To label your bucket I would tape a clear page protector around the outside so that you can slip the labels in and out in case whatever you want to put in your buckets changes over time. It also will keep the paper label from getting torn and dirty
also, keep the open end to the side. no dust etc falling in
My only suggestion to this wonderful idea is to turn the page cover so the opening turned towards one side or the other & not turned upwards.
That will help prevent flour/sugar/etc from falling into the page cover.
It's a pain to clean them out.

Becky you should hang a clip board with a have list and a need list. This would make ordering easier. You could also label the shelf’s front & back, so you know what is in the buckets. You could use your older shelves for extra household items. This system is going to be a game changer. You will be able to see what you have. Awesome. I am 72 yrs old and since my 12 yr old great grandson taught me how to watch u tube on my T V l have watched your videos and love them all. Looks great! Quick suggestion, use bungee cords across the shelves so if you push your jars they don't fall off the shelf.
I have these shelves and I love them. One recommendation I have for you is to put shelf liner on them. If you have a jar that breaks, the mess is hard to clean because it will soak into the wood product the shelf is made of.
Are yours sagging from the weight? Mine are from my can goods.
I like the no bugs malady for easy clean.
@@Ristina81 I had heard that they might do that. Old Alabama Gardener advised using a thicker 3/4 inch plywood board to replace the thin press board shelf . I got a great deal on boards already cut to the right size at Menards.😊
I have metal shelving units similar to those except the shelves aren't the same as these, they're metal wired shelves. Had them for years and still holding strong. Got them at Home Depot. Plan to get more if I end up buying a home and some land.
@@Ristina81 mine are not sagging- I’ve had them for more than ten years. The only damage is the shelf that I had the jar break on. It’s just stained from the food product. It’s covered with shelf paper- the kind that is a little thicker with the grip on the bottom. I bought it at Walmart.

Looks great Becky! Before you get too far along with setting up your pantry, a few suggestions. Those particle board shelves tend to sag under the weight of heavy jars & cans and humidity can speed this process along. You might want to consider running a dehumidifier in your basement to help prevent this. Also, once you’re finished with all of your other remodeling projects, you might want to consider replacing the particle board shelves with dimensional lumber cut to fit like 2”x8” boards or whatever measurements work to fit the depth of your shelving to provide a much more stable surface. Did you know that if you flip the black braces that hold the shelving upside down, this will sink the shelf surface giving you a lip on each shelf that will prevent your beautiful home canned items from getting knocked off the shelves? Keep up the good work! Can’t wait to see the full pantry tour😀

I have the 18" version of these shelves, I have doubled some of the shelves, and have protected with moisture by putting 2 18" peel and stick tiles on top. Could easily use the 24" if you can find them, or 6 12".
We've had several of these shelves collapse as well, storing things not as heavy as my canned goods.
Becky, all of this! At the very least, put a reminder in your phone to take the time to flip the particle board every 3 months to try to even out the wear. I just replaced these exact style of shelves in my work storage with the same ones but with the lexan-like shelves and they seem much sturdier and like they won't have the same wear just from the humidity and holding heavy things.
Also, try to make sure they are always evenly loaded. Never leave one for long with something only in the center, or only at one end or the other. Evenly distribute the weight at all times!
The way I did my shelves was I turned the shelves so the narrow side was facing the wall. I made "grocery rows" in my storage. I can access both sides of the shelves. Great job! Such a big project!

You can use a series of 3 bungee cords on the back side of each shelf. Three on each shelf will give a nice tall “wall”. You can attach them in the unused holes on the metal shelf supports. This will create a really nice wall that can easily be pulled down to stock additional jars from behind.
Also a great idea for those of us living in earthquake country.
I was actually thinking the same, especially when she was putting the pasta on the shelves. Something along the back of the shelves would be helpful in case "someone" gets enthusiastic about pushing jars around.
When we moved into our forever home, I put cord across the front of each pantry shelf in my kitchen, even though I thought it'd be a pain in the neck with the putting ins and taking outs. Got used to it really fast! Never lost a thing, in 32 years in California.

