Jagex is pretty infamous for generally being jerks to their community, if it wasn't for the community voting system I'd think they outright resented having a player base.
@@KiraSlith From what i remember during EoC. The Gowers made it as a family game they never expected to take off. They started off in a cottage making games. It was never expected to hit big, but did. They expected like 100 players and then the game to die like most miniclip games. But people neeted it and that's why you needed 99 smithing to smith lvl 40 armor. 1 person got 99 smithing and wanting something to do, most players saw lvl 40 as a achievement that took 3 days in a era most flash games were like 5-30 minutes long. You had like a duck's life next to saturday cartoon games and mardek rpg. Right around EoC, i heard the rumors were that the Gowers started giving positions not to osrs's most talented players but bully heavy incompetent but related people related to the gowers/management family. That's when eoc started. They didn't know what to do, but knew WoW was popular. So they pushed Eoc. Glassdoor was filled with reports of the people, while family being abusive to workers, constantly assigning nonsense tasks, incompetent, and apparently pay being cut. Apparently the Gowers used to do "jollies" (holiday bonuses and events), catering, and when they sold it, that all got cut. Then it got sold by stockholders. Mod mmg might have been right there. Family jagex after free trade failure was sold to corporate milkers. And they valued profitability over worker pay and customer sentiment (at the time), it wasn't until they lost 90% of the population (200k to 10-20k rs3 players) that they changed the tune.
Yea Jagex probably has one of the worst reputations among players ever. Shame they made such an influential game but were such asshats to their player base
@@DanBorges1337 I mean tbh. EoC's mod management was definitely a petty hit on Suomi. Honestly i have more respect for Suomi for not putting up with that. Imagine spending your whole life grinding a video game, of osrs of all things, probably one of the most "I spent 10000 hrs on a uim self grinded mind talisman f2p only essenceless ironman killing 15000 hrs of imps" kinda games. Then they start selling xp, 700k+ worth for like 200$ a day. Making the grind pay to win/whale/waste your money (rs3 had like 1m a hr afk methods a couple years later. So burn 10000$s to top a leaderboard erased like sand to new $$$$$$ spenders) So now all the honor rules turned from optimizing the game/scape like osrs/suomi did. He did effigies and talked with mods on the regular at the time in 2010. So the falling out was actually predated by Suomi (at the time of eoc), asking for 200$ a day for "i hate this, but if i don't, someone else might. Don't donate, it's a stupid cause.. But if you donate to the Suomi spin a wheel p2w sham cause.. I guess i'll spend it." vibe of energy. (not his exact words. But the vibe). So he was either caught with a community of 10000 furious mobbers, (and remember, 100,000s of people voiced disinterest in eoc and disapproved), but got ignored. He either could choose a lose or lose situation. Get screamed at for a shill for crowdfunding Squeal spins, and be called a "sellout", while losing or needing to potentially spend 70,000$ a year (whale xp/p2w milkers) without any apparent source of osrs derived income to be competitive. Or call out jagex on their crap and then he got muted on previously ignored cases from alleged higher up bad blood. 'Find something on him, or else'. Honestly i don't blame the guy for moving on. I never was osrs deep but i remember leaving a game plagued by hackers we speed ran like 10 maps for and got like 6x world records for a week. They ddosed and the mods took bribes and laughed and we went.. "ehh. i don't want to tryhard a game the 'winning' competition are 'skilled' hackers, ddosers, and account hacking script kiddies with hack legal re runs.". you only got 1 attempt and they ddosed the 1 attempt. Meanwhile they bribed the mods with unlimited items so they had unlimited non ddosed retries on a speedrun with hacked/bought gear to "be fair". And it was so blatant the mods were wearing gear they never earned and died in. They avoided no aoe and had like 1/1000 run gear with 2/4 run experience. The kind of corrupt mods to have the rarest gear in the game but stand in basic mechanics. Their gear was the osrs equivilent of a Tbow at lvl 47 combat with a amulet of glory, full masori, sapphire bracelet, and "self made earned gear", leather boots. Dying to "the very diffuclt boss".. a wall hand in lumbridge. Or openly walking into aoe. OSRS was 2000x more grindy than that game and suomi was probably 200,000x sweatier than me. But i looked at it for a summer, and went. "Nah, this isn't for me", and Suomi seems to have gone the same. TBH, im happy for them. Sandcastle records are great and all. But I'll always respect him irl more for leaving than neeting his life away.

