@@lotharhex Yeah, I was going to mention in my own comment that, while it's cool and good to see Moxxie step up emotionally and verbally to his dad, we haven't had a lot of moments of Moxxie being badass yet. Seems like he's always getting bailed out. Granted, maybe he's not one for up close physical fights, maybe that is more in line with Blitzo/Millie/Loona's proficiencies, fine, but if he's the gun expert, I hope they lean into that eventually. Next time Crim (Or maybe another reoccurring antagonist, Striker round 2 would be good for this.) comes back, let he and Moxxie get into a duel at 20 paces or a shootout or something.

You know, I'm honestly starting to wonder if the reason Millie never gets character moments is not because she's a side character, but because unlike every other character the helluva writers are comfortable writing, she is a stable person with a semi-healthy background. Every other character we've seen the helluva boss writers really dive into has severe trauma and deep seated issues. What if they simply don't know HOW to write character development and motivations for characters who are more or less healthy and stable?
Millie more than deserves backstory and motivations for us to understand her better, but I'm starting to feel that the writers don't know how to approach that for her. It seems they wanted at least one main character who isn't a train wreck in the main posse, but in doing so perhaps they've pushed themselves outside of their comfort zone?

    • @SS_Atlantic_Greyhound1119
      @SS_Atlantic_Greyhound1119 ปีที่แล้ว +234

That could very well be the issue here. The writers have managed to write pretty tragic or seemingly tragic backgrounds for everyone while Millie remains as the odd one out. And maybe they just aren't sure how to pull it off considering what they've done before, it would be quite the switch from what they usually do. If they did, however, the question is how would a Millie centric episode pan out? Maybe it can be based on her past before she met Chaz or after, why she left Imp and when she first met Moxxie. In fact this could be an opportunity here to pull offa twist, have the episode start with Moxxie only to reveal more of Millie's background and just why she loves killing. Being a country Imp and being from Wrath, we learn she used to enjoy life but slowly grew tired and wanted more, and the thrill of being an assassin appealed to her more then anything. She tried free lancing but it was hardly a solid gig, so she opted to find work somewhere that could hire her. We could learn about her background as to why she fell in love with Chaz or if she had a partner before who broke her heart and so she struggled to find any love again until meeting Moxxie. Here we could see her be the one to make the first step and learn as to why she fell in love with Moxxie, and that being his kind heart. The episode could end off with Moxxie proposing in some hilarious scene set in a restaurant where we see them fight side by side and just how much a good team they are together. It ends with her accepting whilst she is stained with blood and they kiss, before we come back to the present and see her watching Moxxie when either he is sleeping or she I looking at a photo of their wedding and she smiles to herself. "Instead of a Imp, I was given love from an Angel." Could be a phrase used.

    • @lif6737
      @lif6737 ปีที่แล้ว +63

I think her backstory will inevitably involve Moxxie in some way, but I don’t think that’s an insult to her character or a bad thing in general, so long as it’s handled well. Moxxie’s back story showed us how he met Blitzø, but people obviously don’t accuse it of being too Blitzø centric. Surely Millie and Moxxie will meet in her backstory. My assumption is a lot of her conflict will revolve around feeling restless in life, after all a lot of her dialogue and her origin demonstrates she comes from a very different life than she lives now. Perhaps Moxxie was what allowed her finally settle into something stable. That doesn’t have to come with deep trauma or anything. Instead it’s a journey to find fulfillment, and she finds that in the work she does and the relationship she has. Tbh, that’s a pretty common life story for peoplr, it’s not at all insulting to find value and joy in simple things like that.

It seems that each episode so far has covered in some way how each character met Blitzo. Stolas first seeing him at the circus, Loona being adopted by him, and now Moxxie sharing a cell with him. If the pattern continues, then Millie should at least get a flashback to how she met him in the next episode. I could be wrong, but that's how it looks to me

The only thing I can think of is maybe there comes a situation where she becomes the damsel in distress and Moxxie has to save her for once? Or even like... she tries to do something alone and can't quite handle it, but tries to push through specifically because it's "my problem, Mox, I didn't want to get you involved." And then by Moxxie coming to help her anyway she realizes she babies Moxxie a bit too much, and that she's become too much of a protector to him rather than equal partners? Maybe there's an argument about how she subconsciously thinks he's incapable of things? Idk.
It's like Toph from ATLA, where there's very little character development because the character doesn't necessarily NEED it. And imo there's nothing wrong with having a character like that, not everyone HAS to go through a world-altering arc to become completely changed, but at the same time I can understand why the gimmick of "Moxxie gets in trouble, Millie goes feral and saves him" is getting old. Because I also was really, REALLY hoping Moxxie would follow through on his incredibly well-done threat towards his father...

