The human spine is engineered for strength and flexibility, featuring curves that absorb and distribute mechanical stress. From the front, the spine should appear straight, but from the side, it reveals its natural curvatures: lordosis in the cervical and lumbar regions, and kyphosis in the thoracic region. These curvatures are essential for the spine's mechanical integrity under the force of gravity.
Lordosis is the inward curvature of the spine, seen in the cervical and lumbar regions. A healthy cervical lordosis ranges between 20 and 40 degrees, with 40 degrees as the ideal. For the lumbar spine, the healthy range is between 40 and 60 degrees. Deviations outside these ranges are termed as hypolordosis (too straight) or hyperlordosis (excessive curvature), affecting spinal function and posture.
Kyphosis refers to the outward curve of the thoracic spine, resembling a reverse C-shape. A normal kyphotic curve ranges from 20 to 40 degrees. Hyperkyphosis, characterized by a curve greater than 45 degrees, leads to a pronounced round-back appearance. Hypokyphosis, on the other hand, is when the thoracic curve is too flat, deviating from the normal range.
Scoliosis is identified by a sideways curvature of the spine, making it appear as an "S" or "C" from the front. It is a three-dimensional condition, involving not just a lateral bend but also a rotational aspect. Scoliosis is progressive and considered abnormal when the curvature exceeds 10 degrees. Although incurable, early treatment can significantly manage its progression and reduce its impact.
Spinal conditions can stem from postural misalignments, which are often correctable, or structural changes, which are more complex and persistent. Structural conditions do not resolve with simple posture adjustments and require a more comprehensive treatment approach to address the underlying spinal deformities.
Treatment for structural spinal conditions goes beyond basic physiotherapy or chiropractic care, incorporating a variety of therapies aimed at reducing structural deviations. Early intervention can prevent the need for invasive surgeries, which come with their own risks and complications. At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we have over 20 years of experience treating scoliosis and other spinal conditions non-surgically, emphasizing the potential to avoid spinal surgery through effective conservative treatment.
