The Dauntless had the most beautiful lines of any US Navy aircraft of WWII and some of the prettiest of any aircraft of the war. And it was the Dauntless which turned the tide of the war in the Pacific at the Battle of Midway.

Probably the most consequential aircraft of the Pacific Theater, other than the B-29.
Certainly the most consequential naval aircraft.

🎏🎏 It was so cool to hear the engines. THANK YOU. The Dauntless has such a pea shooter quality to the sound of the engine. Boy, that Avenger smoked a lot. Great filming. This museum is on the bucket list.

I love the SBD. It's such a pretty little bird. Of all the model planes I built as a child the 1/48th scale Monogram kit of the Dauntless was one of my favorites. I never cared much for its replacement, the Curtis Helldiver, big, ugly thing that it was. The Dauntless inspired my imagination, like the Corsair.

Cried like a baby the first time i saw a dauntless fly....my dad was a tailseat gunner with VS-8 and got an air medal in the battle of santa cruz islands....oct. 26 1942...his carrier the ''Hornet'' was sunk that day as well...

The Dauntlas sunk more enemy shipping in WWII than any other weapon system. A shame so few are left to look at, and see fly.

There's just something about the Dauntless SBD (Slow But Deadly) and it's special perforated airbrakes that gives it a nice aesthetic. The pilots all said it was a delightful plane to fly and was very robust and reliable. The one recovered from Lake Michigan was a Midway veteran with 260 bullet holes in it after 4 Zeros tried shooting it down during it's dive. It got the pilot and wounded gunner back to safety crash landing on Midway.

That was a totally awesome video! Perfect footage. These old birds have seen many generations come and go, and they will fly on long after were all gone. That radial and V12 sound forever immortalized

The Dauntless is seen at the beginning of the video, starts up at 3:25 or so then flies, and is seen landing at the end. There is indeed footage of the Avenger along with the Mustang, the PT-17 and the DR1, but I featured the Dauntless since the other aircraft are here all the time.

Didn't know that there was a flying air museum in Virginia Beach. Hope that they are still open and flying being it 11 years after this video.

They are still open and flying. Next weekend are Fokker Triplane replicas, and the week after, a Hurricane and a Spitfire.

I saw her at World War II weekend in PA a few years ago. She was flying during the Corsair v. Val duel. The Val got away, so the SBD got on his tail and "nailed" him! I almost got to take a ride in her, but the clouds closed in and they grounded her :(
