I had a two outdoor ponds I attempted this year. I was amazed at how well those acrylic lids worked at keeping the water from freezing. Unfortunately I went on vacation for a week in late January, wind blew off the two lids, and both ponds froze solid :(. Learned I need to weigh down the lid :(

Excited for a winter ricefish video! I've wondered what you do other than cover with plexiglass. My medaka are already carrying eggs over here in Charleston, South Carolina USA! The mini ponds got a few mm of ice once or twice, and emerged plant growth froze solid and melted, but things are bouncing back with lots of bright green growth now. Would love to see a spring update when the fish are split back up and if anything in particular is done to guide specific breeding or if you cull/remove any and how you decide.

You got me in the ricefish hobby last year and is working out ok. I can only get the Youkihi type so far. Thx for the video....helped me a lot. They eat the frys so the water hyacinth is a big plus to put in another tank and raise em. Can't leave them outside though....temp here goes below -32C so Rice popsicle anyone? Also they are good with Adult Cherry shrimps if you are not breeding the shrimps because they will eat the shrimplets. I'm setting up a community tank with smaller fishes.

Won't the algae produce enough oxygen? Similar situation as an ecosphere I would guess. The fish will be alright regardless though, since they hibernate, tortoises dig themselves underground, not much oxygen there either, I would think... :) All their body-functions slow down, so they don't need much of anything during this period.

so, from what you said, because these rice fishes are free or very cheap, you can treat them like sh*t, let them die without caring. but if they were expensive, you would care for them better. that is simply the worse thing to say. basically, you care for some fish because they are expensive, not because they are living creatures. basically, you say you value your fish according to their economical value... I wonder if you value your friends or people the same way???

Yeah, it does kind of sound bad. But would you put a 100 dollar fish in an outdoor pond and risk a bird eating it? Or it jumping out? I never said that I would care for them better. Ricefish actually do better outdoors when they get direct sunlight. Most pro breeders breed rice fish outdoors. I'd just be more worried to lose a 100 dollar ricefish than a 50 cent feeder ricefish

@@RyoWatanabee 100% correct. You have to care more because you are breeding a rare pair and If It's only a pair then that would be a disaster. But once you get thousands of em then some will go outdoor without care. I breed fishes too and will care for the rare pairs. Your Uncles been breeding fish outdoor for so long now and I think some viewers don't realize this.

I was assuming the worst from the title of this video! So glad they're good and just hibernating. My ricefish here in the US southeast are also doing well. What kind of bird eats the oranges? I looked online and it looks like a Mejiro/warbling white eye. I'm a bit of a bird nerd so just wondering. I've seen Baltimore Orioles eat oranges in the states.
