Reminded me of my original mower bought it used for $300 and ran it for 29 years then sold it fully serviced for $250 and just fully serviced it for the customer after 3 years of use. The only issues were changing recoil ropes 2 times and replacing wheel rubbers. Good job Brucey boy.
The old Honda’s are great mowers, well designed. I tend to use a wood screw to pull seals out. Another good video Bruce, I bet you were humming “I’m forever blowing bubbles” whilst you were checking out the seal 😁
Nice of Claus to send professional tool. I use a business card. I actually use the appointment card from the Cardiologist who told me I shouldn’t work on lawnmowers anymore. I still work on engines and replaced my Cardiologist.
I'm just doing a rato engine on a ctc certified. Torque was 50 NM which is 38 ft lbs. I did rope in the cylinder Just looked up gcv160. Same 52 NM 38 ft lbs. I recall years back thnking 50 ft lbs for an old 5hp tecumseh snowblower engine. Snapped odd the end of the crankshaft.
Great video. Is there a link or video on how to remove the transmission assembly, I have already removed everything and now stuck trying to slide off the shaft. I did remove one pin inside the yolk area and also the round squeeze clamp and it won't slide off, engine side. Thank you
This summer I got a free Toro along side of the road said parts free. When I got around to it the top of crankshaft broke off the owner must have been trying to start it with a impact? So I drilled and tapped it to 3/8 nf. Then after carburetor cleaned it ran
Mabe a little Copper Coat by K&W, I used it for 45 years on seals freeze plugs and engine gaskets of all kinds it dosen't harden up like some of the other liquid sealers😀
Last spring I replaced a couple bearings in the clutch and shaft cleaned everything up. Ran fine all summer late summer I noticed oil on the deck and under all around the clutch area. I bought a main seal and pan gasket. My concern is due to the age does it need rings and valve seals thinking it might have enough blow by to be pushing the oil out past the seals. It does smoke when you first start it and it’s cool out but settles down once warmed up mower is a Mid 80s HR214. Do these things ever wear out rod bearings? My dad bought this mower brand new so I want to fix it properly. It’s still works great key start and all!
Hi Bruce. I have the same seal leaking. Going to replace this weekend. How deep did you drive the new seal in? Was the top of the seal flush with the top of the case or recessed a bit? Thanks so much, great video!
Well eveytable is different. It was 8 years ago I did mine. So start undernieth the moving platform. Make sure you don't drill into anythin important. My carriage bolts are about an inch from the edge. You can even start 1 hole ahead of time. Place the plywood on top. Cycle it trtough a few ups and downs so the pylwood doesn't hit any handeles etc. Then drill your one hole from the metal to the wood. After you have one hole drilled drill the other 3 so they will line up prefectly.
Great video Bruce. I need to do the same repair. Can you tell me what sealant product you used on the new seal, and what surfaces you applied it to? I want to do it right the first time hopefully not being a pro. Thanks in advance. Also looked like original seal was in too far. Is it supposed to go in flush with the top metal rim?
Actually just took my hr215 apart and yes the seal was flush with top rim. Taking it out, as it got pulled apart, it fell down where the bearing is, and then it was loose and would spin. So appears when I get my new one in, seated position will be flush with top metal rim. Hopefully will be tight and leak free.
How's she goin'? That's is a pretty fancy Honda mower. Good catch on the top seal leaking. Strange that the Honda replacement seal was loose. I bet the thread locker will solve that problem though. Take care!!!
I wonder how Honda prescribes getting that flywheel off... Were there holes for a puller? Or, perhaps, they have a knock off tool like tecumseh. That is pretty strange about that upper seal, seems like both the new and old one were a little loose in the crankcase.
I have turned them down a few times. I get a lot of offers from other companies as well. Selling stuff for other companies is (to this point) not what I do.

Thanks Wayne. I know you watch closely.
Yep gotta keep an eye on you old guys@@BrucesShop
Picked up the same mower HRA 215 "Free" rusty deck! been working on it! Cleaned the carb etc she still runs Heavy duty!
That is a good find for you.