Same I almost forgot about Suomi in the distant recesses of my mind looking at the hiscores all those years ago until I saw a video from beast fable seeing him on RuneScape classic
You don't realize it, but you're pretty much spot on with the edating accusation lol at the time, Jagex's chat detection extended to private messages, so if you were sharing explicit messages, you would most likely receive an auto-mute. At the time he wasn't e-dating someone (i'm not going to name them), but he was close friends with someone who was trying to help him with his personal life. Suomi disappearing wasn't really due to anything other than him actually finding a life outside of RS. She was able to help him work through his issues, and from what I know, he ended up actually getting a girlfriend. I think there's weird overlap between some of the girls he was friends with at the time, since I know he had some explicit 'e-dating' relationships around the same time that probably contributed to the mute. Either way, he disappeared because he got his life together. I can count on one hand the number of people who probably know this and there isn't really any proof other than just being one of those few people who knew at the time. I don't have an contact with him or the people we knew at the time, so idk what happened after all the fallout with Jagex and maxing. Edit: Also, I know the mutes were automatic in many cases, but I do also know that Mod Infinity at the time was exceptionally corrupt, along with other mods like Mod Ramen and that one J. Mod that had a tumblr and was e-dating a minor at the time (Mod Lee aka: Regicidal). Small group of mods who truly ruined the game in terms of community by showing favoritism to certain players and targeting those who insisted Jagex uphold the integrity of their game. I could write a novel regarding the corrupt J. Mods at the time, but it's whatever because they're all gone now.
@@voidbiteits not a blief... its proven fact by almost every single historical figure that had power, they all abused it in some way and it corrupted almost all of them...
Urgh. Corrupt low paid but power tripping game mods are the worst. I didn't have a run in with jmods here, but i remember another game that openly had a openly ddosing hacker guild running bots that paid off some kinda reddit/discord mod type with items. Guy was openly corrupt, they grinded out 500 hrs of items in first 2 hrs of release, had hacked stats and borderline questionable gameplay and gear. ( The game was spell heavy and melee was unviable due to poor balancing. 1 shot glass cannon + mobs did lethal autoattack damage. Think Meleeing a Mario goomba as a character who dies upon contact with mob. That kinda 'management') They flat out hacked the game and used melee because it was autoclickerable (magic required aiming), and flyhacks to literally hover over the mob's heads. The corrupt mod said. "I like having hacker friends, what proof r they hacking?" took items as donations and let them ddos us because they literally leeched our dungeons for items and power tripped after dying in the raid. Cartman types, huge ego/power trips, utterly incompetent, failed with items they didn't earn, sat in aoe, and then power tripped. There wasn't a magic epic spree, it was like dealing with a crackhead at work. No career ambitions and paid in power trips. Awful to work with. Corrupt so called "mods" (aka Morbidly Obnoxious Deadbeats 'M.O.D.s' are just the worst.

Man this brings back memories. I was close friends with rank 2 Jake back in the day and we would always group call on skype and one time Suomi joined the call briefly and he was such a cool guy, a legend that will never be forgotten in the runescape community!
Dang that is brutal. At the end of a years-long journey through your developmental years, get an offer to celebrate it publicly by the leaders of your achievement, then get it retracted because of your views and words about disliking the direction the game is going, then accidentally ruin your moment because of a new mechanic they added that epitomizes the changes you dont like.
