Yeah its almost as if the market regulates itself if you let it. In this case I guess it was the maximum number of some variable which was changed for a variable capable of bigger numbers and boom, suddenly people can actually "tell" you how much worth your trash is and thus your trash becomes trash again.
My theory is that because people had to sell outside the GE, some very rich people lied about trades that didn't took place and reported those fake prices on the forums which tricked players thinking they had to pay this high. It was also revealed in the video that prices were being manipulated.
It got even better. Blue Phat hit 6b so you'd flood your GE trying to buy blues at max cash.... Meaning you emptied your pouch and could continue to earn GP
@@Mrtyjr I mean 2-3 years ago, the prices of all rares not just phats, rose by like 3 to 4 times their starting price in a period of about a month as a group of merchers started to kick their manipulation in over drive, this caused the RS3 reddit to have a meltdown and the price check discord suitybot to close down as the original creator who really no longer plays RS3 himself got fed up of the complains coming his way as a result of these merchers abusing his price checking bot. While the GE update did definitely have a huge effect on the price of Phats, the reality was rares already crashed hard before the GE update was announced because these merchers rose it to such a ridiculously, high artificial price that when suity bot closed down and they lost their main tool of manipulating, the market was force to correct itself as no one had the cash to buy the new rares prices. Blue Phat reach 300+ bill at one point, very few people would have the actual GP do even buy that so the remaining Blue hat merchers were force to continuously bring the price down.

If you had a bunch of rares back in the day, they are most likely gone. I quit in 2008-2009 with 16 santas and masks. I recovered the account a couple of years ago, and it was all gone. Somehow I was hacked, and they leveled up a bunch of my skills. Luckily, I found one of my RS videos on YT from 2007.
Not necessarily. My main (original account) I still play on was made In very early 2001. I still have phats and other rares. I've considered several times selling them for real money but have always been scared of being scammed lol.
@@marcusfossa6695nope, it's hackers. These items are so lucrative that people built bots to sift through massive lists of leaked passwords and inspect thousands of inactive banks for valuable items. The bot might run for weeks or even months with no results but it just takes one hit
I didn't start playing Runescape until around 2007/8 so I obviously never got the party hat but always wanted one. It was a goal of mine to get enough to buy one. But I was only ever free to play and only knew of selling feathers and ashes on the ge so it was an impossible goal for me. 😂
I totally get that haha. I started playing around the same time. I wanted a Partyhat so bad but the best moneymaker I could think of was collecting snape grass.
I remember "merching" the keledagrim building supplies shop before they changed shop inventorys to be player specific you used to make 10k+ GP on each gold leaf/marble block
Colonello, I've been a long time viewer of your channel. You normally do a very great job retelling the old days of RuneScape EXCEPT In this video... I started playing In April 2001. I was there for the pumpkin drop and was there for the Christmas cracker drops. During the 2001 Christmas event I was In Fally park with a ton of other people along with Andrew, Paul and Ian (Had no Idea who they were at the time). I grabbed several crackers and again never thought much of them and unfortunately dropped them soon after. Anyways the whole reason that holiday Items became untradeable Is because of the "Phat dupe". Once Jagex realized that people were more than willing to "hack" Into the game to duplicate previous holiday Items who at that point In time was worth a decent amount they decided to make the future holiday Items non trade able.
I remember when they were doing the party hat event. I got 2-3 party hats during that event and i remember thinking how bad of a drop it was and dropping the party hats every time I got one. Crazy how much money they're worth now!
One slight inaccuracy in the video - it wasn't that the trade wouldn't go through if you put the offer in for >5% difference, but rather you physically couldn't put an offer in for more than 5% out from the price. The only way you could have an offer in the ge that was out by more than 5% was if you had put in the offer and then the price changed.
This is wild haha, saw the video and logged into my old RS account, still have a blue white and purple party hat, and tons of shards. Last time I was playing was during the dicing era!
Love that Jagex could have avoided this problem entirely if they'd just started dropping Easter Eggs again alongside the rabbit ears instead of making the rabbit ears one-per-person, and then making all past items available in the seasonal events each year from that point forwards. After all, they had never said that the holiday items wouldn't be returning. Players had just made that assumption once the pumpkins didn't return that one Halloween.
Colonello, have you ever done a video on the history of RWT? Seeing the Classic version, which I remember playing when I was just a kid lol, I wonder just how far back RWT went.
Nice video and yes, I stopped playing when Evolution of Combat came out, there's a reason I didn't play WOW! Still on that OSRS grind though, hoping Brighter Shores is the next big one, can't wait to play it😁
He didn't even touch Dicing. I hosted is Dragon Dyce. Just middle manned and took 10% of the pot as a trusted host. Had every rares and bought rare names. Was a wild time for me
I still have a white party hat, regret trading my blue one in at the time for it and some gold, but it is what it is. I actually had my account hacked and had all my Gold stolen but my party hat was behind a pin number that didn't get accessed, thus it's still safe and have my account still in runescape 3, although I don't play anymore.
