Kyphosis is a spinal curvature that bends away from the body's center. A kyphosis is normal in the thoracic spine when it is in the 20-40 degrees range. Hyper Kyphosis is when the curvature exceeds this normal range.
Kyphosis can affect different areas of the spine. In the cervical spine, you are supposed to have lordosis, where it bends forward. In some cases, it can bend backward and be called a kyphosis. It would not be referred to as hyperkyphosis, and there are no circumstances where it would be considered normal in this area.
In the lumbar spine, you are also supposed to have lordosis, but if it were to bend backward you could be diagnosed with lumbar Kyphosis. In the case of hyperkyphosis, it is that the thoracic spine is extending more than its normal range.
The symptoms of Kyphosis start with excessive rounding of the upper back and shoulders. This condition can also be referred to as roundback or hunchback. And the first symptom is a postural misalignment.
It is most common in boys over girls in the growth stage, but it can also show in adults as a result of bad ergonomics or injury. Because of technology and daily life, since we spend more of our time sitting instead of moving, we're seeing this type of posture occur earlier in life because of our constant repetition of time leaning on computers and laptops. In addition to posture misalignment, it can lead to pain as the spine is inefficient in carrying itself when it has a round back. When you have asymmetrical side alignment, these curves act in symmetry, so your body is efficient in dealing with gravity. When you have one that is either too big or bending the wrong way, it can lead to muscle pain, strain, and back pain because of the inefficiency occurring. It can also cause inefficiency in standing or sitting for long periods of time, leading to fatigue as your body does not have the normal endurance. It can also affect your gait and the way you walk, leading to improper balance.
As these changes start to manifest and progress, it can get to the point where you may need kyphosis surgery, which is an invasive surgery. They use rods and screws and bone grafts to fuse multiple vertebrae together, and its goal is to prevent progression. When surgery is being performed, they can sometimes do some reduction depending on the age of the patient & size of the Kyphosis. But the main goal is to remove material from the spine & move it to closer to a normal alignment then use rods & screws to help hold the spine, then use bone grafts to fuse the spine together so it becomes a more permanent fusion that doesn't require the screws & rods to maintain the position.
As with any surgery, there are risks involved, such as, losing function in the spine; since it will not be able to move as intended. The costs are also a factor as surgery costs an average of 175 thousand dollars, although it would depend on the patient and any complications that are associated with the surgery. Some patients seek non-surgical options because they are concerned with the effects the surgery can have not only in their day-to-day but long term in their futures.
There are non-surgical & non-invasive approaches to managing Kyphosis. However, the most important factor is to treat kyphosis promptly when the curve is smaller as this would produce a much better outcome than letting the curve get severe.
The approach is much more effective when one doctor prescribes & coordinates all aspects of treatment to ensure the best outcome. It also adds more benefits such as lower cost when compared to surgery, less invasive, & tries to preserve spinal health & function. As there are fewer side effects, there are less risks involved in treatment, so it would be a practical approach to try before the curve worsens & the need for surgery arises.

I’ve been dealing with kyphosis since I was a kid. My mother took me to multiple doctors and they all told her that there’s no need to put a brace on me and no need for surgery or anything. They told her I would grow out of it. I’m turning 30 this year and it has never gotten better. I have a hunchback and I hate it. If I try standing up straight and holding my back straight it just becomes very painful. To the point where my back will go numb. I’ve tried everything throughout the years from exercising my back, sleeping flat on the floor etc etc, and nothing has worked. I wish it would have gotten taken care of when I was a kid. But now I’m sure I just need surgery to fix it