Yup, as i recall. Suomi didn't even disown jagex, he was like. "Guys, i hate squeal of fortune, but as it sells 700k xp a hr a day and the #2 might use it. I do not support this content, but if you wish to support this excuse of a joke. Feel free to donate to 200$ on stupid spins a day for this disgrace of a feature" If i recall, he wasn't enthusiastic about it but actually lukewarm. He was a challenge player, and everyone hated the idea of "buying highscores" at sof release. The game was all about the grind, then you could spend 200$ a day for like 700k xp in 10-20 random skills. Lamps, and potential 200m gp in a era 1-2m a hr was high end in 2010. About 2000m osrs now with 10-17m/hr methods. And then jagex got beef with that since that was the year the gower brothers hired incompetent family members as upper management, sold the company, mod mmg came in for increasing quarterly short term profits. and they lost 90% of the playerbase and backpetaled for osrs.
lol he spent his developmental years sitting in-front of a computer screen all waking hours of his days to earn something that has no effect on his real life except that it takes all his real life away.

Can’t remember if it was colonello or another CC who covered the story of Soumi. But it was mentioned that ironically he got the last bit of xp in complete solitude I.e no friends or anyone to witness/acknowledge his final accomplishment.
That's a shame people treated him like that just for having a crazy goal and sticking to it. Hate is just so pointless, especially when it comes to something like this.
Yeah I believe he also changed his name to "Quit for Lol" at one point and JaGeX force changed his name back except removed the rare double spaces between the characters in his name.
@@Matthew7531 My memory of the time is that Jagex initially force changed to help him get his double spaces back after the whole K O N Y thing. The only reason he got the single digit spaces later on was due to the other player that had that name finally opting to give it up. Suomi had wanted it.
I once ran across suomi (S U O M I at the time, if I remember correctly) in rs3 in prif thieving from elves in the Cadarn district. We became friends in game, I asked him why he was still thieving even though he was 200m xp, he said it was just fun. It's always amazing to me how much resentment gaming communities build up towards the better players. Suomi and Zezima are Runescape's examples, but it doesn't matter which game you play - if there is a top player, there's also a chunk of players (and devs) who will find any reason they can to spit hatred at that top player. It's honestly an embarrassing facet of the gaming community, and I wish people were better at calling it out and shutting it down when it's seen.
A lot of people get jealous and can't believe they aren't the #1 in whatever game has a leaderboard. Players used to joke "hax" decades ago, but nowadays those messages are accusations.
Colonello one of the best content creators. Gotta give him props for not following the trend of simply regurgitating other peoples clips. Thanks for the endless nostalgia bro.
I met SUOMI once, in the clan recruiting area. He was really chill. Thinking back, this was in 2013 right around the time the butterfly event happened. I’m very lucky to have met a legend before he left forever.
I kinda know how Suomi felt when he got membership and when the Squeal of Fortune released. I had a similar experience when RS3's version of FSW launched. I had played for 1.5 years at this point and in terms of XP a lot of that felt invalidated by the boosted XP rates.
He's not entirely gone. Just mostly. Given the notoriety, however; I hope he's living a good life. Source: I met Zezima through the 2014 Weekly Challenge Hiscores event (herbs farmed) & distinctly remember doing some DMs with him. It says my discord account was around since Dec 2015, so it might've been then it might've been in 2016, but I swear I remember it happening. Pretty much confirms the raunchy stuff he'd say that got him in trouble... sounds like a normal guy tbh just with a superhuman ability to hyperfocus for long periods of time. (Lord, give me strength & opportunity to make my RuneScape goals come to fruition...)
I think them adding a profanity filter way back when was the last straw for me. You'd be like 'oh great a profanity filter, we can swear now~" but nope. They literally put that in place for you or other players to better detect swearing and report it. They were still vehemently against swearing. And that pissed me off.

I remember him having a spot in the official documentary of runescape, so maybe they've buried the hatchet since then?
