When looking at spinal alignment, we must understand that the spine is not designed to be straight from the side; it is designed to be curved. This makes the spine stronger, more flexible, and better able to absorb and distribute mechanical stress that occurs during movement and as a result of gravity constantly pushing down in your spine.
The types of spinal curvatures we are designed to have are the three main sections of the spine. The cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine each have their own curvature associated with it.
The cervical spine and lumbar spine are supposed to have a lordosis
The thoracic spine is supposed to have a kyphosis
In a lordosis, the spinal curvature bends to the front, while a kyphosis bends towards the back. If the curve is less than normal, it is considered a hypo, or if greater than normal, a hyper. If it is bending the wrong way, then it is inverted.
Lordosis is meant to be in both the cervical and lumbar spine; they give us the normal arch we have in the neck and low back. In the cervical spine this normal bending can be 20-40 degrees. The dial range is 40.
The lumbar spine's normal range is 40-60. if a person falls within these normal values, they have lordosis. If the numbers are greater, it would be a hyperlordosis; if they fall below, they have a hypo lordosis.
A thoracic lordosis is when your spine starts to bend toward the front; that is called thoracic lordosis. Since you are not supposed to have lordosis in the thoracic spine at all, it is simply called thoracic lordosis. When this area starts to bend forward, it can lead to many different types of issues.
The cause can range from posture to congenital or even post-surgical.
Symptoms can be seen, such as the abdomen and chest being more pronounced. It can lead to back pain and nerve and mobility issues. Very often, thoracic lordosis is commonly associated with scoliosis.
When the patient has lordosis in the thoracic spine, it can also predispose the patient to cervical kyphosis and Spondylolisthesis in the lumbar spine. This is when one of the bones in the lumbar spine moves forward because normal kyphosis causes an abnormal load in the lumbar area which can lead to Spondylolisthesis and back pain.
You should be proactive with thoracic lordosis, seeking how to reshape the spine back into alignment and understanding what is causing it to be able to start a treatment program that can produce a better outcome by reshaping your spine back into its correct alignment.
At Scoliosis Reduction Center, we provide a customized treatment approach for every patient, regardless of their spinal condition. Our goal is to restore normal alignment and maintain it with proper care.

Thank you for addressing this! I’ve had this since I was a teenager but no one has ever done anything about it. A physical therapist first diagnosed me while I was being treated for something else.