You should make a sun map so you can figure out where to put your garden. That’s how I did mine, it worked out great

ALTERNATIVELY, you can place the narrow side of the shelves against the wall, and leave 26" between the shelves. That way, you would have the wall helping stabilize the shelf units.

You can cut wood to fit those wire shelves. Don’t get rid of them even if you don’t use them for can goods. They are always so helpful

I think if you turn the shelves on the other end so they’re short end against the wall you’ll be able to go around them still and use one isle (the spacing between them) to go in between them. That way you can also secure them to the wall. Then if necessary, you’ll be able to fit more of them.
Becky, I certainly feel for you today. I moved to my current home in January 2021 from a home about 350 miles away. Moving the pantry with my home canned food was quite a challenge. Most things were on the moving truck, but I couldn't trust my canning most of my gardening supplies to the commercial movers, and of course, they couldn't move my chickens, so I rented a 15 ft U-haul truck and towed my car. Making that 5 1/2 hour drive with two miniature poodles and 5 chickens was interesting, to say the least!
How did you keep the jarred food safe with your drive? We’re moving 14 hours South and I have almost 1,000 canned food jars to travel with and it’s making me so anxious! We need to bring our chickens with too! (And dogs and cats)
Lots of work! I have a suggestion, maybe put down some of those workout foam mats that fit together like puzzle pieces around the shelves that way if a jar falls it will be less likely to break.

When I started canning I'd can with my Father in Law. He's great at it. And at the time I had alot to learn. I'm sure this isn't for everyone but when I'd use a jar, wash, clean & dry it he always told me the lid I used for it( washed & dried also) to put the lid on upside down & of course screw the lid on and store them that way so they'd stay clean inside. We'd still wash them of course before using again but I swear by this. It just keeps the jars as clean as possible until we washed them & canned again. Just a Suggestion. 💜💜

I love your videos. I am jealous of the huge basement for storage.
I would strongly suggest you put a dehumidifier in the basement to make sure there isn’t any moisture down there. I have had the same storage shelves and if they get damp they can sag and break.
It would a tragedy to lose all your food and hard work.
I live with someone who does IT and he built me a digital system that has all the recipes, a supply list that things can be added or subtracted as we use them. It also states where the items are located (such as basement, kitchen etc) If we run low on something it automatically adds it to the shopping list. It has been a lifesaver.

Becky, last night i made some pre-made breakfast sandwiches per your recommendation. As a spoonie(hidden disabilities/chronic illness) have non-ramen/can soup meals is not always feasible for me. Making freezer meals when i am able to cook and then freezing them for when I'm not made this past month so much more enjoyable with regards to food. Now i need a pressure canner so i can make some of them into non-frozen, immediately ready meals.
I am so happy for you. Watching all the goodies put on the shelves is so fun to watch. I am sure it brings you joy. As for your noodles, those are hard work that if a rodent gets in you may want to cry. My advice would be finding another way to store them. I live in the country and mice happen....wink wink. She can store them in an empty 5 gallon bucket to protect them.
If you put the packs of noodles into a low square container or bucket and lid... No more rodent worries

If you don’t have a storage plan for your old shelves, they would make really good seed starting shelves! The grates make it easier to hook lights and fans and also allow water through :)

Basements are wonderful! I love the shelves, just a thought. Have you thought about adding a strip of wood or some kid of snow fence type thing across each self front and back to keep jars from falling off in case of an earthquake? I'm from earthquake country, always a consideration.

What a blessing that you have both of your families close by. If I can leave some advice to young families I would say, don't move far from your family. Our families are out-of-state and we miss out on so much. Becky please put on description box the kind of shelves you bought.
I love your new storage area! A tip that I use for moving like six jars at a time is to use wine bags. The stores usually give them away for free when you buy have a case of wine and they have clothe dividers so the jars don’t clank together. I can move 12 quart or pint jars in one bag safety
Or even cardboard wine bottle holders like from Hyvee.
Hi Becky, I really enjoy your videos. The question I have is why do you can and preserve so much food when there are only two of you. We can and preserve food as well, but nowhere near what you do and there are 7 of us.
So happy for you that you've got a wonderful, super useful new basement space! Have you considered seismic restraints for your shelves? I've seen other folks here in the PNW also mount a little rail along the front of shelves for the same reason. Great work, the new pantry looks fantastic!