I met him sometime around 02 or early 03 while mining coal for rares. We had similar levels and goals at the time, but I ended up ditching skilling entirely in favor of pking and staking especially when Rs2 was launched. He seemed like a cool and approachable kid around the same age as I was, unlike some other Finnish players (M_Oldfield, TheHate etc.) I lost touch with Suomi afterwards only playing Rs on/off and couldn't believe my eyes when I looked him up on hiscores having returned for the launch of Osrs. Oh the good old days. I was grinding my 99 fishing and Suomi was going for his 200m. I donated some money and had some conversation with him in Finnish. He was really open about his goal of 200m in all skills. Not a beggar but just deticated to hit that goal.
@@The1Jebrim Yeah, now you see what I mean though when I told ya about the blatant misinformation being spread in the RS community to this day though (especially by 'content creators'), paired with extreme favoritism.

He gave me 5m (During that time it was enough for a bond), I traded him a stein that makes yer character wobble like a drunk. After the trade he says "Paska peli". And now I couldn't agree more with him. Shitty game indeed.
He absolutely did not deserve all that fucking hate that he got. And genuinely got fucked over by Jagex with those mutes. This was during a time when the mods and devs were so very sensitive to any public criticism and Suomi wasn't the only one to suffer, popular and not. Watching Zezima become rank 1 and then Gertjaars followed by Suomi was peak RuneScape imo. After those 3 retired Rank 1 was no longer as impressive and it became more about your wallet and the size of your bank account in-game and irl. Especially with how the game has changed xp/hour wise and how AFK a lot of it is now. It took over a decade for people to basically 200M all, and nowadays you have thousands (2235 as of this post) of players with 200M all, 5.8B xp. It's crazy how the player-base has shifted from 99.9% casuals just playing for fun to the exact opposite where people are trying to play efficiently all the time or they feel like they are wasting their time. People like Zezima, Gertjaars and Suomi were the extreme outliers of the community and we only had maybe a couple dozen who were at that level from 2001-2011. However nowadays it feels like 90% of the community are at that level because the game has been optimized so much by the community that the most efficient xp rates are common knowledge.
So i quit in 2008 and started playing again in October 2023, big difference for me - Mobile availability. Can grind out skills whilst doing other stuff, then quest and play games when I fancy actually playing. Real game changer.
really weird back in the day i heard how suomi said something crazy in chat and was muted for it and people hated him i guess his worst crime was asking for donations, not the best option imo, but he wanted exp so understandable
@Colonello FYI coals were called Certs back then because it was essentially currency back when the game didn't have gobs of GP in circulation yet. 1 coal cert was 100 coal at the certificate dealer in fally. 1 coal wasn't 100 gp, it was 1 cert = 100 coal.
I've actually talked with Suomi on Twitter before into the DMs. Really nice guy and I'd have never expected to talk to him. He had a temporary account. He has removed it unfortunately because he wanted to stay hidden or something It kinda sucks to see a legend like him dissapear 4 ever.
in my opinion, i heard more about suomi when i was young playing runescape than anybody else, jamflex did him dirty, hopefully he is out there and reads this, you're a legend brother and we all hope you're doing great things.
I remember meeting Suomi IRL at runefest 2011, he was staying at the same hotel as me, we all got a cool group pic together, he's a great guy, very friendly and keen to talk
I knew about him not so much about the negatives, though most of us who played had all begged ingame asked people for money at one point. Met him in w3. I haven't seen him in a long time. We were just chilling in w3 ranting on about the game and the Jmods lol and Eoc when it came out, and it was the players who chose to give away their own money to donate. That was fully up to them. Sometimes, the RS community is just trollably jealous tbh. For me, I quit RS3 because of the wheel of fortune scam put rare item tokens they were hard to get, and I collected for years all those rares and paid for them eventually without notice after right when I collected all of the rares jagex just randonly got rid of it and said it was a mistake those making the rares hard to get than they realeased it out to the whole entire community for basically like nothing and I paid well over $1,000 throughout the years to get all it's funny how it happens a month after I made the purchase to get my last rare item from that collection.
