I did a few gigs playing bass with Bobby Hutcherson in the early 70s in San Francisco and his approach to jazz then was exactly the same. No charts, no set arrangements. I was to set up a solid groove pattern on the spot and stick to it no matter what. I was 19 years old and it was the first time I'd ever played live outside of a rehearsal studio and I have no idea why he picked me to play, but I'm very honored that he did. For Bobby it was all about spontaneity, experimentation, feel and groove.

PSA: For some time, the 1st 3 Eyewitness albums were OOP, hard-to-find, etc. Recently, for less than $20, all 3 are available on a 2-cd set.
Another thing I like about Khan's guitar-ing > He usually doesn't voice chords with the 2ea Low Strings (E-A). This gives the bassist a huge amount of responsibility & freedom. A guy with big ears like AJ is the perfect musician for this group.

Anthony Jackson (before I knew who he was!) used to come to my gigs at the long-defunct Melody Lounge in Washington Heights, NYC. He was unassuming, polite and always had this sense of approval at what he was hearing. It wasn't until a few years later in a session at Electric Lady Studios with Steve Gadd,, Dave Grusin and the late and amazing jazz flute player and dear friend -Dave Valentin that I realized that it was HE (Jackson) who I was already going wild over in recordings with everyone! What a player! What a technician! His playing on the title tune of the above-mentioned session - Legends - was simply phenomenal! I was all of 19 years of age and still very wet behind the gills but I will never ever forget that experience!!!

Thank you sooooooooo much for using your platform to give visibility to this band! AJ has done so much tremendous work but I tell people... "you haven't heard Anthony Jackson or Steve Jordan until you've heard them with Steve Khan, in the Eyewitness band on the albums Eyewitness, Blades and Casa Loco".
Eyewitness was one of those records that really took me on an rhythmospheric ride. IMO they were the epitome of what a modern electric improvising combo could do. No other jazz-fusion combo had such unique voices. Don't get me wrong... hat's off the Chick and the Electric Band but, minimal arrangement and production was actually the Eyewitness band's strength. The space between the notes is played brilliantly! Marks of true masters! Yes, I'm gushing but, that band deserves it.
Another band, in a similar vein, around that same time, which got even less notice that Eyewitness (yes, it's possible) but with musicians just as fantastic is the Wayne Johnson Trio w/Jimmy Johnson on bass and Bill Berg on drums. Check out the title cut "Grasshopper". Anyone with a heart and an ear won't sit still listening to it!
People though fusion was dead history in the late 80's. Not hardly.

The Eyewitness albums are great! The sum of the amazing parts is greater than one could expect or imagine. Their "dialogue" style Improvisation and the interplay throughout the tunes is 🔥🔥🔥
AJ is next level: anyone else and these albums would not have been as impactful

Gotta love some Steve Khan stuff! He always brings out a lot of brilliance from the musicians he's played and recorded as a leader. His are very unlike your typical guitar albums. He has a pretty chill style and some really nice harmonies and voicings coming from out of nowhere. And the latest stuff is still fire. The percussion section is always amazing.
I don't know if he's done transcriptions of the bass parts, but he has a whole lot of transcribed solos not only from guitar but other instruments as well from his own recording and other stuff.

Love this channel. All of my favorite music discussed and broken down. My life long friend Tom Guarna studied with Steve Khan many years ago. A few years ago I was shopping in a Staten Island Shoprite and I ran into Anthony Jackson. He walked passed me in the supermarket and I said out loud, that looks just like Anthony Jackson, hoping he would hear me. He didn't respond but someone he was with said, it was Anthony. He had just went through what I think was a Stroke but I'm not sure. He was very kind and let me take a photo but was not talking much. I had seen him play with Michel Camilo so many times at Mikell's and also with Eyewitness at a NYC studio show. Chaka actually showed up to see him at that show. Keep up the great work.

Wonderful video, man. I remember the first time I heard this song - it was on The Suitcase Live record with Steve, Anthony, and Dennis Chambers. I was so excited when it was released because I had recently become intrigued with Anthony's work and was trying to dig up anything I could find with him on it. In 2008, it was a lot harder to find such info than it is now. Where's Mumphrey is the first track on that live album, and my 18 year old self was FLOORED when I heard it.