Then again this is hell so I doubt anyone cares.
Maybe instead Millie’s intense outbursts are a way of counterbalancing her otherwise cheerful nature?
Again, all I have to work on is her anger, which again isn’t a problem. Luna went on a rampage in the previous episode tearing stuff up and all M&M did was watch while calmly drinking coffee/tea.

If everyone else gets to have a buildup to what makes them present, Millie should too, especially when she’s the only one who hasn’t been shown how she met Blitzo yet. she doesn’t need to be complicated, but she should have something. given that she’s angry as hell, they could be building off of that instead of making her this hotheaded bomb whenever Moxxie is in danger. she’s an absolute sweetheart of a woman, but she deserves better writing and just more stuff for her fans to like about her.
it’s easy to say millie doesn’t need anything, but she does. it’s just poor writing to have her exist as a borderline side character doing the same stuff when she’s supposed to be part of the main characters. it just wrings her out and it’ll only be a matter of time before it REALLY starts bothering people, as she’s now seen as a violent mary sue wife type. millie needs some sort of build like everyone else, because it’s realistic and easier to write her with it, considering they’re in hell so no one obviously has it easy. she deserves it

This episode actually highlighted very well what the downside is of refusing to give Millie's character anything but the badass feral wife treatment.
This episode centered around the horrible abuse her husband suffered from since childhood from his abusive parent and how far Moxxie has come since then to cut himself free from that and finding a loving wife and a life that makes him happy.
The concept (and most of the execution) of this episode where Moxxie's abuser forces him back into the family and his wrath is amazing and by itself, I do not at all mind the fact that Crimson stopped his son's moments of standing up for himself and that Moxxie needed to be saved from him. Highly abusive parents are not a story trope to overcome just to look cool, a victim needing help to escape the person who has hurt them and had their toxic hands in the child's brain ever since birth IS NOT degrading for the abuse victim. It rather shows how horrible the parent is that an outside force is needed to save the kid/person the parent was supposed to love and protect.
BUT. This is where Millie's underdeveloped character causes damage and ironically is turned into the very factor that not only undermines the child abuse and the victims her own husband represents, unfortunately now the loving partner's portrayal is used to deliberately sideline and even RIDICULE the victim. Any loving partner who is the Millie to their abused Moxxie should NOT want a portrayal like this in this kind of context and conflict. Especially if it is once again executed in a way you couldn't get away with if the genders where switched :/
Since Millie is such an underdeveloped character the show doubled down on keeping her portrayal the same way as always in the "save Moxxie from the wedding scene" and this included that everyone - INCLUDING MOXXIE - was not allowed to to do anything cool because it could take away from how badass she is in battle bc these are one of the few moments she gets dedicated to HER. The problem with that is that _Jesus fucking CHRIST, _*_someone else's abuse is not a stage for you TO LOOK COOL!_*
But that's what happened. In concept, it's not bad that Moxxie needed to be saved from his abuser. Abusers are the worst and most dangerous things in their victims lives. But simply by the nature of Millie's writing we all know exactly that the reason for why Moxxie was taken out wasn't to primarily to highlight the nature of dangerous abusers, it happened to give Millie a free stage to look cool and play the hero. It's clear as day taht the fighting happened for MILLIE'S sake and not for the abuse victim in his abusers wrath.
If it had the fight wouldn't have swept Moxxie under the rug and had Crimson act as a threat to his son's life. Moxxie was fully at his mercy, this could have been a great moment of the awful abuser vs loving protector of the victim coming face to face where the parent gives up the victim at their mercy because they realize they can't get away with their abuse now the way they did earlier because the victim has since then found a strong and supportive love which can now save them.
Buuuuuuut we couldn't give that moment the proper credit in emotional impact because Millie's is a comedic character while also being yet another "strong" female character where fighting skills and gender-subversion equals personality to a solid degree. So instead of the impactful moment all (male) abuse victims and their loving (female) partners deserve where the victim gets saved in dignity and agency, Millie is made to leave Moxxie tied up, throw him over her shoulder and slap his ass while saying to his abuser "This ass is mine!"
I don't care how funny you think this was (it REALLY isn't. *Please* let male abuse victims have dignity and don't make them the butt of the joke for their female partner "empowerment". For fucks sake leave abuse victims out of that! Especially if you already refuse to let the female partner be her own damn character besides being his wife!), after how well the rest of tbe episode did with Moxxie's and Crimson's dynamic that moment was awful to watch imo. Abusers humiliate, don't write the loving partners doing the same right in front of the abusers eyes!!!

