Another good score, and simple fix! I had an older self-propelled Honda that my dad gave me. He had actually changed the crankshaft because he bent it somehow. It ran and mowed great. Only complaint was that the self propelled function was a bit fast for my taste. It had a metal plate that one would install for mulch mode.

Those are good mowers and that’s a great deal. That piece of plastic that you’re referencing is called a “mulch plug”. They usually are pretty cheap to buy

The surging is normally caused by the pilot jet being clogged . Small cap or Philips screw right under or near the idle setting screw. If it’s the black cap it has to be cleared at the end of the plug with a 24 ga wire or tool.

i like to blow off my mowers with the leaf blower after hosing them down. Also is that tree out front dead or dying? if so may i recommend pulling it and planting a nice Bald Cypress perhaps? i have one out front that is about 4 foot tall. i grew it from seed a few years back. it's a cool tree and one of my favorites that i have planted since my mrs. and i bought our first house 2 years ago.