I still have a white phat. I got one from a friend about the time the dupe was going on. I've got a bank pin and the account is still in use. But, tbh, that slot is better used for other things. So, I'm just letting it collect dust in my bank. Never know, maybe one day I'll be able to sell it and put down a hefty down payment on a house.
I don't really remember much ever a time on Classic party hats selling for millions and millions so I am not 100% certain how accurate the video is but it is a very cool video nonetheless.
I always disliked how the community voted for OG rares to be trash items in OSRS. There was an option for them to be very expensive from a shop similar to the crystal crown, should’ve been that instead of them being literal garbage.
It's beautiful game. Nice video. Seems like there are channels that explain the plot of cartoons... So I'm getting bit bloated by people who explain the very basics of basics. Still I got through this, so nice, sweet enough. Here is a somewhat trivial, but interesting question: Who started dev chat streams?
I knew the spawn spot for H'Ween masks. They dropped in 3s of thje same colour and I camped one of the wilderness spawns. Good times. Shame I had no patience. I sold them all for like 50k a set. I kept one set which I eventually sold for 1m, and then I thought I was buying Iron Ore certs with the money, but I wasn't - someone scammed me and sold me tin or copper certs and I quit RS on the spot (and then came back maybe 2 years later). On that note, certificates were the worst.
@@jeshegames Kind of. Except only for specific items and you had to physically go to an NPC to convert things to and from certificates. So you'd go up to the NPC (in this case, you could go to Draynor Village, the Fishing Guild or Brimhaven) with your 30 Lobsters and trade them in for 6 stackable Lobster Certificates. (Each worth 5 Lobsters if you traded them back into the NPC, of course.)
@@jeshegames Yep. We couldn't stack items by noting them, so if we wanted to trade 100 Iron Ore, it needed to be done in multiple trades. Jagex made certs to "fix" that, but to make a cert, you needed to run from the bank to the NPC that could turn items into certs (done in Draynor), and you would need to do the same to uncert items, so it was just a massive waste of time, but slightly more convenient than multiple trades.
With current gp prices (14 per bil), the blue phat is only worth about 1400 now. I’m pretty sure blues were never worth 42k so idk where you’re getting that figure from.
thanks, i didnt know about all those factors that led to the 2008 partyhat crash. I managed to buy a yellow for 90mil during that crash, but i thought it was because of the removal of pking that month
The most adorable part was where people thought they could crash the Party Hat market since they wanted them, but they only wanted them since they didn't have them, so when they had them, nobody wanted them since they lost value due to everybody now having them. P.S. Jagex could have solved this by just making all the items untradeable even after the fact, or put out Party Hats and such every single year. This would have crashed the market early, and forever. Clearly, Jagex didn't fully understand how value works -- social status trackers and displays of wealth -- and the concept of virtual fashion.
i own purple santa & halloween mask on rs3 , only because i like how they look and see if they ever rise in price (as i play mostly osrs now and stopped doing rs3).
I remember staying up late to collect masks and santas. Then flipping them within 1-2 months because I was a kid and a month felt like eternity to pass up profit...
I bought up 10 fish masks back when they came out for 1 mill each and had them in the grand exchange until they finally sold for 10m ea. That took over a decade to accomplish but it happened lol
I remember I bought a Santa hat in 2009, it was roughly the same price as the purple party hat and both were less than the Halloween mask as it was about September-ish so folks were buying them up for Halloween. I put the Santa hat on my account, logged out, and didn’t log back in for 2.5 years and when I did come back my account had been cleaned out and my stats were rolled back to 10’s lmao. Oh well c’est la vie
I think party hats actually created a huge, huge problem for those of us that grew up on Runescape... It essentially trapped us in FOMO, which is really bad... Now we look at content that will be discontinued in games and are like "if I don't do this now, then I might be missing out BIG" but that ends up leading to burnout and quitting the game in question :/
I had soooooo many parts hats. Masks. You name it on my runescape classic account. When RS2 came out, you had the option to move all your stuff to from RS1 to RS2. Well I wanted to stay and keep playing RS1. So I ended losing all my stuff because it stayed in RS1 never to be allowed to transfer again. Trillions of dollars gone lol. O well
In 2013 I briefly had 2 blue partyhats. Lost all interest in playing due to EOC just coming out and thought I'd see how much I could money I could get ... and promptly lost it all staking/gambling. Oh, regret.

this is such a fantastic breakdown. i follow runescape closely and appreciate the detail you went into.
@@XxJustinxx88 you probably have the oldest active account playing RS3
@@blaze4lifedog @blaze4lifedog I wish lol. I'm still friends with two people who started In January 2001 and both of them still play daily.
I've seen a bunch of similar comments on this video. My guess would be that Jagex removed them from the account, you weren't actually hacked.
I wanted a Partyhat so bad but the best moneymaker I could think of was collecting snape grass.
shoulda picked flax, buddy. Gotta be smarter than that.