YES THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS INTO WORDS
It was so weird to me that the whole episode was focused around Moxxie's relationship with his family, and the difficulty in communicating with Millie without putting her in danger, and all sorts of actual problems (that were honestly kinda relatable)
And then he can't actually do anything in the whole ending? It's just a montage of Millie killing a bunch of people without even looking at her husband once (especially weird when, like, part of why their relationship was so successful after Moxxie's abusive upbringing was respect and support). I actually appreciated Blitzo's actions this episode because at least he was interesting without overshadowing the plot, but everything serious got thrown out the window just for a 'Millie being a badass' compilation
And yeah, the "this ass is mine" bit was so fucking uncomfortable for me. Like the whole thing was about how Moxxie's father doesn't respect him and abuses him (not to mention Chaz and all the sexual harassment), then Millie just pulls THAT!?!? Like where is the respect? Can we not let him maintain some basic dignity? Getting stuffed into a wedding dress and nearly forced to marry his shitty ex, then getting his ass slapped and carried off like he's not even a person!?!?!?!? WTF

I feel like its even made worse, by their choice to put Moxxie in a dress, making him a literal damsel in distress, as well as the choice in music. They play some punk girl empowerment song while Millie is slaughtering everyone. They fully knew what they were doing. It was simply an excuse to show off how bad ass Millie is. They basically wanted to reverse the gender stereotype of the man saving the girl, and have a total girl boss moment. Which I find conflicting, because on the one hand, it was a cool scene and I like Millie kicking ass. But here it just felt forced, and it overshadows the actual plot, about Moxxies trauma.
Also I dont get why Crimson didnt just shout out, "Yo lady, stop right now or I will slit his throat." Like, that would have stopped her in her tracks.

I always thought that since Millie had the most healthy relationships with her family and past (especially compared to every other character lmao) she’d could’ve been somewhat of a crutch character for them.
When another character has something they need to get off their chest, they’d go to her first for advice or comfort. If that was her character, we could’ve gotten an episode where she feels pressured to help everyone with their insecurities and how it’s weighing down her own mental health. Or how she’s constantly supporting others, but doesn’t want to ask others for support thinking that it could cause them more problems.
Maybe these problems would stem so deep she doesn’t even tell Moxie because Millie herself doesn’t recognize them as problems since she’s so used to her supporting role.

After one of the reveals being Chaz being both their Exes, I was downright surprised they didn't even touch Millie's past with him.
Then it sort of dawned on me that maybe Millie is just the power fantasy trope. After even Stolas, aka Blitzo's affair is given backstory to a point where you'd mistaken him for a main character, I think Millie just preserving this mystery has value to it. Like, it's not a mistake at this point, just ride it the full nine yards - Millie is Star Platinum, the Megazord, this font of glorious violence that shows up and does the things and everything deeper about them is implied. I'd actually be on board with it if she was a pure power fantasy, but her other defining trait being Moxxie's plus 1 is what I think is the entire problem with her, since it's a trodden objectification trope.

The writer admitted on Twitter in response to this issue that he even had her flashback with Chaz prepped and ready, only to find it out of place and as you said earlier, would stick out like a sore thumb when put together with Moxxie’s distress. That and the episode itself is already too long.

