- Finally - the last series in the PS1 skate library - Thrasher presents: Skate and Destroy. I didn’t get this game until years later, and I was shocked that I missed out on this back in the day. The game is great, but does it still hold up 17 years later? Let’s check it out!

i played the crap out of this game and mastered it on expert level, deff. the best skate game of its time. so iconic and timeless the game is still fun to this day !!
Snap. Once or twice a year I will pull the dusty PlayStation out of the attic and spend a couple of hours completing it from start to finish 😀
Completely agree 1000% I still own my PlayStation 2 and have about six games for it, this is the only one I ever play👍
The cop segment might be the first 2nd person perspective in video game.
@@AfterBurnerTeirusu and it frightened me as a kid, brr
Driver did it

Zork
But for something with graphics, there's Battletoads and the Turtles in Time
I remember my older brother bringing this home when I was super young and tony hawk had just come out. I loved the two player modes, especially the one where you see who can bail the hardest. Then years later when I actually started skating and we were well into the TH series I rediscovered it and loved it for how realistic it felt. I played it until skate came out and didn't play the hawk games anymore
My older bro got this for me too, must have been one of my first PS1 titles! Such a good game, major reason why I started skating
Are those ragdoll physics in a PS1 game? Impressive for the time.
Yeah. They're a little glitchy, but very impressive.
Grim Piñata if you didn't knew. When skate 1 came out in 2007. The creators had an interview. One of the questions was " are you going to be releasing skate 1 for 6 generation consoles?" And said no because the hardware doesn't have really good specs for a game like this. Well look at this game made in 1999 for the ps1. This console is way weaker than a ps2
There was also a downport of Skate1 for... Nintendo DS of all things! It was pretty impressive to see how Skate would have looked and played on PS1 era hardware, I recommend it for novelty.
Kaffeebohnson Yeah but it didn't use ragdoll physics.
Impressive indeed. Not a lot of games had them back then. Only one that comes to mind is Road Rash 64, and then Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX a year later.
thrasher has one of the dopest soundtracks
Thrasher is how i got into oldschool hiphop lol
Thrasher is how i got into Gang Starr.
Saw DJ Premier live last year. Best concert of my life.
Thrasher is top shit for everything.
Del the funky homosapien!!
RIP Guru :'(
Supreme before it was hypebeast. Me likey.
I saw a playthrough of that game, and was surprised to see Supreme already existed back then. Apparently, it was founded in 1994.
@@jayive34 yeah no shit, it use to be a skateshop
Undanken lmfao
@@JustTooManyPuppies it still is a skate shop
@@idontwantone132 not a very great one
Thrasher was the skate game that I kept coming back to no matter how many iterations of THPS I would play. The trick system is such a game of memory that you tend to gravitate towards a collection of tricks that, in combination with your skater stats, really help to define the style of your skater.
The differences between the gnarly skaters and the tech skaters were so drastic that it almost felt like two different video games.
I've always loved this game. I always used to joke that actual skateboarding was easier.
Played this and Dave mirra freestyle bmx religiously for years until .skate..
Eternal rewind2 shit ya we did too
This brings back great memories, totally my favorite skateboarding game of the early ps1 Days. The realistic game play is still fun today. Great Review man and thank you
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
My friends all had Tony Hawk but I had Thrasher back in the day. No regrets.
I have bought this game many times: either it gets scratched or I somehow lose it. I've always said that this was my favorite skateboarding game, because of the difficulty. Skateboarding is about challenging yourself and overcoming those challenges, and that's what made this game so much fun. It's also why I enjoyed playing EA's Skate series, to me a skateboarding game NEEDS to be frustrating to a degree. It makes landing tricks that much more rewarding.
Really enjoy watching these reviews of old skate games! Takes me back the what was the golden age of gaming for me! Look forward to the next one!
I loved this game, played it through on both modes with all the skaters back in the day.
The whole approach that you could freeskate as long as you wanted to get your run in check before committing was genius.
Great review as always! You got one hell of a channel
Yeah I loved that! You can take your time and plan stuff out, or just enjoy the level for a while with no pressure. It took all the way until Tony Hawk 4 for another game to do that. Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Thank you for reviewing one of my all time favorite games. You're totally accurate about all of it. Especially planning your tricks, and long load time. I'm pretty sure it's the only game using second person perspective. Also in Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance there is a skateboarding mini game with exactly the same gameplay as Thrasher.
