Why Did PCGS Do This Or Am I Confused? PCGS labeled my 1859 BG-702 as a BG-703 which is unique, so as rare as it gets, and worth thousands of dollars. Alice in Wonderland had the cutest little phrase, "Curioser and curioser". Same thing here. Daniel, attention to detail and good research. I believe that you executed a masterful uppercut to the jaw of PCGS, and rightfully deserved. Territorial fractional gold is tricky., tricky, tricky! Congratulations. Job well done.
I saw one of your videos You showed a bunch of difrent slabs by defrent companies and you said is this what we want and you like having PCGS NGC and ANACS .. I Think they are a scam And we need the others like NTC and others, All it is is an pinion also pcgs stole my cion and slabed a low grade one .
Imagine working there and finding a piece so rare that it has a population of 1. Wouldn't you be like "hey so and so, check this out! We got a submission thats only the 2nd one in existence!". You would think that would be the talk of the shop that day. Yet anyone doing a cursory comparison would notice the difference 🤷♂️.
I just found your videos ... I'm 67 yrs old, my dad was buying huge amounts of US Coins in the 1980s & 90s & 2000s, after his 10 years of buying a thousand collectible plates in the 1970s, he was a big fan of the Bradford Exchange type companies. I spent 2 years going thru his coins, all of which were basically clad sets & proof sets, & a lot of Silver Eagles, TONS of rolls of pennies , nickels etc. Many of the boxes were not even opened, so I found a lot of invoices of what he paid. I have all the books, I became quite addicted to things like Morgans, of which my dad never bought, & found as I sold off his stuff, that I was lucky to get back half of what I knew he paid. If my dad had never bought a coin, as he hoped to leave to his children, and just put that money into a wooden chest, his children would have gotten at least 75,000 more in inheritance. But it was his money, he had every right to dream, but I wanted to mention, I am from the Springfield Ma area, & there is a Coin Exchange at 524 Allen Street in Springfield Ma, owned by a man named "Euclid Desrochers III" who treated me so fairly & so honestly. He is one of those GOOD GUYS out there that you talk about. Maybe you've met at Shows. Thanks for your info
Or perhaps just spent all that on silver coins like pre64 dimes quarters and half dollars at the time was going for 4x face. Now they are worth much more. 20x at least
I had the same thing happen to a regular 1877 Seated Half dollar I sent in last year around this time. They designated it Open Bud WB-101 which is a rare off shoot. With that designation (which I didn't list in my paperwork, nor pay for), and at a VF30, it listed as a top pop, worth 4 to 5 digits. This made no sense to me, so I checked it out to figure what "Open Bud" meant and figured that it was the "closed" version. I took pics and sent it to them and they immediately agreed ( Nice response time!) and offered to pay for the shipping and other expenses to reslab it. If something is being checked by more than one person originally, how does this happen as often as I hear about it happening. AND for something that rare??? I know they get a LOT of submissions, but...come on! Still go to them, but my confidence in them has wavered a bit in the last year.
Dan's a straight shooter. I'm always willing to pay a little more to get an honest sale of what I'm getting from him he is quite conservative with calling his grade estimates or problem free designation on raw coins wich is how I usually buy mine.
There's a great opportunity here to start a new collection that contains nothing but grading company errors. I saw another video where PCGS had a quarter slabbed as a nickel.
You would think that for as much as they charge to have your coins graded by "experts", they wouldn't get so many wrong. This is a brilliant example, because for once, they screwed up in favor of the submitter. You have enough experience and attention to detail that you finally said , "hey, wait a minute...", but if you hadn't, I wonder how many hands this would've gone through before someone else caught it. Would it have sold on Heritage or GC? Gone in some flagship registry set? They get the little stuff wrong all the time, like strike designation or "questionable color"-usually to the detriment of the submitter, and there's no recourse except to either resubmit or live with the results. I don't believe they are living up to the standard of excellence they used to. This got by 3 coin experts?!
That's a whopper of a mistake for PCGS to make. I have to wonder why they didn't double check that. It could have started with something as simple as a typing error but there is a reason for more than one person to look at the high end coins to verify them. Thank you for highlighting this!
Would think a unique and high end coin would afford more then one set of eyes. If you have videos or pictures of the coins sent in check to make sure that is the coin you submitted. I'm quite paranoid to send mine in thinking they might pull an old switcheroo. Maybe I'm just paranoid cause that would be tempting for me if I worked their.
Wow I'm surprised pcgs made a mistake like that usually it goes the other way around lol but we're only human we make mistakes. I'm still in awe you got these, you deserve it. 👍👍
You might have to resubmit your 1859 as a die error because the 9 is missing the lower half. Even though it's been circulated condition, it still looks like there was something wrong with die for the date
Amazing work here! Beyond Humbling, this helps discredit the conspiracies about grading companies gifting grades, just human subjectivity and error from us being human, it just happens ❤🤷🙏
I suppose the "buy back at market value" guarantee doesn't apply because you're the one who sent it in? If I were on the board of that company I'd give you free lifetime membership because anyone else would have kept their mouth shut, sold it to a friend at a marginal sum and told them to take advantage of the guarantee. Which would cost them more. I applaud your honesty, integrity, and devotion to education. We're all better off because of what you do for this hobby.
It’s like I always said you can be so good at your job that you overlook something. You get careless, not on purpose but things happen. A couple of years ago I told a nurse she made a mistake. She about had a fit. Like you said things happen nobody’s perfect ✌️.
Daniel, this might be something that machine vision (wrongly called artificial intelligence) could do. The grading services could catch errors in attribution before returning items to the customer.
I can't understand how a grading company can let a California fractional gold so unique be misidentified. My understanding is the grading fee is higher commensurate with value. I am amazed that an error such as this can happen. Casts a shadow IMO of the value and importance we place on grading.
This is what makes me so nervous about submitting- local shop near me had an obvious issue from a recent NGC submission so unfortunately it’s happening with both
Wow! That's a shame that happened. It's really great it got caught and you put this video out because you had the potential of really disappointing a customer who would be telling others about a bad experience if it got caught after a deal was completed. I'm really surprised that for a certain level coin like that multiple human eyes weren't checking it out before and after it was put in a holder. Seems like the kind of thing they would be letting all the graders look at in person to get the experience before it was shipped back to you.
If the coins are graded by a "team" effort this should never happen. But honestly if they fix it and pay for shipping and re-submission id be happy with that. That is the least they can do imo.
Intereting. Well hopefully the turn around time for the correction will be quick. Seems like rather a big mistake, being that it's totally misattributed(?)
As always I enjoy your videos. It is amazing how many great looking old coins still exsist. It seems to be that melt value is the driving force now. I see more people having to sell their coins for various reasons. Coins from the 1800-1900's sell for melt. The numanistic value is not important anymore unless you get a graded coin of ms63 or better. That old feeling of holding an old silver dollar etc and wondering about the history of it and who might have held it and to dream Its worth because of its age has faded because there are so many out there. Who cares to look at a brand new 2024 quarter and wonder anything about it. It would never be worth anything other than .25 in my lifetime .
I have a tenth of an Oz. 1853 Gold piece is an octacon shape the reverse has California on top a star in the middle and below the star is the word gold, can't find it in my mega red book, possibly a token? Has no monetary value minted on it,I'm sure they may be other books out there, thanks
May I suggest creating a hard and thorough checklist before submitting coins in the future. Is it genuine, is it cleaned (examine with loop or microscope), check denomination, year, mint mark, weight, diameter, variety, check and compare against all varieties and finally estimated grade and value. Feel free to add or edit the list.
I'm not a fan of PCGS way over rated! With todays A-I maybe set a standard instead of taking the word of different grade companies. You have a Great eye Daniel I trust your grades Thanks for showing us!
Now can’t you make them buy that coin from you since they made the mistake if so I know that is not what your trying to do but you done your part they just messed up

