Path of Exile has private leagues, essentially temporary private servers you can host with friends. When I hosted one with friends, it was some of the most fun I ever had with the game I've played for thousands of hours. Some streamers/organisations have big community events that are also massively popular. It's never ruined the community or substantially divided the player base. As soon as I heard of this project, I instantly drew the parallel, and I'm 100% behind it.

You sound like those people that complain about the devs wasting time on one update and not doing another update instead, as if the devs dont comprise of multiple different teams who all simultaneously work on different aspects of the game
I think that without extremely robust tools, like the ability to make new bosses, quests, or even areas, that the primary appeal of community servers will be adjusting XP rates and also a way for people to all enjoy a self-imposed challenge together. If a youtuber starts a new series on a custom server with those rules, their community can jump in, and I think that'd be awesome. Not especially popular or any real risk to the main servers, but a fun diversion.
During the discord stage jagex has said they are looking to make it possible to play on both a community server and the live game at once with the same account (character). I think that would be a big help in mitigating the fracture of the playerbase
If community servers really take off I don't think that will necessarily be a bad thing for OSRS because I doubt the community will ever want to give up all of Jagex' additions to the game, even if those additions are almost exclusively being used in community servers. I think if we get any downsides from this it will either be a fractured playerbase or Project Zanaris will just be a flop.
I feel like if/when private servers become widespread, I'm going to lose motivation to keep leveling my existing character and probably lose interest in the game period
One point i think is missed is the side effect of project Zanaris on the main game and leagues: the changes theyre making to the codebase will make it easier and more stable for jagex to make new worlds, including test worlds, so that developer time has benefits to the engine and tooling. Even if community servers are a failure, those changes are much needed

Speaking from complete ignorance here but I’ll just throw an opinion out that I’m not 100% on; if there are private servers that are so much better than the main game that a substantial number of people would rather play on those instead of the main servers, that sounds like a pretty good incentive for Jagex to introduce things, potentially even additions from those servers, that resonate with the player base.
Exactly If there was a community server that got popular with boosted xp rates for example I think a decent amount of people would consider playing that if it got really popular.
Yes, I completely agree. I think this honestly will bring more players back to the game, ( bored players) ( players who don't have the time and patience ) ( players from other non official private servers ).

My brother and I have brainstormed fun OSRS game modes for a while. If community servers come out with the amount of customization they've hinted at I'm excited to try and build at least one of those ideas. First will be utilizing leagues and deadman mechanics for a roguelike.
While the private servers may allow a niche in terms of developing new content that is truly player driven; there is a hidden danger that unless all of the required tools are provided very early on to heavily change the experience, most servers will simply become clones where they have boosted XP and drop rates as the majority of the playerbase doesn't have an unlimited time to play the main game alone. If this ends up being the case, people will play the content they want from the main game much quicker, then have no reason to continue their subscription. People also haven't considered that if Leagues and Deadman are hostable on private servers, there will be very little draw for these game modes on official servers when hosted by Jagex moving forwards. There is a very real world whereby if Jagex don't execute Project Zanaris completely perfectly, it will do irreparable harm to the main game and the playerbase numbers.
On the subject of RL plugins and community servers, I keep thinking about the possibility of custom plugins specifically for a specific community server. Obviously what's possible would depend on what kind of API access/customization is available for the community servers, but we already have RL plugins that can reskin things, add NPCs, etc. Even if Jagex didn't provide a way to import art assets or add stuff officially, you could do a lot with clever RL plugins, which could be paired with the ability to modify drop rates/XP drops/etc. to create custom quests/bosses/minigames with real rewards. So like you, I don't see those two things as being in conflict, but rather something that together could do way crazier stuff than either could do alone.
To the point of fracturing the community, I think people tend to overlook the fact that the playerbase as a whole isn't some set number that's divided among the different options. Personally, I wouldn't have touched osrs without leagues/boosted private servers because frankly the initial experience as a brand new player feels largely tedious and overwhelming. The first 10, even the first 100 hours of rs, is filled with quit moments that experienced players breeze by but make that first time as thorny as can be for someone just starting out. Boosted servers and gamemodes basically offer a way to skip most of that and play some of the best content runescape has to offer which I think ultimately funnels them back into the main game after getting their bearings. I wouldn't doubt if things like permanent leagues servers or similar things draw in a significant number of players back to official servers. Also the sheer cost of servers will keep the fracturing in check too. I doubt they'll allow direct monetization from owned servers whether it be through donation or otherwise, meaning likely the only people who could support 100-200+ player servers would be content creators. This still could still be a significant draw, but I highly doubt it'll be as severe as something like WoW's split where some servers break even 5-10% of the playerbase.
I hope we do get private servers and it has customization options that end up with some nerds making a whole new game. OSRS getting it's own DOTA or somehow make a Cardgame