He just gets tasered, placed in a wedding dress and saved by Millie. And yet, even with the whole massacre Millie did as was said Millie didn't get a lot in the episode regardless, so to me it felt like a slot where Moxxie could've fought back against his dad even if he lost *anyway* was still taken by how Millie came in for the rescue.

We see how he's good at manipulating people (He convinced Crimson he was rich despite all the evidence in his car) but he's also an idiot. Moxxie related their backstory as a bunch of movie references, so I think that is how they got together: Chaz hooked into Moxxie's theater/movie obsession. Meanwhile later he tried to seduce Moxxie with a song, saying he "remembers" how much Moxxie liked them, but in this instance I think he confused Millie for Moxxie, since she's the one who goes weak in the knees for corny songs, and the seduction didn't seem to work on Moxxie, not even a little bit. Chaz got to Moxxie through movies and to Millie through music.

My biggest problem with this episode, was Mox having this BIG chekhov's gun setting up moment of "if you try and stop me, you'll find out just how good I've gotten at my job." only for that gun to never be fired, because he got knocked out RIGHT after. This isn't the first time that's happened-when he discovered Striker's intentions with the holy weapon, Millie needed to step in there to try and save him. I loved Millie here, but I'm getting tired of her being a one note character.
She should've been the focus in The Harvest Moon Festival, but the focus AGAIN was on Moxxie feeling inadequate. I love that we're exploring who he is, but it just feels like rinse and repeat at this point now. We need to see him FOLLOW THROUGH on a threat for once, otherwise what's the point. It's becoming repetitive. I'm tired of Moxxie having moments where he's on top, only to get the rug pulled underneath. The only time that HASN'T happened was in Truth Seekers, where he opened up to Blitz, and held his own along with the gang.
I saw a comment say "I know people are gonna be upset over him being knocked out, but this is the start of his character development." as an excuse to what happened. But the thing is, he's HAD his development start since mid season 1. By now we should see him be more efficient, more confident, we've seen him open up. But no, they had him be saved again. I think that line is going to come back with having Moxxie fight Crim in their next encounter. I also think that either Moxxie isn't going to kill him (call back to how he called the cops on the rest of the family in season 1 episode 1 instead of just killing them) and Millie or Blitz kill him after moxxie leaves or hes going to kill Crim in such a brutal way that its entirely offscreen with blood and bodyparts flying into view and Millie just watches unsure whether to be disturbed or impressed.
I also think if it happens Crim's death is going to set up a conflict for a third act episode of IMP having to deal with the gap in the mafia families with Moxxie either inheriting the family or having to fight for it to get rid of someone ordering a hit on him or something. which will either end up with IMP also having mafia stuff going on in the background, as well as their usual shennanigans or (maybe a stretch) very loosely having the stuff that happens in hell in the Helluva story have a knock on effect of background events in Hazbin (say for example Crim's mafioso having dealings with the 3 Vs in the pride ring or Mammon pissed that they interfered with business or something)
I liked Millie's role in this episode because they didn't force her to be a damsel in distress or write her out of the combat. she was bad ass and didnt need handicapping. I'd just like to see an episode where she stands out on her own without Moxxie.
So far the show has set up a lot of possible future encounters (Striker, Crim, The Cherubs, D.H.O.R.K.S) but haven't brought them back yet so i'm really looking forward to seeing what happens later. Also wondering if we'll see any of IMPs clients in Hazbin.

    There were 2 main issues with this episode for me;
    1) Despite the plot revolving around Millie & Moxxie’s Ex, as well as Moxxie’s family and upbringing, Millie was barely present, being relegated to only a few generic lines of dialogue and an action scene at the end. This once again leaves Millie in a very minimal position in what should have been a pivotal episode for her, much like we saw in Season 1 Episode 5.
    2) The episode ends with Moxxie’s father becoming yet another villain for later on, despite the fact we’ve had 5 other opposing groups already introduced, none of which had much of a returning role as of yet (Robofizz & Ozzie, Verosika’s Group, The Cherubs, D.O.R.K.S, and Stella & Striker). Millie seems to really care not just for moxie, but for her crew as well. From what I've seen all characters do, go back to some root of trama, or goal they were told they had to achieve. I think that her personality is bold and sweet, expecially when she shows her love for moxie and getting aggressive. More back story of her and her sister. Or the way that she was raised. Going back to her family I thought was cool, bc, you can see she gets her toughness from her parents. Like even maybe how her parents met and what she was born into, might establish more of her story. ❤❤❤

