Yeah, I think this revolver was something in the vicinity of $650. The rifle generally runs about $150 now days, but still that's a big difference in price.

I'd like to see a 22 mag vs 32 long comparison.
I think bullet design really matters. Some bullets are designed with optimal velocity range where they can inflict the most damage, and either too slow or too fast will affect it. No matter if it's 22 LR or 22 WMR, if the bullets isn't ideal for the gun, the result would be suboptimal. Forgot to add: powder amount and composition also of course matters. Some ammo are designed for either long or short barrel depending on the speed of their burn and deflagration.
2 very accomplished trainers Haggard and Bolke mentioned this as almost all the shootings with a 10/22 they responded to (or info shared from other trainers across the country) was fatal where the same round out of a shorter snub not so much (barring shot placement) and 22 Mag shootings out of handguns were up there with the 22lr in a rifle. I have seen the aftermaths is a couple 22lr rifle shootings in my own LE career and they were also fatal.
Not a perfect comparison, but I think it proves the point… I’ve had guys argue with me that 22WMR out of a revolver has less power than a 22LR out of a pistol because the extra powder blows past the rifling and it ends up being slower… I think I’m gonna point them to this video from now on :)

A large cylinder gap (amount of open space between the cylinder face and the forcing cone of the barrel) will adversely affect velocity. I've seen one video of a Rough Rider revolver that had this problem. When fired from a closed breech handgun such as a semiauto pistol, less gas escapes, meaning the projectile might be faster. It really depends on how close the tolerances are. This also is true of the bore. Some bores form a tighter seal with the projectile, which can translate into higher velocities.

And to any one that shot animals with the 22lr out of a rifle and the 22mag out of a handgun has seen it in action.
I all ways thought the 22mag out of a handgun was better than the 22lr out of a rifle. Because of 2 bullets the 40gr fmj and the 50gr sp.

A cop who has worked many homicides said that .22 mag is the current king of kills on the streets. He also referenced a statistic that shows that 22l lr when fired from a 10-22 has a 100% 1 shot kill rate. His point was that caliber doesn't matter; it's all shot placement & penetration. Now, I'm not sure if I buy that 100%, but if you compare my real world experience which is nil, to his which spans decades, I find myself reluctant to disagree, if only partially.

I choreographed my Ruger 10/22 and Single Six convertible 5.5" long time ago. Would carry the Single Six woodsroaming and as sidearm when carrying a centerfire rifle during deer season for close in small game. Would also hunt with a Marlin 783 in .22 WMR

Been waiting for a rifle vs. handgun comparison.
The hottest .22LR I know of in 40gr are Aguila Interceptor, CCI Velocitor, and Winchester Super-X Hypervelocity. They are all rated north of 1400 fps from a rifle. I'm guessing your common 22wmr would be very nearly the same again, with a 6" or more barrel.
I'd love to see a test between .357mag in a revolver vs. lever action. But, I know leveractions are expensive these days (Rossi is probably the most affordable).
This is something I have studied quite awhile. My conclusion was that 2 to 3 inch barrel handguns were best suited for high velocity 22 LR ammo, 25 ACP, or 32 ACP. Barrel lengths over 4 inches changed the equation substantially. The 22 magnum is best utilized in longer barrels where it performs mag…nificently. There is a reason for small 22 autos as well as 22 and 32 revolvers. The under appreciated 25 ACP and 32 ACP will make a comeback. They are very cool little auto cartridges. BB is making self defense loads for 32 Smith and Wesson Long, and BB and Federal are making the 25 ACP capable again. Little snubs and Autos are the easiest thing to actually carry anywhere. Gun Sam. Winchester 22 mag 40 grn jacketed hollow point is good stuff. I have a Winchester 9422m. And it's deadly on groundhogs to 150 yards. I have a 1-5 Leopold scope on it. Very accurate. And smooth. 😊

I was going to pick up one of those rifles for a lightweight 22 but went with a Winchester Wildcat bc it takes Ruger mags. I've found the Herter's 36 grain HP in 22 LR is incredibly reliable and also inexpensive. The box says they're plated but they also have a yellow wax on them. I buy boxes of them whenever they pop up at Bass Pro because of their reliability in my rifle and the low cost. I've found that they expand reliably when I shoot them into my pool but water is kind of a best case scenario so take it with a grain of salt.
One conclusion - the 22 mag from a handgun and 22 LR from a rifle are no slouches when it comes to penetration and tumbling disruption. Thanks for this very interesting test. Question - has anyone cleaned the Rossi 22LR rifle and if so, how complicated is it? Easier than a Ruger 10-22 ?
Iirc the Rossi is a near carbon copy of the Marlin semi auto.

