    Dear Josh, I have long neglected the really important things in life like your videos. I am quite overwhelmed what progress you have made. Also your mustache is gone now. I always enjoy your way of making the internet more beautiful. I am very enthusiastic. Thank you for your authenticity. Bravissimo!!!!

      Thanks, Justin! I try to show the different styles so that people can hear how the strings may sound for their own playing. I'm also glad I waited to record with the new high e string.

    I appreciate your reviews. I’ve had a good time playing with gut strings by gamut music in Minnesota us. I also spoke with their service dept and he said with full confidence I could tune to 440. I mostly tune to 415. Again thanks for the videos!

      Thanks for the feedback! I've heard of Gamut too, I should try them next and see how that goes! It's just so easy to add these Pyramid to the cart when I'm already making a Strings By Mail order (ha ha).

      Thanks, Steven! Yes, these were all from memory. I haven't had much time to learn new material lately, so a string review fit the bill nicely. Hint: I wear my glasses in the videos I sight-read, because otherwise I can't see (ha ha).

      @@Josh.Vanjani Hard to tell honestly; to make a true comparison I would probably need to try them on the same guitar that I had when I tried the Aquila guitar strings; but this guitar is now for sale in a guitar salon!

      @@baroquelute Very true. I was only asking based on the sound from the speakers, hopefully the quality was good enough to make a passing judgement. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing gut strings on your lute too. Cheers!

    Very interesting video, thank you. I'm looking for strings for my 19th century German guitar lute, and want it to sound more lute-like than it sounds with steel strings. Can you suggest which nylon strings sound closest to gut strings? Would that be high-tension nylon or medium tension? (Gut strings are outside my budget.) Thank you.

    • @Josh.Vanjani
      @Josh.Vanjani  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Al! I'd recommend the Aquila Alabastro, they're a nylon string designed to be tonally close to gut. They're known as "nylgut" strings and have a similar brightness and have more texture on them than plain nylon. I have a review on those too, either search it up or you can check out my "String Review" playlist. As for tension, I haven't noticed a tonal difference between high and low in the same line, but mostly a difference in playing comfort, projection and sustain. For example, the Aquila "Superior" tension is louder, requires a heavier touch and has less sustain than the normal set.

    Hey Josh I would love to be able to play as well as you do. Can the gut strings be tuned to 440hz?

    • @Josh.Vanjani
      @Josh.Vanjani  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, Benjamin! So according to the manufacturer, it's recommended to tune no higher than 435Hz. That's fairly close to 440Hz and most people can't tell the difference. In my recent Aguado Exercise No. 19 video, I tuned to 435Hz. That being said, you could try to push them up to 440Hz, but you run the risk of the strings snapping or breaking prematurely. Like I mentioned in the video, the best option is to tune a half step down (415Hz) and use a capo if you absolutely must perform something in Standard Pitch. I had to do this when playing Giuliani duets with my friend Justin. If anyone has an issue with your using a capo, find someone else to play with who appreciates period music, ha ha.

    How long does a set last?

    • @Josh.Vanjani
      @Josh.Vanjani  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A set will usually last me about six months in the winter and three months in the summer. The gut will usually last longer than the silk basses. Occasionally, you'll get a defective gut string or one that doesn't last as long as the others, usually the high e, but I've had it happen on a B too. You can almost always tell if a string is "off" because there will either be a variation in color or texture. These strings are very susceptible to changes in weather, so I'd recommend keeping the guitar in a properly humidified case when not in use. I got lazy one night last month and left the Ramirez on the stand and woke up to the silk D string breaking in the middle of the night (sounded like something out of a horror movie, especially in the dark). While this set does require more maintenance than nylon, the organic sound quality and depth of feeling you can get out of your music makes it worthwhile. Hope this helps!