They could have easily put in her backstory with vhaz right after she discovered moxxie's oast with him, so she'd say something like "First you [insert what Chaz did to Millie that made her hate him so much] and now you did THAT to my husband!? I saw another comment kinda explaining this but, we can see that Millie doesn’t want to be away from Moxie. This could be an attachment or abandonment issue she has that a Millie centered episode could dive into. She chases after and saves moxie a lot and was pissed when she learned Chaz left him. An episode diving into her learning/ coping with this would be amazing

YES, this is what I think too, she shows some very subtle abandonment issues, like in the episode truth seekers, when the portal closes separating Moxxie and blitz from Millie and loona, Millie went crazy in that moment, she started crying even, that was not out of place, that scene was on purpose to allude to a possible issue millie has, I think they will deepen into her story in that way, in that episode, that is not how a normal person would react, she reacted as if she’d never see Moxxie again or that she lost him for good and it’s her fault, something along those lines, that scene really made me question what her backstory is, why she’s so good at fighting, why she cannot stand a moment without Moxxie, why she has so many anger issues etc, it’s really mysterious.

This episode was much darker than anything before in this series. I loved Moxxies background story and he threatened to kill his father. That was epic. It looked so cool when Millie used Blitzo's horns to kill one of the sharks. This episode had everything: Drama, horror and comedy. I don't think I have to describe the outstanding animation there especially the smooth turns in the camera angel. Easily one of my favourite episodes. The only complain I have with this episode that Loona doesn't talk once in this episode. It's less than we got from Episode 2. Why doesn't the writers give her at least one sentence at the beginning and the end of the episode? Like when he helicopter broke the wall and when IMP broke the wall again when they came back.

First was his in-laws(just in general wants to be considered part of his new family), second was his relationship with Blitz (this is him trying to understand where they stand in this business compared to how his relationship with his dad was) and finally his dad, which is the result of how much he’s grown, especially when he challenges the new life he has with Millie. This series has a serious issue with its female characters and it's making it hard for me to keep up with it knowing that the only time Millie and Luna get episodes where they're major players, it's always going to be for the development of Moxie (who I like a lot!!) and Blitzo. If the series is going to continue down the path of focusing on interpersonal drama & relationships over the nonsequiter antagonist of the week/hit of the week, then Luna and ESPECIALLY Millie deserve to be fleshed out more as independent characters without the focus shifting immediately to the male characters they have the closest relationship with.

Like here's where the problem for me with this episode lies. Beyond millie just being pushed aside to the position of savage wife again, moxxie is again pushed aside to the position of the emotional person in need of saving. Like they have established that moxxie is very much a character capable of holding his own, at least since truth seeker, yet he has never gotten a single chance to shine in that regard. It really seems like moxxie is just there to be the emotional guy, and millie is just there to be the fighting guy in their relationship, and it's really tiering. Like give each of them a chance to shine in the other regard too. For moxxie for example you could have made him take out one or two of crimsons goons before he got tasered, and for millie, you could have at least explained her backstory with chaz, and just give her a character beyond brawler. Maybe have them talk before being separated. Have her know the backstory of moxxie, and be sceptical of crimson from the start. Just make her more, then moxxie's liveguard, because that's how she currently feels to me. And for goodness sake, make moxxie get shit done as well, like this character deserves better, then to constantly be the one who needs saving. Show us the skills he has acquired due to his job, don't just tell us about them. I absolutely loved this episode, but this shit just held it back from perfection.