13500 hours to be lebel max? Ok I'm gonna try the game today. Im curious, i love to grind and i could watch cartoons while playing. Im already down for it
Great video as always, but I feel as though I'm missing some details as to why Suomi was so controversial/disliked to the extent of some of the comments shown. Can anyone fill me in a bit more?
Definitely! Perhaps I should have elaborated on it more. Maybe someone else will have more info than I do, 99% of his videos being gone made it rough. But it seemed to be a combination of things. Taking donations, accused of having an ego, teleporting away at his 200m parties, frequent criticisms of Jagex in videos, and many of the sexual jokes he made in game and in his videos were seen as childish. Biggest of all is probably how he handed the whole Jagex cancelling his trip fiasco. Many saw him as a whiny complainer who didn’t deserve to go to Jagex in the first place. They felt that rank 1 should have more grace and less of a temper.
Was friends with him back in classic, S U O M I at the time was lower total than I but wasn't long until he left me in the dust lol if you are watching out there Neopiccolo says hi. rip classic.
What they did to Suomi and the entire playerbase with squeel and EOC was dirty. I have never forgiven them and many others haven't either. Jagex is a shady company and I honestly think that they are behind or involved in OsRs bots in some form or another.
Totally true and always has been, i remember reading a dev team member running and multi hundred million dollar botsite/goldselling services cuz of the voding he knew.
I remember the days of SUOMI racing to the top. I couldn't log in a single day without hearing something about him. It was insane. I was always more of a Zezima fan personally.
Suomi went trough a lot. We were friends in the game since 2007 & had many deep conversations. Haven't seen him around in a while, I've also been inactive myself. Hope he's doing well. rsn: Tune
Suomi is the problem why video games can never evolve, the fuck he mad about when the game is less of a chore and can enjoy everything it has to offer when he became a member.
100% Agree with this, Runescape is a grind game so you do need to be careful with adjusting xp, but membership isn't pay to win.. its pay to play. F2P Runescape is more like a free trial you aren't expected to grind to 99 in it but if you do fair play i guess. Also first time I've actually heard the story of this guy so no pre-existing bias, he seems a bit egotistical and 'the world hates me' Was invited to a game release and then got himself muted, then went and publically started talking smack about the people who invited him? Why would they risk giving him a public platform? Logged in during an event and misclicked - Omg the developers targeted me! Also shamelessly asking for 'donations' (aka begging) to grind out his skills. Not seeing the hype, just a guy with an insane amount of free time.
Saying that JAGEX sabotaged this dude is insane. He was toxic bordering Pest Control chat, uploaded multiple videos trashing Jagex, then went on an Alex Jones conspiracy theory style rant about Jagex sabotaging him by introducing an update. Title's misleading as hell
My memories of RuneScape: Farming chaos Druids for unidentified herb drops that sold for 1k each unidentified. Then cleaning 1 of each stack in the bank to figure out what each herb stack was without identifying it.
So burn 10000$s to top a leaderboard erased like sand to new $$$$$$ spenders)
So now all the honor rules turned from optimizing the game/scape like osrs/suomi did.
But I'll always respect him irl more for leaving than neeting his life away.

jagex is extremely scummy yes

That kinda 'management')
They flat out hacked the game and used melee because it was autoclickerable (magic required aiming), and flyhacks to literally hover over the mob's heads.

I do not support this content, but if you wish to support this excuse of a joke. Feel free to donate to 200$ on stupid spins a day for this disgrace of a feature"
If i recall, he wasn't enthusiastic about it but actually lukewarm.

When you mentioned Zarfot I remembered how many of his videos I had watched in awe back in the day. RIP to SUOMI and Zarfot...
