Love the ft. with your uncle, would love to see more if he is willing? I know lillies come back each year but what other plants do? Do you add back any plants each warm season?
I had a two outdoor ponds I attempted this year. I was amazed at how well those acrylic lids worked at keeping the water from freezing. Unfortunately I went on vacation for a week in late January, wind blew off the two lids, and both ponds froze solid :(. Learned I need to weigh down the lid :(
Haha thanks Blake :) winter months are always slow with the ricefish ponds. The ricefish hide at the bottom so you can’t really see them and I hate filming outside in the cold weather 😅 that’s why I don’t make videos of them that much
@@RyoWatanabee as your winter is coming to a close mine is just beginning 😄 i also have a couple of outdoor olive barrel ponds with medaka and they over winter well down here as well (but yes some green water and dead aquatic plants as well)

Thanks for sharing. I am in our first 6 months with these fish and learning all the time, every little bit of information helps. This video helps a great deal thank you for showing the reality of winter outdoor ponds in your climate.
Yeah, no problem. The pond is a mess during the winter because all the plants die back but we just leave them alone. When spring comes. The lilies naturally grow back and we do a big cleaning. I’ll try to make a video when we do that
Excited for a winter ricefish video! I've wondered what you do other than cover with plexiglass. My medaka are already carrying eggs over here in Charleston, South Carolina USA! The mini ponds got a few mm of ice once or twice, and emerged plant growth froze solid and melted, but things are bouncing back with lots of bright green growth now. Would love to see a spring update when the fish are split back up and if anything in particular is done to guide specific breeding or if you cull/remove any and how you decide.
@@RyoWatanabee yea, over here in the US nobody has them and they're hard to find any to purchase, so there is some anxiety about keeping them and not loosing them or their colors.