Unless you can adjust EXP rates I don't see a point. and if that were to happen, They'd have to make it so characters are locked to that server and couldn't get into the main game. Which would also make it pointless compared to an actual ran private server. IDK, I just can't see the actual purpose for this.

Customer Support can make money by retaining players who pay for membership. Player division is going to be my biggest concern as there is more precedent for it. Still I think Zanaris needs to be slower rolled I feel like because I think if anyone can have a server that opens up pandora's box for me as far as bot clients go because they can have a way to look more into the game than what they can currently. All the best games in history have been open to map editing, community servers, and allowed users to generate an income from their creations. Multiplayer Servers on Minecraft. Custom Maps on Warcraft III, older versions of Counter Strike and other titles from Valve like Team Fortress (1 and 2) and others. I’m amazed that the vast majority of developers in recent times have been hesitant to open up their games to user created content. Blizzard dumbed down their custom games in Overwatch and Starcraft II so that they became incredibly dull. CS2’s community servers are still largely broken, even now 1 year after launch. And the only other dev to embrace private servers in the past decade is Roblox. But none others. One example of a “dead” game that still thrives by way of its private servers is Pristontale. 25 years after it shuttered, community servers using the open source code have kept the game alive with fresh content, long after the devs moved on and ended support for the game.
As someone who was spending thousands of hours in Warframe before they discovered OSRS I feel the need to point something out. You talk about people developing these ideas that can be tested on these private servers. But you fail to talk about people taking the time to do development work for Jagex for free. Warframe has a great program where players can model and design 3d skins for frames and DE will sell them to other players and give the designer a cut of the profits. but for a game like OSRS if you develop a new skill for OSRS that the playerbase loves for a year, Jagex can copy and paste it into the main game after a poll. Thanks for making all of the content and doing the work, yoink, later. That just feels too predatory to me. And you had to pay Jagex money to host the test server for the code they took from you. Honestly this is making me wonder what an open source, un-monetized MMO could look like. If we are going to be the players and developers we don't really need Jagex taking this amount of money for mostly server hosting...
This is a valid concern. We've seen in the past where people have come up with ideas on Reddit that are given as close to universal applause as you can get within the community, being attempted or even fully implemented into the main game. The developers tend to be good about giving a shout-out to these creators, but generally don't seem to get "royaltees". Granted, coming up with an idea is just the first step and doesn't take that much effort to write out. The Dev team make most of the in-game assets and code related to the suggestion and some times add a big touch of their own from the design, so when it comes to the ideas being spitballed the idea's creator is more inclined to just be happy to see their creation added to the game. With whole skills being potentially developed from scratch on a Zanaris server though, there's so much more effort being put in to make even a prototype that if they do put the idea into the game, it'd be wrong to not compensate the creator more than just a shout-out. Because if a server is popular because of a unique skill or such, they'd have to fully examine and copy at least a few aspects from the original even if they're gonna take their own spin on it.
Great vid. I'm worried about the amount of dev time needed to support private servers. I'd much rather see more devs on content creation and engine work. If Jagex is providing these servers and not just releasing the code, it's going to take a lot of work to allow people to customize content (especially to the lengths mentioned in this vid like making a new skill). I'd expect the initial release to not have much customization available and I'd be incredibly surprised if it ever gets to the point where people are able to add new quests or skills to the game on community servers. Though I'd love to see that happen.
@@amazingkoolI posted this after watching the whole video and mentioned that I'd prefer to see more devs on content creation and engine work. I think hiring people to work on this is a waste of resources.