This is in my top five games of all time. I can pick it up and lose hours, even now. Since I've bought this game at least twice (of course I need a sealed copy of one of my favorite games!), I don't feel shady for playing on my PSP. Also, best video game soundtrack ever? Yup.
The LA River stage can be rough during your run, but I love it for just skating around without the timer. I like to jump over the parking ledge where you start, and hitting that rail with a backside noseblunt. I think you have to pop out early, though, because otherwise, you'll hit the ground too hard/fast. It's got a halfpipe too, but it's so hard to do much on the halfpipes in this game, except in the Germany level. Another favorite spot on this level is the bus. It's great to jump off that ledge, and grind down the roof of that thing. Wallrides over the huge gaps is also one reason this level rules.
The train station even has a secret area you can get to by launching off the quarter pipe in the far right corner (from where you start).
San Fran is probably my least favorite, mainly for the reasons mentioned in the video: tech skaters can't land the huge gaps and drops in this one. It's also just a one-way track, so it's hard to hang out and experiment in one spot, even in free ride mode.
Dude they put so much work into this game on a system that barely supported the capabilities they were putting in this game. It's amazing this game even loads.
I love how they have the stance icon on the screen as you play. The fact it shows if your in switch is awesome, but the fact it updates every time right away is great. Wish more games did that
This looks pretty terrific, actually. I really wanna try this!
This is the game I remember seeing at Kmart when I was like 6. I always wondered what it was. Never thought I'd find out.
I loved this game, probably still one of my favorites and it had great music. Also, the ragdolling had me as a kid and my friends laughing so hard we were crying
All the wall ride combos made this game great. best game ever
Interesting to see all the Supreme branding in that game, considering it was just a small skate shop/brand back then. Pretty cool.
I remember playing this game back when i rode boards with plastic trucks!
Great game, one of the hardest but hugely satisfying. Also the soundtrack dude... one of the best soundtrack there is!
I really like your channel!
+Samihero MLG thank you!
Samihero MLG like I LOVE😍
I still go back to this game every now and again, the sound when you wall ride is the fucking best lol
This was the most realistic and true skateboarding game ever
oh okay just found your other channel Aron, thats great that you have such an extensive history with skating. you have got some great content.
If you look at 1:45, the trick said switch 360 flip but it was actually a switch 360 inward heel!
Great review. I too think this was the best skating game, too bad they didn't continue the series. Kept playing it up until my PS2 died back in the day and switched to the xbox. Would love to play it again. Also, the soundtrack was just amazing, loved it. It was a true expression of zeitgeist that doesn't often get much recognition over games like THPS which I never enjoyed due to the easy way to just grind everything forever and beat every level without even trying, those never felt like skating to me like Thrasher did.
Forgot to mention one the best soundtracks ever! And the fact that it was made by Rockstar Games.
It was made by Z-Axis. Rockstar it's just the publisher.
Amazingly, the original promotional website for this game is still live: skateanddestroy.com
It uses flash so will probably only work on desktop.
Who's paying the bill on that every month? That's crazy.
Rockstar Games I guess.
Dude this game was super fun. Played it for years, until the disc wouldn’t read. Racking up massive slams at the riverbed was super fun. So was that wicked long hand rail and the bus drop there. Great review.
The pushing animation is amazing. Looks so casual an accurate.
if you haven't played this game you have to
My favorite skate game, so much personality. The OST is awesome too, really another line compared to THPS.
Loved this game. I used to play the demo over and over before it came out.
I think the clothing option was a reference to all the mail order skate shop catalogs from the 90s such as Union where they’d just show a basic outline/mockup of a T-shirt with the design plastered on top
Probably, ccs was the shit then too lol
Awesome review man! Totally agree with all of what you said about this classic.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
Absolutely loved Thrasher and have fond(?) memories of gripping my controller with the rage of a thousand suns because it was so hard sometimes.
I've played this game on the psx with a keyboard, it was frustrating in the begining. It was the best "realistic" skateboarding game i ever played (i have only skate 3 and tony hawk games, oh by the way skate 3 is the worst of the skate series)
Nice vid, keep it up! :D
It’s still the best skateboarding game I’ve ever played :) I am playing through it again now!
I wish it was on PS Store. 🙇
As a HUGE ea skate fan, my mind is blown by this game... The fact that an actual skateboarding simulator (like ea skate) existed in 1999 is just unreal. I was not a PlayStation kid so I've never played it.. but im am a retro gamer and collector and I plan on buying a psone and this will definitely be the first game I get for it.
