The second smaller fireplace in the dining room was probably built when the then owners (unlikely to be tenants) moved from wood as their main fuel to coal. Coal needs a more powerful draw of air to burn efficiently, so needed smaller chimneys. Although rather narrow, it could have included the most basic form of cast iron grate for cooking.
The fireplace in the sitting room was kept larger because it was common to use coal for cooking, but continue to use wood for heating. Coal is dirtier than wood, so people liked their best room to be kept free of coal smuts.

In the US, when you renovate a room, the Building Inspectors require that the room be brought up to the most current code. I cannot imagine how that would work in a house like this.

Painful to watch. Whilst obvious improvements were made, this is a prime example of overdoing it, turning a period property into a shell with modern hotel interior. Money doesn’t buy taste, whilst ‘expense’ seems to be a statement. Plus the guy was wearing a neckerchief.

The windows are awful in the kitchen, more grey plastic, brutalism in window form. What a way to take away the historical characteristics of the cottage, they have not kept its history, as all that plaster on the walls makes it look like a hotel suite. Bland and grey, architecture and good historical design are now thing of the past. As every building must now look exactly the same, if not on the outside, then on the inside.
