Live Stream 3pm Sunday17th October (GMT). If you have any questions on this video, post them here and we can discuss them on Sunday :) The video went up a bit laterr than expected, I couldn't get the GoPro to work. The next Pond video will be me gutting it out, cleaning it and transferring some of the fish back indoors into a newly scaped (with houseplants) tank! :)
Lovely to see somebody in the UK showing us Rice Fish. I am looking to start a patio pond using a wine barrel and these little fish sound perfect. Thanks for taking time to share your experience, I am now convinced Rice Fish are perfect for our project. Stay safe, John & Josie.
Hi, Daisy rice fish males turn dark blue, nearly black. Its a dominance display. Im British but live on the 23rd floor here in Singapore. I keep gold lame, sunset halfmoon, champagne and deep sea (deep blue)medaka. Great fun. In these temperatures they breed all year round. Love your channel,subbed...🙂
Have introduced 6 Medaka’s to my mums pond which is quite large and well stocked with plants and natural livestock. You are right they are the walk past fish just like Normans Lampeter and other killie type fish as they do not display well in the shop but when settled ..wow. Love the containers keep it up.
I think people walk past Medaka in the shop because many of them are meant to be viewed from above, not from the side, unless they are long finned varieties.
Hi Keith! So glad you enjoyed this one! I'll make sure to do some more updates.. they are a bit more active now. The aim is to encourage them to breed this year 🥰🤞🏾 Do you have some already?
@@CloudGardenerUK I have a few varieties and mini ponds. They are great pond fish and i keep them with goldfish too.If you lived closer I would give you some. But I'm in California 😅✌
I have these fish as well! I have different colour types, though. I love these fish, even though they cost me an arm and a leg. Getting eggs is the cheapest way to go, and breeding them is a breeze. For keeping these guys year round outside, the 'real' medaka (Oryzias latipes) are the best. The Daisy's rice fish (Oryzias woworae) probably won't survive the winter in the UK, since they prefer higher temperatures. The growth of your fry looks really nice! Outdoor tubs work miracles for these fish, due to the abundance of microfoods for them. Do keep us updated on them!
I knew you would love this video! 🥰🥰 They are the most awesome little fish. So underrated! The 2 daisy fish will definitely be coming inside if they ever leave the greenery 🤦🏾♀️ They are both confirmed to be breeding females so they'll be going into the scaped tank indoors before winter with a couple of others. Are yours inside? Hopefully we can see some spawning next year too! Another new facet to the channel! ❤
I have platinum Medaka in a 4ft long by 2ft by 2ft heavily indigenous planted raised pond vessel in my yard. They have not only survived but thrived in the last 2yrs outside and been covered in both thick snow and ice these 2 just gone UK winters. Brilliant for eating gnats etc. Started off with 7 now got 50 plus
Thank you so very much for showing me how to keep these fascinating and easy to keep fish. I have not got the space for a big pond, so this is truly inspirational. You are a wonderful and enthusiastic presenter. Blessings to you.
I am soo glad that the video helped! They can be very expensive so if you can grow some more from eggs even better :) I hope it all goes well for you and thank you for watching & commenting ❤
You won't find any now as it's too cold for them to breed. They need warmer water. Each fish is around £8 on its own.. so you are better off waiting till Spring and you should soon start to find listings. 🥰
thx for the video.....as long as the water in the container doesn't fully freeze (put an acrylic/plastic sheet on top of the container so snow wont go over it), they will be ok outside. I can't seem to get a miyuki around where I live....I only have the orange ones.
Love this video🤩 reminds me of when I use to have an aquarium and all my trips to the aquarium shop to get the stuff I needed and also how I use to love spending time just looking at my fish swim. Great video, thanks for sharing👍🏾
Yeah! You can get lost just watching them. Will you get another? That was the first ever footage of them that I had seen. So it was so cool to be able to share that with all of you 🥰
Such a lovley video! I set up a very similar experience back in 2020. I couldn't find any rice fish anywhere and ordered some eggs on ebay. Most hatched but there didn't last much beyond a month :( - I thought I'd give it another go and to my surprise I found your video of someone else in Britain who's given it a go and been successful! I love your patio! I wanted to ask how is your daisy blue rice doing? I'm curious because to my understand they're from Indonesia and used to much warmer climates! Also how is your goldfish doing? Thank you for your inspiring video!
Did the daisy rice fish manage outdoors? I got them first accidentally but I was then told they were different and needed warmer water. Now I’m trying with normal rice fish just inside near my window for some natural light 💡
Beautiful pond! I've been looking into doing a nano tank or ecosphere and have been absolutely charmed by these rice fish. I am now trying to figure out if I can set something up for them outside so I can go bigger. :D
@@CloudGardenerUK Yes, but all the fish shops here have them in heated tanks, so I've decided to wait until spring/summer to make the transition easier for them. Thanks for asking!
@@CloudGardenerUK OMG, I was at Aquarium Coop (which is an excellent shop near me) yesterday & they had a great stock of medaka. Sadly, I'm not ready for them, but I'm hopeful they will have some when I am. I just bought a 14 gal aquarium & will stock some in that, then raise any fry from them for outdoors. They had some gorgeous platinums that i'm particularly interested in.
They are awesome little guys! Winter hardy too so no faffing around. Cause its out of season they seem to be pretty expensive atm though. Let me know how you get on! 💪🏾
Daisy’s rice fish are not as cold tolerant as the Japanese medaka rice fish, I hope they are okay. They come from Singapore, which I think is more warmer and tropical.

Absolutely loved this video.
I'm absolutely sold on the fish especially as they'll take care of the mosquito larvae! Thank you for sharing!

Nice job! Let me know something, are ok for daisy's ricefish outside at winter?
Love your video. Where did you get your Rice fish from, I live near Chester and cannot get them anywhere
I ordered the eggs online but you can but the adults from Maidenhead Aquatics if you have one nearby? :)
Love your pond and your fish! I was wandering, could i use some of my aquarium water to fertilise my plants?
What plants do you have in the pond, the ones under the surface? I’m looking for different plants for my medaka ponds. Great channel.
I finally got some and if I can breed them the fish store I got them said they’ll buy em from me cuz there so hard to find where I live

But maybe they can live freezing temperatures.. you don't know if you don't try it..
They have light all day.. it’s Proper selfish to have a light on at night, clueless