I remember this was in a demo disc for psx. Did remember being a little confused without knowing the controls. Thrasher is a fine magazine but now the clothes is worn by everyone and probably where they get most money. If people really want skate to continue maybe thrasher should put their money in to help it be made
I'm still coming back to Thrasher after twenty years. I think it balances fun with realism a lot better than the Skate series. I wish it had become a series.
Hello, I am so glad that you did a review on this game! I absolutely love this video game! It got a lot of negativity when it was first released and most of my friends didn't like it, even though it was a skateboarding game. But I agree with you, I felt that it was very realistic and that is what made me fall in love with it. It is a very difficult game and it does take quite a while to get that "Feel" for the game, that you need to become good at it. But once you have it, that feeling is amazing. The game has a certain slow and speed to it that is just comfortable. I don't know how to explain it other than that LOL but it's a great day and then I appreciate you doing the review on it🤘🤘
my brother used to be obsessed with skate video games so when he wnt to college he had a big box of skate games and i saw this game and it was love at first sight. I have not played it in for ever and it was in my messy garage so i wanted to watch a review so i looked it up and i found this video and i also found my new favorite youtube channel of all time . This inspired me to dig to find it and im so glad that i did. tony hawk was fun skate was amazing and this is so freaking amazingly awesome
Thanks dude! The game is great
cool channel bro. reminds me of my skateboarding childhood/teen years. I started skating because of THPS1.
Best skateboard game ever, never been a more realistic one.
Excellent Review and awesome Logo :)
Great Job!
I LOVED this game back in the day!!!
Never knew this game exzisded until now. I was an n64 boi.
Didn't even mention the awesome soundtrack. I think I got this before THPS as it was cheaper (like only 19.99 vs 39.99) and liked the realism compared with other skating games on the PS1 at the time. I got THPS soon after, but would always go back and forth with the two games. As both games had their merits. You play one Tony H. game you've played them all, but there is only one THRASHER S&D.
Thanks for the upload!
I remember playing this in '99. Was so weird
This and cool boarders 2 were my favorite games.
this game was sorta b4 my time, i remember getting THPS1 and the next week i went to the local shop and got a world industries board w tensor trucks, and spitfire wheels lol, i rmemeber it sooo clearly, and learning tricks out in my street.. going down the driveway, i was inbstansty hooked, after playing i wanted to so skate. jus like when i got skate 1, the first 360 flip i did, scooping , flicking on the controller gave me chills n i had to skate after exploring the game some more! this was prolly us as effective in that way when it came out! best vid of an old skate game i seen .. like realness wise, and it names the tricks CORRECTLY! DEF A PLUS!
Finally managed to get a copy of this in my region for a reasonable price, looking forward to playing it after all these years. If RR approves, it’s gonna be good
Great review! Been waiting for this.
I love the game, I enjoyed it a lot.
My only complain...... you can't be goofy!! It's just a minor thing, I know, but it feels weird to me, being goofy myself.
+kennydalman I didn't notice that! Good point.
kennydalman it's a bit racist isn't it?
pretty sure Jasmin is goofy... Maybe I'm wrong. I've played this game every few months since the 90's and I still love it.
Back in the day there were more left handed person's than goofy skaters. I don't know what happened since
Bruh this was the sickest skateboarding game at the time. I'd always get hyped when White lines starts to play. Soundtrack was siick!!
I used to love this game when I was younger.
PS Classic is being delivered today, and plan to mod it with an emulator so my son can enjoy this like I used to.. (and me as well)
surprised you didn't also talk about the music in the game. used to listen to this soundtrack on my cd player back in the day.
seriously this game and fulfill the dream introduced me to some of the greatest hip hop I've ever heard
man i wish i knew about this game back then
im still playing THUG casually , and im always trying to emulate this realistic gameplay into it, but it gets boring too fast
i remember playing dave mirra freestyle BMX wishing there was a skate game similar to it
I remember plying this a long long time ago on a PS1 demo disc!
same here. jam pack demo discs
Same here. Still have the game AND the demo disk!!!
Thrasher: Skate & Destroy is something.
that loading sound means that either your disk is scratched up or your PS1 has an old degraded disk reading laser. That PS1 is ready to die.
I loved that game. Haven’t played it in forever.
Me and my friends used to hate this game at the time it came out.
We did play it after THPS1 however so that certainly changed our opinion on it, I just remember us thinking it played really poorly and the limited array of tricks just were not very inspiring especially from a bunch of guys that had only been skateboarding for 1-2 years. We often used games and videos to learn from.
Looking back on the game now though it really wasn't too shabby so i'll try and track a copy down.