The muscle racks are great but don’t over load them because they will bow in the middle. I purchased two of them and the wood insert is not supported enough. I am thinking of having my brother make a extra support for the shelves.

I've learned from a seasoned canner that if you have concerns about your jar threads bumping into anything, putting the rings back on very, very loosely can help prevent the jar threads from getting chipped. I take all the rings off and then put clean rings back on things I'm giving away so people will have a way to reseal the jar after opening.
Being able to access the shelves from both sides is a total “GAME CHANGER!” I’m thrilled for you and jealous I can’t do the same. 😉
A suggestion for your current wire shelves. You can buy a plastic liner for the shelves so items don’t sit wonky on the shelves. I use these liners in my pantry that has wire shelves.
Do you know the name of the plastic liner or where to get it?
@@theheartoftexas I bought mine at Amazon. For my smaller shelves I bought it in rolls that I could cut to fit. For the bigger heavy duty shelves you buy them as a sheet. Lookup wire shelf liners and a bunch of items pop up.
I use painter's tape for labeling containers. That way when it is time to change it it's easy to do!
You can always label your 5 gallon pails with painters tape and a sharpie as a temporary solution until your permanent label is ready.

I keep all my empty canning jars in the canning jar boxes. Not only does it keep them safe and organized, but also cleaner too so just a sterilization is needed before using. I stack these boxes on a shelf right next to my canned goods. Also, I keep a box or 2 of lids and rings right there and my canners on top of the shelf. I love this because it keeps it all together. You're pantry's looking good and I'm sure you're having such a good time getting it all organized in a great place!
Some lighting in the rear would be good as it looks pretty dark and it certainly will be when all the shelves stocked. Also, get yourself a metal cart which will really help you bring things indoors from truck or even if just bringing things from upstairs to the storage. Just a thought. I have a heavy duty, trim, foldable hand truck that holds 350 lbs. Can't remember where I bought it but it has been great. You wouldn't believe what you tote around with it.
I have those shelves. Love them. Shelf paper/contact paper them to prevent from things leaking on them. Very sturdy.

I love your videos! Just a suggestion when storing empty canning jars: Make sure they are completely dry, then invert the used (cleaned) canning lid and ring to keep the jars clean so they are ready to go next time you use them for canning. I invert the lid so the rubber ring on the lid doesn't get heated or pressure sealed to the jar potentially leaving rubber compound on jar rim. Helps keep out dust and possibly spiders who venture in and end up dying in the jar. This process also protects the jar rim from potentially getting chipped too.

You should reach out to your local university extension office to take any canning jar boxes off of their hands. When I went through our Master Food Preserver course, we went through cases of canning jars each week during labs and ended up having all the empty boxes to recycle due to each of us taking home the few jars that we canned that day.
I just came to say that I really appreciate you sharing how you take time to decompress. I know that a lot of people do that but the last few videos you have shared with us that you are taking breaks when you need a mental or physical rest. Its validation that I know that a lot of people need right now.
We all need a friend/family member like Lacey. How kind and generous she is with her time and energy!!!
Look at sail boat and yatch shelves - They often have an extra board or rung across openings. These shelves lend themselves to putting a board across the ends or along thier lengths, just inside the frame with holes that line up with the vertical racking bolt holes. Bolt or zip tie them up. Even 1"x2"'s, fence boards, or a host of other boards will work. To keep wood from gathering dust and dirt, seal the grain and pores with a varnish or a paint product capable of being wiped down with a cleaning product.
Of course, you can just bolt up wood straps to the outside ofmyour vertical racking as well.
I second bringing stuff along whenever you can to the new house! We moved about an hour away last year (long story short we moved out of our house two months before we could move into the new one), and we got a storage unit a few blocks away from my husband's new job. So I would spend my day packing boxes, and I would stack them in the garage. Then a few times a week my husband would load up the car, and stop by the storage unit on his way to work. We ended up not having to rent a U-Haul or anything when it came to the final move out day, which was amazing. It was a pain, but we were so glad we did it the way!

