  • In this video I test the top speed of my “Cheapest Traxxas Slash” Project using a GPS recorder. But this time I have installed the optional high speed gearing. It claims 30+mph on the Box...How Fast do You think it will go??

    Thing about lipo’s is they can hold that speed for longer, so if you have a half charged nimh battery and a half charged lipo will definitely run faster. Lipo’s dont lose volts whereas nimh do.

    The stock NiMh battery is 8.4V compared to a 2S lipo at 7.4V so the performance will be similar. So putting a lipo isn't going to make all that much difference unless you increase the voltage to a 3S 11.1V lipo or higher. But if you do, the ESC will need to be upgraded since the stock has a limit of 2S 7.4V.
    Someone once told me that in the end the 2s lipo won't make much of a difference to your top speed, as the resting voltage is lower than a stock NiMh.
    But as you've said in your videos, the advantage of the lipos is the consistent discharge they provide. That and longer run times with higher mAh.
    Nice to see you test the speed using the optional speed gear! I ended up getting a top speed of 32mph (all stock) on my 2wd Slash but I took a new stock Traxxas motor & did the "water break-in method" to get that speed. Otherwise, I was getting 25-30mph consistently on the NiMh stock battery.

      @RCKnockout  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow. Thanks for pointing that out! That makes a lot of sense. I guess I didn’t think about the NIMH being a higher voltage compared to the 7.4v of the 2s? I actually did a top speed run with my Traxxas 1/16 e Revo running two NIMH in parallel and I was a bit confused why it felt more powerful and had a higher top speed than the 11.1v 3S. So in parallel they actually produced more voltage. Interesting 🧐 . Lipo is still definitely the way to go though!

    I firmly believe that the stock Slash 2wd is at it's most fun on the stock 550 motor with the optional gearing on 2s. It's just fast enough without getting difficult to put that power down. It's easy to get and keep sideways, it's not so fast that it breaks when you bounce it off of things, etc. I upgraded my beater 2wd Slash to VXL and didn't like it at all. Converted it back to brushed and put the VXL in a 4wd slider I rebuilt.

    Its not a fluke man! People always go on about lipo, sure they got more punch than NiMH, but a QUALITY nimh 7 cell pack will always go faster! Its 8.4v, a 2s is 7.4, of course it goes faster on NiMH, but it will only do this with quality cells that can hold the higher voltage under load. A freshly peaked 7 cell is really like around 9.5v fresh off the charger a lipo fresh off is never higher than 8.4v. now what actually works best, pickup the traxxas 8 cell 9.6v NiMH battery and watch her fly! Esc is rated for this. Wayyyyy better than 2s lipo!
