- I know this song! One of my favorite blues songs covered by one of my favorite a cappella basses, Geoff Castellucci. When you all recommended this onto my list, I knew it had to happen. The original by Bill Withers won itself a grammy, and you can see why. Let's dive in and melt with an analysis of "Ain't No Sunshine."
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Geoff Castellucci cover "Ain't No Sunshine" for the first time.

Think you might be off on the Rat Poison quote...
Seems like the song is about a Woman, but as the Analogy suggests SHE is a Drug that we are addicted to, knowing SHE is terrible for us, but still being Drawn to it... SHE is the Rat Poison.
I think they were trying to point out it isn't "We love her and Miss her" but "We need her, despite what SHE is."

Hello. Could you change a little on the videos you post? now many videos look a little too similar to each other and they get a little boring.
Please review Coheed and Cambria
Welcome Home or Mother Superior
I'm 50 years old, and I just realized that my life is better when I can giggle at someone else's giggling, and Elizabeth delivers superb giggles.
#spoiledbygigglebeth 👍
Me too I love watching her, then at other times she really annoys me for being so charismatic 😜
Mostly annoying....
Her giggles are the best!
She had a proper eargasm!
As another suggested, Geoff and Elizabeth should record a song together. The contrast between their voices would be great to hear.
Agreed!
Yes! They would be SO good together!
Please please please! I'd love for this to happen!
No point in doing that. She would just dehydrate from squirting!..
I concur
I’m 71 years old and finally figured out that when I grow up, I want to be like Geoff C. or Tim Foust! Not much runway left but the dream is still there!
This man is always the best. A incredible talent. Before knowing him and his voice and repertoire I thought: "there' s no singers I like anymore and nobody knows how to sing my old songs; music
really died", but after I saw him on Internet I got very happy again and said to me myself: "I found a new idol, a real talented artist!!!" Long Life, Geoff Castellucci!!!
"That is not normal, people!" Possibly my favorite of her reactions, ever.
We know Goeff has a 5 octive range. This isn't surprising at this point. But can we just take a second to acknowledge that this man, at 14:55 hit 3 of the 5 in essentially a single line.
Oh, when you said his voice fell off the cliff my inner ear felt it, wow
Without fail, Geoff’s voice gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. It’s so open, smooth and creamy I just get chills every time. Especially in those low low notes.
I've listened to this song for years, thinking it was about a man who had lost the love of his life. Thank you for the background of this song. As a recovering alcoholic it now takes on a different and even more special meaning.
Every single Geoff song is my new favorite, it's almost an embarrasment of riches the talent he has!
Everytime there is Geoff video on Elizabeth's channel, I know to expect greatness, and also giggles and squeaks. In other words: joy. And they never disappoint !
Thanks a million, Jean! ❤
I was giggling and tearful right along with you girl. Geoff's voice has the same effect on me. I find his talent astonishing. One moment I'm in sheer amazement. The next, I'm feeling bewildered. Other moments I find myself gasping; and others giggling. I am transfixed. His ability to reach those very low subharmonic tones is not just a gimmick. He's got a beautiful voice, a very impressive range, amazing tonal quality, and tremendous control. I love this guy!
I always enjoy your careful analysis of Geoff's work, but the Geoff giggles are always my favorite part!
Happy Mommyhood!
I love how Elizabeth smiles & giggles when Geoff sings a particularly delicious low bass note. I love Elizabeth's voice too and it would amazing to have her sing a duet with Geoff. Of course Geoff is my fav bass singer, bar NONE.
I, too, appreciate the symmetry of his arrangement, with how he ended with the same bluesy soulful humming riff he used at the beginning.
I so love what Geoff did with this cover and made it his own. His voice is so beautiful here. I can listen to it over and over again. Awesome reaction and analysis.
Geoff's version is haunting and you can hear the pain in his voice as well as see him. He is a good actor as well. I also think you and Geoff should do a cool song together as well.
Was going to comment this exact thing. Just an amazing artist.
I've been following for a little over a year now and I have found myself listening to music with a totally different perspective. Each time I hear a song I "analyze" the different backgrounds, layers, etc. It has ven made my favorites from the mid 70's to the late 80's more enjoyable. . . . . .Thank You for the enjoyable insight.