Also, when the scythe and the maul came out they were OP af
One slight inaccuracy in the video - it wasn't that the trade wouldn't go through if you put the offer in for >5% difference, but rather you physically couldn't put an offer in for more than 5% out from the price. The only way you could have an offer in the ge that was out by more than 5% was if you had put in the offer and then the price changed.
I once gave away three Santa hats at the Falador party room…. What a mistake lol, hopfully whoever got them is enjoying them still
Good video. Only suggestion would be to add how long it took to earn enough gold to buy the hats at different stages.
Yeah sure if you want whatever is left of the player base to quit entirely from the destruction of the economy.
I remember the lending system in RS2. Glad OSRS has these for cheap again
Forgot all about that dumb update. 😂
I remember that as well, the most annoying thing was when everybody seemed to say 'Can I plz BARROW your item' instead of 'borrow' lmao
That was cool updated I used to lend items for gp and made bank lol... Osrs should have that again!
I miss that feature. I'd pay some gp to borrow a dhcb for some vork lol
Colonello, have you ever done a video on the history of RWT? Seeing the Classic version, which I remember playing when I was just a kid lol, I wonder just how far back RWT went.
RSC Halloween masks are so nostalgic, one of my best memories was picking up a blue & red Halloween mask
Nice video and yes, I stopped playing when Evolution of Combat came out, there's a reason I didn't play WOW! Still on that OSRS grind though, hoping Brighter Shores is the next big one, can't wait to play it😁
I would call manipulating the value of a product by +200-300% a huge success
I remember staking duels with phats back when I was young. Claws of guthix mage. Good ole days.
He didn't even touch Dicing. I hosted is Dragon Dyce. Just middle manned and took 10% of the pot as a trusted host. Had every rares and bought rare names. Was a wild time for me
Wait what? Dude, I think my old account has one 😂
I actually won that fish mask on the SOF way back in the day, it was definitely odd looking to wear
finally a new collenelo video
Would be hysterical if Jagex randomly gives the Goblins party hats you can pick up.
Were certificates like bank notes?
I’m pretty sure blues were never worth 42k so idk where you’re getting that figure from.
did you watch the video? They said it would've been worth 42k buying bonds and selling for gold, not black market sites
I ate a Pumpkin for the lolz in 2008 it was only like 6m back then is it really $140 now?
One of my biggest regrets is getting 2 full sets of all of the gwd1 gear when gwd1 came out instead of like a set of phats 😢
The fun you had was worth more than the phats
There’s certain things that just don’t go away. First dragon chain. First whip. First h ween and Santa. Never got an old school phat :(
thanks, i didnt know about all those factors that led to the 2008 partyhat crash. I managed to buy a yellow for 90mil during that crash, but i thought it was because of the removal of pking that month
I remember back in the day i bought a green h'ween for 300k and my buddy told me it was a waste of money and to sell it, i think that was 2004?
i have also bought green mask for 300k, i remember mined mihtril in wildy in hobgoblins area for it
Damn, I bought mine for 84m at the start of the EoC update.
@@MinisculeBug that same guy told me he sold 12 phats for full rune
I've never even played this game, but I still watched the entire video.
These game economies mimic real life anytime they have a way to do so.
A blue p hat is 2000$ . 2 years ago it was 4500 i know bc i buy n sell them . Never heard of them ever being 42g .
I didnt get a scythe for that halloween and ive bee sad ever since, finally got it today on osrs for the first time and i feel complete
I really enjoyed that video. You have a new sub
I remember staying up late to collect masks and santas. Then flipping them within 1-2 months because I was a kid and a month felt like eternity to pass up profit...
I'm making damn sure I get a blue party hat at christmas time irl this year
i remember having a red , green and yellow phat back in 06 ...good ol days
I bought up 10 fish masks back when they came out for 1 mill each and had them in the grand exchange until they finally sold for 10m ea. That took over a decade to accomplish but it happened lol
Is a 3rd age pic axe on osrs worth more than a partyhat on rs3 if you were to swap?
I remember on classic when i bought a red phat for 3.2m. I was locked in the fishing guild for weeks.
I still own my Yellow phat. I staked a whole summer and finally got to buy it and a divine for both 720M each.
it was such a mistake to not add rare items to osrs they were such good gold sinks
wdym? 3rd age fills that void completely lmao
Your pricing recollection is not true, even when purple phats were crashing on the GE they always remained around 7x the value of a Santa
Ye jagex for sure rolled back your entire account actually
yeah your recollection of prices are incorrect
@@ro0b0its not impossible. I remember a friend of mine was botting on karamja fishing swordfish and his fishing lvl got rolled back
Party hats are too expensive
Jaged "we don't know how to fix this"
Malakka just put them back in the game they will plummet
this video is quality work man
almost 10 years later, i still think about how much i regret swapping my green partyhat for Darkscape gold...
Thinking about Darkscape is a pretty dark thing ngl
Oh, regret.
Dude I remember these when I was a kid, I had so many.