The performance of this track on the live album "The Suitcase" is really cool, and features Dennis Chambers on drums. Even with the excellent explanation here of the bass and drums, it's hard to figure out where "one" is during both the studio and live performances of this track.

Not many people know this I believe, due to the fact that he not known(on records anyway)for doing so, but he had a command of playing Funk bass in the Larry Graham style as well! I saw him play a little bit at one of the music stores on what was it, 52nd street, decades ago(around 1995 maybe, when I lived in NYC then); he was about ten feet away from me-but was right in front of me, and so I got to both see and hear what he could do with the Funk as well.
Why he never promoted his ability to play this style on any of his recordings back in the 70s/80s/90s baffles me to this day maybe he did and I never found out about the recording(s). I think about what Jesus said also, about not 'snuffing out' your light(i.e., gifts and talents-especially when you've worked to develop them)but letting it(the light)shine-He specifically called it 'not putting your candle under a bush or bed, but putting it where it can give what it was designed to do-give light to the room in which there is darkness otherwise' (Matt. 5:13-15).
Well, that's about it for now-just thought any of you who are fans of Anthony Jackson would be interested in seeing this, which I recollect of that day, when I saw him play like Larry Graham; and he was good at it! 4-26-23.

Remember buying this lp in 1983 ? Used to go to a shop in Wardour Street that sold mostly Classical music but had a Jazz section. Got this lp and bought the new Miles Davis Star People another day.. This lp is wild , sometimes sounding a bit like the Police? Is that auxiliary police? Steve Jordan playing great stuff , then he starts that whole rock n roll Keith Richards journey. Wonder if we can ever see him playing like this these days? I love the cover art too. Great album

"One" is always "one" where AJ's part is concerned. He is locked into it, and you can easily follow it through the entire tune. Under Kahn's solo, AJ does his typical "off the reservation" exploration of unexpected notes that work perfectly and make him the most interesting bassist alive today, but he still keeps the one distinct as he comes full circle to the original feel. A song like this was never scripted or rehearsed. During this era, fusion with a band like this was all about experimenting and seeing where the music could go with a room full of virtuoso musicians who listened to each other and played off each other's cues. I can see it now...drums starts out with what he was feeling, AJ comes in playing a line off the cuff, and Kahn spontaneously comes up with a melody, and it is off to the races from there. In the end, everyone is still anchored to the one by Anthony's rhythm.

Thank you so much for being a friend in touch talking jazz . Most of the time in life I have to turn myself off because if I started talking about Steve Khan or Woody Shaw . Or Anthony the con …. Ver sa…. tion would be awkward and I get ignored. But then I go home and listen to this stuff. Saw Manolo live at Ronnie Scott’s in 1998 with Zawinul . I mean talk about another level it’s frightening. Airto was another guy who took me to the depths of the Amazon rainforest at a Ronnies gig right there with reverb and off mic stuff . One of my faves too! I heard this for the first time around the same time I heard Chick Corea's "Three Quartets." These two albums shaped my brain in profound ways. I couldn't decide (as a 12 year old) whether to give up drums, or give up guitar, or both. (I stuck with violin, haha).
Even more strange, as a fan of Letterman, was to see Steve Jordan take up the drum mantle with Will Lee! I stayed up way past my bed-time just to hear them play the intro, and the bits before and after commercial breaks!
Sports. Baseball. You went there. Stranger still is the tune titled Guy Lafleur. Who was the hockey fan? As a Canadian (who hated hockey), this puzzled me immensely.
And it must be said, the production on this album was superb. It sounds fresh, bereft of the questionable choices that reigned over this era. This could have been recorded yesterday, sounds so fresh. And what can one say about their playing? It's the stuff I still aspire to all these years later. :)
    Amazing spotlight man.

They came into the studio to play on a song called Peninsula by Oscar Castro Neves. They listened to the demo, sketched it out and with 2 takes nailed it with a killer solo by Gadd ! Legendary performance!

My favorite track on the album is another one named after a sports star- "Guy Lafleur".

Thanks so much for this. I didn’t know the album or the group, and you’ve given me a taste for how much there is to learn from the shifting syncopation in this track.
