- Grumman TBF Avenger was a torpedo bomber developed initially for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several air or naval arms around the world. It entered U.S. service in 1942, and first saw action during the Battle of Midway.
Grumman's first torpedo bomber was the heaviest single-engine aircraft of World War II, and only the USAAF's P-47 Thunderbolt came close to equalling it in maximum loaded weight among all single-engined fighters, only being some 181 kg lighter than the TBF, by the end of World War II. The Avenger was the first design to feature a new wing-folding mechanism created by Grumman, intended to maximize storage space on an aircraft carrier; the F4F-4 and later models of Wildcat received a similar folding wing and the F6F Hellcat employed this mechanism as well. The engine used was the Wright R-2600-20. There were three crew members: pilot, turret gunner and radioman/bombardier/ventral gunner. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
My father in law flew the Avenger off carriers for the Royal Navy. He liked them especially their slow running radial engine. Whilst flying an Avenger he was awarded his DSC for attacking a German U boat and support ship in a Norwegian fiord.
I believe the Nimitz museum had one when I was there. I was amazed at how big it was for a carrier aircraft. Big as a semi.
@pianomansas The one that Bush flew is under water near Chi Chi Jima in the Pacific. What you saw was a TBM painted to look like what he flew in WWII.
Very impressive folding of the wings.
Grumman planes are legendary (I love the ace-maker F6F Hellcat).
It always used to make me laugh that they would fly these massive things off of tiny little escort carriers until I realized they were the ONLY F***ING TORPEDO BOMBERS THE NAVY HAD.
Only if there was enough wind to produce air-speed..haha “sorry we can’t attack today ..it’s not windy enough..call tomorrow “
Way better than the TBD flying coffins.
Very nice General Motors TBM-1C. My uncle flew the Grumman TBF-1C and 1D in the Atlantic during WWII, painted just like this TBM in the vid.
Great video, great display. It's difficult to figure though, with all today's electronic advance how was it possible to fight a world war in such airplanes, then you come to realize that's part of their grandiosity, both the pilots' and the planes', and that feeling of awe is so much bigger when you look at the Great War's ones.
Well, aside from being an Avenger, It is painted in the Atlantic theatre of operations scheme while the late George Bush flew a variant that carried the, then standard, three tone Pacific scheme.
Very nice. That's a whole lot a airplane for one engine!
And it's a whole lot of engine too, did you see how big the propeller is compared to the pilot and the fellow on the ground?
why do airshow producer feels the need to play corny music and have announcers blabbering?? Really takes away the experience. I want to hear the aircraft
as far as corny music goes, i can't say. announcers blabbering are telling the attendant spectators about the aircraft the are watching. the quality of the blabbering can vary, but that's why. if you're referring to why the audio was captured in the video, i bet it's because the person operating the camera had a microphone on.
@mrbdguard Yeah its a TBM-3e but very similar to the TBF which was powered by the Wright Cyclone R2600-8. We have 4 TBF-1 Avengers here in New Zealand, three in Museums and one derelict. I was involved with the RNZAF Museum example and even got to ground run her in the early 1980s
He lost his crew because the tunnel and ball turret gunner position was a hard position to escape from in a Grumann Avenger. The pilot simply had to flip back his canopy and jump out, the other two had to make their way down to the tunnel door and jump out. Please try telling the truth next time
atiboyful
There are several planes in this video
My father was a crew member on this plane. he survived the war and was able to come back to America and be a honest and great father and I will chat
@lookatmySB I think thats a Beech not an Anson
The one that George Bush Flew is at the American Air power Museum on Long Island! It has his signature on it too! I just saw it yesterday they don't fly it a lot but it is airworthy!
Really? I thought the one Lt. Bush flew was shot down.
@Gromit801 He didn't just fly one I can assure you that the one he flew is here!
...WHERE WAS THIS AT???
@acepilot1997 Forgive them, they knew not what they did.
I TRAINED AT FORT LAUDERDALE JOHN USN
U-boats view of a TBM lol
@proukraine AT6 ; Electra (not sure. maybe avro anson) ; Avenger ; hercules
Want to talk about big off a carrier, check out the A-3D skywarrior, my old outfit, heavy attack squadron four flew off the small Essex class attack carriers, CVA’s 14,19,31, and 34, 3 plane detachments on each, they called the plane “the Whale’, all the deck crews on these carriers had to hear was “whale in the groove” and man did they pay attention to business. Check out u tube Jet bombers go to sea!
Nothing like the Avenger GB flew. The shown plane has an Atlantic A/S color scheme. I am sick of every TBF article swooning over the fact that GB flew an Avenger in WWII. He lost his crew for cripes sake. May not have been his fault, we have only his word, but if I were him I would never want it mentioned.
What did you do in the war, Daddy? "May not have been his fault, we have only his word, but if I were him I would never want it mentioned. " Really? And we only have your word as to who your father was.
Bush said he chose the Avenger because it was the largest airplane on the carrier.
Wow, I hadn't thought there would have been any Bamboo Bombers flying any more? But it's way past due the Confederate Air Force chose a better name.
And drowned one of his crew. Whatta man.
Engine is from T-6 Texan :/
The Texan was powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-1340. The Avenger used the much larger and more powerful Wright R-2600 which is nearly double the size. The number indicates displacement in cubic inches.

all lost the focus..I believe wath this video is for aviation ,and not for politic disease..
in spite of bush that is a beauthifull plane.
I wish that sub never picked GHWB, then we wouldn't of had god awful GWB...
Too bad your parents never met...
EARGASM!!!!! woo hoo!!!!
Nice AVENGER but paint scheme is not accurate
There were many paint schemes. Gray and white is the Atlantic scheme, where the Avenger was used for anti-submarine warfare.
I am,much honor,tank you sheep heheh
"May not have been his fault..." Just what does that mean, fool?
Bush was a coward.
+Cowboycomando54 you mean bush junior?
