Contra, or Gryzor as we in the UK would have known it, became the template for the modern run-and-gun shooter. Although it started life in the arcade, the NES home conversion was really the catalyst that cemented the legacy of the series; in short, it's a classic.
What I didn't know was there was arcade-based follow-up. Super Contra released somewhere between '87 and '88, and it's a genuinely excellent sequel to the original game.
The overall game design hasn't changed much. You still run, shoot and somersault your way through a series of levels, collecting different weapons as you go, before transitioning to a Commando-esque top-down section that replaces the third-person corridor stages from the original.
Thanks to some top artwork, decent sound, not to mention some of the meatiest and most satisfying explosions to grace a coin-op cab, Super Contra is a great romp. It's only problem is that it's so darned short!! With only a handful of stages, the game is over before it's really begun.
Regardless, Super Contra is great fun and definitely worth a few quarters!

Fun facts : This is the first time in the Contra series that weapon upgrades have been introduced, similar to what was introduced in Contra 4 (re-collecting the weapon to upgrade it).

Was this feature in the NES version of Super C? I don't remember it being there.
@@justino8935 In the NES version, there is no weapon upgrade system, only collecting R (Rapid Fire) to increase shooting speed.
If you played Contra 4, you'll understand immediately.

Konami didn't even bothered to clear it up, they made a Aliens' run n' gun!

Just to give you a headsup, AL: If you aren't using the latest MAME version, it would be time to update it, at version 0.239 is where they fixed the music tempo from some Konami games, Super Contra is one of them.
I was listening to super contra OST and wondering why it doesn't sound that upbeat and i bet Xmen arcade is like that too
@@Ifalvarado I dont think Xmen got afected before the 0.239 update, it was still fine.
Also, the other flaw you can notice from the slowed down tempo in Super Contra is that, if you listen to the opening, the alien scream sound plays when the game logo shows which is wrong, it suposted to play before the screen change, this goes to show that the alien scream sound was connected to the opening music.
I didnt know Contra was in the arcades. Cool!

It's actually nice to see you play around with the weapon powerups, you know, rather than simply getting the double auto on the first stage and subsequently breaking the whole game in the process. Heh, much like I used to, back in the late 80s when I first played it on the night shift at Tesco. (^w^)
Yeah, I was thinking why he hasn't kept the spreadgun because I would have kept it. The game looks hard as hell.
@@mokkorista This is one of the few Contra games were spread isn't ideal - too slow and limited range. Stacked rockets are the way to go on this game.

This looks decent, but I've found 2 animation related things somewhat laughable. First on platforming levels the movement animation isn't properly synched with the actual scroll speed, so it looks like the player is trying to run on ice as his feet fail sticking to the ground. The 2nd thing is that all humanoids, inluding the alien clones strip down to a puprle puppet in the same falling back pose that explodes into spagethi. On an arcade game - even one as old as this one - I expect proper animation synch with screen scrolling and multiple kill poses.

The big explosions look impressive but the rest of the game looks like a cheap DOS game IMO

I'm wondering if the art style and colour palette was a deliberate choice to stay faithful to the original - I'm sure they didn't have to stick with that grey overtone if they didn't want to