Instead of putting the shelves 26” off the wall, you could have turned them perpendicular to the wall and had a rural isles., making it easier to access both sides or the isle. And I’m surprised you didn’t leave the jars in their boxes.

You might be able to contact the company that makes the shelves and order the metal prices that the plywood goes on so you can make another shelf. Maybe even find some one that does metal work if that doesn’t work. You gotta admit the storage in the kitchen of your old home was AWESOME 😁 I’m renovating my kitchen and I think I’m going to do a wall like you have for pantry storage.

Suggestion: keep a pack of sharpies near the basement pantry (or tie to a string and wrap string around the shelf post) Looking good. I love to organize stuff.
Rubbing alcohol takes sharpie off hard surfaces, right? Retired now, but when I was teaching I learned that hand sanitizer - a thick brand - will stick around on a vertical whiteboard long enough to let the alcohol in it do its work while I did something else. Very handy stuff! 🌞
@@eer4465 on white boards, you can also write over sharpie with a dry erase marker to remove the sharpie.
You can hang a clipboard on the end of a shelf to write what you want to order. I have printed a screenshot of an item to put on the container when I didn’t have the bag.
Steel cut oats are my favorite breakfast! I make apple-cinnamon. I found that cooking the apples in with the oats make it sweet enough that I don't need to add any extra sugar.
Woooo girl!!! I did this very thing last fall moving from my Seattle urban homestead to our farm in NW NC!! I had a truck bed full of winter squash and canned goods and cabbages! 🤣 I wasnt letting all that goodness go to waste! We lost almost nothing on the drive from Seattle to NC, worth the logistics nightmare. 😆
I had these same shelves and they are heavy duty. Your idea to put an extra shelf was a great idea. I double and triple stacked store bought canned goods and eventually the middle of the shelves bowed from the weight. Also be careful that your squashes don’t go bad before you notice-if they leak, those shelves are porous and it will soak in.
I love that you got to organize your canned food. One thought: that basement might be dustier and more humid than the room in your old house. Like Mary said, you might add some dehumidifiers to prevent jar lids from rusting and you may want to wipe down jars with a damp cloth before opening to keep food edible!
You are going to have a nice setup in the new place for sure. But a word of warning, in one of the canning groups on facebook someone used similar shelves for canning jars and where the 2 vertical sections connect is a weak point. They had the connection give out and the top sections fall over resulting in many broken jars.
That's a lot of work for 1 day! We moved 2000 miles last fall & I had 58 5 gallon buckets & over 100 heavy duty boxes of things with sooo much bubble wrap! lol Luckly, nothing broke but we did end up needing to use 2 uhaul trucks (luckily, we moved before the gas prices went crazy!). I had those shelves & I'd recommend welding or affixing some sort of center support because they will bow over time without it. When will you be in the new house?
For my used jars I pick up blueberry boxes from the grocery store. They are heavy duty enough to handle the jars and the jar fit very nicely in them.

you can use the shelf wood under the basket with flour to build the last shelf because you don't need nothing under the bucket

we used these in our new garage and got the extra to make more shelves. the issue we have found with these. is if there is a lot of weight in the center of the shelf. the board bows and will pop off the ridge. So keep an eye on that.

I cannot think of anything better than coming down your stairs to the basement and seeing all that food. It is like seeing shelves of jewels. The colors are gorgeous and all your hard work is on display. Great job honey!
Once you get organized the shelving units label them for easy reference (front and back). I think you are doing the right thing by starting to bring things into the new home it will help in the end with the final move. You may also want to pack some of the other items not being used like fall/winter clothing, knickknacks, pictures and the like. It may make your current home look like a tornado but worth it. Don't forget to mark the boxes and where they are going.

I would suggest getting bigger clear plastic lidded boxes that you can put on top of each other. Then put the empty jars in those for storage. You won't need a lot of shelves for empties and it is easier to get the empties upstairs for canning..
Using the holes on the legs to run a bungie cord as a lip to hold thing on the shelf for things like earthquakes. the holes are great for securing the shelves to the wall so no tipping. Sealing the shelves with a varnish or varathane will make them easier to clean and reduce staining and prevent the shelves from turning to mush when spillage occurs
