Arthur Wright & Son Spearpoint; a classic Boy's Knife!

  • Salutations Ladies and Gentlemen! Today, I'll be discussing a classic Spearpoint or 'Boy's Knife'. This model seems to be older, due to it's stamp. The blade is C70 carbon steel, along with the spring. Speaking of which, this is an old-school A. Wright pull. (9-10) Nickel-silver bolsters, brass pins and liners. Rosewood handles.
This piece is far from perfect, but makes for a solid user knife, particularly at a price of less than 60 CAD!
I bought this knife at SteelCityCutlery.com a store with excellent customer service and swift shipping speed!

As someone from the UK may I thank you for showcasing our knife makers, very valid points and honest evaluation ,also agree with the fact a strong pull makes up for us not being able to carry lock backs which I did prefer when they were legal, nice to see the brief cameo by pussycat. 😁

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I felt like I did a poor job of articulating my points, but your comment put my mind at rest.
      Cheers!

There a nice pattern for gutting trout and skinning rabbits and general use , my Arthur Wright has quality issues so much so I thought they sold only seconds quality here in Australia , I have other wrights with problems , although I would buy again in future

It is my idea of a proper no nonsense traditional Sheffield pocketknife! Thanks for showing it 👍

Nice little knife, that spring tension would be too much for me, especially on a nail nick blade,!
Thanks for showing us this one,,
ps, my MM Ergonomic, finally arrived, (7weeks) and it's just about perfect, 😊,,
My only disappointment, is the lack of communication with Michael, I emailed him a few times with little response, I asked twice, if I could collect it in person, (just over an hours drive), and on the only reply he made, he said no problem, he'd let me know when it was due to be finished,, a week or so later, it just turned up in the mail, without any warning,,
Anyway, I'm happy with the knife, especially the bog oak,, just sad that I didn't get to meet Michael, and check out his workshop, 😢,, cheers,, John.

Glad you enjoyed! And I'm even happier that your knife arrived! Michael's communication is well...in much need of improvement, but I can forgive it because of his lovely knives.
I too, would like to meet Michael in person and explore the workshop, but I'm not so lucky to be an hour away!
The Bog Oak he uses is my favourite. It starts out smooth, but becomes a little textured as the grain rises to the surface over time. (This can be 'reversed' if you prefer it smooth) But it's colour and look with the brass is just...perfect.
Either way, I'm happy you like your knife, and I agree that Michael needs an active "secretary" to help with his Emails!
      Cheers!

They say a picture /video, is worth a thousand words, but nothing prepared me for how this knife feels in my hand, it is simply amazing, the name Ergonomic, is absolutely perfect for this knife, 😍,,,
      All the best my friend,,

@@John..18 For future reference John, keep an eye on the Cyclaire knives website. They have been selling MM's for a while now. They currently have some Cherry Ergonomics in stock and did have Bog Oak ones but they sold out fairly quickly.
It is also a little bit cheaper to buy from Cyclaire because their postage is only half what Michael charges. And yes, I've also had emails ignored by him.
Unfortunately for our friend the Raven Cyclaire don't ship overseas. 😢

Heinnie Haynes are selling MM knives too ,, the knife is great, but I really wanted to meet Michael and collect it myself,, 😢. at least I've got a "custom" that will almost certainly last my lifetime,, cheers,,

Brilliant video as always mate. This is one of my favourite patterns. Tom over at knife delights just did a video on them. I feel like i need to show some brother and get involved 😂.
I like it when you compared the cost and feel sometimes people forget to throw that in. As lets be honest price is a massive factor when judging a knife and selecting a knife.
My rosewood A. Wright has had alot of pocket time. Hope you enjoy yours mate!

Glad to see you stop by!
I remembered a short of yours that showcased an A. Wright Spearpoint...you should really do a full review on it!
The Boy's Knife is perhaps (to me) the epitome of "the classic pocket knife". I really enjoy them.
As for price, I think many people judge knives too harshly, (or sometimes not harsh enough) since they don't bring price forward as a worthy factor!
Either way, I enjoy this knife despite it's flaws, so I'll probably be carrying it quite a lot, too!
      Cheers as always!

I don't have this particular knife but do have the TEW basic equivalent and that too is a very able work knife considering it only cost me £25-50. They have very recently increased in price though but are available from The Bakewell Cookshop for £27-25.
Incidentally, that tang stamp is still in use as it is on a Stag Tackler that I received only last Saturday and that was certainly not old stock as I had to wait for it to be made.

I've seen the TEW basic version, quite a nice little piece!
What I wasn't aware of was the use of the "full" stamp anymore. I better ask someone like Slick or Paddy, as they'll probably know more than I, but I was under the impression that stamp was retired! Interesting, indeed...
      Either way, cheers!
