Martin Magnifico M265 - Polygut Classical Guitar Strings - Review & Sound Test

- The Martin Magnifico strings are made in collaboration between Aquila in Italy and C.F. Martin in the USA. They have synthetic “polygut” trebles which are intended to imitate the tonality of gut strings. They have a grittier texture to them, which is meant to mimic the grip of gut, but while this polygut material is closer in tactile feel to gut, it does not offer the same comfort level, being closer to carbon in feel. Similarly to carbon, they have a higher tension and do require more strength in both the left and right hand than traditional nylon or gut. With that in mind, I wouldn’t recommend these strings for vintage or Romantic Era guitars; while the traditional treble tone is there, the tension could be harmful over time. Perhaps the best point is their bright tone and precise intonation, which does seem to be accurate at the 12th fret. The “throaty” basses are bright and lyrical, but are not similar to the basses in “Gut & Silk” sets produced by Aquila that have a warmer, round sound. Take a listen for yourself and see what you think. My set was purchased at the Martin Factory in Nazareth, PA.

Very interesting string report. Aquila always was a great producer, the only ones who prepare a set of real gut and silk strings which is affordable... a beautiful line her now and a really great work of Martin !!
Thanks, Daniel! Glad to hear the review was helpful, you'd likely enjoy these strings too.
Hello Josh,
What a beautiful sharing. It's magnificent!
A pleasant listening moment for me. All my congratulations and my like. Good day. Danielle
Thanks, Danielle! I appreciate your kind words!
A great in-depth review of the Martin Magnifico strings!
Thanks, Mette! I appreciate the support!
Excellent information and historical detail. And good assumptions on image or product and renaissance which has the idea of sophistication and advancements or innovations
Thanks, Todd! That's great to hear that you felt my product info was accurate. I'd be interested in hearing your own take on these strings someday too.
Very interesting. I use Aquila on my Guitalele. Also so well played. 👏🎸🎶
Thanks, Wolfgang! Yes, Aquila seem to be even more well known for their Guitalele and Ukulele strings; good choice!
Nice review Josh! I have a lot of experience with these strings. I have used them for several years with several different guitars. They are a little bit different if you aren't use to them. All in all they have a good purpose if you want a much louder brighter string.
Good playing examples.
Thanks, Justin! Yes, I remember you had them on the Martin nylon guitar! I'm still a bit on the fence about how much I liked these or not. The tone was great, but I wasn't a huge fan of the texture on the trebles. I've saved them for later use, or I may make a hybrid set sometime.
Really excellent review and playing Josh Very beautiful pieces Indeed bright tones on the trebles Thank you for sharing 🎸
Thanks, John! These strings would work well with your style of playing, since I find you tend to have a brighter sound.
A very good review Josh! As always I appreciate that you play a few different examples to really showcase the strings 👍
Thanks, Wyatt! Glad to hear it; I started showcasing styles that I like to play because so many other reviews were demoing some esoteric selections. This way, people of all skill levels can hear how they'll potentially sound on the repertoire they play.
I always enjoy the product reviews of you! thanks for a ll the interesting informations and the work putting togehter the video. great playing examples at the end. I like the clear sound of this string set!
Thanks, Wolf! Great feedback, glad to hear that the info was useful and easy to follow. More reviews to come soon!
Sounding good 🎻

Very nice music
Thanks, Dad! I appreciate it!
Interesting, I may try them soon
Thanks, Juan! I'd be interested in your thoughts if you do try them. I feel like this is an underrated set for sure.
Excellent review of these stings Josh! I am very tempted to buy a set of these 🎵
Thanks, Gary! These would work well for your style of playing, since they're brighter and would work well for strumming style music (similar to a brighter steel string tone).
Thx so much Josh for this videos!
Thanks, Matteo! I appreciate it!
You always have interesting stories in which to wrap up your reviews! 👍
I like the sound, good sustain and timbre. 😎
Thanks, Tomas! "Timbre" is a great term, I should address that in future reviews. If you can't find them in Sweden drop me a line and I'll see if I can get you a pack from the US. More string reviews to come soon (once I edit them, ha ha)!

Thanks! I appreciate it!
Great review. I have been using DAddario normal nylon strings for ever. I think I need a change. I'm actually having some difficulty with my tone and intonation. Never considered different strings!
Thanks, Morris! I've heard from a few others that D'Addario has had some quality control issues lately. Justin (in this thread) had a defective D'Addario B string a few months ago. Hope they get back up to par soon. Meanwhile, it's good to try out different materials to see if you like them, I agree. While the tone is brighter, the playing feel will be different. I will say that the intonation on this set was quite accurate, so that could be the fix you're looking for.
Thank you Josh. That is good information. I had a feeling something was up with the strings I put on and it was the B string I was having problems with.
Odd that they went for an older, gut-like soundworld, but with very thin strings. I'd love to know the level of input Aquila had!
Thanks, Steven! When you mentioned "textured strings" in your no nail vlog, I immediately had these in mind. They would work well for no nail playing, but are definitely a denser material than genuine gut. For $10 vs $30, though, it would be a good tradeoff for those on a budget. Great question about the input; there wasn't much info on their website about it. I do know that the collaboration was about the string material itself, because the same "polygut" is used on Martin ukulele strings. I'd venture that Aquila designed the string and licensed the formula to Martin, since it's made in their Mexican string factory.
There are additional cues of provenance shown on the back of the individual string envelopes: the basses are made in Martin’s Mexican string facility. The trebles are actually made by Aquila in Italy. Since the listed gauges are essentially the same as the Rubino trebles, I’m wondering if they are just gray-colored Rubinos. That the would certainly explain their proclivity for breaking during initial tuneup.