Your reactions bring me such joy and I love how much you truly appreciate and geek out about VoicePlay's incredible talent (and Geoffs solo stuff too). More VoicePlay analysis pleaaaase!
Well, maybe there weren't no sunshine before, but all that changed when Elizabeth showed up! 🌞
G and E have a pretty electric act going (see what I did there?): he does amazing things with his voice which in turn, causes her to do amazing things with her face!
As somber as this song is, I predict the analysis will be exceptionally joyful! Can't wait!
For the next video I have to try to comment in more detail... There can't be just one! ;)
CU in marvelous Miss Elizabeth's Charismatic Monday Premiere
@@joergojschaefer3521 Looking forward to it!
You are having absolute gigglegasms! I always love your reactions. Geoff is so insanely talented and sooooooo good in this cover!
I think we are all as enthralled with Elizabeth as we are with any of the artists in the videos she reacts to.
She glows with her enthusiasm , a spark in an otherwise generic reaction video category , with others just making OMG faces and click bait thumbnails !
Elizabeth and Rick Beato give the most technical and enthusiastic reactions to songs on TH-cam !
@@martinbrotherton5153 Yes, they both stand apart from the rest of the reaction pack.
Great...I'm a 46 year old straight man, and now I'M pregnant! Damn you Geoff!!
You got the BEST giggle! When the music tickles you in a way that is spiritual and can not ever be physical...LOVE THE GIGGLE!
Geoff is one of very few people who covers several octaves and can do it with grades but he also brings extra depth s great talent and has a way of finding it all together in mixtures that are ear candy to the soul. Jeff is very talented for his age and brings new depth to base baritone tenor and I'd say he even does some Alto from time to time in his harmonizing what wonderful voice that brings Great Joy to the World and to all that listen to him I have had people that I've turned on to Geoff find his style of singing very very enlightening and brings kind of an old soul if you will to the music he is a very talented young man and he has a way of putting things together that no one else has thought of and that is what makes Geoff so special. The day I run across Jeff's music was one of the best days in my life because he brought so much joy and Beauty to the music he sings What a talented young man he is.
In my lifetime I have come across another gentleman that was able to do several octaves and bring a style to his music that none other could try and to duplicate I think God gives us the special people to show us what blessing our voices can be and I am so grateful to these to Jeff and the other gentleman in my life that I've come across that enlightened my soul keep enlightening our souls Geoff
When this first came out the emotions and the soul in this cover threw me for a loop and I couldn't see the beauty of it that everyone was talking about, so I'm so glad to get Elizabeth's analysis of this and especially all the giggling because it gives the whole thing a totally different and uplifting feeling.
What is not to love about this? Geoff Castellucci, great song, Elizabeth's reactions... and yeah, I reckon you two should sing something together too.
You are so cute when you giggle & get excited. That gives your reviews so very much charm. This is an amazing production & they gave proper nods to the original while being very original with the interpretation.
Already so excited about it! Geoff's videos and you are the perfect duo! 😄
One of my favorite parts of this arrangement is the slow clock ticking in the background. It really gives a sense of how time is dragging when “she” is gone.
Elizabeth, you are a gigglebox and I love it! Your reactions are priceless! I can tell the pregnancy is bringing more of your emotions out and it is wonderful. I love G C and your reactions are the best. Best of luck with the Kiddo!!!
Watching you smile and giggle over Geoff's amazing voice really makes me smile after a long day.
Great analysis of both voice and production. As usual, Elizabeth's wonderful nerdiness comes to the fore as she explores the fine technical nuances of how Jeff uses his amazing voice and how he and his production team have built upon that to create vocal magic. Elizabeth's reaction really enhanced my appreciation of the video and everything that went into it.
I know why you giggle and where it giggle, even I feel that… what a voice! What a tone! 👍🏻❤️
Geoff never fails to give me goosebumps! Love this cover
I think this is Delivery Day(May 23rd), the day the baby gets his eviction notice. Congratulations Elizabeth and Kirk. All the best.