This video doesn't confirm your opinion, NTC is not a good grading company.
That's why I trust you Daniel, over any grading company
That says everyone can make mistakes. Even grading companies. Another good video Daniel. Look forward to the next one.
Wow, that is really bizarre especially since you sent it in under the correct listing, but then they put it under a different listing.

I’m glad you are honest and not taking advantage of the wrong label by PCGS like some might likely do. Have a great day
Dan's a straight shooter. I'm always willing to pay a little more to get an honest sale of what I'm getting from him he is quite conservative with calling his grade estimates or problem free designation on raw coins wich is how I usually buy mine.
That's a wild one! The wrong person would've went crazy with that one, haha.
There's a great opportunity here to start a new collection that contains nothing but grading company errors. I saw another video where PCGS had a quarter slabbed as a nickel.

When Daniel's latest post starts with "Am I Confused"??? That's "Ruh OH" gotta watch! Thanks Daniel.

Not being from the mint that doesn’t matter.
@CoinHELPu
Ok.
I'm glad you know your coins, well done
I talked to a guy who said he submitted a coin to a grading company. When he got it back, it was a different coin.
Wow, way to go Daniel. Congratulations
California gold is a beautiful piece.
What a bummer, still a great coin, and I would be proud to own one.
Amazing work here! Beyond Humbling, this helps discredit the conspiracies about grading companies gifting grades, just human subjectivity and error from us being human, it just happens ❤🤷🙏
Daniel, you are always interesting and enjoyable to listen to and learn from.
Blessings in the new year,
Louis
As usual great job sir.
Thanks for sharing

You said it, ThewinstonDouble -- Daniel is honest and they should give him some form of recompense for that.

Daniel, I think you've got one of a kind my Man!
Sometimes mistakes can be made good thing you caught it i hope PCGS will acknowledge there mistake and fix that quickly

It’s still a rare coin. I’d love to have it in my small collection

I think Kendra's banding is much better, but the color and geode pocket in yours seals the win today for you. 😊😊

Thankyou 👍
It’s value now is in the fact that it is a pcgs era
Thanks for the video. I have an 1869 half dollar with 13 stars.

Love the California gold.
Great video
Wow, hope it works out for you
Does PCGS know what they are doing??? I've received a few mistakes from them as well...
Excellent video Maybe they were just too busy that day .... not excellent
What a lovely problem to have!
Either way you still got a cool coin!
That coin is so horrible, I love it. Were they drunk when they engraved those dies lol.
The die was pitted.
@@CoinHELPu But that improved the coin.
Wow mistakes can and do happen
I think the great great grandfather founder of Temu made this coin in his house while working in California....😂😂😂
This is what our Lord likes is honesty and integrity and just weights. Bless him Oh LORD our God in Christ I pray 🙏✝️👍💖✌️ SHALOM
May I suggest creating a hard and thorough checklist before submitting coins in the future. I submitted it correctly. My method is sound, PCGS messed it up.
Well done Daniel
I really hope the refund you and regrade it for free since it's their problem and not yours
Send it to NGC

I'm not a fan of PCGS way over rated! With todays A-I maybe set a standard instead of taking the word of different grade companies. You have a Great eye Daniel I trust your grades Thanks for showing us!
