My wife lived in Syracuse for ten years. She says people who live there are used to lots of snow. No one panics when an inch of snow is on the ground. She says people put their snow tires on after Columbus Day & don’t take them off until Memorial Day. They have lots of firewood incase people lose power. They all help each other. Unlike in downstate Connecticut where we live.

    • @lisacarver1128
      @lisacarver1128 23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

Well you guys have the proper equipment to handle this. When any amount of snow falls in the South we have the thawing and refreezing cycles producing black ice. I don't know of any normal tire that handles ice.

    • @johnclyne6350
      @johnclyne6350 22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

@ Studded snow tires work on ice. How do I know? I have them on all 4 corners on my GMC (4 wheel drive) Suburban. They are great in the snow. I get slightly less MPG than on summer tires. I usually average 11 MPG with studded snows. 14 MPG on summer tires. If I engage the 4 wheel drive my MPG drops to 9 MPG. I don’t drive a lot so the reduced fuel economy doesn’t usually affect me. I’m rare,y in 4 wheel drive. Only in when it’s snowing out.

We have many 18 inches of snow in Edmonton Alberta but man minus 25 30 degrees celsius. You will die out there if not protected. Its the cold that kills. And it doesn't take long. If you're in your and it's out of gas or broken. And you are not prepared. You will die. And its not pleasant if you are found and lots frostbite. The pain is mindblowing. It just isn't worth risking being out unless it is dire.

Many years ago I lived in the north of Russia, the city of Khanty-Mansiysk. There are very snowy winters and temperatures often drop to minus 45 Celsius (-49°F) and below. But the worst thing is if all this is accompanied by the wind, then you just might die in half an hour! It happened that people, stuck on the highways between cities, burned their cars to keep warm, but this did not save them...

I was born and raised in Erie Pa. Graduated high school, went to college out of state, never moved back. Erie winters are brutal. The countless days and weeks of overcasts makes you want to just end life. 98% of my graduating class in the 90's left and never returned. My entire family moved out, not one person left in PA, they all got out. My High school no longer holds class reunions as no one is left and no one came back to the reunions. Don't have any sympathy for those in Erie, everyone there is free to leave if they want.

    We live on Lake Michigan.
We see a lot of snows like this.
But this time, we weren't in the band of heavy snow.
I know our luck will run out sometime this winter.
I remember storms as I was growing up, that left drifts so high, you couldn't see around them at intersections.
Entering traffic was a gamble, as you couldn't see if a car was coming.
One year, drifts were high enough, you could climb to the top, raise your hand and touch the phone lines.
It's been a bit since we've had it that bad, I think we are about due for a storm like that.

i think i figured i spent seven hours snowblowing, yesterday, and three, today, before it (temporarily) stopped.
the early lake effect storms are more difficult, because the ground is warm, so the bottom inch is all water. the lake is warm, so it snows a lot more, and the snow is warm, so it's thick and heavy, and it doesn't blow well.

    WINTER'S SNOW & LOVE -2024**
Over the heads of all I meet
    Falls winter's life giving snow.
Upon the rooftops and the streets
Filling the sky and earth below.
    Dancing, swirling, skimming along,
    Like the snows of yesteryears.
There's lots of ice on the windows
As my lashes freeze over with tears.
It's so cold; it's too cold to snow
Yet the snow continues to fall.
The land is covered blanket white
As the winter winds wail their call.
    There's a red-hot fire awaiting me
That will thaw out my every part.
It's not the glow of a fireplace
But the love that dwells in my heart.

If you love the 4 seasons, The Erie area is a great place to live. I’ve been outside for the past 2 days shoveling, snow blowing and helping neighbors. The kids are bundled up and are having fun making igloos and sledding, my grandkids couldn’t wait to go out and have fun. People that live in areas that are impacted by lake effect snow storms are pretty used to this and are typically prepared for a few days of inconvenience. I took my Labrador for a walk and ran into a neighbor that grew up with my girls. He now lives in the Tampa and told me that he lost everything with the hurricane back in October. In a few days, we will be dug out and back to business.

it's not "want". this is just a (fairly) typical winter storm. yes, this one was a lot, but we get 3-4 major lake effect snowstorms per season. yesterday into today was probably 36-40" (just guessing, because lake effect is very localized, so some places will get 15" and some will get 40"), and even fifteen miles south of town, the snow didn't even completely cover the grass.
it's inconvenient, and it can be difficult in spots, but remember, the vloggers are going where they hear the action is on the radio, and some of the spots they have (repeatedly) filmed are notoriously bad, because they get a lot of traffic, or because they're on a steep hill, or at a busy intersection, etc.

Being high centered is what causes “being stuck“.
If you avoid driving in snow deeper than your lowest undercarriage, you won’t get stuck.
Good tread does help. Chains will help a lot more. Of course once your car is lifted from the center you are stuck.
Four-wheel-drive will help if you have good tires and if you have chains even more. But once you’re high centered, you will have to dig out underneath before you can move again. And if it’s still too deep for your undercarriage in front or back, you’ll just get stuck again.
    More easily said than understood.
But driving and playing in snow is something I miss so much.
Hope everyone’s having fun I would be.