Seems like a .22 WMR hollow point in a handgun offers a fair compromise if .22 rimfire power is what you need for some purpose. I have a High Standard 9 round .22 WMR revolver I bought many years ago (half century) and this perspective on power relative to a .22 LR in a rifle is useful. It's just a can plinker - rimfire disqualifies it as anything like a defense round in my book - that almost never sees the light of day, thanks to absurdly high priced .22 WMR ammunition, but this comparison is an object lesson to file away in the back of my mind. I'll actually be pretty surprised if this DOESN'T prove to be true. I've shot a LOT of .22 LR and .22 WMR, shortie WMR seems pretty consistent with rifle LR.
Excellent test. An 3" LCR in 22lr teamed up with an rifle in 22lr is an formidable setup from up close to about 100yds. The upshot of 22lr over 22WMR is the weaker sister has much better economy and logistics at the moment.

EDITED TO ADD: I wonder what .22 WMR would do out of a SuperWrangler or the S&W M&P .22 WMR since they have longer barrels. Is that extra barrel length enough to make a difference?

Hi Sam, the .22 rifle results are quite impressive, people keep saying it is a stupid choice for defense, survival, and so on, but it seems to me it isn't such a stupid choice. In a way, it is a better choice than a .45 acp pocket pistol or a lightweight .357 magnum snubby. I think the .22 mag. revolver is cool but I'd rather have it in .32 S&W long.

Another good video. Before watching I had predicted no way the mag would compete with the 18" 22lr. Kinda shocked here.
A shoulder fired weapon will be more effective, even with slightly less power, but it is harder to get in and out of close quarters. If we all rode horseback or in a buckboard wagon like Lucas McCain the rifle is fine, but in a Camry or Civic, the handgun gets the nod in most cases.

Now when you have a 22Lr rifle you can make some really great comparison's. My most interest there is between rifle and a pistol (mine is 5.5"), but it should be possible to try 22Lr rifle, pistol and a revolver in the same video.

Very interesting comparison. I have two 22 cal. revolvers that I enjoy plinking with, a Colt Frontier Scout with 4.75" barrel and a Heritage Rough Rider with a 6.5" barrel and I usually go with 22LR because I never felt there was enough increase with the 22WMR to be worth the extra cost of ammo. However 22WMR is one of my favorite rifle rounds and will almost always get me over 1800fps though my bolt action rifle's 22" barrel. Some ammo can get you above 2000fps out of a rifle, giving you some serious punch for such a small bullet. To my understanding 22LR and 22WMR put out the same amount of pressure. The difference is in the 22WMR's slow burning powder pushing the bullet for longer period of time. If there's not enough barrel, you lose a lot of that power.

The claim of .22 Magnum duplicating performance of .22 LR in a rifle is entirely accurate. It can easily exceed it substantially. I've chronographed some .22 Magnum loads from the 3 1/2" barrels of my High Standard Derringer at 1,300 to 1,400 fps, and at 1,500 to 1,600 fps from the 6" barrel of an old AMT Automag II. It really suffers in a revolver though. Some cartridges lose velocity very badly from the cylinder/barrel gap of a revolver, and .22 Magnum is one of them. Many .22 revolvers have very large forcing cones too for some reason, and there's a lot of gas blow-by. Some cartridges are essentially unaffected by cylinder/barrel gap. 9mm has practically zero velocity loss in revolvers. I've noticed that short case cartridges consistently lose very little, if any, velocity from the gap and also gain very little after the first 2" to 3" of barrel. Many .22 LR loads I've chronographed gain well under 50 fps between 2" and 6" of barre in revolvers l. Which is surprising. But typical.
I got chronograph readings telling me .22 magnum from a pistol is about the same velocity and energy at the mussel compared to .22LR rifles with 16+" barrels. Bullet construction matters
Answered a few of my questions
Dunno about all this, but I know that in a rifle, .22 magnum is one of those rounds where it's far, far more effective than it really should be, and I've yet to be able to determine why that is, it just rocks. I have a savage Bmag chambered in .22 magnum, and if I'm doing my part, it'll print groups where the holes overlap.
I use a Smith & Wesson 648, 6-inch barrel 22WMR revolver, shoots great!
You can beat .22wmr pistol power considerably with the .22lr rifle by using CCI Velocitor, Aguila Interceptor, CCI Stinger, Aguila Super Extra, and others (I did see this briefly mentioned at the end as well). I would recommend the first two 40gr options from a rifle, as the latter 2 will penetrate very shallow.
Gel performance with either cartridge will vary wildly depending on bullet selection however, regardless of energy levels. But you can defenitely smoke .22wmr pistol energy with a .22lr rifle with the right ammo selection- unless perhaps you are using a 6-8" barrel .22wmr pistol...
bought all those lol. First time i've found Velocitor in a long time, couple boxes of them, couple of the Stinger and Interceptor. I plan to do some of these in pistols, but I do plan at least one test with CCI Maximag 40 gr JHP in the revolver vs the rifle with the Velocitor. I fully expect the Velocitor to be the better performing round.
Nice job...a .22 lr is good to train people on or make a pre teen effective if called upon or getting critters to eat. Now I will say I'm very interested in getting the NEW North American arms Sentinel .22 mag as a Backup when only carrying my Backup 😅

