  • I'm really concerned this rare part can't be saved. The master cylinder for the brakes on the abandoned 1962 AMC Rambler Classic Deluxe is seized. We need to remove it from the car, disassemble it & inspect it to see if it can be saved. We will rebuild the master cylinder if the bore inside can be honed. Trouble is the seized pistons don't want to come out. This is a one year only part. If it's not rebuildable I'll be devastated.

Howdy, I watched every second. I got into a 1968 MGB/GT with a tandem master once and it is a messy difficult job. Kits are easy to find for those but you're in a one of a kind world here. I'll be tuned in to see how you assemble the restoration parts for this and do I ever hope you get this working and sealed! Bobby

Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment. We'll see how it goes, I guess. Maybe lady luck will be good to us.

Not to fear if you can''t rebuild it yourself. Cadillac also used this master cylinder in 62. I got mine from Cadillac Parts Limited. They have re sleeved rebuilt ones. You need to send in yours for a core. I had no luck in getting one from the various AMC vendors out there.

Ok I took note of that & I appreciate it. '62 seems to be the year the AMC vendors don't have much of anything for.

That grease gun made a sound very similar to Uncle Albert (Beatles). I'm also sorry Uncle Freeman for the anticlimactic non exploding pistons.

Now that's a song I haven't listened to in a very long time. You can't have chaos & destruction every time I suppose.

the nylon sleeve is bonded to the cast iron, there are no more circlips.

I didn’t think there was. I’ve never taken this particular master cylinder apart before but it wouldn’t make sense to have more than one clip.

I take it you learn as you go? Pretty clever with the grease for piston extraction...Glad you were satisfied. What do you do for a living..?

Pretty much. Yeah, I'm glad it worked out. I work for an HVAC/Plumbing company in NV.

Sleeperdude use a master cylinder from a dodge mini van . That works and it cheap mechanical one. This car is nice but hard to find parts for good luck 🍀.

Interesting. I'll have to jot that down. That info could come in handy if the rebuild doesn't go well. Thanks for watching & commenting.

Clever use of a grease gun. You could have avoided using the pick and bolt by filling the cylinders as full as possible with brake fluid. If you ever have to do this again, pipe plugs are available at Home Depot/Lowes

I think you should have just converted it to a more modern solution. You spent 3 days and wasted grease on it. It's not ever going to be worth more than you put into it.

I completely get that. I’m technically losing money spending time on it but It was worth it to me because I want to see that original master cylinder when I open the hood. Plus the car appears to be pretty complete & original so I’m trying to keep it that way. The good thing is I didn’t spend 3 or 4 entire days on it. It was a touch it for 15-30 minutes then let it soak overnight kind of thing.
