  • Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps' expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing's design that they ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances.
The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force based at Thorpe Abbotts airfield in England and the Fifteenth Air Force based in Italy complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord.[4] The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields.
From its pre-war inception, the USAAC (later USAAF) touted the aircraft as a strategic weapon; it was a potent, high-flying, long-range bomber that was able to defend itself, and to return home despite extensive battle damage. It quickly took on mythic proportions, and widely circulated stories and photos of B-17s surviving battle damage increased its iconic status. With a service ceiling greater than any of its Allied contemporaries, the B-17 established itself as an effective weapons system, dropping more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II. Of the 1.5 million metric tons of bombs dropped on Germany by U.S. aircraft, 640,000 tons were dropped from B-17s.

In 1992 I was working in NYC and had an office that looked right out on to the Hudson River in lower Manhattan. I usually could see all the river traffic. One day, what sounded like and old truck going by, I looked up and there was a B-17 flying by and a few feet off the water heading up river. It looked in rough shape and was in WWII khaki color. It still was an amazing sight. A wonderful old plane.

I know how you feel I love those old bombers, they're majestic, and outright gorgeous. These planes create such an emotional appeal to me. I really respect their crews, and how many risked their lives.

It is a shame that there are only a few left flying.
The B-17 helped save the world.
They were and still are beautiful planes.
I would love to go up in one.

My father was a tail gunner in one of these things in Europe, he died 10 years ago.
I could never get him to talk about the war.

For those that have been asking, that is "The Movie" Memphis Belle (look for the tiny lettering) as the real plane is still undergoing restoration. The promotional film documenting the crew was shot in color and is still an interesting documentary.

    Q. What do the red and yellow stars painted above the bombs on the side of the plane signify?
    A. The red and yellow stars, painted above the bombs for each mission flown, represent the missions where the "Belle" lead her bomb group, yellow stars, and when she lead the whole bomb wing, red stars.

memphis belle had some kind of unnatural luck in WWII, she is still alive and kicking that's what's so special about this plane. however, it will cost you millions to maintain her. if i ever have enough money to have and maintain a B17 i will own one.

Memphis Belle was a real aircraft, made famous by a good black and white promotional film in the forties. Most airworthy aircraft of that vintage are by now totally unoriginal, as worn out bits get replaced. But the artwork gets copied onto rebuilds, to keep the legend alive. Hard to understand the scale of WW2, but think of 50,000 aircrew that died in the few miles of sea between England and France.... there's an awful lot of wreckage out there, some still occupied. War isn't romantic at all.

These planes dont seem to leap of the runway at these airshows considering how much lighter they are without a full load of fuel, ordanace and crew.

My dad was chin gunner in the B-17G. When he got his gunnery training in Kingman Arizona he got his private pilots license as he finished his gunnery training. He had friends die and did not want to talk about it and no guns in the house and no watching war on TV. for us kids. My dad taught us kids what is on our coins and pledge, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE NATION UNDER GOD (King Jesus). Jesus is returning very soon (see youtube blood moons and Shemitah , 911 was on a Shemitah) so repent of your sin, stop sinning, be holy, accept Jesus as your LORD (do God's will) and accept the death of Jesus on the cross as the sacrifice to have your sins forgiven, read the Bible to know and obey Jesus=heaven. If you refuse God's ticket to heaven, you only get hell fire for eternity. See youtube heaven and hell stories of people who did and God sent them back to tell the world heaven and hell are real. God says NO sin to enter heaven so you must accept the blood sacrifice of Jesus to be forgiven. If God allowed sin in heaven, heaven would end up like hell. REPENT WHILE THERE IS TIME. See youtube for evidence of the Bible. You have been warned so 100 years from now and you are in hell fire for eternity, do not blame God or me.