Well Al I was going to use a wod screw as well, but as it was loose I though i would just pop it out with a pick which was the wrong idea.
@@BrucesShop your hooman after all 😄😄

LOL I ust had an ultrasound of my ticker this week.
What a great old Honda! That one is worth making whatever repairs it might ever need.
You are right. It has been so well maintained. Even the blade.
Good old honda mower with the gxv 160 engine i just got two honda 194 for free from the 80,s there great mowers great job Bruce and great video👍
Right on. They are a great mower.
I'm just doing a rato engine on a ctc certified. Torque was 50 NM which is 38 ft lbs. I did rope in the cylinder

That is too bad on the crankshaft.
Great vid Bruce! FWIW I tend to use a pvc pipe fitting of same diameter for seal punch but anything works as long as it’s done right.
Great tip! This one I could have used my fingers.
8:17 I use some penetrating oil on the shaft to help remove it. But your secret weapon of atf and other stuff will work also
Right We use what works.
Great video. Is there a link or video on how to remove the transmission assembly, I have already removed everything and now stuck trying to slide off the shaft. I did remove one pin inside the yolk area and also the round squeeze clamp and it won't slide off, engine side. Thank you
Sorry I have not done one this old.
Nice Save Bruce! an oldie but goodie!
Thanks for watching Ken I know you are a busy guy.
Never too busy for one of the ORIGINAL Small Engine TH-camrs!!
You can block the blade with 2 by 4 when thight the flywheel. If i may say so.
Stupid of me, i'm sorry. It's a belt driven right?
The blade is on a clutch so it spins freely when not engaged.
This summer I got a free Toro along side of the road said parts free. When I got around to it the top of crankshaft broke off the owner must have been trying to start it with a impact? So I drilled and tapped it to 3/8 nf. Then after carburetor cleaned it ran
Perfect.
Love those aluminum decks on old machines
Me too.
Good job on that one Bruce!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Mabe a little Copper Coat by K&W, I used it for 45 years on seals freeze plugs and engine gaskets of all kinds it dosen't harden up like some of the other liquid sealers😀
Is that like the old GM gasket maker glue (it is almost a red colour)? I have some of that and it is OOOLLLDDDD
LOL

I would leave it I have seen so many that smoke for a bit when cold. If it smokes all the time i would do something.
Hi Bruce. I have the same seal leaking. Going to replace this weekend. How deep did you drive the new seal in? Was the top of the seal flush with the top of the case or recessed a bit? Thanks so much, great video!
The seal was recessed a bit. It went in easy so much so I used a bit of black sealant on th top of the seal.
Bruce the lift table you have plywood on top. what was the size of it? also how far did you measure to put your carriage bolts in.
Well eveytable is different. It was 8 years ago I did mine. So start undernieth the moving platform. Make sure you don't drill into anythin important. Right. That is why I used the Gasket seaker on the seal. It just felt loose. I did leave it overnight.
Such amazing mowers. So sad to see that Honda is pulling its line in North America.
Thanks Bruce from NB!
I know. It still doesn't seem possible.
Good mowers, but *certainly* no better than an older Toro or Troybilt.
Good work Bruce . Such a great machine .
They sure are. Thanks Pete
I see you are approaching snowblower season
Yes. The 2 in the background are the little single stage snow throwers.
How's she goin'? That's is a pretty fancy Honda mower. Good catch on the top seal leaking. Strange that the Honda replacement seal was loose. I bet the thread locker will solve that problem though. Take care!!!
Yes it did. It bothered me enough that i phoned my buddy Brian and confirmed it wasn't leaking.
Bruce, I'm wondering if maybe a 3/4" or 1", 6" pipe nipple would fit over the crank to tap that seal in a little evener and easier? Good video.
Yes but this one I could just push on with my fingers. That bothered me.
I wonder how Honda prescribes getting that flywheel off... Were there holes for a puller? Or, perhaps, they have a knock off tool like tecumseh. That is pretty strange about that upper seal, seems like both the new and old one were a little loose in the crankcase.
You are right. The gasket seal and Loketite helped.
Great video. I will watch part 2 next.
Hope you enjoy it!
Great fix there
Thanks
That's an oldie. Good fix!
Thanks Bill
@BrucePender I meant the mower, not you. LOL
Got it. Had to come back. LOL@@GuysPlayingWithTools

Very good video thank you for the video
So nice of you
A chorme plated handle classic Honda mower probably from the 1980s
Wouldn't it be nice to get that machine brand new!!!!!
@@BrucesShop you got that right Mr Pende And at a lower price
What rpm do set the motor on ?
This is usually a question with Honda. I think i set it for 3200 RPM as it is a bit older.
Wouldn’t a puller be safer on the bearings than smacking the crank with a hammer?
What ever works for you.. I try to start light and move to the heavy as in this video.
I have had it and I am switching to an electric mower. I bet Sunjoe will pay you to advertise electric mowers.

So old it is made of an odd material known as “metal”
Wow. Using metal to make a mower. I may catch on!!!!!
