember having no other games on Xbox and being stuck with this and just longing to play Tony Hawk the whole time. All of your complaints here were exactly mine back then. Hated the first level, could never figure out how to do the rail grind, always got lost in every level, controls never felt tight, everything just overall very sloppy and clunky as you said. As someone who played this back then, I don't remember it any differently. I believe BMX XXX did actually tighten up a lot of the mechanics, I think - I dont remember where I even played it lol. I think you could get away with covering BMX XXX on this channel, just skip the stripper vids, don't play as nude characters, and mute during any super offensive dialogue. Another great video as usual Rad Rat!

      I'll defend this game intelligently to a TH-cam legend, that guy can go to hell. There's 2 key things RadRat didn't know about in this video that make this game functional. The first is the trick modifier system which is actually pretty brilliant and ahead of it's time. I can't remember which buttons correspond to which tricks because it's been years since I played it on PS2, but when you do a trick like a backflip or superman or turndown or whatever, you can keep holding the square button and hit circle button plus a direction and modify it to be no handed or one handed or cross legged or whatever. The other is that landing from vert to a manual actually increases your speed greatly, which is how you do the bridge transfer and upper level awning challenges in the last level in this video.
      That said, there are a lot of challenges in this game that are total BS for how the physics engine, controls and trick system work, like that 525 foot rail grind in the first level. I did it before, but I don't know how I did it looking back.

    I think the giant levels is the best part of Dave Mirra 2 for me. as an arcade experience like THPS games it fails miserably, I think I always just used the unlock all levels cheat as a kid and would just spend hours cruising around and finding gaps. I also think the variety of tricks in that game was really good, I think you had to do certain directional inputs and there was different variations of these tricks too if my memory serves me right

    Hey man, you might give a try to Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX, which is made using THPS formula. If you remember, back in those days, Activision decided to capitalize on the success of the Tony Hawk series and established O2 department dedicated specifically to making extreme sports games: Mat Hoffmann's Pro BMX 1-2, Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder, and many others.
    I've beaten the first Mat Hoffman game about 10 years ago and I remember I quite liked it, however you pointed out correctly that the control over the BMX is significantly less fluid and comfortable comparing to skateboarder.

If you don't like it then you probably just suck at it. It flows really well and once you get a few of the tricks down and the timing of the grinding it's super fun! This game is amazing! it has its flaws and it can be clunky, glitchy and just brutally hard in some places. But the fun levels, fun challenges and the insanely in depth trick system (which I'm surprised you didnt talk about) makes up for it! Game has loads of replayability just like the Tony Hawk games and in my most recent play through (today) I 100% it for the first time. I have no idea why you struggled with manuals as for me I can nail them 100% of the time, and the game does tell you how to get a new bike on the loading screen it's for every 5000 respect points. neat review dude :)

Tony Hawk games are pretty easy to pick up and play, as where the Dave Mirra games need some figuring-out to be had... My first 2 games on the PS1 were THPS2 and Dave Mirra 1. So maybe for me, the second game was easier to play and figure out the mechanics of it than someone who is just picking it up for the first time.
    Luckily I played Thrasher Skate & Destroy beforehand and maybe that acquired taste made these games easier to stomach and have fun with?

    I genuinely loved this game as a kid. The controls are different than THPS type input style but if you're used to it the possibilities are limitless. Comparing to Thrasher SD at all - other than ragdoll mechanics - is kinda just rude. The playstation version is *LESS* complete than game cube? That makes Zero sense. This was an early PS2 launch game. Knocking the Woodward level is insane too - this was a groundbreaking sprawling level that brought us all to a very accurate (for the time) Camp Woodward. Not trying to be mean, but I just think to enjoy this game you need to forget THPS controls and get better at this game. You really aren't scratching the surface of the creative possibilities that work with the Mirra control scheme. Also, the bikes are SO important. You're basically reviewing the game with the lowest possible stats and missing the point of the amazing trick modification system. THPS games take like 4 hours to beat - this is more like a SIM with challenges that are actually challenging.

    To be honest, the soundtrack for this game is weak. When I was little, I probably would have liked it, but it's obvious Acclaim were all like "okay, nu metal and pop punk are popular, you gotta put it in these popular artists on major labels to appeal to the MTV crowd". It just hasnt aged well. Also, it's only ten songs so it gets repetitive very quickly.

    If a rail you're trying to jump to is off to the side of the one you're currently grinding, you simply have to lean towards it before jumping off the current rail. It blows my mind you didn't figure that out.

    • @wilaim8549
      @wilaim8549 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That works in most cases in this game except the 525 feet rail challenge, it's very unpredictable where your guy ends up landing and there is very little rail magnetism to snap into grinds meaning you have to be super precise. I put it down to them not having enough time to QA test their game before shipping.

    I used to play this game a lot back when it came out. Got it on discount from Blockbuster less than a year from the release. haha. But I too became quickly frustrated with the Career Mode. Eventually I found a cheat code online and opened all the levels to play them in Free Ride. Which made the game far more enjoyable. But the manuals and wallrides were pretty bad. Along with the geometry/physics when you would do double peg grinds was pretty weird, feebles usually worked best. The Swamp level was one of my favorites too. I still want to play a good BMX game. The Matt Hoffman's weren't bad. Had controls almost identical to the THPS engine. I just didn't find the levels that interesting.

    I love this game, but playing it when I got older and understood what to do, it is definitely clunky. Giving some commentary, level design, I disagree with, especially playing the levels in "Free Ride" (if I recall the name; equivalent of "free skate") mode. That rail challenge is infamous, and your criticisms are correct; I had no issues with the manuals in the game, though (PS2 version on the PS2). With the bikes, I remember the PS2 version saying you need "X Respect" for each respective one. You also did not do any of the competitions.
    There is a lot nostalgia clout with this game, but I feel a lot of your issues with it are that you just do not like BMX games (as said in the beginning). I also enjoy playing "ESPN X Games Skateboard 2001," so what do I know about commenting on the quality of video games... Still appreciate you playing the game, and keep up the great content.

The physics and ragdoll physics are more simulation like then thps and i like that better but like you said its waaay to clunky in almost every aspect (controls, map design, task design, etc). I later found out bmx triple x was kind of its sequel and wouldve loved to have that one more. At least theres a dumb theme going on. Dave m 2 has nothing.
