  • Hawker Hurricane is a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was designed and predominantly built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Although largely overshadowed by the Supermarine Spitfire, the aircraft became renowned during the Battle of Britain, accounting for 60% of the RAF's air victories in the battle, and served in all the major theatres of the Second World War.
    Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and many other Allied countries throughout the Second World War. The Spitfire continued to be used into the 1950s both as a front line fighter and in secondary roles. It was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft and was the only Allied fighter in production throughout the war.

    My Dad was in the AFC and then the RAF during the second world war in which he flew Hurricanes and Spitfires, he always told me not to believe what I heard about Spitfires saving the day during the war as it was the Hurricane that saved us, my Dad said that when he flew Spits in action it would take the best part of half an hour or more sometimes to re-fuel and re-arm one, whereas when he flew the Hurricane the turnaround time was ten to fifteen minutes.

    Nice video.. thank you.
    The Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane are all 3..flying memorials to the 1000's who lost their lives.
    My uncle, a Lanc pilot - 100 squadron, was killed returning from a mission, February 15th 1943.
    RIP all who gave their tomorrow's so that we may live ours.

    If you were in any way associated with the United Kingdom either by birth or other means you cannot help get a lump in your throat when seeing and hearing these aircraft, they were truly 'the few' and thank god they didnt give up.

    Lightowler says it all! The hawker and Avro are sweet but I'm obsessed with the spit. The noise of the super marine is just awesome. Also the spit is the best looking lol

    I view the Spitfire and the Hurricane as being perfect complimentary aircraft during the Battle of Britain.
    The Hurricane was tough and sturdy and made an excellent gun platform when going after the bombers - although it did score some notable successes against the Bf 109E4 when flown by a skilled pilot.
    The Spitfire Mk1 was the equal overall of the Bf 109E4 - a much needed asset that won the battle.

    Thanks for posting. I used to go every year to the Friendly Foes airshow in Niagara and I always had a great time. It is a shame Russell doesn't put the show on any more. Last I heard he had sold the Spit and was selling the 109 and the Hurricane. :(

    Thanks for posting. I used to attend this airshow most years at the Russell airfield. Loved how informal it was and how close you could get. Not the big crush of some of the other shows. If you guys look closely at the very end you'll see the original 109 with a bad dent in the wing. The pilot clipped a flagpole on takeoff but was able to recover the plane.

    I wonder how it was in 1941, in the skies of Britain. The sound of thousands of aircraft fighting, German aggressors facing the just fury of the British combatants. It would certainly give me the creeps, not of fear, but of proud to have these brave men fighting for me and for Freedom. Greetings to the brave pilots of RAF in Second World War.

    Its absolutely correct to call it the Battle of Britain. There were numerous battles over Scotland and even some raids to Northern Ireland. Squadrons 602 and 603 were scottish squadrons. Germans often use England as a synonym for Britain just as the British call the Neatherlands, Holland. Nothing to do with PC.

    It was called the Battle of Britain because that is what Churchill dubbed it at the time. "…the Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin."[
    Britain comprises England, Scotland, Wales (and part of Ireland) all of which were under one Government at the time. This is not PC but geopolitical fact.

    The biggest issue for the Merlin engine in these aircraft was the carburetor. It restricted the types of manoeuvers that could be employed. On the other hand, the Bf109 was handicapped by it's leading edge slats which tended to deploy at inopportune moments to interfere with the pilots gunnery. As such it was a tossup as to which was better but if the measure is of lead on target the British fighters were better gun platforms and ultimately had the advantage of being closer to home.

  • @TheWierdFish
    @TheWierdFish 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I imagine by the 'Niagra Falls' painted on the fire engine, this was in the Americas? That would make this the 'other' Lancaster, as opposed to the only other flyer, PA474 whom we know and love in Britain as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flagship. Nice to see a Lancaster that isn't PA474, to know that ours isn't the only one. Must be lonesome for the poor old thing.
    What a treat it would be to ship that one over here and have two Lancasters in formation over Dover!

    It was vital for Germany to secure air supremacy to enable a seaborne invasion fleet. It would have worked had they won the Battle of Britain as they could then have bombed the crap out of the Royal Navy that would have opposed an invasion fleet. It was vital for Britain to prevent the Germans from achieving this. It is what represented victory for us.

  • @pramboy09

    @williamblair11 the hurricane was a very good gun platform and far more forgiving in take off and landing with it's wide undercarriage but that is where it's advantages end. The hurricane by 1941 was outclassed purly as a fighter hence why it went to ground attack. the spitfire had far more development potential which was proven wth the amount of different mks that served thoughout the war

    Actually you will find that German bombers targeted air bases and cities up and down the East coast of Great Britain stretching into Scotland. You will also find that the Battle of Britain was fought in Wales as well. Therefore it was the Battle of BRITAIN and not simple just England.

    The bf109 was technically superior, the hurricane mentally broke luftwaffer not because of it's superiority but because it was tough. The British pilots loved the hurry because it could take beating and protect the pilots.

    I have watched --2-- documentaries on TV, over the last ten years, where a large team of -military historians and tacticians, using all available data, and aided by modern computers, to work out an agreeable likely outcome, to the Nazi attack on Britain. In both programmes, the result would have been--A disaster for the Germans. The Royal Navy WOULD have destroyed too many landing craft & ships . Hitler would not commit enough effort. Oh--and, the team was international, with several Germans.

    Nothing wrong with the translation dude it’s accurate, the battle took place over england, the germans wanted to invade england. the english call it the battle for britain for "PC" reasons, nothing more, it ain't historically correct to call it the battle for britain. the germans call it the "air battle for england", I know this, I have studied in germany. In fact, many other european nations teaches it the same. Accept it and move on.

  • @EJLSWE
    @EJLSWE 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's like british english, no such thing, the english speak english with english accents and dialects, if you want to be specific you would say "english english". england > english people > english languge > english accents and dialects, same principle yes? logical. do not expect other peole to adhere to your "PC" / social engineering shite , this is not to offend you, just pointing it out to you. I have learnt "english english" in school, others may learn american english.