    • @WolfBerserker13
      @WolfBerserker13 ปีที่แล้ว +36

This is pretty accurate to how I feel about the episode. It's not just millie who's not getting the best treatment, moxxie is too. Him standing up to his father without needing his wife's spine was a huge moment. Having him immediately dropped before being able to act on that turned a serious moment into a punch line. Fine, catharsis is delayed. But at the final conflict, he never got another word or action. Just carted off in a dress, and used for one more gag.
All this needed was Blitz freeing up moxxie while millie got her rampage so he could make good on that last conflict. Maybe not killing his father, but wounding him and coming to terms with their new power dynamic. Crimson's son is no longer a pawn but a true member of the family. Denying moxxie and millie is not an option for him. Mox owes his wife a proper introduction to his family, mob or not.

The only thing I kinda can use as defense for Vivizie here is that Mox is strongly implied to be a snipper type of fighter and also... well, he looked unarmed there.
(of course, he could have had a small gun to use for self-defense purpose, but I think there are a few steps between Moxxie standing up to his Father and attempting to kill this piece of shit)
But for the end part, yeah, Blizt coming, freeing Moxxie (most likely having to fight Crimson a bit as a result) and Moxxie once free going to pick up a gun, maybe to shoot a guy that was trying to sneak up on Millie would have been nice. (it would show they have each other back too)
And Millie can still decide to lift him over her shoulder like she did while talking to Crimson.

Okay okay but here's an idea for her character..
Since from what we've seen, it seems millie has had a simple life with her family on the farm and has a healthy relationship with each member. Tho this is good, it makes her feel like it's hard to connect to her husband and friends (Blitzø, loona)
This also makes her feel like she has to be tough, and a designated protecter of her husband to make up for that lack of connection and understanding.
All this tied together makes her feel like any personal struggle of hers is minor and not important since she has had a good life, and that she must always be the tough one. This cuases her stress aswell.
So an episode tackling this issue could really build on her imo!

It would be interesting to know why/how she hooked up with him to begin with, seeing how much she despises him now and isn’t even the slightest bit charmed or conflicted about his advances.
Maybe she used to be more vulnerable physically and emotionally? And maybe that’s part of how she’s learned to be so strong, to not be taken advantage of or fall for the wrong things?
I do love that despite how much of a badass she is, she still has a very girly feminine bubbly side. Maybe Chaz took her to fun places, serenaded her, bought her stuffed animals?
It would be cool that maybe he exploited that softer side of Millie, so she learned to not fall for those things again, but it still not destroying that side of her. Like yeah she learned to not let her femininity get exploited, but she didn’t let it change her personality you know?

I don't actively think Millie is the most shallow character due to not having a direct background being touched upon. (She kinda does when they visit her familly???)
I feel what this means is that, well, Millie is healthy. She doesn't have deep trauma to exploit and for once I find that a GOOD thing. In a cast of character whom all went through funked up shit, Millie is the strong STABLE person that knows what a normal life is supposed to be like. She's not vain or heartless either from this. Being a very supportive person isn't making one less interesting, it is just her primary traits, which is fine.
In short i think Millie needs more interaction with the world around them, like making a new friend, going out shopping whatever the funk else, that doesn't DIRECTLY involve the other characters or violence scenes, but she doesn't need extra trauma and bad shit that's happened to her. Just an episode where she's having the day off, interacting only with Luna and not about her husband, stuff like that something that's centered around relaxation time away from IMP and her husband.

-How Millie’s family started disliking Moxxie
-What led to her becoming part of I.M.P if M&M met after the fact
I hope some of this stuff gets addressed in the later seasons, Millie’s pretty intriguing and a part of the main squad, she deserves an episode of her own that’s dominated by her instead of Moxxie or better yet one that’s independently focused on her.

“whatever the hell chazz had going on” is a very accurate description of whatever the hell chazz had going on

Honestly I love this show so much. Yes it has mistakes, but yall gotta understand this is made by a couple people with a dream. It's Honestly incredible and inspires me to keep animating

Chaz last as long as he need to. I love Crim's slow turn and stare.

I'd love to see why Millie became so strong and good at fighting. Sure, we know she was raised like that by her parents on the Harvest Moon episode, but I'd love to see more reasons for that more than "Yeah, we raised our kids to be total badasses"
I'd love to see that maybe at some point Millie was completely helpless on a situation, really vulnerable but no one was there to save her. Once she got out of that situation she trained so hard to become unstoppable.