Thank you very much! ❤
Elizabeth, you're looking great! So happy for you.
I have been waiting with great anticipation for your reaction to this particular song from Geoff. If you aren't my absolute favorite reactor, you are definitely one of them. I love his arrangement. I also love your analysis! Thank you!
As many others have noted, your absolute love of music and the joy you feel listening to it is infectious and it makes me happy just to see others who feel the same level of joy I feel when listening. Geoff has become my favorite bass singer. I think mainly due to how nimble his voice is. He is able to enunciate so clearly and quickly even on the lowest notes. It's astounding. His range is mind blowing but it's that ability to dive in to sub harmonics and retain the ability to acrobatically sling words....incredible.
I love the phrase "ear candy" :) Another thing to love in your reactions, Elizabeth, as well as in Geoff's cover and amazing vocal abilities.
knew this would bring on the signature Elizabeth giggle! even as someone who knows nothing about music I find this interesting- love the reaction ❤️🏴
Anytime Elizabeth starts giggling inside of a minute, you KNOW it's going to be a great reaction!
His voice sounds so great in all the registers!
Accepting that Geoff has a very unusual vocal rangeand has done this for quite some time; I expect him to do strange and wonderful things with his voice, so I appreciate your ability to explain the delights that he is giving us. His skills are far beyond those of many who sing especially me and it is a fantastic thing to hear him !!!!
I love how giddy Elizabeth gets while she's listening to this beautiful song.
I love that you can almost always tell when Geoff is about to hit a low note because he raises his right hand and drops it down
It's almost like his hand controls his voice. 🤣I've only seen one video where he isn't gesturing. I forget which song but it's old enough his hair is short, and they're singing outdoors -- Denver, I think. Maybe during the Sing-Off tour? Florida boy must have been cold to have his hands in his pockets while singing.
@@shirleykarr3554 I don't recall him moving his hand in the Misty Mountains song. That's the only one I can think of.
Yall are forgetting every time VoicePlay gets kidnapped, resulting in gratuitous head bobbing because he can't move his hands
@@shirleykarr3554 Rains of Castamere. Lead Geoff had to keep his hands still due to the character he was portraying
I love how he uses the bass to evoke emotion in this one. It's the exact opposite of my other favorite from him, "High and Dry" where he uses his upper range to do that. If you haven't reacted to that one I'd definitely recommend it as it's amazing like this one and he hits some crazy high notes! Also, I'm sure you've got folks requesting "Enemy" and gotta say, I hope you get to that one but it'll be a long video. For how much VoicePlay usually has going on in any arrangement, they really leveled up for that one. You almost can't process it all, lol
Withers himself would have LOVED this. The arrangement on this is absolutely sublime.
Doubt that
@@godslayer1415 why?
Mr Withers singing this song which he wrote for his own reasons is something unassailable. The stutter and repeating "I know" is fascinating. Even so, I think that the songwriter would love that the work continues to be performed, particularly by Mr. Castellucci.
That’s a great reversing of the elements. It’s an expansion-and-contraction that signals the fluctuation and chronicity of the subject. He starts at this baseline, sinks into a depressed longing, and returns to the beginning, as if to start the trip over again. Really drives in that concept of addiction.
I adore how his voice just PURRS. His tenor notes, he sounds like a whole other person practically! And I agree with 1973Grejluder! I'd love to hear you and Geoff collaborate!
Also: GEZUNDHEIT! Good sneeze!
I need "oh ummmm...that is really delightful" with some sort of hash tag Castelluci, on a sweater now.
Love this channel and the commentary - increases the appreciation for the musician’s talent.
Elizabeth and the Geoff Earthquake Eargasm! Lets get ready to Rumble! 😎👍
Geoff in Hollywood: The Only Real Earthquake and Continental Drift Sound Effect!
There's another reactor, Peter Barber, who is also a bass and provides an excellent explanation of those "breathy A1s". Love Elizabeth's enthusiasm.
I think that this is my favorite of Geoff's! They've all been so good, but the arrangement, his voice, and how he plays with the octaves is just my favorite! I, too, love his drop at @1:13 of the original.