It's an okay revolver. I had better hopes for it though. Trigger pull is terrible and dialing in the sights is not easy with it. I am not saying it's a bad revolver, but it's a lot of money for not a lot of gun.
What? I've had 5 LCR's, currently own 2. All 2 inch, but all had fine triggers. Better than Sp101's and S&W J's.

MY takeaway here??? Say you are camping or hiking, and you'd like the "protection and power" a .22 rifle would provide.. 22WMR in a much smaller handgun will give it to you, in a much more practical size package.

Great data results! I just bought the Rossi RS22M (.22 Mag) and have seen conflicting information about barrel length with the .22 mag in the auto loading rifle. From your experience and professional opinion, what barrel length in the auto loading rifle would you say is ideal? Stock length has the barrel at 22 inches, but I've seen folks trim it down to 16 or 18 inches and claim there is no loss of speed/energy with the reduced length. Again, thanks for putting up great .22 Mag content!
I honestly do not know. I know that shotguns and .22 LR's tend to max out about as much as they can at 14" to 18" of barrel and any more is just drag, and I do know a .22 WMR is a low pressure low power cartridge, so common sense tells me the ideal barrel length is about 14" to 18". That being said, often times there's more to how fast a bullet can go than just barrel length. Bore size, twist rate, rifling types and other factors can effect the velocity.

And a 22 mag in a handgun, adds 100 yards to a 22lr; the magnum is at 100 yards what a 22lr is at the muzzle from equal barrel length.
If I was stuck with just my 10/22 for defense, I'd keep it loaded with CCI 40 grain Velociter. I'm thinking of having the barrel cut to 16" for better maneuverability.
Unless you "know a guy", you coul buy a decent aftermarket 16" bbl for about the same cost as having your current one cut and recrowned.

The Walther WMP velocity, with heavier .22 Mag ammo like Critical Defense and a few others, is near identical to this 3" LCR. With the lighter stuff like 30 gr and some 40 gr, the WMP is a tad faster than this revolver, more than likely due to cylinder gap. I think the heavier bullet loads don't suffer from much cylinder gap loss but the light ones do.
The east coast Mob's most prolific hit-man's preferred caliber was .22 Mag. out of a rifle.
Close, but inaccurate. We always preferred a .22 Magnum in a semiautomatic pistol, rifles are too bulky and difficult to conceal. Of the 17 Contract Murders that I, personally have participated in, literally NONE of them were utilizing a rifle, none at all..

Interesting, especially the behavior of the 22 mag. If we were a big money ammo company and repeated that test 100 times, I wonder what we would see. A long time ago, a friend asked about using her 3” Charter Arms 22 mag on an indoor range designed for 22 LR target rifles. I got some 22LR high speed, a rifle, and the 22 WMR revolver, and shot them over my very early chronograph (optical sky screens were an option that cost more than the chrono, but meant you didn’t use two printed circuit screens with every shot). Similar bullet weight, similar velocity. Yeah, I know 22 LR (except for a special aircrew survival kit run in WWII to ensure Geneva/Hague convention compliance) is not jacketed and 22 WMR is. I figured the range wouldn’t suffer.