Atleast then it can happily sit next to THPS1+2 and Grind Session from the PSX too.
Great video as always!
Yeah it took me a little while to get used to it, because I played it a few years late too. But once you get into it, it's a lot of fun. I really wish they kept the series going.
I could only imagine how amazing a Rockstar developed skateboarding game would be like!
I also wonder what this game might have been like if it had been made 3-4 years after it had been released, after the Gta 3 and Vice City games.
Fingers crossed they take a look at doing another in the future!
Freshest BS Flips in skategame history. Loved this to bits!
best skateboard game ever
ronnie dobbs try playing thps 2 and 3, skate 2 and 3, then come back and rethink your decision.
i was too young and hyper when this game came out and luckily THPS wasn't far away and the rest was history. I've been wanting to to try this out again.
so sick. love this review
I used to play this game so much. I don't remember exactly offhand, but something like if you press all the top buttons at the same time you would bail. I would spend houuuurs intentionally trying to set up the most devastating bail to send that ragdoll flying.
Just ordered this game!! Can’t wait to fu**in play it🤘🏽
The soundtrack is amazing!!
OG Rockstar soundtrack; this is a masterpiece.
Thanks for show me this great game
I had tyhis before thps and absolutely loved it. Damn, it was a tough one to crack but wow, what a game.
Best skate game ever it got me into skating. and sick sountrack too
This was the best skating game I have ever played in my life
The soundtrack in this game is 🔥🔥🔥
BEST SKATEBOARDING GAME EVER PERIOD! =)
I discovered this gem soooooo many years ago, maybe in 2000-01, and I find myself always coming back to it.
I just love the esthetics of this game. the slow heelflip, the fact that you can only nollie hardflip or bs flip with cyrus (at least I believe that's true) and the awesome music. well... it's the best skateboarding game ever :P
I downloaded a PSX Emulated and beat this game 3-4+ times on my MacBook a few years back. Holy fuck! Skate and Destroy is a strong contender for the best skateboarding game of all time. I need to buckle down and get a PS1 version at some point, but I've had a devil of a time finding that shit.
Still own it and still play it, always found it weird you get a shoe sponsor first and a shop sponsor last though
It's a great game but has the most awkward looking bails their legs go threw thier head and has an odd looking seizure and no skater moves thier arms that much while grinding or about to fall lol. The best option is to play it on a slim ps2 I own and play it a few times a week helps stimulate my brain better than any other game because the difficulty. You can also skateboard in the game Bully for ps2 but has to be unlocked.
I was surprised to see ragdoll physics. Here I thought that wasn't a thing until the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox era.
Yo thos 180s at 1:25 are so satisfying
I don't know if you have ever done this, But have you ever skated realistically in any of the Tony hawk games cuz it's better then button mashing. oh btw, nice detailed review
+Mr. Lakersfan I have! I used to make a game out of it. I have a review of thps2 coming out soon where I talk about some of the realistic stuff I used to do.
Rad Rat Video ok 😃
Jersey Boi skating realistically is so much better! Like hitting the love park gao. That is one of the best obstacles in the entire series
Never had the loading problem with mine. I own 2 copies and it's pretty decent. May just be the ps1? Love this game. Just got it recently as I've only played it in demos back in the day. So much fun. Cant put it down.
the coolest wallride
I literally just woke up with a few kids being so loud at 8am outside my window; 2months ago. IMMEDIATELY the thought of my nights spent locked up in my room, 13yrs old. never mind homework, whole 7th grade year was this game. I was in love with its realistic gameplay over thps's arcade style.. since that morning, I bought PlayStation & Resident evil 1&2, and this. its providing the pleasure of my youth. Yet, trying to see its graphics as if it's the pinnacle is impossible... loading is a joke tho
Your channel's sick. Subbed
+otto maddox thanks!
Still have it still love it
wow i need this game, the tricking system sounds fun af.
its incredible. Makes you work to land tricks and put together runs. you can play/skate with a personal style in this game no two folks play it the same way. its so good. really thinking of starting some kind of league or contest to bring this back from the dead.
Awesome game, definitely something wrong with your disc...it doesn't sound like that at all on my OG Playstation and load times are 15 secs.
Loved this game, thanks :)
This is basically Skate during the PS1 era.
My favorite video game ever
One of my favorite ps1 game😍
I loved this game.
NO CLUE when was the last time I played a TH or SKATE game
but I DO KNOW I played through thrasher last year with every character =)
and how much I love the soundtrack! Award Tour FTW