I just need to say that it is SOOOoo delightful to observe you when you GEEK out over your music! 😅 thank you for that fun.
Always wonder if Geoff uses his voice to have fun in everyday life. Like going to an electronics store and asking real deep "Do those speakers have good bass?". Or ordering a coffee at Starbucks in nomal voice and adding in deep bass "Black as my soul please" :D
Or telling bedtime stories to his little boy. A different voice for every character.
When he speaks his voice is really that low
Ordering at the drive thru in subharmonics would be very startling
@@vicmartone That would just be ridiculous!
You asked about using vocal effects on voices. As a front of house sound guy, I do use effects even in a live setting. Adding compression to get a handle on radical dynamic changes, applying equalization (EQ) to tame unflattering, or enhancing desired, frequencies that may be present in a voice/microphone combination, using automated pitch correction to help vocalists who may not be feeling well or struggle at certain points, using a chorus effect sometimes with an octave "displacement" (like the effect you liked on Geoff's voice), adding a delay and/or a reverberating effect are all tools I'll use on occasion to help the stage talent accomplish what they want: to sound as good as they can. Some I'll use all the time. I can't think of one voice or instrument that I haven't needed to apply some EQ on to make the signal more usable. Most I only use when the situation calls for it.
Thanks for the insight! You must have amazing reflexes to be able to do all that, and do it well, in a live performance.
I think VoicePlay (Geoff is their bass) gives a shout-out to their sound guy at the start of their shows, have the audience applaud for him, and then the instruction to leave him alone for the rest of the show so he can do his job. 😂
@@shirleykarr3554 Thank you, Shirley, though it isn't so much reflexes as it is working with the stage talent. To get things right, I've been known to record a rehearsal then play it back on repeat so I can work on something until I like how it sounds. I find that I am constantly learning new concepts and techniques to be better.
I can say for certain that listening to The Charismatic Voice and other reactors has taught me about genres that aren't necessarily my "go to," and I've use what I've learned in live settings.
Ooh- He's back! And this is a GREAT song for him. Too bad work prevents me from the premiere, but what a way to chill after work. Oh yeah, bring on Monday!
The flipped thumbnail image threw me XD
Love this cover. One of Geoff's best for sure.
It feels so good listening tô Geoffs interpretation of classics!!
hope you are recovering smoothly and gently from your labors and that the MiniCharismaticVoice is thriving! Beautiful reaction as always
I love that this song really highlights his higher register.
You can know absolutely nothing about what your talking saying and still have fun watching your reactions to music of all kind. We all need to find our passion like you have.
I loved today’s analysis @The Charismatic Voice! You pay attention to detail it’s so extraordinarily fun to watch and learn from you and Kirk! Thank you 🙏❤️
bless you ;) i love the joy you bring to your analysis. the music you review is great, and your reaction to it, is even better
Your giggles at 8:08 are great! 👍
Geoff made a wonderful and moving song, several times better with his magic voice.
So so so looking forward to your reaction and analysis!
Can’t wait to see your reaction! I think you’re gonna like this one…
Great reaction, as always, Elizabeth! Loved the giggles! I’m a huge fan of Bill Withers, but by now I have such faith in Geoff’s arrangements and musical instincts that I knew I’d love this-and I really do! It’s a beautiful tribute to Withers and a gorgeous take on the original. Missed you in chat! Hope all is well!
Watching you hear music and delight in it is just one of the best things ever! Thank you for bringing in the sunshine!
Yebba "My Mind" It's criminal that you haven't done this song yet.
WOW!! I'm in love with this guy's voice.
This is perhaps the most over the top cover of a song I have ever heard. Much too much were going on at the same time, for a song like this. But somehow, even though my ears screamed for mercy in the beginning, at the end I felt i had heard a pretty good version of the song. That being said, I still am awed at the pure voice range and especially control, of Jeff Castellucci. The man can sing anything better than anyone. But this time, musically he would have gained from having a simpler production with less voices, and keeping it closer to the original. But then again, one can't really discuss musical taste. Everyone is different. Elisabeth, was as always a pure delight. Her insights and musical enthusiasm always brightens up the day.