I remember meeting Suomi IRL at runefest 2011, he was staying at the same hotel as me, we all got a cool group pic together, he's a great guy, very friendly and keen to talk
jagex were dicks to suomi, also suomi was some kind of runescape god getting mining and agility to 200m before anything else
I remember him and gertjaars absolutely killing it back in the day
If I remember he also changed his in game name a few times too bashing Jagex. I believe at one point he changed it to "Quit for LoL"
Tori mainittu Suomella tavataan!
Never knew the country of Finland was a RuneScape player!
Poor guy.
He really didn't deserve all this.
@@ColonelloRS- As a person who just watched this video with no knowledge of the story so no pre-existing bias, you literally just read my mind.....
"suomi just knew he liked firemaking" - in other words, he was a mad man 🤣
Was friends with him back in classic, S U O M I at the time was lower total than I but wasn't long until he left me in the dust lol if you are watching out there Neopiccolo says hi. rip classic.
0:23 Dude he's like taking a Deep dive like we're about to man. Whatttttt?!?
What they did to Suomi and the entire playerbase with squeel and EOC was dirty. I have never forgiven them and many others haven't either. Jagex is a shady company and I honestly think that they are behind or involved in OsRs bots in some form or another.
Totally true and always has been, i remember reading a dev team member running and multi hundred million dollar botsite/goldselling services cuz of the voding he knew.
Love these videos man, very nostalgic! Appreciate the effort you put into these!
Thats crazy because I just spent like a good hour or two yesterday researching suomi. What a weird coincidence
That’s algorithm bro
0:46 is it just me or does the fire making skill icon look like ice barrage but fire
I remember the days of SUOMI racing to the top. I couldn't log in a single day without hearing something about him. It was insane. I was always more of a Zezima fan personally.
When I was first starting out I caught Zezima behind draynor bank and he gave me 10k I immediately went and bought Mithril armor and felt super rich
I don't have strong opinion about Zarfot's discoveries.
Great if people enjoy tick-manipulating, doesn't affect me.
Yeah I thought that 😂 - Ruined or made the game... orrr didn't change anything? I can't be arsed doing that but power to anyone who can.
@@MadMalMan Didn't change much. Most of the playerbase is still casual players that rarely tick manip
Suomi went trough a lot. We were friends in the game since 2007 & had many deep conversations. Haven't seen him around in a while, I've also been inactive myself. Hope he's doing well.
rsn: Tune
SUOOOMIII! i remember him telling me all about this back in the day, new the guy since 08. Really cool guy!
Also first time I've actually heard the story of this guy so no pre-existing bias, he seems a bit egotistical and 'the world hates me'
Was invited to a game release and then got himself muted, then went and publically started talking smack about the people who invited him? Why would they risk giving him a public platform?
Logged in during an event and misclicked - Omg the developers targeted me!
Also shamelessly asking for 'donations' (aka begging) to grind out his skills.
Not seeing the hype, just a guy with an insane amount of free time.
Is there a link to the exact series of chats that Jagex muted him over?
Saying that JAGEX sabotaged this dude is insane. He was toxic bordering Pest Control chat, uploaded multiple videos trashing Jagex, then went on an Alex Jones conspiracy theory style rant about Jagex sabotaging him by introducing an update.
Title's misleading as hell
My memories of RuneScape:
Farming chaos Druids for unidentified herb drops that sold for 1k each unidentified.
Then cleaning 1 of each stack in the bank to figure out what each herb stack was without identifying it.
Then, selling all the bad herbs for 1k each (massive profit) and selling the better stacks for more.
Zezima is still #1 in our hearts
5:14 he decided to stay in the forest, killing boars. Seven weeks, five days, thirteen hours, and twenty minutes, with three hours a night to sleep.
He doesn't seem to be a victim to me..........

Cool you got more OpenRSC footage in here 😁
It's too bad the staff of RSC ban random accounts and refuse to respond to why.
That self sabotage is tragic. Would have been the coolest thing ever. I don't blame them for retracting the offer, He was way out of line. Just so sad