I have learned that for me, especially on this one, to not consider them the same song. For me it works better if Bill Withers section is over in one corner of my musical appreciation and Geoff’s version is in another.
After understanding the lyrics and the purpose of the song the Withers version almost seems too bouncy. I do love the original, but this one seems much more true to the lyrics.
As you said musical taste is very subjective. But I find this is no so much over the top, just incredibly complex. I can listen to the Bill Withers song and not think about it later. But this one I tend to go back over and over again because I can’t get it out of my head.
Thanks for the information on what the song was originally written about. Personally, I think there is a difference between a little electronic modulation to add interest and electronic manipulation to cover up lack of range or technique or to distract. We are all listening digitally now anyway.
I love how you enjoy music and giggle during the song. Geoff's covers are the best and I love your videos about him because I can hear so many more things that I can't hear without your explanation :D
Geoff also deserves a Grammy for this cover. Along with most of his songs, just an amazing artist!
You’re giggling every time at Geoff’s lows is infectious. Canadian artist Cœur de Pirate also covers this song. Her version is just vocals and percussion, and the vocals have a great choir feel to them, I think you’d really like that version as well.
Geoff drops a low note. Elizabeth giggles. It's just laws of physics.
It is funny how your voice is lower than usual right from your first giggle. It shows how much you are in the music and how much you appreciate him. That’s an immediate musical crush.
Geoffe and Tim are probably two in a billion as far as Basso Profundos in the world. Truly incredible talent.
Yes Geoff …Tim and Austin are awesome
This is as Elizabeth says one of his best .... and damn I think junior gave her a kick in some of those low... lows.😂🤣😎🇬🇧🧙♂️🌺😘
Elizabeth, I just LOVE you! I love how much you love music! Thank you for sharing your love for music combining with your amazing professional knowledge, without losing that "fan girl" flavor. 'Cause when it comes to great music, we are ALL fan girls and fan boys . . .
Thanks for sharing that, i LOVE music by Bill Withers and wouldve never guessed in a million years that this was an antilove story style song describing addiction. As someone who has hosted more than one HEAVY alcoholic during detox, i can attest that its almost like losing a loved one when you are left with the time and thoughts that pass each day without the blur of alcohol to help. One success story of mine was a man who had told me he had never stopped drinking a day in his life since he got out of the Vietnam War as a draftee, and when he was finally sober without withdrawls he told me that as much as he'll always miss it, alcoholism held him in place for twenty years. It made me tear up when i saw him get his GED and then Associates in Engineering. I hope hes doing good today
Dear Elizabeth - I honestly feel that if you could, you would marry his voice.
Geoff blew me away with his range on this song, respect!!
Love the way you bust out laughing every time he does a sudden drop in his voice.
Little Metalhead on the way. All the best Elizabeth and Kirk ❤️
Rumbles and delights and giggles (not to mention deep musical insights)...Elizabeth's joy in music is the BEST kind of infection we can get... may we all catch this magic!! LOL
The uncontrollable giggles are the best reaction to the crazy geoff effects
Geoff is the definition of "eargasm". great react, greetings from chile
You know it's a reaction by Elizabeth when it takes over 10 minutes of reaction time to get through the first 30 seconds of the song itself.
The depth of analysis is exquisite and much appreciated.
Now, if she would just react to Liliac, all would be right in the world. 😁
“Let’s listen to that again!”
@@joeb4142 "Sorry sorry, I wanna hear that again," she says a minimum of 5 times, LOL. Appreciate your comment.

I really love watching your reaction videos. Your analysis helps me to get deeper into the music and understand some of the subtle things people are doing. And points out to me areas I should be paying more attention to. It's really increased my admiration for the people who create the music.
PETER AND ELIZABETH ARE THE GREATEST BASS ANALYST TO ME ... 🥰🥰

This is Geoff at his best. And at his best is so good.
You should totally do an analysis on Geoff’s Way Down video😍😍😍😍
Agreed. You should also check out Eric Hollaway and his videos including the one of him doing the same C1 but not using subharmonics that Geoff does so amazingly, as Eric does it using a mostly chest but with some throat support, and it is just powerful.
